Hi Dan, 4901 never carried the silver grey livery. It came into service in 1938 when Garter Blue was standard. It was one of the 4 locomotives of the A4 class that were built with double chimneys. The rest of the class including, the silver grey ones, had single chimneys until the late 1950s when they were fitted with the double version.

    Hi Dan,
Just came up to #26! Catching up fast. I heard you mention about the theory of how removing the armature can weaken the magnet. I believe it is mostly for bar magnets and not so much for the ring magnets as these have the lines of force going from one pole to the other within the ring whereas a bar magnet like those in the older Hornby locos need a magnet keeper to keep it safe and not lose the strength. I once did this with an N scale Bachmann and the magnet became very weak after a couple of days! Just my observation.
    Kind regards.
    Ananda

    Hi ya Dan.
OO Bill is very good. But you go into more detail and explain more of the electric connections and close ups are easier to understand.
    Great vlog keep it up.

Hi Dan, excellent just what I needed to see. I picked up a very broken Hornby Mallard the other day and will be studying this video intently as it is very similar and the issues are similar apart from a broken retaining arm for the drive rods that I am not sure I can fix. Really enjoying all your Trash to Track video's.

Hi Dan. The motor pinion gear can simply be bonded on with superglue, although the proper adhesive would be a green loctite engineering adhesive.
Yes magnets should have a keeper plate across the poles when removed, but that is more for steel types as per triang and dublo. This type of moulded composite multipole magnet isn't as vulnerable

Hi Dan ,, I have a hornby silver fox which is a tender drive loco too but not sure what year it is. Anyways when i bought i used the 9v battery to the power or earth pin on the tender like you did and it had some life so i bought it.
When i got it home i done a full stripdown using mostly OO bills useful info and put it on my test track and run great at a crawl but as soon as it got to 25% throttle it started getting jumpy and jittery and got worse on full throttle and would not go any faster.
I couldnt work out what the heck was wrong with it as I'd done everything correctly. I tried the 12v aligaror clips on the top of the loco and it did the same thing as in it run run great slowly but got worse with more applied power.
Then i pushed the brush retainer in towards the brushes that holds the spring and the brushes in and it started to run nicely so increased the sped to maximum and pushed both the brushe arms in and it run great but started to bet hot real quickly.
I pulled it aprt yet again and found that the 3 commutator faces were uneven and is missing when the motor spins faster so i may have to get a new commutator or try another heavier spring to force the brushes down harder onto the commutator. First ever loco i have had this problem and found one other guy that had exactly the same issue. I asked him how he fixed it he said cd drive motor conversion and you wont ever look back. So now thats the plan.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

Thinking about it I don’t think it’s been repainted in to a silver A4 livery, I think that it’s been repainted into photographic grey

lots of errors for what is meant to be a silver A4 they didn't have nameplates it was painted on in the middle of the boiler , numbers and letters are incorrect yellow and should be blue , and as you mentioned the grey vallance .... i think the only grey A4s would be photographic grey livery where everything was painted in tones of grey to look good in black and white photos
