When Black Francis was a kid, his father told him stories, often about an adventurous character called Black Jack Hooligan, and his girlfriend, Catfish Kate. This song tells the story of how Kate got her nickname. Imagination is a wonderful thing.

As a 30 year long Pixies fan, I really dig this song and video. The lyrics are such a perfect example of their dark, but tongue in cheek sense of humor.
I want to personally thank Neirin, Lianne, Christopher, Rio, Christia, and Lois for putting together such a beautiful masterpiece of animation and storyline of the lyrical content.
Of course I miss Kim, but I feel like they couldn’t have chosen a better bass player than Paz. Those were some big shoes to fill, but Paz seems to fit right in, and she and Black’s vocal harmonies work perfectly together.

Like all the best Pixies tunes this lulls you into a false sense of security with it's pop melodies and uplifting harmonies, only to make you subconsciously question this elation with it's despairing melancholy lyrics. GENIUS.

This is currently my favorite song in the whole world.

This song warms my soul like the sun shining through the leaves on an early autumn afternoon.
The Pixies are really finding themselves again. This song has such joy and charisma. Where there isn't a deep philosophical enigma, there is a cryptic love story about a slacker who adored a fierce, mighty and independent woman. The loud joyful refrains seems to sing in dissonant cheerfulness about his uncertainty if she's alive, while in the quiet tense verses the singer recounts the details of her gore-drenched victory over her assailant, disdainfully repeating the final fate of the challenger to his angel:
"The morning showed the bloody sight
Kate all dressed in catfish clothes
his whiskers for her catfish robes.
Whiskers, for her robes."
It's not clear whether he is Kate's lover, although that seems implied by his earlier mention that they now "make their home" where she once defended herself from a giant catfish. She also returns to him alive and newly donning the flesh and whiskers of her adversary, suggesting that they are both happy to see each other again. The song doesn't explain or break down any of it, though, but simply tells this cool tale about that time she spent a whole day and night fighting for her life and came home wearing the other guy.

last summer my gf and i were boogie boarding at the beach when we got swept out too far from shore and couldn’t make it back. as the waves were crashing into us, this was the song i was singing/humming to keep from panicking until help finally found us. idk why, but it was just stuck in my head that day; thanks pixies for helping me keep my cool that day :)

I don't get why so many people act like the post reunion Pixies output is bad or subpar compared to their old stuff. I just listened to Indie Cindy again a few days ago and it's a really good album. So is Head Carrier. The two new songs I've heard are both good too.

I agree. It's like, they can't just put out the SAME albums again. They already did that. Just because they're moving forward and not trying to rehash the same exact thing over and over doesn't mean they're not still the same band who did Doolittle. I love and appreciate everything Pixies have ever done. Their evolution is honestly really classy and badass. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

@@weavarepfours Yeah, I really like Greens and Blues (I think that's the name, I have it on my Itunes and have heard it a million times but I never look at the song names) and Silver Snail. Indie Cindy is a really good tune too.
Really the two new songs sound great to me. I think people just got so invested in the old stuff that they built it up to the point where they have to attack anything new the band does. Plus there's a lot of Kim fans that don't like that they continued without her.
I can't wait for the new album personally. I don't usually get excited about new music these days but I'm genuinely excited for the new Pixies album.
This thread is full of the common fallacy that people seem to not understand. Pixies fans have no problem with Pixies doing something new. Doolittle is very different from Surfer Rosa and Bossanova is very different from Doolittle, and so on. But the one consistent thing about their discography is that it is different. Their music is unique and was innovative in several subgenres of rock that were to come in the 90s. They were never afraid to go out of the box even with their poppiest tunes. It was music of passion and creativity. Indie Cindy was something different in the sense that it didn't sound like Tromp Le Monde, but it was not a musical evolution or even an experiment into some new territory, it was a regression into passionless and formulaic pop rock with lyrics and vocals only a pale imitation of their former selves. It sounded like Frank just didn't give a shit anymore, his vocals were painfully bland, ignoring the one time he does a bad ACDC impression on Blue Eyed Hexe, and the instrumentals sounded tired. Compare that to anything The Breeders have made and yes it's pretty similar from album to album, but Kim Deal and company sound genuinely passionate for what they are doing and like they might even enjoy making music. Pixies are so out of ideas that they even though that making Head Carrier more like Doolittle and Surfer Rosa that they would please fans, when to me it was worse in a sense because it was so clear that they were out of ideas. They just barfed out a set of vague throw back tunes with little shape or personality and even stole one of their own riffs just to make a lame "apology" to Kim Deal. This new record sounds better in some ways, but in others it's still just bland Indie Rock with a tiny bit of flavoring from things like horror punk.

omg they opened for the Cure with Love and Rockets in 89 I saw them and had been listening them at that point for years..i didn't know who I was more happy to see the Cure or the PIxies? they were such different act but both put out a historic show..but my fav show when I was a Limelight Dj and went on Sunday there to see Pearl Jam(the day after there 93 SNL performance they played the Limelight on Sundays called Communion at the Limelight because it was a big 12 story church with 4 stories below and could fit over 1,000 easy) and spent time with the band...and I would meet Morrissey and many others as well..

I miss old Pixies, but I love this post-Trompe trajectory. I still hope there's some classic Pixies staples like half-tone-deaf screaming, also jagged warbling Santiago lines... lol and queasy chord progressions. lol maybe I'm really just begging for Head Carrier 2 then. Also minimalist sparse arrangements (think 'I Bleed' or 'Hey'). Of course a straight tune like this makes for a good radio single. The progressions and melodies telegraph their resolutions. Goes down easy.
By what I've heard so far, I'll probably pick up the vinyl.
