The trailer showed only a fraction of what makes this film great. Both Brown and Wright give amazing performances. Parts of this film are comedy, but it's also a family drama and a deep character study. GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
my review is in here omg thank you letterboxd and thank you jefferey and sterling (and of course cord jefferson), i saw this movie at tiff and not only was it my favorite of the festival it’s one of my favorites of the year
Very authentic, it demonstrated that if you make a lame, pandering, safe movie for white libs to feel good about themselves, you’ll get an award. American Fiction is like a less entertaining Collateral Beauty. It’s embarrassing
Glad Jeffery knew that the row v. Wade joke was in the book. Percival Everett needs to remain relevant in the talks - he’s too brilliant to be forgotten.
It is THE most perfectly crafted, fine tuned film. Every choice is so well thought out. It sings to you. I’m so proud of this film and this amazing cast and crew. ❤
It’s a safe, pandering film for people who own “girl boss” t shirts. It’s a fake progressive movie that’s too lazy and mediocre to actually address any systematic issues with any wit or bite
Not even close to the top 50 best of 2023, you clearly haven’t seen more than 5 films from 2023. I mean, it’s a bland, gutless film designed to pander to academy voters. It’s the movie equivalent of a “laugh, live, love” wooden poster you get for 4 dollars at the reject shop. It’s a film designed to make boring wine mums feel good for watching a movie with a black lead.
@@samb8744 I whole heartedly disagree. It's the first movie from Hollywood in maybe 70 years to thoughtfully criticize Hollywood (Sure movies have criticized Hollywood for being fake, but that's not nuance, everyone knows the place is fake). You won't find a modern movie from L.A. that directly calls out the woke left like this movie did.
This is why I love Euel Arden's novel -- Down Here in the Warmth. It actually paints black people like ....OMG... regular people !!! In fact... even though its a book about racial strife, it barely mentions race.
This movie is theatrical art and Oscar worthy, not like the make believe superheroes hanging from cables next to green screens. This is true art imitating life.
This movie was far more bold than Poor Things. All Poor Things did was make fun of dudebro Gaston types but this went ahead and made fun of its audience.
Those adjectives seem nice but it isn't especially with the end reference of "black American men". It insuates that the majority of black American men are NOT or its so unbelievable.
@@sharlisa2001 Not really. She's just noting that these men are especially articulate. There's nothing wrong with that. They ARE especially articulate. Even more so than the average person. I don't see what's wrong with acknowledging that.
@@jeremiahnoar7504 Thank you for comprehending that I am referencing two specific men and that I am in no way denigrating ALL other Black men. Really, it is crystal clear......Easily comprehended........Nothing difficult to understand.
of the supporting actors...Sterling K. Brown merits the oscar chachka most, since Mescal was clearly snubbed. make-up made the favourite, not his acting. Better than Oppenheimer, Barbie, Maestro and Anatomy of a fall. But not All of us Strangers, or Saltburn. What a year for Mos!!!!
You'll have to explain that because I don't see it. Maybe you're just inventing controversy where there is none. People seem to be doing that a lot these days.
It’s a very bad film with amateur writing, editing and pacing, mixed with some atrocious product placement and a complete lack of transgressive-ness or biting satire. It’s funny how this got an Oscar, because it’s the very kind of lazy pandering trash that the movie thinks it’s critiquing. You can tell the filmmakers think they’re making a really witty and cutting commentary, when in reality, it’s a toothless, faux-progressive mediocrity.
Oh man, they started with the one I was hoping for! 😹
I came here from the app itself just for that 😅

Jeffrey Wright has one of my favorite voices in the industry.
I'm mesmerized by his voice. Definitely has a James Earl Jones quality to it.
A perfectly cast film! Everyone deserved those Oscar nominations.
Beautiful writing, Beautriful acting, Beautiful cinematography. Great art.
Best movie I’ve seen in a while. An intellectual dark comedy. Loved every minute
Love that description, “intellectual dark comedy”. Best way to put the film!

I’m from Scituate, MA. It was SO COOL to see my hometown on the big screen.
I need a podcast with these two immediately
This movie was fantastic ! So authentic, so true❤

@@samb8744 it's literally the opposite of pandering
Loved this movie. Thank you for what you do. Congrats to everyone on the wins and nominations!!
Sterling K Brown is 🔥
Glad Jeffery knew that the row v. Wade joke was in the book. Percival Everett needs to remain relevant in the talks - he’s too brilliant to be forgotten.
Man, was this movie so much better than the trailer led me to believe. A must see-great characters.

5 stars for AF. I loved surprise Keith David!!
Phenomenal movie! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The two of them were perfect in this movie!!!!
This movie is easily a new favorite! I love they're dynamic chemistry in this movie.
Easily the best movie of 2023. And honestly one of the best movies of our modern time.

Best movie of the year! I enjoyed it so much ❤
I’m glad this movie got made AND I’m glad I saw it
This was a GREAT film and a video! ❤️🖤💚
I don’t know about Roe v. Wade jokes in movies, but there was an episode of Seinfeld that put it to very funny use.
Just saw it and it was wonderful

American Fiction was "WAY.TOO.DAMN.ACCURATE" but they only gave it 3.5 stars?! Interesting. 🤔
Loved this movie!
I loved this film SO much.
Also, every film needs a Lorraine ❤
Sterling, I hope you get your oscar ❤ loved the film!
Great great movie!!
This movie is theatrical art and Oscar worthy, not like the make believe superheroes hanging from cables next to green screens. This is true art imitating life.
sterling k brown is a powerhouse and he has a long successful career ahead of him, me nah ask christ
He's 47. He already has a long successful career
Grew up a couple of miles for Scituate- shoutout to Duxbury!
Fyi there are several Row v Wade jokes. I think Jay Leno had one about Bush thinkng it was two ways to cross a river.
This movie was far more bold than Poor Things. All Poor Things did was make fun of dudebro Gaston types but this went ahead and made fun of its audience.
Two elegant….intelligent…..articulate……talented Black American men…….🖤💫⚡️✨

How did you see the movie and write "articulate"? Are they also clean?
"Fantastic film." - 1 White Man
mahershala ali would complete these two in a film💯

when are y’all gonna use one of my reviews 🙄
Read* not reads 🙄
I liked this right up to the end, ie mansplaining pre- and post- Roe v Wade.
How were they mansplaining at the end?
You'll have to explain that because I don't see it. Maybe you're just inventing controversy where there is none. People seem to be doing that a lot these days.
Doing these videos for movies that only film festival people have seen......
I barely made it into an advance screening in a major city this week, can confirm lots of these reviews are hilarious only if you've seen the film lol
There was an advance screening of this at Regal movie theaters a few weeks ago. That's when I saw it. Then I got a physical advance screener for it.
Sterling K. Brown completely missing the point of the movie being all glad that people are specifically being hired for how they look.
What point did he miss?
Probably one of my least favorite movies from 2023
Really? I thought it was amazing.

you don't know what you are talking about
Care to explain what factors of the story contributed to this opinion? I’m genuinely curious.
Come on Sterling...it wasn't that funny.
nice to see 2 middle aged gæy black couple together
Gray?
