I had this lens ages ago, sold it after 6 months using, the AF was not spot on. Bought the Nikon 17-55 f2.8, so much faster and better quality. Great video, thanks snapchick!
Tamron lenses especially 24-70 f2.8 VC & 70-200 f2.8 VC are very well built , slightly below the Nikon & for a lot less. Happy with my Tamron , image quality superb.
Seems to be a great lens. I purchased the model with vibration compensation for about 100 dollars more. I really am impressed with it. So impressed that I bought Tamron's 70-200mm 2.8 with vc. Bang for buck they do stack up to Nikon's lenses at a third or half the price. Thank you for the videos!!!!
Just ordered my first DSLR!... A Pentax K50 with 18-135mm.... Haha nothing like the gear you review, but a big step up from my previous go to photography camera (Canon G12). Can't wait to learn about the different adjustments and terminologies
Hi there. Have you checked out the Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8? If yes, which one would you say is better? People seem to lean towards the Sigma in online reviews, probably because of OS and HSM I guess. I'm getting second hand deals on both for identical prices ($200).
Great review, comprehensive, especially when pointing out the pro and cons for why one should or not consider this lens for purchase. I only wish it was FX specific.
Kind of a major correction because she told a ton of people with cameras that need internal lens motors that they can't buy it. I still wouldn't recommend they buy it so she saved them money but she also just gave them incorrect information.
Alex DC Uhm no! I have the Nikon version and it has an internal focusing motor. I wish people did a minimum amount of research before they contributed their "$0.02" on the internet.
Have you shot any video with this lens? I'd like to get a new lens for my canon t2i to shoot my guitar videos. I need a lens that will give me some nice depth of field and is all around versatile.
Wait, wait! Surely it does have an inbuilt motor. And it's quite noisy - something to keep in mind if you do video. Have had it for five years now, I like the super quick focus, very sharp as well, especially at longer focal distances (25mm+) and at about f8+. Designed for apsc so there's no crop factor to keep in mind (eg, 17mm on this lens = 17mm in full frame equivalent).
WOW fml i just bought a 35mm prime cannon lens for like 40 bucks more than this T-T' and this lens does everything the prime lens does! im about to return my prime to get this. what do you think?
Lakeshow07 naw im actually keepin my 35mm prime lens just cause its still a great lens. i ended up getting a canon ef 10-18mm ultra wide angle at @ $299 off amazon cause i dont really need the 50mm, i just need the wide angle. it's a great lens for the price, and its got image stabilizer ! no vignetting at all! unlike alot of the other ultra wide angle lens around the same price range
I'm a Canon girl... And I love the Sigma 17-70 f2.8 which is really affordable and so versatile that it hardly ever leaves my camera body. Perfect travel lens I find. By the way I find your sound is somehow not as perfect as I. The past.... Different mic setting?
This lens has an awesome DXO rating better than any Nikon lens, and it can make Makro until 5cm with 50mm... There is no competition with Nikon because Nikon can't deliver this sharpness for these Zoom lens. As usual Nikon lenses are B.S. or overpriced. For instance, the front ring of my 18-140mm lens from Nikon dropped off after 3 months without any reason for that... All my other gears had not any problems, for many years... B.S. Nikon quality... Don't buy Nikon or Sigma lenses, you will regret it.
Hmmmmm, for a wannabe second wedding shooter would you recommend this lens or a 35mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8? The two primes add up to the same price as the Tamron.
TheSnapChick You might want to check the spec again - This lens has Internal Motor. TAMRON 17-50MM F/2.8 DI II SP VC (ASPHERICAL IF LD XR) IF - Internal Focusing (IF) System www.tamron-usa.com/lenses/prod/1750_diII_a016.php#ad-image-0 From www.tamron-usa.com/assets/pdfs/B005_1750vc.pdf --------- * When set on AF mode, interfering with the focusing ring may cause serious damage to the lens mechanism. -------
@Ben Reg This is a bit misinformative. There is a version that does have the internal motor, however what she has in her hand does not. So far there are 3 very similar Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lenses, the most modern of which you just referenced. The first iteration had screwdriver AF, the second had IF (or internal focusing, I think both have the same optics). The one you just referenced is the newest and has both IF and VC. (VC being image stabilization).
There is a version from Tamron with a focusing motor. I'd tell you what it is, but I don't know their system well enough to decode all of the abbreviations in the product names.
TheSnapChick I see only two versions on their web site. W/ and W/O VC. Both say "Nikon with Built-In Motor" under the specifications for the lens mounts supported.
TheSnapChick I think you are talking about the SP 17-50mm F/2.8 VC ( Model B006 ) . Off topic since you reviewing Third Party lens , if you can get your hands on Sigma 17-50mm f28 EX DC OS HSM , please do a video . It would be a great comparison of Third Party Lenses .
cheers have you looked as the sigma ex same range and as os F2.8 fixed but as a great review ?. BUT I think lens are not all the same, even though you would thinks so they vary individually . Price wise Tamrons are great. The bottom line is if you know what your doing you will almost get a great photo from a bucket with a hole in it. LOL well almost.More time using the stuff you will yield better results. why not get this lens if you can't take great pictures with it an upgrade is not likely to help. Cheers
I had this lens ages ago, sold it after 6 months using, the AF was not spot on. Bought the Nikon 17-55 f2.8, so much faster and better quality. Great video, thanks snapchick!
I'm so glad I found someone who talks about Nikon! Thanks! :)

Would you recommend this with Nikon d5600?
Do you know if this lens works with the ftz adapter?
Thank for this review, good of you to point out the problems with the compatibility.

Nice review, it helps a lot for me being a beginner photographer. You have a new subscriber!
Using it about a year or so. Great lens. The only downside is build quality. Everything else is just perfect for me.
Hi! does the build un motor of the Nikon d3300 work with theses lense?? Or will I have to manually focus?
Is this good for traveling
Btw, there is a nikon version of the same Tamron with a built in motor. (not the VC version)

Great vid I might try it
Great review, comprehensive, especially when pointing out the pro and cons for why one should or not consider this lens for purchase. I only wish it was FX specific.
Minor correction...this lens does have a build in focus motor. Still great review, subscribed!

Good review, thanks.

Good for video, but noisy if you want to autofocus in videos (which I don't do with DSLRs)
Thanks. Great youtube channel by the way.
Love to see a review on Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD for my
Nikon DX so I can hear your opinion ! I think it's my next lens .
Will this be okay for a Canon T3i?
They have a lens like this for canon mount
So which would you choose this one? or Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM? :)
could you use this for a canon efs camera?
Does this lens work on the Nikon D500
sweet stuff!

Adelaida123 there are different types
WOW fml
i just bought a 35mm prime cannon lens for like 40 bucks more than this T-T' and this lens does everything the prime lens does! im about to return my prime to get this. what do you think?
Andy Nguyen Did you end up getting the Tamron 17-50? I'm in the same boat lol
Lakeshow07 naw im actually keepin my 35mm prime lens just cause its still a great lens.

+Andy Nguyen oh yeah I kept mine 35 1.8g as well and bought the 17-50 2.8 non vc. So far very impressed with it.
I'm a Canon girl... And I love the Sigma 17-70 f2.8 which is really affordable and so versatile that it hardly ever leaves my camera body. Perfect travel lens I find.
By the way I find your sound is somehow not as perfect as I. The past.... Different mic setting?
Isn't the 17-70 a 2.8-4 max aperture? The tamron is fixed at 2.8.
ddnn3 I have the Sigma and it's 2.8-4. Nice lens.
ddnn3 check out the Sigma 17-50 F2.8

Rudi Zimmerer want to order one without built in motor as I heard these are the sharpest one(Japan made) only need to focus manually :) d3300 user
Hmmmmm, for a wannabe second wedding shooter would you recommend this lens or a 35mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8? The two primes add up to the same price as the Tamron.
Is this worth selling my 35mm 1.8?
+Lakeshow07 I hope you didn't sell it.
The 35 1.8 is a great lens especially with the large aperture.
Kapski NL I did because I switched to a full frame.
So does the sigma need a screw drive motor?
You are pretty!!!😁
TheSnapChick You might want to check the spec again - This lens has Internal Motor.
