    It’s like just the “Watch Later” on TH-cam!! I feel like I need to watch these 300+ videos when I know it’s just something mildly interesting it’s not something I have to. Like play games and watch videos that you like! Don’t feel pressured!!

    That's a really interesting take, and one of the best I've seen.
    I'm in my 50s and only got back into gaming recently, now my family is grown and I've reduced my working hours.
    Just like you, when I was young each new game was a major investment, and something precious which I would play endlessly. Now, I have sufficient disposable income that when the Steam sales come along I can jump in with both feet. Before I knew it, my backlog was up to about 100 games - more games than I've completed in my life to date. I too started stressing over the backlog.
    I'm neither A nor B in your examples. I get anxious: that I won't be good enough to be able to play a game, it'll be too complex for me; or that I won't enjoy it and will find out I wasted my money (which is spent anyway) as well as the investment of time trying to learn its ins and outs; or (ridiculously) that I'll run out of games I really want to play.
    But lately I'm coming to a similar conclusion to you. In my case, I'm going to lose my eyesight over the next 5-10 years, and then gaming (certainly as I currently know it) will be done. I want to get to that point having squeezed all the enjoyment I can out of them.
    I don't have to play early (dated graphics, clunky combat) games in a series, I can go straight to the one people generally agree is the polished pinnacle, or at least play from the one where it got good, even if the whole lot came as a bundle.
    I don't have to play to the credits if I'm hating a game a few hours in.
    Conversely, if I'm enjoying a game, I can indulge myself in all the side quests. Hell, I can replay it if I want, take a different path, see how much more sense the early parts make now I know the whole story. Play like I did as a teenager.
    Enjoy your time gaming now. You never know what tomorrow will bring. But you seem a bright and thoughtful young man, I hope and expect it will be good.

    This was definitely eye-opening. I was feeling really overwhelmed by the pile of games I have on my shelf, but that last sentence, "It's not a backlog, it's your childhood dream come true." really snapped me out of it. I had a big game collection as a kid (of course not as big as now) but I never saw it as a stressor back then, I just loved having so many fun options. It's crazy how I started letting myself think that I need to play every single game as fast as possible. I never would've fell in love with the games that I did as a child if I did that. I was here wondering why playing video games didn't spark the same joy as it did when I was a kid. And I realized it was because I stopped seeing it as a fun hobby and more like a chore I needed to do. Even if I managed to complete my whole collection quickly, it'd be a waste because I wouldn't enjoy my time. So thank you for this, it was definitely the wake-up call I needed.

      I apologize for such a late response!! I'm so so so so SO glad my video helped you. Video games are many things; art, a hobby, a skill, an e-sport, the list goes on... but above all, they're an escape from reality. Video games are the one art form where you can TRULY be lifted out of your seat and become one with that world, I mean, you literally have a tangible impact on what happens in that world due to the fact that YOU'RE the one controlling a character on screen! I feel like that's a fact many take for granted, understandably so, considering we've had video games for half a century now. Considering how magical of an experience that is on paper, not to mention just how truly magical it is experiencing it for yourself, why rush that? Why rush your time in this digital wonderland? Whether you're Steve slaying the Ender Dragon, whether you're Trevor shooting a bunch of hillbillies and blowing up their house, whether you're Nathan Drake hanging from the edge of a train, whether you're a barista serving customers in Coffee Talk, whether you're falling in love with your romance partner of choice in (insert RPG here), whether you're simply tending to your farms in Harvest Moon, or, maybe, you're swinging through New York as SPIDER-MAN?!?! No matter what wonderland you choose, let yourself get immersed and fall in love with the wonder of it all. The real world... sucks, it really does, so don't turn your wonderland into yet ANOTHER stressor on top of the stresses you already deal with in the real world. As long as you're having fun and enjoying yourself, that's what matters. Whether it's for 1 hour (games like Abzu) or 100+ hours (games like Persona 5 Royal) just embrace the experience to the fullest. Embrace the wonder, embrace those magical childhood feelings, embrace the twists and turns of the stories and worlds and everything in between, embrace the joy, embrace the sadness, embrace the moments of peace, embrace the fun, embrace the magic. 🎮❤️

    So I've watched like 10 backlog videos to see what other people think about it and their experiences, and yours has been the best so far. Rushing playing through games kills the fun and just isn't worth it! I can tell you really enjoy the games you play, and that's very important to sustain a hobby.

    • @GrotesqueYT
      @GrotesqueYT  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️ I completely agree. Rushing through games just doesn't make any sense to me... it does nothing but absolutely destroy the experience of the person playing. It's the same as trying to rush through a movie or TV show... and if that sounds absolutely stupid or ridiculous in context, that's because it is 😂 video games are many things; entertainment, an escape, a hobby, a lifestyle, a vessel for many forms of content creation, and most importantly, art. Any and all forms of art deserve to be savored and respected. Rushing through a game is essentially the equivalent of looking the devs right in the eye and saying "your game is cool and all, but I'm trying to get it over with ASAP" like, how disrespectful is that? 😅 that's just how I see it. I savor every experience, whether it's a linear story-based game, or whether it's an infinitely replayable game like Call of Duty or Tetris. What can I say, I love video games!
      Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and comment, it means the world to me! Much love ❤️

    You hit this on the head. The first step is to stop calling it a backlog since backlog implies unfinished work that NEEDS to be completed. It’s a library.
    I used to use a random wheel pick and just threw every game into it but I quickly found out the issue with that is I never wanted to play the games it picked. So funny as it sounds I made a spread sheet and categorized everything as well as well as giving it a rating of how much I want to play each games. Then once a month or so I kinda reevaluate the list and change games if my interest had changed.
    I don’t think everyone needs to do this but it really helped me get a grip on my games and I no longer have decision paralysis. I can just sort by genre, platform, how long it takes to beat, and so on.

    My problem is i have so many, i don't know what to choose, so then i don't play any. I want to play them all. But when i do finally play a game if im enjoying a game i take my time.

      one suggestion i have for you is to catalog all your games then grab a random number generator and play the game of whichever number you got. if you aren't feeling that then redo the number generator until you land on a game you do feel like playing at that moment.

    I'm basically exhibit A lol, but I don't even end up picking a game to play in the end, the analysis paralysis weighs too heavy on me, puts me completely off. If anything actually, I'm 3/4 A and 1/4 B, I typically like to take my time with the games I play, but can never choose what to play. Anyways, I love this video and I've went through the emotions myself with it all. I've tried telling myself to take my time, enjoy the games. I've also tried telling myself to smash them all out quickly, so I have less of a burden on myself. Doesn't quite work out either of those ways lol. My plan of attack in the first place, starting after Christmas, is just to not purchase games anymore. Too many deals pop up and I can't resist, or I hear about x game on TH-cam by influencers, which then influences me to go pick x game up lol. Also happens in other ways too, but in general I just need to stop making game purchases. I'm an adult now, need to learn and teach myself a lot of things which I won't go into detail about, but for sure in the new year, I don't wanna be buying anymore games. The amount of times I've said this, never held myself to my word is a joke lol. Love the way you lay it out in this video though, which goes hand in hand with the refraining from purchasing games in the first place. Might make me more interested in finishing the games I own, take more time with them and hopefully just convince myself I don't need to own another game, because I'm already playing tonnes of games in the first place.

    I have like 15 unplayed ps4 games and hundreds of PC games that I haven't even checked (many of them are giveaways). That keeps me from buying new games or even a PS5 or a new computer.

    My death bed confession. "I wish i played more video games"
    How do you beat so many games. I play a ton but I'm only through 20 games this year. 90 games ago puts me in 2018

      Honestly, I just don't have a life, nor do I have any friends, nor do I engage in any social interactions 😂 I wake up, work, game, sleep, repeat. This is just how it's been for me since I moved a few years back, but I'm honestly content with my simple little life. This is truly the happiest I've ever been and it's allowed me to absolutely plow through this backlog over the past couple years!

    Bro honestly I was looking for a video like this 😆 literally because I wanted to hear someone saying the same thing I was already thinking.
    I went and bought a ps2 and a bunch of old games for some nostalgia and stuff and keep in mind this is right after I made the decision to go back to the basics and play like I used to. 1 game at a time until I got bored or wanted to try a new game. I started to try to juggle 3 games at the same time and all of them don't technically end and I was getting stressed and not enjoying myself as much because 1 I was barely making any progress on the games and 2 I would always have to try to remember what I was doing on every game and get into the mindset of that particular game and it wasn't as fun.
    I really liked hearing this video and it's the only one I have seen actually addressing why having the backlog mentality is bad and not fun. Everything you said was exactly what I was thinking! So I'm going to approach it the way you do it :) sometimes it's just nice to know your not alone.
    I think one thing that sucks sometimes is when you actually love multiple games and you want to play all of them but with life and a job being there it's honestly just not possible.

    • @GrotesqueYT
      @GrotesqueYT  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm glad the video could help!! So I've been "tackling the backlog" seriously for the last 2 years. I casually did it for the near 2 decades that I've been gaming before that of course, but I dove in head first and started taking it very seriously about 2 years ago, due to having so many games that I want to experience. 2022 I beat 160 games, and so far in 2023 have beaten 109. So with that being said, I'd like to think I have some expertise and useful knowledge on the topic. With that being said, here's my biggest tips for you:
      1. Play one game at a time. I know this may sound odd at first, and some people might even think "wouldn't that get boring?" and I wondered the same thing, but after doing it for 2 years straight, it has actually INCREASED my enjoyment level, experience, immersion, and love with every game I've played. It doesn't matter if it's a 1 hour indie game, or a 30 hour RPG. Just try it. Trust me on this one. Your experience, love, and enjoyment with those games along with the rate at which you knock out the games you want to play will grow exponentially. I even take this approach with 100 hour RPGs, my proudest example being when I beat Assassin's Creed Valhalla in 5 days, and I thoroughly enjoyed and loved every single second. Again, may sound like an odd approach if you've never tried it before, but don't knock it til you try it. That single tip alone has helped many people that I've talked too have a much better and more efficient experience with knocking out their backlog, including myself.
      2. Slow down and enjoy the ride!! Sometimes it can be easy to get caught up in wanting to play/beat so many different games, and while that's totally okay, just remember to slow down, and savor every second of each game you play/experience, as you can only experience them for the first time once. Think of it like a piece of cake: would you rather scarf it down too fast and make yourself sick? Or would you rather savor every last bite and lick of icing in order to truly enjoy it, and have a happier/easier time digesting it? No matter what you do, just make sure you don't rush through any of the games, and make sure you enjoy em! Just like I said in the vid, pick up a game (or look at it in your digital library), maybe watch a trailer for it, just do SOMETHING to build up that child-like enthusiasm and excitement to play a specific game, and once you get yourself worked up, dive in and play on! Whether it's for 30 minutes after work, or 30 hours during the weekend, just make sure you make each and every experience worth it, and make sure you allow it to digest before moving onto the next. Wouldn't want to overwhelm yourself with too many pieces of cakes at once!
      3. You can't play every game. There will ALWAYS be games coming out that we want to play, even beyond the day we die! So objectively and literally speaking, we will NEVER actually be able to play every single game we want, as there will be many more games that come out beyond the time that our time here on Earth expires! Furthermore, we can't even play every game that has released already, and that's okay! That just makes the ones that we CAN experience all the more special! If you ever feel overwhelmed, thinking "I HAVE TO BEAT ALL THESE GAMES!" just remember what I said in this video: when you die, who will care how many games you've beaten? Will you care? No, cause you'll be dead silly! Will anyone else care? No, cause they have their own backlogs! So just play the games that you can, and whatever you get to play is what you get to play! As long as you enjoy them and enjoy the journey along the way, then that's all that matters. Remember: it's not about the destination, it's about enjoying the journey (Aka: it's about playing and enjoying the games, not just beating them to check another one off the list)
      I have a lot of mental disorders, one of them being OCD, so it takes aLOT of talking to myself and thoroughly thinking things through in a detailed and complex manner as I did in this comment, sometimes taking days of analytical thinking like this to reach a conclusion, but this is what helped me overcome the dreaded "backlog stress". If you're normal unlike me, then you probably didn't need all of the comparisons and imagery to help you sort this all out, but if your mind is a bit racey and complicated like mine, then hopefully this helps, as everything that I said in this comment is everything that I said to myself and talked myself through and what ended up helping me change my mindset and crush "backlog stress"!
      Sorry again for such a long comment, it's just that I know the feeling as I've been there many times before, and I just really wanted to do my best to help. Good luck, you got this! Game on! 🎮♥️

      @@GrotesqueYT hey bro honestly it made me smile seeing you actually take the time to send me such a long reply back! Definetly didn't expect it and I'm not complaining one bit haha. I never used to have the attitude of wanting to beat/ play all these different games and beat them. I would play one game and then when I was bored or beat it, I would move on to the next one but all the sudden I started thinking " a man's not guaranteed a long life, what if I don't get to experience/reexperience all these amazing games before I die? :(" so I started to play to many games and just got dang near burnt out. Like I loved games and still wanted to play but when I would play I would just feel stressed. So after watching your video and now reading this comment I'm definetly gonna just be playing one game at a time! Thank you, your a legend, peace ;) lol
