Steve Lukather was/is a top studio guitarist in LA. The original band was made up of LA studio musicians who wanted to play live together. For reference, Lukather played on Michael Jackson’s Thriller album and currently has released an album, is touring with Ringo Starr’s All Star band as well as Toto. He’s a busy dude and one of the best guitarists out there. And a very interesting guy

This was a great version! Toto never disappoints. You have to check out the version with Bobby Kimball. He is suffering from a form of dementia. There is documentary coming out called Kite on a String about his life. There would be no Toto without Bobby. He is an incredible singer and musician.

True. However that doesn't remove that sadly Bobby's voice went about 20 years ago. Joseph is killing it... STILL

Great live performance. The only thing I like better about the studio version is that the lead singer could sing those high notes that were left to the female on stage.

Williams CAN sing these lines to this day , years on from the gig featured in this video. The only reason Jenny Douglas shared it with him on this tour is that she used to sing this one in an era not featuring Joseph.

These guys played on literally hundreds of records before and even after they formed Toto. In fact, they formed Toto after running into each other so many times at sessions and deciding they should start their own band. Plus, several of the guys all grew up together and went to the same high school in Van Nuys. I think you need to see the studio version to see how Bobby Kimball sang the original

Joseph Williams gets better and better every year! His father is the famous composer, conductor and pianist, John Williams. John has scored more than a hundred films, such as Superman, Star Wars and the Patriot; many of which were directed by Steven Spielberg. He has been nominated for more than 40 Oscars and has won five. If you want to hear a more current Joseph W. song, check out "Burn" (which Joe wrote) off their XlV album. These guys have performed on hundreds (Luke says thousands) of other artists albums and written music for other artists as well. Steve Porcaro (keyboards) wrote the song "Human Nature" that Michael Jackson had a hit with. New sub. 😎

It's always great to see and hear a song you know and love live of course. But if you are unfamiliar with a song or the history and your point is to get acquainted with the music of a different time, I always say listen to the actual studio recording that everyone bought or heard on the radio or that made it a hit in the first place. Then, once you know (and like) it, knock yourself out with the live versions. The only exception is when a live version was more popular or the one that actually charted and was played on the radio, such as Cheap Trick "I Want You To Want Me" and Paul McCartney "Maybe I'm Amazed".

    • @SweetThing

Bobby Kimbal's voice was made for high notes, he made it spectacular! but, Joseph Williams... his voice is exquisite, perhaps his timbre is not as high as Bobby's but the warmth, the tessitura, the color of Joseph's voice is great, Joseph gives elegance to Toto's songs . Of course and I clarify! It is my very personal opinion and the taste I have for Joseph Williams. He impacts me with his voice.

I went to see Toto play a small gig at the Whiskey or Roxy or something on Sunset Blvd. in the early 1990's and Bobby wasn't performing with them then either. They had the black woman do all the high parts that Bobby would hit on songs like this and "Africa". Kimball's high range was crazy.
