  • A tips session for postgraduate researchers beginning their courses at the University of Birmingham, UK, which features as part of the 2013 University Graduate School Induction Morning. After tips from each of the panel members the session is then opened up to questions from the floor. The questions are as follows:
Is it OK to ask for additional meetings with my supervisor if I feel they would be helpful?
How is a supervisor's role different for a MRes (Master of Research) student?
Is the supervisor/student relationship different for part-time and distance learners?
What support or guidance is there for preparing for a viva?
Is there such a thing as too much intervention from a supervisor?
Can stress be channelled into a positive thing?
The panel consisted of three postgraduate researchers and three supervisors. They are (from left to right) Simon Jenkins, Laura Cronin, Akash Beri, Dr Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay, Prof. Susan Hunston and the session is chaired by Prof. Gavin Schaffer.

Thanks for advices. I have just started my PhD in Norway and we are in lockdown for 2 weeks, Day 1 was digital and it went well though I feel like it will be much better when campus is open and meet other PhD candidates.

Most supervisors do not allow you to record and many speak in jargon and forget what it was like to be a student. Great video though, thanks for posting

I have a question : what if you are working on a field that your supervisor has nothing to do with it? What do you do in this case?

I wish they would stop all casually name-dropping and back-handedly mentioning "Labs" and "lab work"- NOT ALL PHD STUDENTS ARE SCIENTISTS!
