You've reminded me that my cure for the same thing involved getting up, opening the door, ignoring the cats completely (other than blocking them from coming in), and swiftly spritzing the lower part of the door with Ô De Lancôme eau de toilette spray (get a part-used bottle off eBay if you're not going to use it as your actual fragrance - it's kind of expensive as a pet deterrent otherwise!). He did it with we children also, stopping arguing noises or tantrums, or whining from a different room. We shut up fast too, lol. It works! He never had to raise a hand to dog or child. We all knew he was boss, and loved him for it.

So glad I came across your channel. You really set your apart from all the other trainers and it shows in all of your dogs. Thanks for the great content.
I have a 10 month corgi who barked at ants crawling outside. I've been searching the web for training tips and all the traditional guides have not worked. I tried this method but instead of him behind a door I cued up some TH-cam dog noises (dogs barking, construction etc) to get him to bark. I yelled QUIET in the same stern voice in the video and clapped LOUD. I mean, cup your hands and give it a deep clap, LOUD. It definitely spooked my dog and I waited about 5 seconds and after he made eye contact with me, I gave him a "good boy" and a treat or his favorite toy. I did play a couple rounds of fetch with him in between new noises so he wouldn't be scared of me after the clap. He really was spooked. Now he is sleeping to the dogs barking video. Thanks Beckman!!!!
Thanks so much for the negative training video. IT WORKED!!! I don't know if you you would advocate this for separation anxiety, but I did try this for separation anxiety. After your loud noise technique, AFTER the third day in a row(of negative training), on day four there was no need to knock on the door. My dog was perfectly quiet. Then on day 1 I left my dog for 1 hour, day two I left for 2 hrs , day 3 I left for 3 hours and you guessed it on day 4 my dog went up to 4 hours quiet. I rarely stay away for more that 4 hours, but I do have a neighbor who will take him out and feed him. Also, I leave him plenty of treats. I forgot to mention I do have a camera, so I could watch him ( walk across the table!!!!! HaHaHa) I learned how to stop that by pushing the chairs close to the table. I love my adopted dog. Thank you again!
When I was given my rotti (she was surrendered from a parent’s coworker) she would bark wherever she was. All the training books I read said to ignore the dog as to not positively reinforce the barking. I tried that method & the neighbors called the cops on us. 😅 This method seems more useful.
Yup. well done. I trained my dogs for several years and the number one tip is learning the behavior of your dog in order to give it the right response. Your life and your dogs life will be so much more relaxed. Thank you for the video!
I like your training videos because you treat the dogs like they have a personality and intelligence (and they have) people are to soft especially to cute things like animals, but to have discipline you have to enforce some things, sometimes.
Thank you! Everyone is so worried about hurting their dogs feelings. I cannot stand unnecessary barking....especially when I am living in a townhouse. You can't allow your dogs to become a pain in the butt to your neighborhood. My neighbors 2 dogs hit the side of the privacy fence and bark at my little guy and me. A lot of times it scares him so he runs back inside. My dog never barks....it is so miserable to live this way.
I don’t understand how you don’t have more subs. I am glad I discovered this channel! Great overall this video a good energetic watch. I don’t agree with it all but man I feel what you’re doing. Bravo
@@christga100 I have no idea what you’re trying to say @ your first sentence haha My take on Joel, I can’t comment much as my dog is already pretty well behaved. He’s not perfect but he’s kinda old so I try not to punish him unless it’s a serious behaviour (like freaking out at another dog). But I really enjoy his video, he has an old dad humour (in a good way) and I love his straight to the point attitude. And he seems pretty genuine to me!
@@christga100 me too! I think his attitude around the dog is what makes it work as well. However call me soft but i can’t bring myself to be too harsh on my 9 year old husky 😭 I don’t really “punish” him but I still try to be the boss around him.
@@christga100 my male husky is far from being aggressive, in fact I’ve never heard him growl in his whole life. He just gets overly excited and wants to meet everyone and every dog! But I’m from Malaysia and we don’t really let our dogs off leash here (unless it’s a dog park)
Holy fu*k I could not believe it. Tried it once on my 11-week puppy and it worked the first time! It's like magic. I went comfort him after 30 seconds of silence and he has settled and slept alone in his crate. Thank you so much for this wonderful video!!!!!
This is exactly right! Thank you for this video. Sure wish you had a camera in that room. I'm imagining this girl sat down staring at the door thinking, well, that's not what I wanted. Great video.
Im in my 80's. All the other dogs I've had in my life have been trained like kids. Behave well, be rewarded and comfortable. Behave badly, get uncomfortable consequences. It wasn't hard. Just watch them, love them, and act accordingly. But now - got a puppy from the shelter and there's all this advice about never using the word no. Use tons of treats to provoke good behavior, etc. Puppy class trainer showed us how to lead puppy around with peanut butter on a big spoon and give multiple treats. The puppy is very smart, very quick, very feisty so she plays on the treat thing for all she's worth and i end up struggling, struggling with her. And yes, i was doing it "right." Then i see a British training video where guy teaches to act totally in charge, say no when needed and yes, reward good behavior with treats occasionally and praising voice. Puppy immediately responds and feels as if finally we are actually going for a walk. Of course, never scream your puppy's name in panic or anger. Stay calm, be in charge, sound in charge, repeat as often as necessary and as long as necessary. Back to common sense. Yay!
I love that you use training new dogs. I feel like it's easier to learn how to use this on my dog instead of when someone is trying to show on a dog that already listens
So I tried to is method on my 6.5 month old Yorkie, but not for barking-for scratching at the door when I’m on the other side. It worked like a charm. Thank you Joel!
Incredible, thanks. I’ve been losing time following positive reinforcement BS to stop barking, which obviously won’t work for the reasons you stated. Thanks!!
Finally! Sensible advice! We just brought home an 8 week old pup and trying to make his crate a fun place by feeding him in it, tossing treats in and waiting for him to stop whining is so not working. I am going to try this tomorrow and am betting it will be the solution I’m looking for. Thank you😀🐶
From Australia, man love your commonsense vids......no nonsense and not always about treat here and treat there for everything. Learning a lot from your vids.....Keep up the excellent work. Cheers
This makes absolute sense. I did the same thing to my puppy when I brought her home and put her in her kennel. The first 2 nights she was next to our bed in the kennel with the kennel covered. That first night she started to bark. When she did I said quiet and hit the top of her kennel. Didn’t have to do it but one time. I learned that trick from McCann’s Dogs on what to do the first night when you bring your puppy home. It works!!!
Followed your advice here for a new 1 year old rescue that's being crate trained. On Day 3, I have completely eliminated the barking using this method only 3 times (Bark > "Quiet!" > Rattle the crate)
This is basically what people always used to do with their barking dogs ! - long before we had Dog Trainers - it is common sense - it is like everyone now has forgotten what they saw and knew growing up - or maybe everyone just grew up in animal free homes ! ? I struggle to explain what looks to me - like learnt stupidity / helplessness by dog owners. Good on Joel for reminding everyone of the basics to dog ownership / training - which is logical / works and is not based on mindlessly giving treats ! !
For some reason it was hilarious to me when he smacked the door and that little dog shut up. I couldn't wait to try it this morning on my 6 month old puppy and damn, it worked!
One of the things I really do appreciate that you don't push the Subscribe/ like button.. I have watched multiple videos of yours and you've never asked/ IT'S amazing BTW TY.
I’m guessing this person just appreciates not being asked to do something that 99% (yup, totally did the math lol) of TH-cam users know is a thing, that it gives feedback to the content creator, and further the liking/subscribing/commenting also benefits said content creator. One of the things that influenced me to subscribe is his no nonsense practical attitude coupled with training that makes sense (to me). ‘Smashing that like button and not forgetting to subscribe’ falls under the practical heading of being a given/goes without saying. I could also be projecting and my interpretation completely off base.
I have a five month year old puppy with a lot of screeching from his playpen mostly for attention I’m imagining or for not being able to see me directly in another room. How do I handle that? You are the first Trainer I am following.😊
Appreciate your content Joel. Was curious to see a fellow Beckman's method and I find your lessons very clear and important. Could you do another video on other types of barking - people or animals outside, knocking on doors etc?
The best and simplest method! Awesome. I actually made it worse following another video where the trainer said to train the dog to bark on command saying that will help the dog understand because the barking will only get reinforced when prompted. Sounds ok, but takes a long time (half a day) and made it worse than better.
You're right, you won't find it on You Tube but you will find it being used by many of us in the field working who know this is very effective method in stopping reinforced barking.
THANK YOU!! 🙏💕 I’ve been GOING OUT OF MY MIND!!! My puppy doesn’t like being away from me, to sleep in his crate! He’s 9 weeks old, and I understand it’s a big change for him and myself actually! There are construction workers next door, and they’ve been drilling, hammering etc, whilst my puppy has been barking ALL AT THE SAME TIME!! 😩😤🤯 I’ve been TEARING MY HAIR OUT!!! Thanks to you, my pup has stopped barking! I tested it a few times and thenI screamed “WOHOOOO!!”😀 lolol! I DON’T like shouting at him, but I agree this is NOT mean, it’d be worse for the dog, if their owner is constantly frustrated with them! No one wins then!
I have a collie and he's pretty good.... but there are times when he sees other dogs and maybe because he is a puppy he gets excited that if the other dog barks, Dante chimes in. I've snapped the lead sideways with a quiet. This is tough. Love the methods you teach.
You do amazing job helping many dogs and people, I love your channel! Can I apply this specific method also on a 8 week´s old puppy? I would not like to make her scared when hitting the door and possibly make things even worse...we are from Czech Republic - Peter & Betty the beagle - Thank you and Good Luck!
Great video. Thank you. Any suggestions on how to get my 9 year old Labradoodle and now my 6 month old Australian Labradoodle to stop barking at people and particularly delivery trucks outside. The new pup is following his queues and barking when he barks. They both sit at the bay window and bark whenever anything is outside. Thank you
Seriously wtf this method, i have a pup for 6 months tried everything. In the bench she is always barking. Now i did this it only took 5 mins now i do her in the bench and she is not barking. Thank you so much😊
got a 9 month old staffy from someone, barked non stop, i could not sleep.... i tried a few other things that was not effective, i then found this months ago and tried it... put the dog in small room, when he barked i did exactly as you said... i done this a few times inside and as time went on i done the exact thing when he was outside, id wait by the door or window and wait for the bark and do the same no, then bang on the door or window... over 1 week, it pretty much eliminated it. this works really well.
I wish I knew this method a long time ago, when my parents have bought a Yorkshire Terrier for my sister. I came across this channel today, and I love it! Moreover, as I want to have an Alaskan Malamute or a Samoyed in the future (I'd like it to behave a lot better than her York). I'm smashing these "like" buttons xD
Fantastic video. Love this technique. Can I ask how you would use this method if the dog was on the same side of the door as you and wanting to go out? Would you approach and tap the door next to the dog?
Our dog barks at every single vehicle that goes in front of our house and barks at any outside noise she hears. She is a very sweet female lab retriever. We adopted her five years ago. Totally inside dog.
u need a different way of correction to startle the dog after saying NO; ie. say NO loud and clap your hands hard, or say NO and use a can of pennies and shake it or throw it on the floor.
I used a radio set to LOUD and used a remote to mute the radiosound. I went out reach/sight of the dog and waited for him to start barking. Than I turned mute off so the dog would hear a loud radio noice, took me 2 times than he was cured :)
We have two American Akita’s. One of them becomes very excited anytime she is in the car. When we pull up to a drive-through window she will bark incessantly. Not aggressively but just excited. How can we correct this behavior. There is a gate that keeps them in the back of the car so they’re not sitting on our laps. But this also makes it difficult to access them. Really enjoy your content and have learned so much.
I guess it's case sensitive, the dog in the video learned that barking is not an way out of the room. If you correct your dog for barking at people passing by it should be different from entering your house, for example. He already shown that a dog shouldn't be all bark and anxious if you allowed the person in your property, I believe it is in dogs nature to alarm you something is wrong. Mine doesn't bark at everything, but certain triggers, I correct her when it's not related to our house (like a horse passing by) but if it's a stranger acting suspicious right at our door, I allow her, I check it, and pet her, she stops after.
Hey there! Loving the videos. What would you do for a dog that barks at the front door or window? We have an Akita that has taught all of our dogs to bark at anything and everything they see through windows or front doors
Thanks! Going to try a can with screws in it can for my dogs incessant and ridiculous barking! We did that with a previous dog and I completely forgot about it! We are used to it, but her baby sitters who love her are not fans!
This is great! What about dogs that bark at front door sounds (knocks, doorbells, or just people walking by)? I'm struggling with correcting my dog when he barks at the door.
i had a problem wirh the door bell. i got over this with a solid go to your bed and stay there until you are released command. i put in about a 1000reps in a distraction free environment using a slip lead to reinforce staying on the bed. then, i got about 20 people to come to my home one person at a time, stay for a very short time and ignore the dog like its not there.
Great video, but I am wondering about other types of barking. One of our dogs barks incessantly every time we let him out in the backyard, or take him out in the front on a leash. Pretty sure it isn't fear related, he just likes barking at nothing, or any of our neighbors, or squirrels or nothing again. The positive reinforcement method for fixing this is slow, and so far ineffective.
Whats the approach if/when the dog becomes sensitized to it? I had done a similar thing with a bottle of water and coins inside the bottle - you shake or smack the bottle when theyre doing something and that startles them. After a couple days he eventually became used to it and ignored the shake and continued the behavior
I'll say what he is not saying...just like you discipline a child you discipline a dog. They are young, curious and naive so they really dont know any better. Sometimes children as well as adults only learn a lesson through physical examples and even then they shouldn't be excessive. I'll admit when I started watching this channel I was intrigued but very startled at the physical aspect of the training. I have watched a bunch of channels about training methods and I realized this is some of the most effective methods for dogs that are not puppies anymore. I own a (9yr) Pit mix who is an incredible dog with humans but is a serious problem when meeting new dogs as well as suffering from SEVERE separation anxiety. I have spent $1000's of dollars on doors/carpets he has SHREDDED whilst "trapped" behind, blinds, clothes, weak crates he has rusted and bent to escape, woodwork from chewing entrances etc... This has haunted/prevented my choice of living situations and roommates etc.. This channel works if you have the time and are consistent. "Bacon" will be 9 in October and he has learned 2 things since I have started watching this channel like 4 months ago at most. THANK YOU!!!!
I am blind, and live alone. My dog barks at anyone who even thinks about pulling in anywhere even close to my apartment, or even across the street. I don't mind a few barks just to let me know there might be someone here, but it goes above and beyond what is acceptable, and even when it's someone she knows, it's still the "let me at 'em" kind of bark, and she's jumping up against the screen door trying to get out and get at them. Once they come inside, she calms down and wants to play. How can I teach her when the behavior is okay, how much is okay, and when it's not? Another problem I have is her growling at strangers. It's not a hackles up kind of growl, but still not acceptable for a dog that I am training to be my guide dog. She is super smart and patient. I'll never forget the first time I ever tried putting a harness on her. I had no clue what I was doing, but she just sat there for like 30 minutes and let me figure it out. Also, it was super obvious, just a few days after adopting her that she knew I couldn't see her. And, she's made a ton of progress, but the growling and crazy barking has to stop. Any tips would be much appreciated. She is a mixed breed. best guess is blue heeler and some kind of hound. She isn't nippy or hyper like a lot of heelers. Maybe not the kind of dog most would associate with a guide dog, but I think she will work out. When I first got her, she was just going to be a pet, but after realizing just how smart she is, and her temperment at least with me, I figured there was nothing to lose in trying. Just those few small things to work out. Lastly, since she isn't the type of dog that would normally be used as a guide dog, are there any tips you could give me to help harness her particular talents and abilities and make them actually work for what I am trying to do? I mean, since she isn't the kind of breed normally used for a guide dog, perhaps the way she is trained might need to be changed up to take advantage of her particular strengths. Even if you are not a guide dog trainer, your knowledge of dogs in general could be incredibly helpful.
Hi ,, love your video,, how about living in a Victorian house , adjoining living room wall , to neighbour , their dogs bark non stop when they leave ,, have spoken to them they are not interested.. and have told them it’s obvious they have separation anxiety, is their a device I can buy and speaker to penetrate through to their wall to shut them up ?? As I can hear them they can hear me . Thanks
How to do this at 5am after puppy goes to the bathroom outside then has to get put back into crate for another hour? Thats when the barking persists and giving a loud quiet could wake up family still asleep (ironically they never hear him barking though) REALLY APPRECIATE the response to such an old video!!!! 👍🏼
I have a dog that refuses to move with me on walks. I used a gentle leader for months bc he would find something he wanted to sniff and STAY over that spot for several minutes if i let him. dozens upon dozens of times in a 5 minute walk. that to me, defeated the purpose of the walk; excersise. Once i saw how this guy uses a quick, low, "pop" of the lead- how he corrects leash pulling/lunging- I started to do it to my own dog after his second warning of "come on". oh the relief. Finally I had a dog that would move on from whatever he was sniffing on the first command. negative reenforcement is necessary for some dogs bc i cannot have a treat on me EVERY SINGLE SECOND of EVERY SINGLE DAY to get him to do what I want.
I just tried this with my yappy pom and it worked! I would say QUIET and slap his crate and put him away then wait a few seconds for him to quiet and let him out. 3rd time he finally understood.

I like your training videos because you treat the dogs like they have a personality and intelligence (and they have)
people are to soft especially to cute things like animals, but to have discipline you have to enforce some things, sometimes.
Bravo
@@christga100 I mean look at 3:01 this guy is hilarious 😂
@@christga100 I have no idea what you’re trying to say @ your first sentence haha
My take on Joel, I can’t comment much as my dog is already pretty well behaved.
Exactly! Lol.
It SURE works for me!! You've been such a blessing at my house, and I'm pretty good with dogs already!! Thank you so much.
This works so well! We didn’t know what to do, and what we were doing wasn’t working. Thank you!
And yes, i was doing it "right."
Then i see a British training video where guy teaches to act totally in charge, say no when needed and yes, reward good behavior with treats occasionally and praising voice.
Thank you😀🐶
I have used this method for every dog I've had in the last 30 years. Worked with every dog.
Please, please do a video explaining how to stop barking at people or sounds. Thanks!
Yes please !
Yeah, my dog barks at the neighbors! Fortunately, they're all wonderful! 🙂
Please
Yes.please
Please. Especially out in public
It works!!!
This man is a gold mine of knowledge
Followed your advice here for a new 1 year old rescue that's being crate trained. On Day 3, I have completely eliminated the barking using this method only 3 times (Bark > "Quiet!" > Rattle the crate)
You nailed it. No BS, simple advice that works.
I'm learning so much through your videos! Thank you!
So logical. So effective. So positive with humane teaching.
IM TRYING THIS METHOD RIGHT NOW AND MY DOG HAS FINALLY GONE 4 WHOLE MINUTES WITHOUT BARKING!!!!
lol 😆
What about now
Did it work?
The organism will always do what previously made it successful.
Interrupt that and you'll see a massive difference.
Loved this video.
"The organism" 😂
True though
The best dog trainer ive come across. Thanks!!!!!!
YOU are my soul sibling. Thanks for posting, I watch every day.
Thank you
I always leave smarter than when I first came in. Nicely done!
Absolutely works. Thanks for the reassurance and confidence of how i train.
For some reason it was hilarious to me when he smacked the door and that little dog shut up.
I couldn't wait to try it this morning on my 6 month old puppy and damn, it worked!
One of the things I really do appreciate that you don't push the
Subscribe/ like button.. I have watched multiple videos of yours and you've never asked/ IT'S amazing BTW TY.
so you reinforced the not asking by pushing the subscribe button, right?
Doesn’t help Joel and his family though. Nice going.
Cool, I don’t meet another Beckman everyday, you must be a great guy.
Nr 1 place for dog advice! Thank you!! There is a great market for you, sir, in Child upbringing as well;)
Thank you
I just tried this at 1130 at night…. It worked 😍, I’m standing outside of the room 3 minutes now and nothing🙌🏽
I love this
Seriously wtf this method, i have a pup for 6 months tried everything.
I love watching Beckman he is very entertaining 😊
Excellent video, but could you show us how to stop a dog barking when someone comes to the front door please?
I wish I knew this method a long time ago, when my parents have bought a Yorkshire Terrier for my sister. I came across this channel today, and I love it! Moreover, as I want to have an Alaskan Malamute or a Samoyed in the future (I'd like it to behave a lot better than her York). I'm smashing these "like" buttons xD
@Mateusz M Be prepared for a talking dog if you get a husky/malamute. They are very vocal. Not barking but howling. Look at Sherpa's TH-cam channel.
@Mateusz M And, you subscribed! Very cool.
Wow!! I am totally on board with this and will be using! Thank you
Finally, a barking video. Thank you.
Wonderful stuff. I bet you have never had behaviour issues with your kids either.
You have a fantastic gentle authoritative approach.
This really works! Super simple and works quickly!
This is great. But what would I do about constant alert barking. Or barking for attention or play? (And dog is not in a crate or another room)
u need a different way of correction to startle the dog after saying NO; ie. say NO loud and clap your hands hard, or say NO and use a can of pennies and shake it or throw it on the floor.
I used a radio set to LOUD and used a remote to mute the radiosound. I went out reach/sight of the dog and waited for him to start barking. Than I turned mute off so the dog would hear a loud radio noice, took me 2 times than he was cured :)
Same method and being very consistent
That is one adorable dog!
"Quiet"... Made me want to watch Cobra Kai again...
Joel: “quiet!” *slaps door*
Dog: 👁👄👁
I was expecting a 💩
Great advice, thank you so much!
You are awesome! Thank you🐾❤️
Awesome, never seen this technique anywhere.
This reminds me of people in the store who give into crying children and reward them for crying and throwing fits.
Exactly! So, what would happen if you didn't weed your garden?.......you gotta correct it, right? 🙂
Yep same principle. Discipline! Boundaries.
This is awesome! I have one question: Will this cause the dog to not bark when he should? For example, when a burglar or unwelcome visitor shows up.
I agree , I have my dogs for protection , but if they stop barking to be let out what will they do if they want out of that room to go potty ect
Thanks so much
Well demonstrated. This makes sense .
Tanks for this important video! I want to try this method!
Good for you. Great timing.
It lets anyone sussing out your home you’ve a dog. These people note whose home has a dog.
That’s a great question…you want the dog to scare off would-be intruders, yes? So how do you get them to bark just enough? Or is there such a thing?
@@Aimless_Red they usually stop when the “ threat” has walked past.
i had a problem wirh the door bell. i got over this with a solid go to your bed and stay there until you are released command. i put in about a 1000reps in a distraction free environment using a slip lead to reinforce staying on the bed. then, i got about 20 people to come to my home one person at a time, stay for a very short time and ignore the dog like its not there.
I've tried this video with both my dogs but they're still barking. Gonna have to make them watch it AGAIN!
😥
@Anton Gully 😄 😄😄 Good joke. But this works. You need to do the work...
I just noticed I did the wrong “face”. Meant to do this 😂
👍🏼
Try shaking a coke can fill of pennies (when the dog is in the room). Scared the living daylights out of my dog and stopped her barking!
This guy is phenomenal
Hi ,, love your video,, how about living in a Victorian house , adjoining living room wall , to neighbour , their dogs bark non stop when they leave ,, have spoken to them they are not interested.. and have told them it’s obvious they have separation anxiety, is their a device I can buy and speaker to penetrate through to their wall to shut them up ?? As I can hear them they can hear me . Thanks
I love you so much for this video 😂❤ thanks a lot!!!
How to do this at 5am after puppy goes to the bathroom outside then has to get put back into crate for another hour? Thats when the barking persists and giving a loud quiet could wake up family still asleep (ironically they never hear him barking though)
REALLY APPRECIATE the response to such an old video!!!!
👍🏼
When I rattle my crate he just goes crazier
You are genius!!
Excellent video thank you..
Thanks for your videos! At what age could we start this with our puppy?
I just tried this with my yappy pom and it worked! I would say QUIET and slap his crate and put him away then wait a few seconds for him to quiet and let him out. 3rd time he finally understood.
Simple and genius! 😅😅😅
