Everyone's favourite self-proclaimed Auto Expert John Cadogan strikes again with his as always highly entertaining DOOM AND GLOOM list of the Ultimate Lemon Cars of 2024 - that you apparently should never buy!
As educational and entertaining as I find John Cadogan's videos, I can't help but sense a level of hypocrisy and sensationalism that I wanted to react to and provide my own non-professional and certainly nowhere near auto expert level commentary!

🛑 Let me be very clear before you comment...👇
1. This is *NOT* a "let's bash JC" show. It's a "let's set the record straight on some unnecessary drama and sensationalism of events that are not that bad".
2. I do respect John. He takes it too far, but that is why many people watch him. Hell, even I do, so he's doing something right (and something wrong too).
3. Please don't forget the community guidelines of my channel. No racist or borderline racist comments.
4. Country mentions (e.g. China, Russia, etc) and references are fine - I do that myself - but I never encouraged anyone to start mocking JC here.
5. It's just a bit of a laugh show, and a reminder that not everything that's not Japanese-made is bad.
We clear? Cool, let's hear what you have to say... 😉
John a self claimed auto expert but hates criticism.
No one likes criticism, I guess, but we all have to expect that it's coming our way more often than not
2020 mg3, does what it is supposed to do, provide cheap transportation, no issues yet. 2021 Jolion Ultimate, very smooth lovely to drive.. we just turn off all the assists full time and we turn of lane assist. which we would do with any brand chinese or not. no problems and a nice ride. 2021 LDV T60. might need the gearbox update, sometimes clunks when you pull up. A little noisy and I did get an IDrive to make it work better. Service coming soon so will get the updates. I ceramic coat it and protect that ceramic with suitable Bowdens products so doesn't seem to be any rust problems and this is on outside car 24/7. Never been on the beach but when i do use 4wd, I get under it with a gerni at the next wash so happy enough with the LDV as well, no worse than a ranger and it's problems.
I think Chinese cheaper vehicles come at a cost. Less polish, cheaper materials. But most of what we use them for - AND the price discount we get upfront by not buying an overpriced Toyotas etc - is all fine and fit for purpose. Unless we're talking about Chery, as I honestly have no idea what they were thinking with that plastic creaky toy.
Dimitri you are a legend i have beer or vodka waiting for you in Perth........
Thanks mate, I don't drink vodka and they kicked me out of the country for a reason! 🤷♀️🤣
@@ValueCarsAU
beer then! i have a polish back ground,i was born in that country.....my currency is beer now days lol
My Haval H6 Hybrid is doing well at 25,000km 9 months. It would be awesome if AWD and better suspension but the price comfort and utility value is great. Reliability seems good and no issues so far with support.
reliability must be great as I'm starting to see quite a few Havel hybrid used as taxis and uber prestige
I wouldn't expect any less from GWM. The Russian channel disassembling those cars suggests that electricals might start causing issues if they rot/rust/whatever under worse weather conditions after 5 years. That's pretty good deal in my view still.
@@robertceroli3512it gets great economy,. Unlimited km and 7yr warranty, makes sense for a Taxi.
I had an issue with a new GWM Haval H6 but they corrected it under warranty without any hassle and all is well now.
The dealer service center were fuct, but that's a different story.
Yeah it always comes down to individuals who run the local show - wherever you are... It's not always on the brand. The local little "kings" who make it, or break it.
I remember he bashed my Dodge Caravan in a video. Cheap garbage he said or something to that effect.
I've had it 9 years now and not one issue other than maintenance. Aside from the transmission which works, but is absolutely godawful at shifting. But it's a van, so as long as it moves, Im happy. Honestly one of the best vehicles I have owned and I plan on keeping it to the end.
Thank you for sharing your experience - I find these comments most helpful, to be honest.
I have 2 problems with the LDV ute.
One is that a judge in an Australian court found the vehicle in question to be of poor quality.
The other is that it's 15mm too long to fit in my garage and still shut the roller door, so it's not really for me anyway😊
I would certainly have no problem with a slightly shorter Chinese made vehicle.
Fair enough mate. I suspect (and can see myself) that LDV is cutting corners and making their vehicles more bare-bones than other brands. But they are far from being just as crap as some Aussie judge made those out to be according to their unknown automotive expertise, and no I can't be bothered fact-checking everything myself. I just know that LDV sells and is driven by the hardest Van drivers - delivery people. If they drive LDV, it tells me this shit is good enough.
There is an aussie youtuber called Mike James who tells his story of rust with his LDV ute. After a bit of back and forth, he gets his money back from LDV under warranty and buts another LDV. It's worthwhile checking it out.
So we have 2 cases out of all those vehicles sold? Awesome, case closed!
I am currently looking for my next car. thanks John helping me narrow down the list. I believe that John must has done some research on the internet or watch some videos from other youtubers). However, I think the final list provided by john can only be treated as a draft list as I do not think he has, by himself, continuously test drove the variety of cars from the makers on the list. For the Chinese cars, there are much more detailed testing videos available, such as off-road tests, over 7000KM or three-month long-term tests, fuel consumptions under full or empty battery conditions for hybrid cars and disassemble analysis by different groups or freelancers. A lot Chinese car video makers will actually buy the cars for long-term test and then resell them as used-cars. But unfortunately, they all are in Chinese without English subtitle. I have to say, nowadays, cars makers in China update their models so frequently. There are too many options on their market and the competition is so intense. GWM Tank 500 for example, after the first launch of Tank 500 Hi4-T in June 2023, they now have an new version of Tank 500 Hi4-T backed by a different engine and a new infotainment system.
John is educated, no doubt about that, but highly biased, categorical, black and white in his judgment, and that's his brand on TH-cam. That's why some people love him and some hate him. He's polarizing.
John needs better non clickbait thumbnails. Don’t listen to him.
Lol but that's what gets him the views! He cracked the YT algorithm formula, which I obviously still suck at! 🤣
Hey Dimitri you are spot on about jeep putting their prices up substantially.I used to own a jeep which I bought new but looking at them now which I did recently they are way overpriced which scared me off as a buyer.I still like Jeep’s but there are better alternatives for cheaper these days .JC has missed the mark with this comment and many others also .
I'd buy another one for 50k as I bought mine before this mad price hike started. No chance now. 😞
The Rigby case was all about an LDV Ute that rusted out within a couple of years of ownership. Sure buy an LDV if you park away from the beach, but they’ll rust out if you live on the coast. Cheap Chinese steel used in them.
My question is simple. Where is the class action lawsuit for all those numerous LDV G10 vans our tradies are running into the ground left and right? SURELY if it was so crap - there would be more than one Tim Rigby? 🤷♀️
I can tell you every car brand has their own issues and there are always some bad complains from consumers!!
Exactly my point
Don't know if you have Foton Tunland ute over there, made in China, had for three years, 98,000 kilometers, a very good ute, only got ride of it as it only had 2500 kg tow rating and needed 3000 kg,
Never heard of it, but you're making a great point - yes, there is a lot of lower quality rubbish (sadly) coming out of China and (sadly) the most recent example of it is what Chery brought to our AU market. But there are also plenty of rock solid builds by the other brands that will last maybe if not as long as Toyota, then certainly LONGER than a lot of other established brands, say, Ford...
Dimitri your video is refreshing. I unsubscribed from JC because he is not objective.
He admitted to owning a Hyundai Santa Fe and used it in his driveway torture test. Trying to disprove that DCTs are bad. The test was a joke. He didn't plug in anything or use an IR gun to substantiate that the transmission didn't heat up. He sniffed it under the bonnet!
He also drives or drove a Triton so Mitsubishi tend to get leeway too.
You are refreshingly objective.
I drive a BYD Atto 3 and love it JC said don't buy. I had consecutive Fiat Scudo vans for 5 years each only one different fault on each and both fixed under warranty. Our 2nd car is a VW Passat 132 Comfortline which JC hates too.
He once said 'hybrids will never get traction in sales' wrong. He bags EVs generally but sung praises to the free loaned Hyundai Kona he got 12 months free motoring from.
I will take a BYD EV over Hyundai anyday for quality and value.
John is a very interesting and successful content creator. His trick is click baiting with scandalous, provocative titles. He openly said once that all he cares about are clicks, not objectivity or pleasing you and I... He clearly is doing something right, given his number of followers.
JC is a journalist, it obvious his opinions shouldn't take it too seriously.
JC is a paid puppet
Most other outlets are also journalists, yet people react to them. And what made you think we take JC too seriously around here? 🤷♀️
@@ValueCarsAU i ask questions he never responds,jc is a puppet !
John gives his cars more exercise than himself. Looking old and sick.
Well said👍
I good part of JC's content is nonfactual, but why let the truth get in the way of a good story...
Sadly, if you read the comments, most of his followers appear to be not capable of "thinking" for themselves, or in JC-terms, the collective intellect is "running on empty".
I try and not judge people as that road doesn't end anywhere good, but I too do wonder more often than not - what are those people thinking? Like, even here, there's always some idiot who thinks I owe them my opinion on Ukraine... Like, give me a fken break guys...
Good to hear some alternative viewpoints
I think so too! It's healthy.
Also, I see you did a spreadsheet for me... 😂
you're welcome
Well I believe to some extent you're are both incorrect. A simple test drive or drive over an extended period of a month or so, reveals little about it's "Whole of Life" experience or costs. Having managed fleets of 3,000 vehicles (including trucks), a "Whole of Life" analysis where purchase price, fuel & maintenance costs and resale value at the end are ALL considered would reveal currently, significant bias to Japanese and Korean vehicles. To pass ANY judgement about the Chinese, is simply Too Early with insufficient information available. In essence I endorse John's comments whilst also stating more information over a longer period is necessary to draw real meaningful conclusions.
Isn't it great that we all can believe whatever we want? 🤷♀️🤣
Hi Dimitri, you are a legend. John is an unhappy chap. Keep up the great work!
Thanks mate
JC will near eat Chow Mien but he doesn't knock back pies.😅
I'm personally more careful with direct racial references, but I get that you're joking
I have this friend that does the same thing John does but with people. Mostly Annoying but sometimes hilarious
lol we have that one friend who does exactly that
I recently visited Moldova, Russian is my favourite language, lovely to hear😅.
Great to hear, hope you enjoyed your visit
The "I owned a Jeep Fallacy"... my dude, you owning ONE Jeep does not make a statistic. What the fallout is from thousands of Jeeps sold and owned is what makes a statistic. So your personal experience is literally irrelavant. You being lucky does not mean that Jeeps on the whole are great cars. Why did I have to point this out?
Why did you have to point it out? Probably because you're a white knight looking to poke holes in otherwise pretty transparent as to *WHY* narrative. That's probably why? 🤷♀️
@@ValueCarsAU Your comment literally makes no sense at all. A "white knight" comes to the rescue of something - but I did not come to the rescue of Jeep, I also clearly did not white knight Cadogan - I mentioned Jeep four times and Cadogan not at all - this was clearly about YOU drawing wrong general conclusions from personal experiencei. There are a million Jeeps, they are generally known to be crap - you having been lucky with an example without issues does not make all the pervasive Jeep problems disappear. How are you gonna get around that? Duh...
Do you not see the old Cadogan videos on TH-cam he did for all the motoring magazines and TV stations before he allegedly "saw the light" and became the crying game of automotive excellence you see now? Honestly? I wouldn't even waste my time giving him any credibility as he simply has none. Subscribed!@@ValueCarsAU
John is a naughty little enraged budgerigar.
The mob love to set upon a particular brand. Then it travels like a contagion on the air, like a shrieking Trump rally. I love my Wrangler. Also like Toyotas. Great vehicles. No trouble. But i love the Wrangler. Great video. The voice of sanity.
That's a fresh way of putting very similar thoughts out there mate, you should comment more often! 😉
John cadogan is anti EV as well.
yeah and for a good reason! (he always takes it too far but that's just his thing...)
Some say John Cadogan is a paid Kia Hyundai propagandist. He once also did that for Subaru. The guy is not a motor journo. He stands in front of a fake workshop and is rarely or ever seen behind the wheel of anything. He most likely can't drive or has an invalid parking permit. Guess what Kia and Hyundai are losing market share to Chinese brands so they pay him to do the disparagement.
As a person who is a private car owner and a channel host "on the other side of the fence" to John, I can tell you - brands don't pay you, at least not often (well, not in my case anyway). But even given John's popularity, I still would give him a professional benefit of the doubt and not accuse him for being straight-out paid. What he does though is capitalise on a certain content presentation "scandalous sensationalism" formula. Which is what we're having a bit of a friendly giggle about here.
@@ValueCarsAUHe has been overtly spruiking Hyundai, Kia (and now Genesis) and a couple of Japanese makes for over a decade while selectively disparaging the competition. You don't do that unless there is good incentive. If he does get paid, it would be through a third party and not directly from Hyundai motors HQ that's for sure. BTW, I doubt he drives (if he can drive at all) a Hyundai.
Is that you NostraDaCadogan??????? Yes it is you cheeky monkey! @@nostradamus2642
You might not like John, but he wrote (and presented, video below) for wheels magazine, newspapers, TV before he went freelance. His channel is more than just car reviews, it's entertainment, with different segments giving his views on various car related topics and a funnel for his car brokerage service. Propagandist? Perhaps highly opinionated. I don't agree with everything he says, but he is a witty and eloquent wordsmith. Crass? Yeah. A motoring journo (who can actually drive), nonetheless.
th-cam.com/video/v2zZasPcqhk/w-d-xo.html
Aren't 1/2 of the latest iPhones made in India and Vietnam not China? Jonn Cadogans story has 276 K views ,so your 3 K can't compete with him .Good luck.
I'm not trying to compete with him, but thanks for your click and helping algorithm with your dumb ass comment.
My pleasure ! Good Luck.
Followed John for years. But ..The click bait thumbnail about The New Defender which was not even talked about was seriously unproffressional. I unsubscribed..
John is a successful business venture, he does whatever gives him more clicks I guess, but it's for us to choose - if we consume it or not
He does not punch bmw. Jeep sails are down. All over the world
Nice nit picking, carry on!
@ValueCarsAU , BMW is the only German brand, John Cadogan has complimented. Especially for their customer service support. Jeeps, Dodge sales are very much down. Just check the current situation. They tried to lift the brand into the luxery sector and now are in trouble. 100000usd for ram truck or 80000usd for a Gladiator? Noone buys. And to say jeep is reliable shows what specialist you are. Just your choice of cars says enough. If that is where your pain is, well, just learn from your mistakes and buy reliable cars. I'm not nit picking, I'm commenting on the lies in your video. Plus your russian accent you try to cover bei g bigger Christian than the Pope, makes you even more disgusting
can't stand John, had to block youtube recommending him
I find him occasionally amusing, but i'm unsubbed from his channel
@@ValueCarsAU he always speaks like he's constipated
The Japanese make the best quality products bar none.
If you say so lol
@@ValueCarsAU have you been to Japan?
Ur a funny guy, nothing to do with politics but some of those European brands are just crap and jeep as well, there is a reason why Toyota is number one! Coz that shit lasts!
Sure, Toyota lasts, so do many other brands. I don't argue that some of those European brands like Citroen or even Ford are crap. Doesn't make everything other than Toyota crap though, does it?
@@ValueCarsAU No definitely not! but I have owned a lot of them and still have 6 of them in our family just get in and turn the key and go that's what I like about Toyotas, I am the one who services them as well, and like the saying goes if your on to a good thing stick to it, always the last to get the bells and whistles granted but I guess that's the trade off with reliability.
