    I love how MaCenna keeps saying "we did it guys" when we had nothing to do with it - SHE made those cabinet doors, all by herself. I am in awe of her talent, absolutely in awe. There is nothing that girl can't do. Thank you, MaCenna, for sharing your talents with all of us. Your time is recognized & appreciated!! 🥰

Not only are you inspiring so many woman and young DIYers in general to pursue their home renovation dreams, but you are also creating a legacy for your family.

    I'd add the detail 100%!! MaCenna, what I love about your videos is that despite having different styles our spirit and methodology is the same! We can not (and will not!) be stopped by what we do not yet know how to do. And we will do everything we can to reuse, salvage, scavenge, and make do without compromising vision or outcome. Get it, girl!! You're killing it and such an inspiration to GET TO WORK.

I would def. add the trim detail because it makes the kitchen feel more cohesive. Also love that you'll be using the brass knobs. It also made me kinda teary eyed thinking about you one day showing your kids how you built all of the things in the house.

      @NoRegrets. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kids that grow up with parents that can fix things or build things are never impressed until they are grown. They take it for granted. My kids knew i had basic skills repairing their bicycle or motorcycle or building shelves,repairing a piece of furniture. They always just expected me to do it without thinking about it. It did not occur to them that other mothers could not do these things. It never occurred to me that other fathers could not build a houseboat from scratch as my father did. It is going to be amazing for her grown children to see what their mother accomplished though through all these videos. I sincerely hope she keeps these safely backed up somewhere. (TH-cam won’t last forever)
      When you start having to do these things in your own home for your family you really appreciate the skills your parents have. I know MaCenna really appreciates her mothers art now and her fathers amazing metal working.

    You could cover the pocket holes with dowel plugs. The dowels are glued in and trimmed flush with a hand saw. Edit: be wary of making your doors too tall and wide. Max 27”W x max. 30”H. If the door you need is larger and not being used as a refrigerator panel. Consider adding a “center stile” or your door could warp over time. I’m guessing Texas can get pretty humid.

    We had 2 cabinet estimates when building our house and they were $18,000 from Home Depot and $13,000 from an Amish woodworker. I can’t even believe it can be this cost effective to do it on your own. You have given me so much inspiration when it comes to tackling things on my own! I’ve been cutting trim and replacing kitchen lighting like a pro! My husband tries to get me to hire people but I know for a fact this is something any strong woman can do! You were also the person to get me into thrift flipping furniture and now I have furnished my house for cheap with a custom look! Love love love you!

  • @centralWisconsin1
    @centralWisconsin1 ปีที่แล้ว +63

    -central Wisconsin: If you put masking tape over the wood before you cut it, if I recall, that will help reduce the fray cut edge when it’s done cutting.
    ….and great investigative work to figure all this out! That in itself is a HUGE Accomplishment!!! Good job Macenna!!!
    …..I’ve also shared this episode with my daughter, who is thinking about making her own new kitchen cabinet door fronts -to upgrade existing cabinets.

    At this point I don’t even know what to say!!!!! Whaaaaaaaaaaat?!! Gaaaa this is just the BEST home Reno DIY series ever. The real time learning of skills alone is so freaking inspiring to witness. Honestly, at this point I can totally picture a day when we witness you felling your own trees, milling them, pouring your own concrete slab, laying stone, doing all the plumbing and electrical, making your own windows ….. lol. And I’m only partially kidding 😅. And through it all you are so cheerful and calm and patient (yes, I know you have your moments, but also hardly at all) and teaching us all so much as you go. I like to learn how to do things myself, too, and sometimes it feels way too overwhelming but when I watch you figure out how to MAKE YOUR OWN CABINET DOORS!!!! I remember that where there is a will, there is a way. Shout out to the TH-camrs out there who are sharing their skill sets with all of us. It really does enrich the world and so many lives. And they look gorgeous!! The trim detail absolutely finishes them off perfectly. ❤

    I watched my dad take fuzzy bits off with his chisel and you can also use a hand plane. Chisel first back against the grain so it cuts it rather than breaking shards of wood off. My dad got a hand plane from his boss when he became a builder and my dad gave one to each of his apprentices when they qualified. I think you deserve a top quality hand plane cause you rock with wood working - I’m so impressed.

    MaCenna, you can never have too many clamps! Have y'all been to Harbor Freight? There's one in your area. They have tons of tools really cheap, and the clamps are a great deal with a lifetime guarantee!l Also, you can buy pre-made pocket hole plugs or get a jig that lets you cut your own out of any wood. And...with pine wood, the tear out (jaggedy edges) is often a factor because pine is so soft.

    You definitely have an engineers mind. You have the enthusiasm and the natural aptitude for this kind of work. It’s wonderful watching you develop your skills. And as we are all facinated with this house you have created, it’s great knowing that these new projects will add to it….

    Really pleased to see bare hands and safety glasses around spinning tools! ☺️
    Two more things that you might want to add to your new tool setup are a push stick and a feather board. The push stick is for, well, pushing 😉 It's so you aren't leaning forward and moving your hand past the blade.
    The featherboard is for pushing the wood hard up against the fence from the side so you aren't leaning towards the blade from that side. If the wood kicks back or catches and jumps up, or if you lose concentration or grip for a second, the wood will leave the scene and you are going to keep going toward the blade. If you can use less force and keep more space, you've got much more chance of not being damaged.

    Excellent Macenna! Trim makes a difference. The reason for the wood splinting is because pine wood is so soft. A harder wood wouldn’t have splintered. Very impressive skill work.

I built ikea bookshelves and dresser and a bunkbed for them. I know ikea’s not the same as from stray h but you gave me to confidence to do it! Thank you!!

    You should be impressed! You are so amazing Macenna!I dont think there is anything you cant do! I am just lovin everything you do in that cottage. Thank you for your encredibly positive attitude - and showing us that everything can be tried, thought thru and tested - and it works to! Here in Sweden we have Pippi Longstocking as a story we read to our children but we also have Lotta on Troublemakingstreet - by the same author! Lotta is a five year old girl who is encredibly smart, stubborn and resourceful! She states that "oh I have never done that before - of course i can do that!" I see a whole lot of Lotta in you!

    Very nicely done. 😍😍 I love carpentry and have seen many videos on renovating kitchens or flipping houses but nothing compares to this TRULY UNIQUE SERIES! 👏👏👏 I love the flow of your videos including the attention to detail and the broken down explanations mixed with both professional terminology and common language. I've done a few projects myself but I chose to take building a house off my bucket list bc of all the time and additional expenses including labor and certified contractors etc. I will do a tiny home or tree house instead (one day). However I am truly inspired to go for some big projects and feel more capable than ever seeing u tackle so much with fresh eyes and hella TENACITY !! THANK YOU 💕

    I find it so interesting that in addition to doing your research, you then work out the best way to make it work for your particular set of circumstances. Even the research takes time and the ability to select the proper teacher. There is quite a number of sloppy "how to's" with misinformation, missing steps, etc.
    I greatly admire your willingness to test, try and master new skills. The trim is definitely a YES; adds that extra finished and custom look.

    I'm in the middle of a renovation. Now cabinet shops are back ordered, or they are in no hurry to call you back. meanwhile, I saw your pocket hole cabinet making video. I thought, I can do this. Lots of videos, second guessing myself, tears, frustration, which has finally given way to success, accomplishment, a sense of pride, and much more. I actually made 6 drawers today. 6!!! They are straight and fit together correctly. I'm finally excited at what they will look like when they are finished! Oh, btw you could use pocket hole plugs to fill the pocket holes you don't want to see. Also, you can get a Dado blade for your table saw to cut the grooves in your pieces. I am making drawers, 3/4" sides and 1/2" bottoms. I got the dado blade for my new table saw, (having tools makes it so much easier to do a good job), and put the grooves in all the side pieces in a snap. It was so quick! It actually took longer to change the blade than to run my pieces through. Each new thing takes time to figure out and just like you said, you procrastinate when it's something new, you haven't done before. That's me, I do that exact thing too. You're just trying to figure it out and get confidence before you jump in... There's a lot to figure it out. It made me feel so much better when I saw you were still working on your kitchen too. It's real life and things take time, along with everything else that's also going on in a normal day. You are doing a great job and I'm sure I'm not the only one that's been inspired to try to build my own cabinets. Keep the details videos coming, lots of good ideas. 😊
