The reason why Kazakhstan was the last to leave the USSR is because Nursultan Nazarbayev (the first president of Kazakhstan from 1991 to 2019) could become the next leader of the Soviet Union after Gorbachev. The Soviet elite wanted to see someone non-Slavic or even non-European as a leader because it could resolve conflicts between different ethnic groups and reduce national movements within the Soviet Union.
Just being pedantic here but: Stalin wasn't a Slav (Georgians are arguably European...I only say arguably because some people argue against it); Lenin was ethnically half-Asian; Yeltsin had visible Asian ancestry.
Yeah, but Lenin and Stalin were not the only men who ruled the Soviet Union. There were also Khrushchev (Russian, ruled from 1953 to 1964) Brezhnev (Russian, ruled from 1964 to 1982), Andropov (mostly Ukrainian, ruled from 1982 to 1984), Chernenko (mostly Ukrainian, ruled from 1984 to 1985). Yeltsin was a rival to Gorbachev and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. So as loyal and experienced state worker as Nazarbayev (who ruled the Kazakh SSR at that time) with typically proletarian past (he used to work at a metallurgical plant) was a perfect candidate for this role.
I'd say a slightly less unrealistic scenario is not only Kazakhstan but all of Central Asia stays in the USSR and after Russian pressure, they rebrand. Maybe they can come up with a deal of allowing a 6th seat at the security council
I think an interesting third version of this would be what if Kazakhstan claimed to be the Soviet Union and Russia backed them up on it as a way to get out of their debt or to distance themselves from the soviet union

For the former, the UK would rush to the negotiating table to save their territory and prepare for war by early 1941. Germany doesn't have to aid the Italians, and can start the invasion of the USSR earlier. The USSR would also mobilize their forces closer to the border, but this just means that they would what forces they had quicker. The Germans manage to take Moscow just before the invasion halts, and morale and the logistical importance of Moscow cause the USSR to be in a far weaker position. More resources that were used on the UK are also used in the USSR, and the US might join the war later due to the UK not actually fighting Germany in late 1941. The war would be a grind for the Germans, but they could take enough territory and enough of the USSR population that the USSR can't draft them, nor equip them due to less of an industrial base. Also, there are questions over if Iran would be invaded by the British if they refused to allow the supply of lend lease to the USSR through their borders depending on the peace treaty they sign with Germany. If Germany does manage to win WW2, they will either collapse in on itself due to its plunder-based economy and dealing with too much rebellion within its controlled territories, perhaps with the military couping the government to establish more friendly relations with the rest of the world and to limit German imperial ambitions to something more achievable. Japan might not surrender due to a lack of any fears of the USSR occupying them. This means a much more bloody Pacific campaign for America, with it having to extinguish not just the Japanese forces in Japan, but all throughout East Asia. The communists wouldn't control all of mainland China, but they could still have large enclaves scattered in the north and west. It would take a while for the KMT to consolidate control over the entirety of what we call China. Some parts of Russia not controlled by the Germans, like Kazakhstan, may gain independence from the USSR, but its a toss up on how much Siberia balkanizes. There would be no Cold War, and the Americas are likely more progressive due to a lack of a Cold War with the USSR that led to the redscare and Operation Condor. The European empires would be so much more broke, and Marshall plan aid being so much thinner, that colonialism ends quite a bit faster, and with less formalised agreements in favour of the former European Empires. America might return to a degree of, while not isolationism, non-interventionism outside of the Monroe doctrine. Global trade will, in contribution to this, also be much weaker in the long run as East Asia and especially Europe are much poorer. There is also the possibility that India isn't partitioned because the UK can't afford the resources to oversee the partition because they are still worrying about their military buildup to fight the Germans again.
@@Darkness-yn5us What else would it ripple into? Past territorial ambitions in MENA, what would make this scenario different to normal Axis victory scenarios, which, while unique, usually have some key notes for the key types of Axis victory scenarios? I guess one thing that could be added is that Italy is broken into more states because it is considered dangerous. Since some of the northern states/the northern state would likely be socialist, it could serve as an inspiration for other socialist movements.
I feel like Kazakhstan could have "declared independence" but stayed Communist under the "Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, not THE Soviet Union, nor a "successor state" but just a Communist Kazakhstan.
If whoever's in the Kazakh government is insane enough to keep claiming to be the Soviet Union despite the crippling debt and the imminent Russian invasion, they'd probably be insane enough to threaten Russia with the nukes they managed to take control of. How would the scenario play out then, assuming the whole diplomatic posturing between Russia and the world takes long enough for the Kazakhs to reverse engineer enough nukes to become a significant nthreat? Does Russia back down? If Russia attempts to call their bluff and the Kazakhs actually launch nukes, what's the world's response? I imagine probably global nuclear war, as the Russians are going to blame the west for the Kazakh insanity and the west will anticipate it, leading to both launching at eachother as well. There's also the tiny possibility that the Russians cannot go through with ending the world no matter how much they despise the west, especially if the Kazakhs only manage a few successful launches. Of course, Kazakhstan in going to become a glowing wasteland no matter the wider outcome.
ok unrelated, but despite being a great power the soviet union only having a debt of 65 billion even with lack of trading partners and sanctions is kind of insane! only like 3 percent debt to gdp ratio
Video Idea: The New Union Treaty is adopted and the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics is formed, and maybe go a step further where this new union remains in a state of continuing democratization. I think a timeline where such a state becomes less corrupt, more enticing for foreign investment, the state itself invests more in infrastructure/social services instead of military buildup, attains higher standards of living, better combats their population decline, its citizens gain more freedom, and possibly joins the EU is fascinating. Russia and the whole former union has massive resource, intellectual and economic potential and to see such assets be used on a liberalizing, modernizing nation would be so stark from our own timeline. It sometimes makes me sad to think of militaristic and aggressive dictatorships/autocracies that have so much to give themselves and the world if they focused on internal development and personal freedoms.
9:41 false… in the 1990 the red army was…. At all level as weak as Luxembourg. Just look the war in Grozny… 3 month to take a city who have only people with no tank, no plane to defend the city… imagine… take all the Kazakhstan 😅😅😅😅 ! Impossible ! And Russian don’t have a single dollar or roubles to invest in this war… Russia was just in a position who the can just said « ok but i’am angry… »
The real alt hist question for Kazakhstan though is What If the Northern River Reversal was actually done? i.e. soviets re-directing the Ob (using dams and canals) to the Aral Sea. Would it fill up the Aral? Maybe so much that the Aral even gets an outflow? Which would be into the Caspian. Thus making the Caspian Sea flood as well.
I did this exact scenario in a Model United Nations. I was the Soviet Union (Kazakhstan). The meeting was to diced if the USSR would keep its seat and vote in the UN Security Council, and to regain all Soviet property (military hardware) I tried playing all sides. To China I applied to a fellow communist nation and offered to be their puppet if they backed me in keeping my seat and vote. To the west, I told what was and is the current reality that the USSR (Kazakstan) cannot possibly pose a threat to the western liberal order, and Russia is more of a threat than the Soviet Kazakstan could ever hope to be. And that a nation opposed to Russian imperialism, would be a stronger with a seat and vote on the UNSC. Finally Russia, Russia was there at the meeting arguing that Kazakstan wasn’t the USSSR and was opposed to said my goals, and it was made clear that they would end up with a seat and vote on the council, but I was not opposed to that I was wanted to retain my own, I told Russia that I know that Kazakstan pretending to be the USSR and keeping its vote and seat in the UN and getting some former Soviet Property was not really in Russias interests but I told them that I would support them getting their own new seat and vote on the council to build up a triple alliance between Russia Kazakstan and China on the security council to combat the west. Tell everyone what they wanted to hear. Which was hard because we all were in the same room (school library). In the end, Russia got a seat and vote on the council while Kazakstan didn’t get a vote but got a permanent seat on the Council and recognized as the continuation of the USSR, and gaining some of its property back but not all. I would say that I won for the most part. Forgot all about embassies. And there were fears that I would invade Central Asia as to restore the Union. My Model UN club and I didn’t know about the debt, if we did I would try to use it to use it to convince Russia that I would take on the debt (never planning on paying it) in exchange for there support. I had a fun time with friends in high school in the end.
Actually, the fact that west considetanting that the cold war hadn't ended doesn't chage a lot our timeline. US already knew the cold war didn't ended on our timeline, as China was rising and a ✨democratic✨ Russia doesn't change the fact that they want influence over Europe. Not dissolving NATO and even expand it was already something chalenging Russia, bcs it means that Russia is considered as a threat (becouse it was made for defense against Russian expansionism, supposedly). Maybe Western Europe did considere the cold war over, but US and Russia didn't
*i collected some cool scenarios from r/possiblehistory* what if the arabs took constantinople? what if everything went perfect for japan in ww2? what if everything went perfect for albania? *and i also created my own* what if italy was the main player in ww2? what if hitler fled to argentina and took over the government? what if capitalist democrats rebelled instead of communists in russia? what if prc invaded taiwan and the roc stayed in hainan? what if russia stayed communist after the collpase of the ussr? what if russia went democratic and joined nato? what if ww1 was reenacted in ww2 (roleplaying like ww2&1 in modern day) what if russia got more of america? what if non-aligned movement won the cold war? what if napoleon went to italy after elba and built an empire there?

Since some of the northern states/the northern state would likely be socialist, it could serve as an inspiration for other socialist movements.
very nice
I feel like Kazakhstan could have "declared independence" but stayed Communist under the "Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, not THE Soviet Union, nor a "successor state" but just a Communist Kazakhstan.
Can you please make a part two? a EU + Russia vs. US + China + Soviet govt. in exile cold war 2 scenario seems genuinely interesting
I want those Teddy Roosevelt videos nowwww!! hahaha
I WAS INHALING LIKE AN WILD ANIMAL WHEN I READ KAZAKHSTAN.
Got my chicken to watch this with me. They're the first birds to know about this
I love America laughing face
3:33 ok, this is downright hysterical,
Funniest alternative history in ages
ok unrelated, but despite being a great power the soviet union only having a debt of 65 billion even with lack of trading partners and sanctions is kind of insane! only like 3 percent debt to gdp ratio
Mordovia actually was the last Soviet ASSR till an hour later
What if Vinland (Leif erikssons colony) was successful
I saw a video like this where it had multiple parts where eventually kazakhstan conquers the world as the ussr but i CANNOT find it
Fun fact but this has already happened but it wasn’t Kazakhstan it was Transnistria so Kazakhstan would likely end up in a similar position
That new automatic audio translation feature is just horrible. I was so confused when a computer voice automatically talked to me in German.
I sure did love watching this in French
Russia 🇷🇺 - Eastern Soviet Union.
Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 - Holy Soviet Union.
Video 22 of asking for what if sun yat sen’s china survived
I always thought about this scenario as being Gorbachev Kazakhstan
what if Rio de Janeiro became the portuguese capital in 1775 after the Lisbon fire
The soviet union still exists if you count translvania (communist part of moldovia)
*i collected some cool scenarios from r/possiblehistory*
what if the arabs took constantinople?
what if everything went perfect for japan in ww2?
what if everything went perfect for albania?
*and i also created my own*
what if italy was the main player in ww2?
what if hitler fled to argentina and took over the government?
what if capitalist democrats rebelled instead of communists in russia?
what if prc invaded taiwan and the roc stayed in hainan?
what if russia stayed communist after the collpase of the ussr?
what if russia went democratic and joined nato?
what if ww1 was reenacted in ww2 (roleplaying like ww2&1 in modern day)
what if russia got more of america?
what if non-aligned movement won the cold war?
what if napoleon went to italy after elba and built an empire there?
I think becoming the Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan would be much better and healthier for the political discourse there, given it would remove Russian imperialism from the equation.
What if Gran Colombia survived?
Yay a video about bestest nation kazakhstan! :D
Video idea : What if instead of Austria turning into Austria-Hungary, Hungary got independence instead?
Kazakhstan situation would be much more similar to FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) than Taiwan (Republic of China/Chinese Taipei)
You forgot about transnistria there technically the Soviet Union because of there flag and the fact that they still use the hammer and sickle symbol to this day
Scream if you love Kazakstan 🇰🇿🇰🇿🇰🇿
Edit: by the way, what song is used in the second half of the video?
Would there be any precedent for soviet hardliners in other nations supporting the Kazakh USSR?
I'd say a slightly less unrealistic scenario is not only Kazakhstan but all of Central Asia stays in the USSR and after Russian pressure, they rebrand. Maybe they can come up with a deal of allowing a 6th seat at the security council
Russia: “stop calling yourself the last fragment of the USSR or we’ll keep you out of our plans down the road.”
USSR: “…and I took that personally, for I am the USSR.”
I wonder if it might be a boon to Russia in this situation diplomatically, would really blunt a lot of post-soviet russophobia if they could just point south and say "What? No, we're not the Soviets, they're on our southern border, what are you TALKING about?!' xD
New video idea: what if Georgia did not collapsed in 1490.
Well it happened after Alexandre I "Great" it was culmination of events which came worse after his death so i would like if you made his decisions even better for state and im interested what would turn out from this alternative scenario amd would georgia join varna crusade with trebizond in 1444.
I was literally thinking about this earlier, I guess Stalin smiles upon me.
