I believe it's on purpose that they are not styled after what we stereotypically think about when we say "tomboy". Tomboy as a concept is pretty outdated and gendered since it is meant for a woman who is not acting feminine / acting masculine. In the chorus when they say "Yeah, I'll be the tomboy" it feels more like people cannot comprehend their attitude so they just classify it as "tomboy" since it is easier to do so. It's almost like they are saying sure I'll be the tomboy if that's what you can only think of.
In the bridge, Soyeon is also openly saying you'll get what I mean by tomboy by the end of the song. And in the outro, they are emphasising that they don't have to be a man or a woman since we now know people are not just one or the other, it's a spectrum. They are just I-dle being themselves. This is my take on the song so I actually really enjoy the styling choice for the concept :)

Yeah I like that this is breaking binary rather than enhancing it as the term originally was doing, they are turning "tomboy" into an attitude, they don't have to dress "men's clothes" to be a tomboy they are living their way out of the expected female stereotype (which should be discarded ;))
I’m sooo obsessed with this songggg I first I didn’t really like Soyeon’s rap but now I am obsessed with it 😭😭 like I catch myself singing it and I saw an explanation of the lyrics on Twitter so I got what she did it
Tomboy, while referring to the aesthetic of women dressing more masculine, can also refer to the attitude of women being “tougher” than they’re stereotypically expected to act. Women can get called a tomboy just for acting tough/for not acting like the traditional feminine woman even if they don’t fit the stereotypical aesthetic
People also assume that tomboys can’t like feminine things/feminine side just bc they express themselves in a more masculine way
Therefore, it’s neither man nor woman. I can be feminine and masculine. I’ll be the tomboy (encompass both qualities). This is my attitude ^^

Soyeon's verse was a bit odd, but as always, there always a meaning behind her verses. Here's my interpretation: "I don't wanna play this ping-pong
I would rather film a TikTok" - She says that she doesn't want to commit to the back n forth relationship and instead do something insignificant/vain like TikTok.
"Sometimes we swear without cigarettes"- I feel like that's a reference to Soojin's scandal when she was accused of smoking and swearing at the accuser's sister.
I agree about the all English verse it kills the song for me. I completely understand what she was trying to do but it just wasn’t executed well which is sad because Soyeon is a great writer I just wish she would’ve let someone help her make the verse a little more coherent and flow better.
I didn't like Soyeon’s rap at first, but it grew on me. Also feel like everything in lyrics is specially done like this even though it's not what I expected. Also loved their style too! Thank you, Anthony, for your honest reaction. Love seeing your vibes!

soyeon's rap didnt sit well in the first listen too but shes such a grower fr ,, like it gets better with every listen .
Personally really liked the overall vibe of the song except for the rap verse, but maybe I'll get used to it if I listen to it more.
Also loved the overall styling in this music video, especially the flared jeans with cropped leather jackets! Minnie looked absolutely gorgeous in that outfit
Tbh I think the full English verse was a big miss for Soyeon bc she's only hurting her songwriting reputation by with this. Not everyone has to be perfectly fluent in other languages but I think this time it just interrupted the flow of the song overall. Her English raps in KDA songs were completely fine, so to me that means she just needs someone who's honest with her and can help her make the lyrics sound more coherent.
I get that she was trying to appeal to the western millenials/gen z demographic, but it's obvious she didn't grow up in that English-speaking internet culture
the song is definitely catchy, but soyeon’s english rap verse threw me off. i really don’t understand why they decided for it to be english, i personally think it would have been so much better if she wrote something in korean (but i loved her first verse with that “why are you cranky boy”).
overall, the lyrics just felt a little disappointing to me because it could have been a lot more badass to fit the entire concept of the song…the vibe the lyrics gave felt like 8 year old me thinking it was uncool to say i liked pink lmao. that being said, i really liked the production and the rest of the songs on the album are great!
Some cool details to this song which I don't know if you pointed out yet cause I haven't finished the video:
There were 6 balloons coming out of the trunk initially, one of them flying ahead of the others. Cool tribute to Soojin.
Soyeon's rap is also sort of a reference to Soojin's scandal. The first hint is her talking about loving dancing and her friends (Soojin was our main dancer and she's known to be the most caring person ever, like a mom to the members). Of course, those lyrics also have a different interpretation which is why Soyeon was so genius to write them. But what really cemented my theory that her rap was a reference to Soojin was the, "Sometimes we swear without cigarettes" line. Soojin was accused of "bad behavior" such as smoking and swearing in middle school, so Soyeon saying without cigarettes is funny to many nevies, because it's basically calling out the false accusations. Again, this line can be interpreted differently, once again showcasing Soyeon's genius lyricism.
The album is so good 👏🏼 they didn’t disappoint

Hi, you need to see their other song My Bag (live showcase). The girls do rap, all of them. Im bet you gonna love it ❤
Soyeon rap has a lot of meaning, first of all the "ping-pong" part is related to going back and forth when there is a confrontation. Then the "Tik Tok" is a bit tricky, in korean (abruptly translated) "Tiki Taka" is a reference to 2 soccer players doing passes to goal which could refer to working together or just two people making joke back and forth.
"Your mom raise you as a prince - But this is queendom right ?" this line is a diss to korean culture where boy are raised as litterally prince and girl raised like housewives/girls who shouldn't behave badly
The rest of the rap part is clearly a reference to Soojin case, with all the allegation she had for the bully case (dansing -> Main dancer, Friends -> Soojin being the person who Soyeon was the closest in the group and the rest represente allegations over Soojin)
In the CD version, which is the encensored version the "I like to Eh on drinking whiskey" is in fact "I like to sex on drinking whiskey". This a line that suit the song because "Tomboy" isn't refering to western conception of it, but more on eastern conception of it where drinking, smoking, having sex with anyone isn't apropriate for "girly girl"
The whole point of Tomboy is to say that they are not doll, they are not perfect but they love who they are for what they are, and they shouldn't be gendered for their achievement etc...
I can totally understand why some people didn't liked Soyeon's rap verse on Tomboy, it is clearly not gramatically correct, however it fits the song and the theme, and it is arguably good with a singing rap pace
It is clearly not one of her stronger rap piece she wrote, but when you understand the meaning I personnally found it pretty strong
They talked about "a taboo" during the whole song and Soyeon also does it in her rap part, no one speak about past member, but she showed that she cared about it
She showed that even if Soojin isn't here she will not be forget at least for them

I thought I was the only one, everything is perfect, but that rap throws it off for me
Yeah this has been growing on me slowly I've found parts and things that I like about the song on each listen but I feel like I'm still waiting to fully like it. I'm not going to lie I do think if I liked the rap verse better it would have locked in for me. It's been a bit iffy for me lately dumdi dumdi and Hwa both didn't really stay on my playlist but there's no doubt that they are one of the fiercest groups they rock the concept for sure.
Honestly, to me Soyeon's rap was the first thing I loved in this song(other than the chorus) because the lyrics were Iconic to me and it's kinda easy to sing along to(?) But yeah it's fun reading everyone's perspective in this comsec

There is a korean cultural ideal of what an acceptable feminine woman. A woman who swears, is assertive, shuns what is "pretty" or cute is not the ideal girlfriend vibe. I think what's SUPER astounding about this to me is how ABSOLUTELY counterculture this is for idol music that usually tries to stay as safe and anti political as possible the timing of this is incredible. Gender conflicts are HUGELY relevant right now and korean feminists are hated and called misandrists and korean antifeminists are so prevalent that they won the election for the conservative candidate who used it as a lynchpin issue. I LOVE they did this and I'm wondering if it will get blowback from korean general public. If I see it happening I'm going to buy 5 albums istg lol.
I do think the english verse was pretty awkward but I can see her thematically basically saying "I'm not going to play these back and forth games. I'm a new generation I'd rather spend my time doing what I want to and living my life to the fullest in the way that suits me I honestly don't give a shit about you" obviously lyricism in a language you aren't fluent in suffers but I can't write lyrics worth a shit in english much less in another language so 🤷

i kinda wish they toned down the amount of english lyrics. although i do get the message and what theyre trying to say and it makes sense, but the grammatical errors and some of the delivery kinda put me off sometimes. i'm sure they would have nailed the meaning AND delivery more in korean language. overall i love the comeback i think they did amazing especially with how innovative they are with their message, but as a song i just didn't feel this one as much.

I think Soyeon's rap verse is supposed to be taken with tongue firmly in cheek. When I heard the Tik Tok line I was confused at first, but it kinda makes sense when the first line is basically "I really don't want to do this stupid thing" and she'd rather do something else that's inane to waste her time then play games with this dude. I never disliked the rap verse, but I, too, don't understand why it's fully in English. There's obviously some nuances there that she can't convey correctly in English. But I think it's supposed to be more Gwen Stefani "this shit is Bananas", than it is some deep rhyme.
so you know how 'fighting' is an english word but in korean it doesn't mean what the direct english translation is? 'tomboy' is similar in that vein. while the typical western understanding of tomboy is moreso a girl doing 'masculine' activities and wearing masc clothing, in korea the word took on a new meaning to represent the attitude and mindset of a woman who rejects traditional standards and limitations placed on woman. idle mention that they want to break the prejudices in the industry women face. the cultural context of sk being very anti-feminist currently also probably inspired a cb like this.
i do agree though that the full eng verse from soyeon was not the best, even though i did love the word play (basically 'tiktok' sounds a lot like 'tikataka' with is korean for a 'back and forth' but expressed through onomatopoeia much like 'ping pong' is in english). but the rest of the verse and flow sounded very juvenile and out of place TT
still really loved this song though and i hope more kpop groups do rock-influenced title tracks!

@@WOLFMANN187 happy my explanation registered well! ngl seeing the reaction to this comeback was a little frustrating bc some people forget about the K in 'kpop.' they are korean/asians and so that's obviously what frame of reference they are going to have. and considering this song as gone viral in korea and different parts of asia, it's clear the message resonates with the intended audience. but yeah the criticism is fair as well and i don't expect everyone to like it!

Note: There was a comment about how if you don't like Soyeon's verse, it's because you don't get it. I disagree but just wanted to comment more generally than by responding to that directly.
As someone who first didn't like the verse and now finds it okay (it's catchy, and I get what Soyeon was going for), I would say the main reason it threw me off on the first couple listens is bc the lines just sound a bit awkward at first and took getting used to.
Now, I'm assuming Soyeon wrote her own verse as she usually does. I'm saying this with the utmost respect to her, but it just wasn't Soyeon's best work. She is capable of amazing songwriting but the rap verse didn't showcase that to her full potential mostly due to the fact that she probably isn't super comfortable with writing full English lines yet (which is totally fine! Not everyone has to have perfect English, and her Korean writing is already so wonderful that it isn't a flaw at all). So my main issue was that she could've showcased her message so much better if she either got someone to help with the English, or did a part of it in Korean.
So yeah, it is my least favourite part of the song, but I don't dislike it. It has a fun tone to it and she rides the beat well, it just could've been better which is dissappointing.

I honestly don't understand how people don't like Soyeon's English verse in the song? I even understand this guy, because he's a GUY. But, for me, this verse has everything to do with a lot of thoughts about women, especially those of generation Z, which is the vast majority of Idle. The part about TikTok may seem nonsensical to you, but that's because you didn't seek to understand the music.
