I'm keeping pretty much all of my games and adding to my collection. But I'm not keeping call of duty or any sports games. But I do like racing games. I collect for ps1, ps2, ps3, ps4, ps5, switch, ds, 3ds, nes, snes, n64, game gear, dreamcast, gamecube, wii, wii u, gameboy, gameboy color, gba, psvr and PSVR2. Not too many physical games for PSVR2 but some are coming thanks to LRG. I buy from them.

You've hit the phase. You'll feel better getting rid of the stuff you just don't play. Rgt, game chasers, etc. Have all stated they sold off the stuff they didn't play or have no connection to. We have all fell into the trap of buying games just because it's a game on sale.

I know some people will deny it but it feels like the market is heading towards a recession. Lots of people are downsizing meaning more games will be out in the wild meeting the demand from other collectors or people just getting into the hobby. If you look on Price Charting some games are actually going down, very slowly but they are going down. It'll probably get to a point where it may become afforadable for most people to buy retro games again until the market gets ridiculous again. Probably be a never ending cycle lol.

I think one important thing that you touched on in the video is owning multiple copies of the same game. Unfortunately by the nature of full setting a console you'll necessarily have to own multiple of the same game depending on what sets you're after. My opinion is that it's good to have a 'main' company to collect for and only buy exclusives for other platforms. It helps greatly in avoiding owning multiple copies of the same game.

I sold most of my stuff awhile back. I didn't have anywhere near your collection as I only bought games I was going to play rather then to collect. After awhile it starts to look like plastic clutter and I realized I could use the money for better things. I kept all my favorites and ones that had some memories behind them. Even those would probably be better to sell as they are all older RPGs and worth some money. If I am going to replay I would just emulate on Steamdeck rather then grab the old disc and system. It was hard to decide to let go of some stuff but I have not missed any of it.

Yesterday I did a little of this on my collection, I took out my doubles of a game that I upgraded for instance: "Assassin's Creed 2 Game of the year edition PS3" who has aditional stuff, and took out the normal version, etc. But I like to have an original game, and right next to it a steelbook edition for example. Also having the same game in different consoles for now I think it is best to not get rid of them because maybe some of them have hidden features someday we will discover, like the wii skylanders giants version of the game I had to buy it again just to reset creation crystals and traps. Other games because they have aditional features but the one that doesnt is more meaningfull to me. And I have 2 GTA San Andreas, one which was the one I had as a kid for nostalgia purposes, and one that is in great shape and complete. But I'm glad for this video! :) I have to think about reducing my collection thats for sure! Great video! 👍

That must have been a hard decision for you two though as you stated it was much needed due to space. A while back I had asked about potential game room expansion so I suppose it's come to that time for tough decisions. Would you ever think of possibly just storing some "little used" items away (don't know if you have an attic or crawlspace in your home)? Or maybe "loaning" those to Elisa's brothers? As a collector, I suppose I hate the idea of getting rid of stuff (HOARDER lol) but I do totally get it. *sigh*
I wondering if somewhere down the line the Wii items would be one to considering downsizing only because there's so many consoles that aren't working that they all might die a horrible death like mine.
Best of luck you two on making more room!

I have slimmed down other collections before though and it's super difficult. So I get how difficult it can be. Some I regret getting rid of because they went up in value, other's I have zero regrets. I decided really recently that Switch would be my forever console. It has the most access to retro titles, older ports, indie titles and amazing first party support. Plus the boxes don't take up nearly as much room as any other collection (Bar 3DS/Vita). There's just so much out there for it, thats its physical library now exceeds 1,500 games. And its still going to the extent i will never have them all but if i want to play a variant of it, Switch likely will have it.

Same goes with the loose copies for the 3ds, ds etc. I feel like selling the loose copise in terms of space won't really help much, but having a CBI cartride game is usually the game to go for collectors. Espically games such as Castlevania Classic for the GBA which is on the switch via the Castlevania collection (Limited run). I love playing games, but realistically, I will never find enough time to play and finish all of them. A lot of more questions started surfacing. Am I just surrounding myself with plastic, because I'm missing something in my life? What am I trying to prove in the end if I purchase something rare and expensive? It's fun hobby, but like everything else, it should be done in moderation and never should become an obsession. Downsizing is way to go!

I go through downsizes every couple of years to keep things in check. If you want to cut down your physical cartridge games, but still want to play on original hardware, Id recommend to go with an Everdrive. You can still play all the games and keep your consoles (especially the expensive ones) and not break the bank. I still collect CIB now, no loose anymore, and the everdrive fills in some gaps for when i want to play something i dont have.

Yeah I kinda started thinking about this at the beginning of the pandemic. I started cataloging my collection and realized I really don't need certain game. My whole thing is Im not really big into retro cart games only because unfortunately I can play those from emulators I know its not the same but instead of paying outrageous amounts of money for an RPG game I want to try to play id play it on a rom on the steam deck. Everything more of ps2 and up its all physical games and only games I know id love or games I haven't tried but they look very appealing. I try to just stick with mostly switch games right now. Ive obtained every 3ds game id love before it shut down. I think my next adventure would be DS games id be interested in.

Also love this idea. I did it recent yet again.
Many months ago i downsized my star wars game collection. Literally sat down and played each game for about 5 - 10mins if i didnt enjoy it or think i would ever play it i sold it.
I then Literally sold/selling 99.99% of my gamegear collection. (Had about 100 titles). Only kept one because its based of one of my favorite movies of all time.
I also slimmed down on my harry potter games as well. Was trying to collect all of them. Had a few shelves full and realized that im not going to play these not so good games. Kept only a few. Especially the expensive xbox version.
I also did your idea on the cross generational games. Such as lego star wars. I had 3 copies of that game i just kept the gamecube version because those little disc are cute af and thats the version i grew up playing.
As one of 4 people who collect for the wii u l. Im keeping my full set because i love that console and the journey of collecting it was enjoyable for the most part. Also i have my wall of wii u console varient thats quite enjoyable to look at lol.
Rn im going through my psp games and umd movies. Selling the vast umd movies because im not really into watching movies on such a small screen. As for the psp collection have over 200+ games was going to go for a full set but as i get closer its something that i lost interest in pursuing. Im still collection different psp console variations tho.

There's been so many TH-camrs saying they're slowing down on Game Collecting and I am on the same boat I also slowed down, I haven't gotten to a point where I have to sell off from my personal collection but there are duplicates that I will sell because I realized it'll be better to sell them and hope they go to a good home and actually be enjoyed and played rather than just rot in a closet, or basement just waiting to be played, if ever.
I'm glad I decided early on to collect only for consoles I'm nostalgic for and actually care for. I don't have the biggest collection but it's stuff I'm very happy with and know I want to play eventually, just need the time first, lmao. Light gun games are/were a "priority" (NES, PS2, PS1, Xbox) and I only need a few more PS1 titles.
I find myself only interested in Switch titles right now.

I go through my collection once a year and slim it down and trade or sell anything I know I won't play, have played and don't care to play it again or any filler. Keeps my collection small and only enough for a few shelves.
I rarely buy games new or online, try only to buy in person and use trades. Makes it so I only get games I really want. There are a few I plan on buying day one and they are all new releases on the switch, rpgs of course.
For cartridge based games have you considered a flashcart? A sd2snes or an everdrive64 etc. Still keep the games you love or rare hard to find ones but trade or sell away commons and have the flash to play when you want. I've been thinking about getting an ez flash omega for gba, haven't pulled the trigger on it yet as gba games don't take up alot of space

    • @JRPGLife
      @JRPGLife  ปีที่แล้ว

Good call. We have considered flash carts before, but we still prefer the feeling of placing the actual cartridge into the console.

I definitely understand downsizing, as I’m doing the same now. I love being surrounded by stuff, but at the end of the day….it’s just stuff. Weight…IMO……
all that being said I judge you deeply on one of your decisions…. EVERYBODY NEEDS ALL THE GEX ALL OF THE TIME!!!!!

Interesting video here,(I'd never do it though)
My philosophy is never buy something you don't plan on keeping forever otherwise its a waste. I'm selective with games, anime, Movies, boardgames etc it would be nice to make any of my console collections bigger but I wouldn't buy "just any game" that doesn't appeal to me nor would I pay full price for any of them. Something to consider.
Do you have a video showing your full complete collection of everything from games to collectibles to consoles etc. From what I saw it seems you were not utilizing your limited space very well for one those shelves have too many gaps to them and lots of space wasted in-between dude & dudet. I would use the entire house to display my collection starting with the living room and spreading out and not try to cram it all into one room but that's just me.

    • @JRPGLife
      @JRPGLife  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks so much for commenting! We actually used to have our entire collection in our living room, and we hated it lol. It was too exposed to and repairman or such that we had, plus we really wanted our comfortable livingroom back without all of the games behind us. Part of the reason we moved it all into one room was specifically to keep us from going to big with it. Now that we have hit the capacity, it's time to downsize a bit. Rinse and repeat 😀
And yes we have quite a few collection and gaming tours on our channel, go check them out!

  • @LordsOfSkulls
    @LordsOfSkulls ปีที่แล้ว

if i get. multi copy collections, i think down sizing is fine for when your going for "Complete DLC/Remake" But in certain cases, games are not the same, for example bugs that are part of gameplay in some original copies might not be in remakes (like i like certain glitches in Final Fantasy Tactics) , also certain games might be alot different depending on version. For Example Skylanders games on 3ds VS Consoles = Completely different games. Or Pre- Patched original game of No Many Sky, is different gameplay, vs Now/Patched up version.
So yea if downsizing i say to also keep Original Games from childhoods, that were your copies you got.
in my case, i keep my extras, unless i bought a game i already have, than swap out for best box/cover/manual/disk and get rid of the extra one as trade in.

My collection started with games that I really wanted to play. Later with games that I got in physical back in the days but got rid of them and wanted them back (nostalgia). After that I was buying every system exclusive and well know important games plus remasters and recopillatios. I was getting way too much stuff that I wasn't playing at all, just to say I have it, so for now Im not selling anything however Im getting way more conscious in what Im buying and when Im buying. So no more collectors edition, unless worth the price and content and for a series I really love, doesn't worth the price specially nowadays. Remasters, if I have the original games for example the upcoming Tomb Raider Trilogy. Those are games I have already on PS1 but I want to play them, so that will be a digital steam version (even if a physical version get announced) and down the line when I see it on sale. No rush to play it day one. Same with the Metal Gear Solid Collection. Modern games like MK 1, big fan of the series but again the game isnt finish, I preffer it on Steam so I can play it on PC and on the Steam Deck, and thats a game than in a year you see the complete version in less than 20 dollars. Games that I will buy physical day one or close to release are games like Mario RPG remake, thats a game that you wont see in less than 40.00, so whenever I can I will get it. So no more preorders for me unless is a rare cheap game and a game that I really want to play right away like Double Dragon Gaiden and Shredder's Revenge. Modern triple A games will be digital only and when I see them on sale, and if I really liked that game and want a physical copy on my collection then I wait to find a cheap new copy or a second hand in good condition and price. Have plenty to play and that gives time to find those new $70.00 games on steam way cheaper.

Im also looking forward to tomba coming back on modern day consoles also through LRG. Im very excited about that shantae advance risky revolution gba game. Its finally being released in 2024 on a physcial gba cart thanks to LRG. Plus i need to get the retron 5 so i can play it on the tv. That console supports so many cartridge based games. Gameboy, gameboy color, gba, sega master, game gear and others to name some. They can all be played on modern day tvs thanks to the retron 5. I need to get one.

The SEGA Master System is tied with the TurboGrafx-16 as my favorite retro console, and the 3DO library isn't all bad. There are a lot of 3DO games I like:
    Alone in the Dark
    HELL: A Cyberpunk Thriller
    Shanghai III: Triple Threat
    AD&D Slayer
    Trip'D
    Gex
    The Hoard
    MYST
    DOOM
    StarFighter
    The Incredible Machine
    Street Fighter II TURBO
And quite a few others. A lot of them are available on other platforms, and I totally understand not holding onto a 3DO collection if you aren't a diehard fan, or have a strong nostalgic tie to it.

This video is exactly how I always "collect" now too. Just buy and keep what I wanna play/do play. I'm looking in the near future to just stop buying all together and play what I have, since I've already got enough, but we all know how that works out don't we lol. But I am going to genuinely try my best. It's my birthday in September, so I might get some bought for me, and I may buy for myself a few bits, but at the moment, I'm content with what I have (until the next one comes along, and it's kind of a goal of mine at the moment as well, to just keep and not spend. It's ultimately pointless to have 100s of games anyways, once they're finished, they're kinda done forever after that anyways. I intend once I've finished everything I own, to keep what I really liked playing, basically what I consider to be the best of what I own, then I'll just buy stuff I haven't played before to see if I like it, new releases etc. I wish myself all the luck in the world at this point, and I hope selling your collection was a good idea for you.

Its tough. Where to draw the line & somehow make more but different content, thats a decision that needs to made carefully.

There's a point when a collection branches out too much. Stick to what you have nostalgia for and are going play. If you've no history, no nostalgia or feelings for a game then it's shelf filler regardless of how rare it is. Every system has rare games, but rarity doesn't mean that you have to buy it just 'cause it's rare.
I was collecting PS2 and PS3 games and all of the PS systems, but then I eventually realized I'm buying out of compulsion. Yes I'm old enough that I seen the PS1 release as new. However Sega consoles were my earliest childhood. So I got rid of every PS console, every game and got myself together a Sega collection I actively play and love.
Collections should enrich your life - not be an oppressive space hog that forces you to make choices on other home things.
