@purpleclaws202 obviously. But why should 80% of a class suffer for the 10% who break the rules? They'll fail and either learn their lesson or go on to be Crack heads or prostitutes 🤷‍♀️ it's not the teachers job to decide who gets to poop and who doesn't.

Story 1: I went to a high school that wasn't super privileged and there were always feminine hygiene products available. Lots of teachers just had them in their desks, but if they didn't, all the different offices around the school stocked them. Obviously my experience is not everyone's experience, but I don't think it's completely unreasonable for that mom to assume the school would have some.

No child should be denied access to the bathroom, ever, for any reason, period. It may be policy, and not the teacher, but it's a bad policy. Bathroom access is health, and it should be treated as such.

usually the policy is 10 min before or after no kid can go. because kids skip out on class. and one kid at a time because they like to sneak off to smoke in the bathroom. or go meet up with their SO. and if we know there's a lockdown drill coming or something, I say no because i just want to deal with that first and need to know where my kids are. we had a real fire and my student told me he was in the bathroom. when i told officials where he was, he wasn't there. he was never there. he snuck into the gym to play basketball. It's all the kids abuing the batthroom passes that have made the system the way it is. we are responsible for protecting and knowing where you are at all times. when i didn't know where my kid was during a real fire, i had a complete panic attack.

It is truly insane that students in America can’t go to the bathroom when ever they want. Where I come from you could just walk out of the classroom without telling the teacher and nothing would happen as long as you weren’t gone for too long. Telling a child they can’t go to the bathroom when they need to us insane. Like if they have to hold themselves for too long to often that can legit damage their bladder.

There is another issue in the US with just walking out. It is deemed that teachers are legally responsible for the kids during their class periods so kids aren't allowed to leave the room without a teacher knowing just in case there is a fire drill or code red or something, the teacher is legally supposed to be able to account for you at all times

I know, I'm from New Zealand and I found this utterly horrifying and shocking to hear, I've seen a lot of things from television when it comes to how things work in America and I know it's not always accurate, but the fact that you can't go to the bathroom whenever you feel like it is utterly ridiculous, no matter what age you are. For my school in New Zealand in high school you could go any time during the period, there were select times because they didn't want everyone leaving at once but for the most part if you needed to go to the bathroom you would just get up and go sometimes you would just like mention to the teacher because going to the bathroom only takes like four minutes and depending on how far away your classroom is I can understand like missing class time but if you need to go you should just go and it's so surprising to me in America they have all of these bathroom passes, like in all the movies you have to have a bathroom pass and have to wait till the end of class and the fact that there's no nurses and no hygiene products like we had a nurse yes she wasn't always stocked with lots of hygiene products but she still had some And honestly it's just really sad I cannot believe that America has all these kids with like five different electronic products in their schools are underfunded and they don't have hygiene products or nurses and can't go to the bathroom when they need to, I can understand in terms of not wanting someone to leave class early or skip school or whatever but most of the time kids just want to go to the bathroom and it is truly sad that they can'tI actually didn't think this was a real thing and I'm sad to hear it is😊

1st story seriously I will never believe it is acceptable to tell anyone they cannot use the restroom. Using the bathroom is the same as eating or drinking water. I'm an elementary school 2nd shift custodian and sometimes I have to cover my supervisor during the day shift. At lunch time, there are kids asking me if they can use the bathroom and I tell them yes everytime. I used to be a Para and some kids would ask me if they can use the bathroom and again I say yes or tell them, if they have a bathroom in the classroom, that they can go when the other person gets out. I never say no to kids who need to use the bathroom. I get the whole safety and people who use the bathroom to their advantage, but come on at least give them the benefit of the doubt.
I remember when I was in school, some grades told us we can only go in the bathroom like 3 or 5 times (I forgot how many) during class in a marking period which is ridiculous if you ask me. So yea I'm not afraid to just tell kids to go

Story 4: I agree that OP should have told the others about where some of his food was coming from and/or gotten a small frig to use for those specific items and have that be in his room.
That being said, the rest is absolutely the fault of the roommate(s)! It's one thing of someone accidently grabs your food once in a while, like once a month. But, when OP has called out the issue to the roommates multiple times because it's happening every 2-3 days, and they just brush it off like it's no big deal...then I think it's safe to assume that ALL of them are likely taking OP's food intentionally! Especially now, food is really expensive and they don't have a right to essentially take money from you in the form of food. So it would seem that everyone should label their food going forward OR put frigs in each room to keep and clearly define their food from the others.

1st story I've personally delt with. My son came home crying because he wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom and ended up pooping on himself. The way I approached it was I messaged her and asked what happened and why he was not able to go. She told me because the kids were playing in the bathroom she has them go into groups so she can better monitor them. I was understanding and had him express to her that if he really needs to go to let her know and not stay quiet. Hasn't happened again.

Story 1 you didnt judge by the information given like you normally would. The teacher was just rude and dismissive and didnt offer anyexplanation. My schools and every school I knew required a nurse and sold feminine products from bathroom dispensers for a quarter eqch. They didnt have applicators but they worked. The teacher was a jerk twice, it just sounds like this teacher doesnt have compassion. Maybe dont yell, but those things seem like basic requirements I have never not seen in a school. If i found out that was the case I would take my child out of that school for homeschooling. There were no bathroom rules mentioned so we shouldnt assume tgere is one. The teacher just doesnt care. Crab apple mom, fully bad apple teacher.

There are very few foods that I would want to dumpster dive. Eggs, meats, and milk are on the list of NOPE. They were thrown out for a reason. And I agree that the food from the dumpster should've been placed in a marked bag. Like: Op's dumpster eggs DO NOT TOUCH! And maybe tell the others, "Hey, these are mine, please don't touch." And after all that the roommate consumed the eggs then that is their roommate's fault. I'm going crab.

For story one, I’ll correct Rebecca. She said in what world would they have a nurse on staff and feminine hygiene products. My school had both. I had 2 school nurses. A nurses office is very common and until this story I didn’t know some schools don’t have that. All the schools in my area have one. So if this person is from Upstate New York or something like me and they moved I wouldn’t check to see if a nurse was there either. I would also assume the school had one bc I’ve never seen differently. It’s not the teachers fault but it’s fair that the mom assumed there was a school nurse

Every school I have worked for has had feminine products in the nurse's office. However, it isn't necessarily common for a school to have a full time nurse. My current school shares a nurse with many other schools. I think we get her for a half day once per week. When I was at a different school in the same district, there was a nurse certain mornings or afternoons, but secretaries end up being stand-in nurses the majority of the time.

Story 1. If the teacher did that because of a policy, she should’ve said so. As it stands, she seems like one of those teachers who loves exerting her limited power by treating the students like less than human. Even so, OP didn’t know anything about her reasoning beforehand. OP literally said she “barged into her teacher’s classroom.” That shows that she didn’t approach the situation calmly and maturely, ready to listen to the teacher. Plus, she confronted the teacher alone in a classroom; that teacher doesn’t know her or what she might do when angry. It could’ve been very scary for the teacher! If OP said she was furious but wanted to hear out the teacher then walked away still mad, that’d be one thing. But how OP approached it makes her a *bad apple.*
As for school policies about tampons, that shouldn’t prohibit them from providing pads!
I completely agree with your assessments of the other stories.

Story 1: How is it that schools have money for toilet paper but not for a limited supply of emergency hygiene supplies? Feminine hygiene is just hygiene. I get that schools are underfunded, but that is the bare minimum. We need to stop treating these needs as unimportant. It’s not okay that the teacher was dismissive, telling mom to “get over it.” No reasonable person would expect a 12 year old to explain in front of 30 other 12 year olds that they are on their period. Under these facts, the teacher was a bad Apple. Period.

My middle school had a policy that you can't get up from a test for any reason otherwise you were done with the test.
That was until I handed in a half finished science test that was covered in blood. Also my shirt, pants, face, hair, desk, and seat were also covered in blood. My nose had started bleeding and I ended up needing to get it cauterized to get it to stop. I was 12 & extremely shy and a rule follower so I had sat there with a bleeding nose for about 30 minutes trying to take my test (the teacher was at their desk the entire time grading the tests from the prior class).
My mom was not kind to the teacher (for not noticing me bleeding for 30 minutes not the policy) or principal and threatened to sue the school. The policy was changed so that you couldn't go to the bathroom but could ask to go to the office/nurse

I have stomach related chronic illnesses and it was documented in the nurse and in my IEP but yet when I asked to go
to the bathroom there was always that teacher that didn't let me go. I think it's insane that teachers deny bathroom
access especially to those with medical conditions. And women who do have their periods, my cycle is so irregular sometimes you don't know when it's coming and you have to leave. Many people including myself other symptoms along with bleeding to where they need to go to the bathroom asap. In the real world, you never ask to go to the bathroom. In college you just got up and at work in my office you do the same. When I worked retail, I'd tell someone I'm leaving the sales floor for a few minutes but you don't ask to go. Going to the bathroom isn't a privilege... everyone should be able to without refused entry, health issues or not but especially those with issues. The teacher saying to "get over it" and "I wouldn't have known" I mean you shouldn't have to explain why you need to use the bathroom... and the teacher saying to the OP to "get over it" is rude. I may not have yelled at the teacher, I would have came in more assertive and maturely, but I can see where her anger is coming from as well so I'm going to say crab apple!!

As a New Zealander, hearing that first story was so surprising to me we had both counsellors and nurses at my high school, I don't know about other high schools in New Zealand but the one I went to was pretty chill about a lot of stuff and don't get me wrong we still had certain times in each period that we could leave to go to the bathroom you couldn't just get up and go any time, but for example dissecting animals in science class kids would faint or need to get fresh air so they would leave the classroom other people would get sick or have something happen and need to see the nurse or go to the bathroom, there were many times I would leave class just to quickly go to the bathroom and come back. The only thing I know about American schools is from television and it seems like they still have counsellors or nurses least in the movies and TV shows I've seen I know movies and TV aren't always a true accurate depiction of real life, but I've heard a lot of people say especially when it comes to prom, Halloween etc a lot of what you see on TV is very similar to What it's really like in the states. So I find it truly sad that you are not allowed to leave during class time just to go to the bathroom, something that all kids need to do, not everyone is on a bathroom schedule, especially when it comes to younger kids, for high school I can understand wanting to have a stricter schedule to make sure that people aren't just ditching class or Leaving early etc and really need to go to the bathroom, it does also depend how far away the bathrooms are from the classroom, however going to the bathroom usually takes between 2 to 4 minutes which isn't a lot of class time so it doesn't really seem like a big deal, yes a lot of kids going at once could be an issue, so as long as you regulate it And have certain times within each period that students are allowed to go to the bathroom, I don't think it should be a problem, again my school was pretty chill about going to the bathroom, if someone fainted was sick or just really needed to use the bathroom because they had their period or ..
so I'm really surprised that kids could only go before class or at lunchtime, sometimes you might eat something bad or something might go wrong in class which means you need to see the nurse or go to the bathroom so you should be able to, but again I know my school is probably very different from schools in America and I can only speak for my schooling experience I don't know what it was like for other students going to school in New Zealand maybe it was just my high school, but this was a real surprise to me and I feel so sorry for anyone who wasn't able to go to the bathroom when they needed to. Don't get me wrong I understand missing out on school and not wanting to miss something important because you were in the bathroom, but when you need to go you should go, at least in my opinion!

Doing a re-listen after 7 months and I think I was wrong at first. I really wasn't thinking at the time just blazing through it all. Now that I have a calmer mind and can actually think for once in a really long time, I think I agree with Bad apple. To start I think the mom should have prepared the daughter more. Like having some products in her bag for these emergencies. (extra change of clothing, pads and tampons and whatever else the daughter needs.) And explain to the daughter that it is possible to have it during school and what she should do if it does happen. I agree that the policies of students having limited bathroom breaks are stupid but I do understand that they are there to prevent kids from ditching class. It does suck that some punish all. And in a perfect world this wouldn't happen, but we don't live in a perfect world. The mom was too rough towards the teacher and should've asked what happened from her pov.

The cost of living was much lower, so schools had better funding. People were not so worried about getting sued for giving basic care. That said, I always made sure that my daughter had a pencil case full of supplies and Advil just in case. A few years ago (I think 2021-2022) we had a local district that locked the bathrooms at the High school between classes because too many kids were congregated in them, but they also discouraged kids from using them during class. So the only time the kids really had to use the bathrooms were before school, lunch and after school.

Parents could've had the kid together, split up, and got back together. And the middle daughter could have happened during on the split.

It's so dangerous not to know. So many conditions and diseases are genetic, and early detection/monitoring can save lives.
If I didn't know that mom was my biological mom, I wouldn't have known that I was at high risk for heart failure, and kidney cancer. We've already detected some questionable ECG findings, so we're watching my heart even closer (mom died of heart/kidney failure at 48).

At my school, the rules are quite strict about using the bathrooms. There are times where I am not able to use it from mid morning to four. Along with that, passing periods are minimum as it is. They don’t want students going and doing things they aren’t supposed to during the breaks, so they make it as sort a period as reasonable. I go to a decently big high school number wise, so our hallways are quite crowded during passing period. This means that it’s hard to be to class on time in the first place, and that’s without trying to take care of one’s body like using the restroom or getting water to drink. It’s so important that students always have access to the ability to take care of their health

Story 2: He's the HERO APPLE. Keeping your family secrets is NOT WORTH missing out on important genetic information that can let you know about diseases and shit that you're predisposed to.
Also, no kid likes lies from their parents. Grandma saved that child from isolation and possibly feeling suicidal, she was someone was really there for her & not just regarding her as a responsibility.

Story 1: Crab Apple at the VERY LEAST. I get mom being protective, but I see why the teacher is following the rules.
Story 2: good apple. I understand wanting to protect your child, but what if mom had some health issues? I was going to go bad apple until I discovered the reason. In a world where MiLs get DNA tests because they think the mom cheated, getting a DNA test on the request of the grand daughter is so wholesome.
Story 3: good apple because you were supporting your child’s wishes.
Story 4: good apple. The fact that this young man has to resort to dumpster diving because his roommates are eating his food is sad. The other roommates are bad apples. I always check if it’s okay for me to eat something that I didn’t personally buy. On the bright side for him … maybe his roommates will be hesitant to eat his stuff from now on.

At all the schools I have worked at, the only exceptions were during major testing and schoolwide locker searches. Other than that, students who needed to use the bathroom could go. At the high schools, products were available (25¢) in the bathrooms. At the middle schools, students needed to go to the nurse to get products in an emergency.

Story 1- at my school we have 4 times a day we can go so like everyone can go 4 times a day
    1-anytime before break
    2- at break
3-lunch ( an hours or so after break)
4- anytime after lunch if and hour has passed
So I think she should’ve been allowed but I think crap apple just bc of the way she reacted

I know I'm a little late but wanted to put my input. Story 1: Based on just the information we have about how the teacher responded to the person going into their classroom, I'd say it had nothing to do with policy. and from my experience (I have been to 2 different high schools in different states) they have always had a nurse on campus and products (only know from my female friends). That being said I also don't particularly like how the parent responded either. So I have to go with bad apple for both because screaming at someone isn't going to get anyone anywhere.

Due to different reasons I started my period at 10 years old and I now know that I have a medical condition that causes this. While I couldn't use the products, my public middle school had them in the bathrooms. Feminine products are literally a necessity for life. Though I for sure would have asked why she wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom. I did have a very ignorant male teacher in high school who didn't believe women menstruate and I did have to go before and after his class though. Also kudos to that grandma because lying to your child about something that big isn't acceptable.

Story 1- I went to a rural school district (super widespread because of all the farms) and I doubt we had more money than most other schools, but I think they were able to work the budget just the right way that we had a nurse and products available (local businesses may have donated the products). I think since it’s such a close community in our county that enough things were donated so the school could spend their money on other things.

Regarding first story, not a teacher but at a call center. We used to have a "Vader box" with all of our time of the month supplies. A team lead kept it at her desk, and women would just go in and grab them if they forgot.

For story two. I cannot fathom as the mother forgiving the father after he presumably had an affair. When the kids find out and the middle child did, it inherently teaches these kids that this behavior is ok and is normal. My parents are divorced and my dad was in an abusive relationship with my mother. She is very manipulative. Don’t get me wrong I do love her she has done a lot for us but I understand her behavior is not acceptable thanks to my dad leaving. He is still very much involved in our lives (my brother and mine) but he does set boundaries for my mom’s behavior. I am now a freshman in college and I can say whole heartedly that it is thanks to my dad leaving and showing/teaching us that that kind of manipulation and toxicity in a relationship is not ok or to be tolerated. Thanks to him showing me it is ok to say no and to exit a situation like that I have thankfully gotten out of various relationships that were pretty toxic. I was able to recognize it and step away so I can’t believe the mother of the children would just allow her kids to be in a situation where the father was clearly unfaithful.

I dumpster dived in my 20's because food was scarce. However, my roomies were equally struggling so it was a team sport. We did it together. However I do agree with Rebecca that letting room mates know is a great idea. We had a shelf designated for such food and heavily cleaned it. People gotta eat!

For story 3, it hits home. My moms step mom, my grandma is crazy. She is horrible to my mom and it makes my blood boil. My grandpa still chooses to be with her and so they barely talk to my family anymore since we moved and other things that my grandma has done. When I get older I will be cutting contact with them if A. She continues to act like this or B. If my grandpa is still with her and she still acts like this. I love my grandpa a lot, but I would rather not talk to them then see them be disrespectful, manipulative and disgusting toward my mother❤

At my school, you get three bathroom passes in every class. Once you ran out, you can still go, but it’s a tardy. If you get enough tardys here, you could lose credit for some classes. I personally haven’t used any passes this whole year, since we can also go between classes and at lunch.

So I have a chronic illness that made it to where I might need to leave the room suddenly for either the bathroom or nurse. 3:26 (Stomach issues) The school initially would only allow me to have a nurses plan (mainly because teachers aren’t legally obliged to follow it) eventually it was obviously not working so they relented and allowed me to get a 504 (they did not like anyone to have a 504 or iep they would fight it or take it away every chance they got. My friend was dyslexic and they took hers away because she had good grades and wouldn’t reinstate it til she failed a class because “there’s no reason to justify the 504 if the student had good grades”). Thankfully the year I got mine the asst principal had taken it over from the guidance counselor for a year b/c the guidance counselor was unempathetic and causing problems with it. In mine they had it stated that I had to be allowed to run out of class for the bathroom or nurse. It also stated someone had to check on me and make sure I made it in case something happened. However broad bathroom policies with no exceptions are pretty bad. From a medical standpoint restricting bathroom use can lead to a lot of health issues. Now my Kindergarten teacher was actually the reason a girl in my glass was taken to the dr and getting diagnosed with diabetes. The girl was constantly going to the bathroom (multiple times an hour) and the teacher followed her a few times to see if she was goofing off and when she realized it she talked to the school nurse and her parents. She had twin baby brothers at home so her bathroom use went unnoticed by the parents.

story 1: I'm a pre service teacher and I will soon be on placement. In my country, you can potentially get in trouble for giving out feminine hygiene products in class because it can potentially be seen as violating student privacy since other students could potentially gain sensitive information such as health issues.

It’s so hard to judge, because at least here in my province in Canada. We don’t have nurses, at all, ever, has never been a thing. Would have been helpful, probably. But in public education, or even private-it just isn’t a thing here. Bandaids are at the office, and in high school if you got permission from a parent, the office staff could give you a Tylenol tablet. Other than that…if you’re sick enough, you just get a call home/to parents. Although that wasn’t always even helpful. I remember feeling absolutely horribly sick, I think I had a weird fever reaction in grade five, and neither of my parents could be reached, nor my third emergency contact. It began shortly after I got to school, and I wasn’t able to be picked up until well into the lunch hour by my after school caregiver (why they couldn’t just have called her first if they couldn’t reach my parents is beyond me, they had to wait until my dad was able to phone and say to have her pick me up and he was then able to later that afternoon-guess it wasn’t written in my student emergency info) . Had to chill for a while in the principal’s office on her couch as the ‘sick room’ with a couch was occupied by a kid having a meltdown…it was awful. To this day I have rarely felt as bad as I felt that morning. I even slept when I finally was home, and I have basically never been able to nap, not since age 3ish and I’m 33. So I must have been quite sick. Whatever it was was short lived, and I was fine the next day but with the whole debacle the day before I was kept home and had to go with my dad to a conference he was going to, but at least there was a couch there for me to read on? Anyways. Times like that would have been useful to have a school nurse. Wish it was more common tbh.

@@MusikGirl23 there have been crazy emergencies at my school where we needed more than a bandage😅 we just play hard in the south/need therapy because of our parents. The nurse that came when I started high school was a blessing. (K-12 is on the same campus, and we all see the same nurse) She was great at her job, and was a far better counselor than the one in middle or high school. She listened when parents, teachers, and staff didn’t… Saving children from terrible situations, and keeping them from walking around all day with broken/fractured bones.
