I've been a DE shaver for a few years now, but I will never get rid of my Mach 3 . I've had the same handle for 15-20 years. Every now and then, I get out the Mach 3 and go down memory lane ... part of my story

I used the Mach 3 all my life and I thought it's the best razor. That is until I discovered the double edge wonderful world. It really is the difference between night and day for me. I hated shaving and couldn't shave more than once a week. Now I shave every 2 or 3 days and I'm enjoying every second of it. I know it's the cliche statement but it really is the truth.

To be fair, as a collector of electric, cartridge, double edge and straight razors, I’d agree that the Mach 3 is the pinnacle of cartridge razor shaving. The Fusion is, in my opinion, notably inferior to the Mach 3.

I remember when the Mach 3 came out. I was using the Gillette Sensor before that, I think. I thought it was the greatest thing. Three blades instead of two. Then the four blade razor came out, and the blades were so close together, it was really hard to rinse off. I stuck with the Mach 3, and was very reluctant to try the 5 blade fusion, but finally did. It wasn't a bad shave, rinsed off better, but was like shaving with a 2x6 turned sideways. Then later it had a single blade on top so you could get under the nose. In 2012 I walked into a store at the St. Louis Galleria mall, called "The Art of Shaving". Bought my first DE razor, a Merkur Futura. The salesman said "you'll become a better shaver". And it went from there. So much more fun than a Mach 3 razor and a handful of Barbasol. I do still have a Mach 3 though.

I thought Mach 3 was terrible when it came out. The Sensor Excel was the best razor they made; easy to get a BBS shave with it. I could never get a BBS shave with a Mach 3. Gillette lost me with that one.

That’s funny. Imagine if your parents bought you BIC as your first razor and you’ve only used DSC, Amazon cartridges…..and you are only finding out how good Gillette is now…..that’s where I’m at. 😂😂😂consider that if you’ve had Gillette from the beginning you have always been shaving in luxury. Not everyone has the money or can justify buying their kid Gillette.

The Mach 3 came out in 98. In the late 80s there was the Atra and in 89/90 the Sensor. Then in 94/95 the Sensor Excel.

The Mach 3 takes me back to the dark ages of wet shaving where the only thing I remember is nicks and how difficult cartridges were to clean due to stubble getting caught in the blades.

  • @dualityofman1253
    @dualityofman1253 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I rarely get razor burn or nicks when shaving with my Mach 3. I shave pretty fast too and do at least 2 passes. Also, most razors are going to tug if you're not a daily shaver. Use pre-shave oil and a good quality shaving cream and you'll be fine.

    • @jeremyrichey4243
      @jeremyrichey4243 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, I usually dry shave in the morning with the Mach 3, or right after I get out of the shower. It's a great cartridge for a quick quality shave. The Mach 3 shaves WAY better than any 5 bladed razor I've ever used. They always get gummed up. A little pressure on the top of the cartridge stops the tugging feeling he was talking about in the video. It just needs some support. That said, I'm pretty sure Gillette could make them last longer, which is the reason I'm looking into alternatives. Tired of buying another cartridge every week and a half to two weeks.

  • @buddhamack1491

Very similar story of my path into double edge shaving. There was nothing really bad about the mach 3 razor. But as my beard hair became courser as I got older I was noticing more shaving rash. I also got sick of how expensive the cartridges had become. I spent a year just using a beard trimmer with very short stubble to avoid having to shave.
I then stumbled upon this channel and found my saving grace in the double edge razor. I've converted a number of people since too.

Excellent comparison and review! My Dad had already switched to the Gillette Track II when he taught me how to shave when I was young, so that’s all I knew. My friends dad taught and bought him a Superspeed. Amazing how both styles of shaving were going on at he same time in the 70’s and 80’s. I am so glad I discovered wet shaving now! How Cool is it that I am shaving with Gillette razors that are older that me, and I am 58 years old! And I agree, it’s FUN!

Matt Danko, At 59 I have some similar memories. Except while my dad had already switched to the twin blade he handed his old Slim down to me for my first razor. Eventually I had to switch to a multiblade when it became too difficult to find DE blades. I was so glad to see DE razors make a comeback. Add to that all the great products!

I still have the Mach 3 Gillette sent me when I turned 18. It's all I used for 20 years, but I could never shave more than twice a week or I would break out. Now I shave everyday with my DE razors. It's my favorite part of my morning. My wife loves both the soaps and my cleanly shaved face. She even switched and now alternates between a Parker 66R and a Slim Adjustable.

Same story for me Matt. DE works for me. No more irritation or ingrown after some practice. I love the Gillette adjustable razors because I also dial down for more sensitive areas. I am also a blade buffer. When I travel I use Mach 3 because of TSA ban on DE blades.
Another point is that this is ideal conditions for the Mach 3. The blade is brand new. I find that my vintage Gillette’s blow by cartridge razors on second and third shaves. Cartridges dull and clog super easily. This results in even more irritation. Also, as Matt mentioned, de blades are cheap and I don’t hesitate to toss and change for a new blade. It means that my thick curly whiskers always get cut with a sharp blade. YMMV.

Funny thing about wet shaving. It forces you to learn how to shave correctly.
Once you know how to wet shave properly, you go back to a regular razor and can apply the very same techniques and still get a baby smooth shave.
If you do the right prep, brush on a good lather, pull the skin, and regularly rinse your razor, you can really get quite a good 3-pass shave from even one of those crumby 2 blade disposable razors.

Used Sensors and Atras until I got into my mid 40s and my beard started to be to tough for them.
I received a free Mach 3 in the mailbox but did not like the bigger head and extra tugging. You should try an Atra vs Mach 3 test, I think you’d prefer double over triple blade cartridges.

I'm an older gentleman that got back into wet shaving last year. When I was cart shaving, I used a Mach 3 or Sensor excel, I refused to use more than 3 blades. As I got older, my skin got more sensitive, maybe due to medications, so I changed back to DE razors and now get very little, if any, irritation.

My mach 3 "tugs" too & if I'm in a hurry it is painful.
Every time I go to buy replacements, the price angers me.
Realized I now go days unshaven due to these.
in the 70s & 80s, used electrics in my youth Norelcos & Remingtons but as they wore out became more obsolete, the replacements bit & pulled. By the turn of the century I gave up & switched to disposable Shicks but the replacements disappeared & now on to Mach 3s.
So on this rainy evening, am recalling borrowing Dad's old Gillette DE long ago [he has now switched back to his DE Gillette].
Had forgotten the diffs of the old DE razors. After seeing these eBay prices [sticker shock] of the old used Gillettes, now I am stuck. Not sure what I can find. This vid reminded me why I wanted an adjustable DE though.
    Good info Thanks!

Look at the first advertisements for multiblade razors by Gillette. They said that the first blade “pulls” the whisker out so that the subsequent blade(s) can cut it close. So that tugging was always part of the plan. I don’t like it either.

For disposable razors the best I've tried is gillette blue 3. It shaves similar if not smoother to safety razor, but it is less comfortable on 2nd and 3rd passes than the safety razor. I'm not sure if blue 3 is available on the US market, but it is definitely available in Europe The main difference between this and other cartridge/disposable blades is the greater spacing between the blades. There is still some tucking, but definitely better than mach 3 and fusion 5

This might get some hate but I've been collecting, selling and using de razors for near 10 years now and I grew up using all sorts of cartridge razors. De razors are kind of a rabbit whole, get one vintage gillette and hear another one's the one to rule them all lol and so on. Cartridge razors were just super available at the time. I have say to this day the mach 3 may be the pinnacle of wet shaving, especially when it comes to the cartridge razor. It seems to be just right and provides a very quick, close, and comfortable shave for the majority of people. Gillette can't do better than the mach 3 and nor can any of their competitors, which I believe is why we are seeing more and more gimmicks. There's not much else you can do when the pinnacle has already been reached.

So far I still have a lot of irritation, but it is getter better. My neck has a weird grain so going with the grain is quite tricky. I also started from least sharp to sharpest blades, but my hair is quite coarse I think.

Mach 3 is decent. But all multi blade razors will tug on me and give me bad razor burn on my jaw line (I think I am just really aggressive in that area to get that BBS shave). Ever since I started using a DE a couple years ago, I get no tugging. It may be because of it being a single blade, or that the sharpness of the blades I use could contribute to that. While a multiblade Mach 3 is a faster shave for me, I enjoy a DE much better - it is a very satisfying shave to me. Not saying that using a cartridge is wrong - everyone has there preference. I use a Rockwell T2 with either an Astra Green or Personna Comfort Coated blades on a 4 and 3 settings on the T2. While the upfront cost of a safety razor can be costly, there are alot of good safety razors out there. I started out with the 6C but went ot the T2 as the switching of the plates in the 6C became annoying. Adjustability is a great feature IMO.

I have a sensitive skin and the biggest difference was on the next day. After going against the grain with cartridge it caused so much ingrown hairs and bumps. The fusion is the worst. It's tugging, clogging easily, gets dull faster and cost more money. For me choice is easy - DE razor with brush lather, alternatively mach 3, but never against the grain :)

I think of DE shaving as a spa for your face. The ritual is relaxing and taking a break from our hurried modern life. I very much enjoy widening my experience with it, by trying different razors, blades, pre-shave and post-shave products, in pursuit of that perfect shave.

Nice video, Matt. I use a Mach 3 at 5am, when in a hurry. It does have that tugging feel, which I don’t like. But then I use a fat handle tech when I have more time. Would love to try the Slim, especially on my neck.

Matt, your sincerity shines through. You certainly come across as more of a scientist than a salesman. Mach 3 is arguably the best cartridge razor, including its disposable model. The best DE blades , i.e. Feather and Merkur, not cheap though. One can get a lot more shaves from the Mach 3. As always. very objective and historically informative video. Thanks for uploading.

Matt, I enjoy your passion around shaving and genuine reviews on razors. It's mainly through you that I have a Gillette Slim on the way. Hated blade shaving for years, electric never fantastic. So looking forward to perfecting the technique. Many thanks, best wishes. Love the T shirt design and colours, by the way.

If one is going to use a multi-blade cartridge, how about Gillette's Trac II from the '70s, which Gillette still manufactures in India, and is available (relatively inexpensively) on E-Bay (and probably Amazon). It has the advantage of NOT having a pivoting head, and thus both blades contact the beard better, more like a DE razor.

I've used a variant of the Mach 3 (Mach 3 Turbo) for around 15 years.I think it was a pretty "recent" model when I bought mine, and I've managed to get pretty good results with it. It is not the most gentle blade out there (it definitely tugs a bit), but in my opinion it is good for what it is. I always get compliments on my shave, so I think it gets the job done rather well.
But that's a bit of the thing. With disposable razors that's all you get; there's nothing out of the ordinary or truly enjoyable about them no matter how much they try to overcomplicate the blades. I enjoy shaving in general, but disposable razors rarely go a hair beyond "just getting the job done". So, for the last two months or so I've been looking into improving my shaving experience, researching my options, and doing some small purchases (a proper shaving soap, a good brush, etc). I'm definitely making the jump to safety razors (and possibly straight razors if I manage to tame them) next.
I'd love to get a Gillette adjustable, but I've heard that when it comes to your first safety razor, a non-adjustable is better starting point. Not sure how much truth there is on that, but since I still haven't decided which safety razor to buy I'd love to get some suggestions.
(A t-shirt would also be nice of course, but I guess I'm a bit too late for that ).

I'd used only a Mach 3 since I first started shaving 25 years ago. It never really bothered me, although it would if I shaved every day. I've been trying to get into DE shaving because I'm cheap. 😁
It's been a little challenging, though, as I'm still trying to get the technique so I don't cut my face up or leave large patches of stubble, so we'll see.

I still use the Mach 3 and like it better than Fusion or Harry's. Damn good shave. By far the best Gilette multiblade. I apply very little pressure. Once my supply of blades is depleted, I will give DE a try. That said, I have almost never been nicked or cut in 20 years. Hopefully, that will not change when I go DE. The Mach 3 swivel head is money on the chin which you do not shave. It is my area of concern regarding DE. As to cost, about $1.70 in bulk at BJ's. A lot compared to DE but not bad overall.

Since then, started using a DE - started with DE89, since then added a Merkur 34C, a Henson Medium, and best of all, a restored vintage Gillette SS from Razor Emporium. I love them all, especially the SS. I also use a cartridge from time to time but it is the Gillette Skinguard which is the best cartridge I have used and I have been shaving for decades.

    • @opinionator3884
      @opinionator3884 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Note, when using a Mach 3, you need to press more than you do for a DE. If you don't, it is uncomfortable. I notice it when I first switch back to a Mach 3 or Skinguard, usually when traveling.

Can't agree with you more Matthew, the Mach 3 is a much better cartridge than the fusion. I had used it a lot during my college days. It has less hairs stuck inbetween them when cleaning when compared to the fusion. The hairs getting stuck in between the blades was the only reason I changed to double edge. Now I'm using a Pearl butterfly razor and have not gone back to the Mach 3. Please do review Pearl razors in your future videos.

so the question is...while the mach3 may not be bad now, are you going to develop ingrowns later? that goes beyond construction, price, quality of initial shave. If it gives you ingrowns and problems after the fact, its a straight pile of trash. Thats like using a laundry detergent that gives you a rash.

Just asking for clarification. From your review of the Fatboy vs Slim, you mentioned that the Slim is a bit better. Yet when you mention of the Slim vs Mach 3, the shave was comparable. Then another video of Fatboy vs Fusion 5 where the Fatboy wins the Fusion 5. So is it saying that the Mach 3 is better than the Fusion 5 since it is comparable to the Slim? Is the Slim still better than the Fatboy?

I have extremely coarse facial hair. A cartridge razor (brand new) will hang on my chin or under my nose. I also have very sensitive skin. To me, shaving with the cartridge was a fortune cookie of misery - or an evil Forrest Gump box of chocolates: I never knew what I would get, but it was never good. Technique, etc., doesn't matter. One day I was just red and uncomfortable, another I would look like I lost a fight with a belt sander. Toss a coin, no rhyme or reason. With a double edge, or now a straight razor, yes there is a learning curve BUT it is NOT at all a steep one, and also, if I do it right, the result reflects that. I will take that any day in any field - knowing that if I do something right, I get to control the outcome, or quality thereof. Plus, yes, I honestly just find it much, much more enjoyable on a variety of levels.

The reason they are called double-edged razors is because they have two edges, why do you only use one edge before rinsing? When I first started shaving (many years ago) I used a Gillette DE razor along with Wilkinson Sword blades until I moved onto the Gillette Mach 3 and later the Fusion, both of which I was happy with. Then, about 3 years ago when I needed new cartridges, I saw the price difference between Sainsbury's own brand DE blades (10 for £2.50) and 8 Fusion cartridges (£20), and suddenly remembered I still have my old razor and at least one blade left. I duly went home, put in the one remaining blade, and discovered that you get just as good a shave. I've never used the Fusion since, and have just invested in a Merkur Futur, probably the last razor I will need to buy (the old Gillette was losing some of it's chrome). Also, DE blades last longer than a cartridge….So, for anyone watching this who still believes that new technology must be better than old, go out and buy a new DE razor and some blades FOR LESS THAN THE PRICE OF 8 FUSION CARTRIDGES, and discover that the hype isn't always true. For me, shaving is now something to look forward to, and not just something that needs doing every two or three days.
