Just a word, dear: Malaysian Indians identify themselves simply as Malaysians, as they've been here for many generations. Same goes to the local Chinese. So they don't go "back" to India because that's just not where they come from. They do go to India from time to time for travel and pilgrimage. :)

Most were born here. Have been here for generations. Many haven't even back to India . Some don't even speak Indian languages.
There are little Indias and Chinatowns all over the world. Nothing unusual about it.
You would fit in except for that strong " English " accent.

I’m Malay and I feel offended when she asked the lady about her origin and whether she had been “back” to India. I don’t see anything non-Malaysian about her, she looks like us and we are of different ethnicities but this is HOME. I don’t mind if she asked tourist-looking individuals where they’re from, but don’t ask Malaysians that. Lady, you need to learn and observe more. I’m aware that in western culture you guys can be more straightforward bordering being insensitive. But ethnic relations is a sensitive issue, and it’s subtleties should be observed and respected. Your only saving grace this time around is your British accent.

You wouldn't ask an American black how long you lived here and if you have family in Africa?
Chinese and Indians have been living here for more than 400 years and identify themselves only as Malaysian Chinese and Malaysian Indians. Within Malaysian Indians we have many groups including Tamils, Punjabis, Sindhi's and "Pakistanis" whom have arrived pre partition. Unlike British Asians still identifying themselves as Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshi'' etc even after three generations and not fully integrated( can see that when there is a cricket match) Malaysians are fully integrated and we are One Malaysia.

Found Malacca a little outdated to be honest but I only had one day so I did not really get a chance to go to all parts of it. We'll see what happens with the Mm2h program which is currently suspended and see if it is a viable option for us. Currently the way it is, it's well beyond my reach financially. ma'am, malaysia is a unique country. even though they indian but on average no longer have family in india or are in contact with family in india. maybe also because the migration of the indian community to malaysia has been too long. you ask an indian woman because maybe you think like immigrant communities who came to Britain such as Africans, Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese who have long been British citizens & lived there for centuries but still return to their country of origin to meet their families there. when you ask the Indians or Chinese who are Malaysian citizens....you will see their expressions/faces as if they don't like the question because it seems to be condescending/insulting them. I am sure the longer you live here the more you will understand about race, culture, religion , the way of life, customs, language & many other things about this country... keep exploring this country ma'am. the more you know the more you love.thank you for loving my country

History - the indians here were mostly brought to Malaysia (back then Malaya) from southern India some 180-200 years back to be labourers in building rail tracks and more later working in the rubber estates etc.
But unfortunately, when British handed over independence and left Malaysia they had forgotten to bring the Indians back.
As with chinese case, the Malays agreed to accept them to live on the same land and together our Indians brothers and sisters had contributed to the wealth and prosperity of the country.
The location of little india is just a stone throw away from the main railway station where the workers were based.

I think it is fair to say I have more exposure than most Malaysians. Had my postgrad education in UK too . Lived there for 3 years. I currently live in Singapore as my husband is Singaporean. What I am saying is there are unhappy people in every country and in Malaysia it is no different. The US is the other country I have lived in , accompanied my husband during his post grad studies for 1 year. We don't need to pretend that everyone is happy here. It doesn't in anyway reflect poorly on the country. The recent cost of living issues is a bane to most , especially the B40 group.

Just like you moved in to Malaysia and bought a house bought a car bring your income to currency here and give jobs to locals and develop them to a certain level.
Dissappointing when the government called them as investor when they came in with a little money then they rent a shop lot and sell their stuff to locals and bring back profits to their origin.
They bought nothing and bring nothing to the economy.
