Red got so lucky he didn’t get plowed TWICE in the first couple turns, this man had no brick production for the road, and the first rolls were 8,8,6 which gave them enough sheep to 4:1 for the brick and stop the 2nd plow, actually nuts. (Granted 6 and 8 are obviously high rollers so it is kind of manufactured luck, but it’s so crazy that happened)

I think I disagree with you on placements this time Drew. I do think that decision to plow at the start is what what gave you your most consistent odds of winning. I think there is more value in basically shutting down reds OWS potential with the 9/12 starting placement and plow. The 6/3/11 as Drews second placement just makes this game way scarier IMO. If red had no competition for the wood port, they would have been flying. Red would have had by far the best production and number diversity to start the game. I am not sure about reds decision to plow to the wheat port, but utilizing a trade with Drew at the start should have made it pretty easy. So I am not sure why they were so upset by your extortion. Wood for brick, right? Or anything to help them get to the wheat port. With red on the wood and wheat port, they would have been a menace! This would have been a battle for army, they could have even looped around desert for the connect. Instead, red got last.
2nd pick has to be by far the most likely to win if everyone is a similar skillset, but catan strategy reminds me a lot chess strategy. Throwing someone off rhythm by doing something unexpected, will almost always diminish gameplay. Nice victory

Rare res strat. This been a deciding factor of many of my first settles. Especially when cornered. This is even more exasperated in 1v1.
I am curious what you think Drew.. Would you ever reconsider the 8/4/10 after seeing how placements worked out? I think there is a good chance you still get that same 6/3/11 option for your second placement. That is way better number diversity. If you got the 8/3 3:1 port as your first road/settle, you would be terrifying. Then the sheep port would make you unstoppable.
There is definitely something to be said about your ability to find good trades and so having control over the best (6)brick/(9)wheat spots should be considered.. so Im really not sure if theres a much more consistent play for you besides the one that you elected to take, but I do think this is worth considering. Best of luck on the next one

Non block- it means you won't block them if they trade that resource to you in exchange for any one resource you offer.
Just to clarify as some people get confused- it means they won't block you this one time.
You may also see 'ns' this stands for non steal and is the same concept, but in this case they will block you but not steal from you.
