I've been doing metal roofing for 40. You never put screws in the top of the rib it goes beside of the rib on the flat part. Only the nails to go on top. Because the screws will pull the rib down too far. And it was split the rib if he too tight.
Thank you Wib for your comment. In this case the direction from the manufacturer and the vendor for installation said to put screws in the top of the rib. So I just followed there instructions. I also used the lifetime screws that they recommended. There installer is the one who showed me were and how to pre-dill the holes. The directions do state to be careful not to over tighten. I have done roof in the past that we’re screwed down on the flat part I want the warranty so I followed there directions
There are pros and cons to on top of the rib screws. In the Philippines virtually all manufacturers recommend on top of the rib placement while warning against overtightening. I have lived in homes with 40 years old steel roofing and they generally perform well with screws on top of ribs. We get extremely heavy rains and typhoons, so we went with the manufacturer‘s recommendation. We don’t want to experiment with a roof costing us thousands of dollars. I can see that there are good arguments to be made for both methods. We would probably need a different kind of screw to make in the valley screws workable here. The screws supplied by the manufacturer here are moderately corrosion resistant, but would probably corrode earlier if not placed on top of the rib.
My brother like you're from another planet... putting srews on the flat will you problems you really do not want follow the proper procedure...it will save you plenty in the long run... on top the ridge is where your screws goes...
I agree with the commenter below that most roofers recommend putting the screws on the flats and not the ribs. However, the exposed fastener supplier for Menards also states to place it in the ribs. I can't figure out why. On a side note, do you have a link to the screws/or can you tell me where you purchased them?
