Well, the first Portal game is great and the Lab Rat comic is decent, but PORTAL 2 was so atrocious that I couldn't even comprehend just how Valve messed up so badly. I can't think of what could've caused the sequel to be THIS horrible.
If you want to discover Half-Life and even if you want to rediscover it, play directly its Valve-approved fan remake, Black Mesa, which took 16 years of development. This is just every quality of the original game but massively improved, including Source graphics and lore details that help connecting it with the other Half-Life/Portal series titles, and a complete overhaul of the final chapter on alien planet Xen which is now kinda magical. To my opinion this fangame is one of the best games released in 2020.
If they can get behind the graphics, it’s better to start with the original and see the massive jump in quality in HL2. If they played starting from Black Mesa, a lot of details will go amiss.
Including the year of release with each title would help a lot for people who aren't familiar with every game, and would provide some much needed context.
I'd never put Condition Zero behind Ricochet and Artifact. It introduced bots and the deleted scenes were pretty fun and the closest we got to true singleplayer Counter-Strike.
Fair enough I guess. I think Condition Zero is good but not amazing. Ricochet and Artifact are not good games at all, but when compared to the travesty that was PORTAL 2, they're a good treat to play once in a while.
Valve is the type of company that will drop a Half-Life 2 Episode 3 or Half-Life 3 surprise on us when we least expect it. They made Half-Life Alyxx so they haven't given up on it.

All this Half-Life talk takes me back to my game add-on/expansions with one of my favorites titled They Hunger Trilogy. Although not a Valve game, this zombie apocalypse freeware trilogy was a sure hit in my opinion.
Uhm? they gave the tools to allow their games to be modded, which is awesome, bought their games from them and then they hired the people who made them, to help create better versions. And the fact they mentioned the original creators name in this list should be a clue that they were given credit. Icefrog, Jesse Cliffe etc don't feel exploited by Valve. It's a shame more companies don't act this way in fact.

The top 3 is without a doubt correct, inarguably correct. Portal 2 is the third best Valve game, Half Life is the second one and Half Life 2 is the undisputed champion. Hell, i'll go as far as saying Half Life 2 is easily the best fps game ever and most probably the best game ever.
its a good list, Ranking outside the rules Id say Black mesa and garry's mod are the best out there. Garry's mod basically gives you everything in the source engine you could ever dream of and more. Black mesa is a fucking blast. The visceral nature of that game really makes it a 10 and I wouldn't even consider playing any of the older games over it

They may have made a few bad games such as Ricochet (unpopular competition game), PORTAL 2 (worst Valve game for many reasons), and Artifact (disappointing product result), but Valve always tries their best to make some of the best games of all time.

Enemies in Half-Life don't even have pain states: you can blast a guy in the unprotected face point blank with a shotgun and he'll not only survive sometimes, but will immediately return fire. That's a problem even Wolf3D had already solved. More generally, its plays like a predecessor of Eurojank games, which I suppose makes it ahead of its time in that regard. Most advocates will at most gloss over how much Xen sucks, but that's it. Half-Life 2 is poorly paced, especially with the drawn out vehicle segments. Its shooting is forgettable and generic except for the gravity gun which only works on an unsatisfyingly small and arbitrary collection of objects. The sound design is weak; none of the weapons sound like they have any oomph. The soundtrack barely exists and sucks when it does. The puzzles are mostly seesaw puzzles. The ending is one of the all-time worst. I could go on. The real best would be the Portal games and it's not even close.
