I am not supporting skin bleaching at all. but as a dark skinned woman who lives in Africa the treatment I get a a dark skinned woman is honestly sometimes very hurtful and disrespectful. it's only because my mother taught me to love my skin but not everyone can be that strong. especially if you're not rich or that educated. until we can learn to TRULLY APPRECIATE ALL COLOURS . this well never stop.

Absolutely. Sorry you have to go through this, it shouldn't be like that, especially on our continent! Unfortunately the notion of having lighter skin is still so deeply rooted in colonial histories, which perpetuates the notion that lighter skin equates to privilege and beauty; which creates mental and social anguish for you and other darker skin beauties. By creating a space to talk about the pain you experience and also educating us all concerning bleaching and questioning it, is important. It is all our responsibility to change the narrative!

In Africa??? I thought dark skin and black pride was celebrated and appreciated! I heard Vera Sidika mention that on Nairobi Diaries! I was floored and shocked to hear how Africans are becoming delusional like black Americans! It’s scary and sad. 🥺

I am dark skinned woman born to a very light skin mother. I look like my father. My Sisters and brothers were all light skinned. Growing up, I was told by ppl that my sisters are more beautiful than me and that it was a shame I was born dark.
One day, I think when I was about 8 yrs old, I went to my father and told him what my aunties were saying to me.
He put me on his lap and said to me....listen daughter, look at all your siblings and then look at yourself. You are literally the only one I can say for sure is my child 😂😂.
It was this type of humour /serious reassurance from my father and my mother that also always told me I was beautiful growing up I never once thought to lighten my skin.
I thank god every day for my melanin. God never makes mistakes. I wish my fellow brothers and sisters could appreciate the gift God gave us as African ppl.
Lots of love to all my dark skinned Queens and Kings. ❤

Genuine question, because I guess you get to see your mom's light skin every day. Did you think white or light skinned people really looked like the models on the packaging of these creams? Isn't the cosmetics industry part of the problem? The first time I ever saw these creams for sale was in Singapore maybe 20 years ago. I'm white, btw, but I'm not used to seeing people wearing any makeup. It was shocking to me because white people don't actually look like this.

Just as they tell American blacks they cannot blame everything on racism, Africans can’t blame everything on colonialism. At some point in time you have to take responsibility for your own hearts and minds. This is mainly occurring in majority black countries. It is nowhere near as prolific in countries where black is the minority.

Some Asian has white/ light skin but I, myself, has colored one, brown or whatever, am so proud of having it 👍🏻 especially when I visited some European countries.
They are amazed by my skin, hair color, etc. Even there are some who tried to touch to feel the smooth healthy skin.
Look, no matter what color your skin is, the most important thing is it has a healthy one. And be proud of how you are.

I am a european 73 year old woman, living in South Africa. I can only say: Ladies look after your natural skin, regardless how light or dark it is. When I compare the texture of any brown skin, being so smooth, plump and soft, to a white skin, your skin wins. Our white skin is as soft like yours, only in children. We age quicker, our skin wrinkles earlier. We women are crazy, brown girls want to have a lighter skin, white girls are tanning like crazy to get darker. If you could see my body today, after all those hours tanning, you would be shocked. I have scales like a lizard, memories of frying in the sun. Accept the colour you are, regardless what the fashion dictates.

As youngsters we chase ideals ....being skinny, hair colour, dark skin, light skin. .curly hair, straight hair, bigger this or that, it's endless. And so often, as in this case ...harmful. Women should be celebrated for the amazing people we are. Any young ladies reading this, with any colour skin....you are perfect as you are. Please don't use toxic stuff in the chase after beauty.
