      Then you're in the wrong department. Why study somewhere they don't want to help you?

    • @DSScully

      @James Hayton because I was accepted by the university and it is the JOB of that department to do so.
      Especially for equitable access and equal rights for individuals with disabilities, which I am.
      The law was passed in 2008 to give individuals like myself who have intellectual or developmental disabilities equal access to higher education.
      That an institution would refuse is a violation of that law.
      There is NO justification for any department, regardless of WHOM is the student to refuse to facilitate the educational aspirations of that student.
      Your comment is ignorant and demonstrates how pervasive such shit and abusive attitude exists. And maybe you didn't understand that before commenting and did so without knowledge.
      But academic institutions are there to provide equal opportunity to all students. And refusing to do so violates the law.

    Interesting, helpful and slick, but . . . in my experience "writing up" even smaller reports is a highly non-linear process. It is useful to read through it from the point of view of one's audience from the beginning to the end, but it is completely idealistic to expect the writing process to follow this orderly path. You hit all kinds of snares, like having the fill gaps, having the adjust or abandon narratives, and reordering where the notes you've taken en route to the writing up point will go. This is normal. Don't be surprised if your mileage varies greatly from the approach recommended in the video.

    Totally spot on. It's about writing your thesis into a narrative with a beginning, middle and end. Writing is a skill and like anything else needs to be worked on. Make noted about papers you enjoyed reading or found easy to read and what they did you liked. Have confidence in yourself with what you write. It doesn't have to be perfect the first time round

    @JamesHayton This is a good presentation. I think your work/ lectures on this may really benefit with some PPS&Q concepts for the Introductory section? Otherwise, to new researchers, your language is rather abstract and conceptual. There’s a really easy way of focusing research questions and Introductory sections by formulating a one-page PPS&Q… have a look at the lectures on here. Incredibly simple and allows researchers to get on with focus rather than conceptual abstractions.

    There is probably one physicist (the speaker's own discipline) per hundred thousand published authors in the world. It's not the writing that's the most difficult. It's the creation of new knowledge.

    • @James_Hayton
      @James_Hayton  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sulagna Dasgupta I completely agree. In my writing courses I always tell people to prioritize the research and that that should be the hardest part. For me, writing was by far the easiest part, but a lot of students really struggle (even if they have amazing results). If writing is easy for you, that’s great!

    • @SulagnaDasgupta
      @SulagnaDasgupta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@James_Hayton Oh no nothing is easy for me as a grad student (I'm a grad student in Econ theory, which is really just applied math). But the math - finding the truth and then proving it to be true - is the part I find the hardest. Thank you so much for your response. I have a lot of respect for physicists (my mom is one). I already find the math involved in Econ theory to be quite hard. I can't imagine how hard it must be for PhD's in the hard sciences.

    I had to squeeze a thesis outline out of my mentors. Afterwards, I wrote my undergraduate thesis (36 pages in the summer). In the fall, my mentor and I edited it down to 25 pgs to apply for a PhD (I got in btw). Also through the entire process my other mentor told me to make a list of all the constructive criticism I received on each draft. It helped me so much to understand the common mistakes I made! Currently, I edit it myself when I see them.
    Now, I’ve been hired to TA for an English class and hired as a writing instructor (despite being a History major). Now I repeat my process with three classes of students and I hope - HOPE - it’s helpful during graduate school. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏾
