Thanks a lot for this video! I managed to replace the sprocket on my 7 geared Nexus to a smaller one. Now I don't look like a road runner when I go for a ride!
If you’re having trouble getting the split ring back on, try blowing on it with a hair dryer for a bit to make it a little more flexible. It worked for me. Wear safety glasses btw. It doesn’t spring everywhere. Great video btw! It helped me a lot
I had to do this tonight and I hit upon the idea of using one of those two pronged security bits to hold the split ring in place while i used a flat head screwdriver to lever the split ring back on. Took me about 10 seconds to get it on. I was pretty pleased with myself. Haha
1st: Thanks for the video! Shimano doesn't believe in instructional manuals it seems. 2nd: I just received an original 13-tooth Nexus-sprocket today. It's not flat as your replacement, but raised to one side - so I guess it won't grind on any part of the hub. Now off to making my hands dirty... Thanks mate!
Thanks for this video. I have just made an replacement of the sprocket on my bicycle. The old sprocket has been on for about 12 years, and it was rusty. I simply could not get the sprocket off. Then I started to doubt this video, and I looked for some other explanations. But I could not find any. Then I used some lamp oil and started to use a large screwdriver and some other Tool against the body of the whistling, and after repeated pull all around the perimeter, the sprocket finally got Loose. I removed the rust in the area and supplied some grease to area too. A grove in the gasket had god some damage from the rust and movement, I think. Hopefully it will not leak Water to the gear.
Thanks for the video! I was lazy and didn't disconnect the gear cable before doing all this. One tip I have is to shift into the lowest gear as this will make re-assembley far easier.
Thanks for the helpful video. 12 years later I am thinking of installing a nexus-3 on a dirt-bike (it's weather proof I hear). I see that the original sprocket is moulded so that the teeth are further from the hub - the smaller new one is not. Wouldn't iit be good to put some gasket before installing the new sprocket? I get that the new sprocket acts as a seal to these parts covered with that shiny metal shield you need to take off?
I checked in the manual. It doesn't say that you can install less than a 16t sprocket by removing the seal. It seems that the minimum limit is 16t. But i agree with you!. Bike is yours and you should do what you need to do in order to enjoy your ride. I will probably follow your lead...
Hey thanks for the video! Irecently found a bike with one of these and i think it might be okay. I need to replace the dust cap and maybe a few other parts of the seal. I've been screwing around with it for a while but I think with what's in this video I can replace it. Only thing is that I can't get the mechanism to engage. But I suspect that it might be because I didn't align everything properly like showed in the beginning of the video. It didn't work when I found it either, I didn't take the wheel off and just replaced the shifter cable and installed and aligned everything. and it didn't work. So I hope it didn't get broken by the previous owner.. it looks ok to me. Anyway now that I know how to do this I'm gonna give it another go. let's hope I'm not missing any parts! Update: I got it all working again! The bike feels like it needs some lubrication but the gears work fine. I still might need to replace the dust cap. Thanks again!!!
Thank You! That is super helpful. I'm not too familiar with these hubs and didn't want to just take things off randomly. The colour dot system is pretty good though as I did that part intuitively already but was stumped by the plastic cover to the split ring. Can't you use a retaining spring tool or somesuch? I've got a cheap one that works with pins (most retaining strings have pins and holes though this doesn't) Anyway I will try it, otherwise use your screwdriver method. Thanks Again!
Great video! Do you know whether the metal shield is supposed to rotate when biking in relationship to the large plastic cap that’s underneath? It does in my hub and has now carved it’s way into the plastic cap.
I think indexed shifters for dérailleurs move the shifter cable equal length for each gear shift whereas the length the shift cable moves with each shift is slightly different for each gear in internal geared hubs. And, the length of cable per shift differs between models, Nexus 3, vs 7 vs 8 and brands Shimano vs Sturmey vs Sram.
im trying to see how the other side isd built up to the egggcorn nut man im trying to install a rag joint on it to use for my motor bike vid was great also tho
If you actually got a sprocket for a Sturmey-Archer internally geared hub, and not for something like a derailleur cassette, the spacing is identical to the Nexus, as you can see in this video, and as mentioned on the Internet elsewhere. However when I changed my sprocket it was quite tight getting the chain to go in. I think Shimano does not list less than 16T for this purpose, which is why dwkraus used a Sturmey-Archer, like quite a few others on the Internet have done.
I just wanted to point out that these nexus hub are very robust internaly but the only use three teeth engagement for the sprocket, instead of a 9 spline so perhapes a weak point for some motorized bikes? besides everything else.
Thanks, but I think discarding the dust seal is asking for trouble. A larger chain ring would do the same. There are lots of postings about these hubs failing d/t dirt and moisture.
hello i need your help plase, i have a Schwinn Delmar 24" Girls' Cruiser Bike, with 18t sprocket, but i want to change for more speeds, but my problem is for looking some speed casset compatible, because all lock with diferent. Just i want to change because my girl want riding more softly the collins, or just want to ride more easy. Do yo know how can i locking for the part. if i replace for 21t can help to ride easy?
is the indexing standard on these or is it completely different from one of the other standard indexed shifters? ..just wondering if i could use this hub with a common indexed shifter i have around.
It looks like you used a Sturmey Archer 14T sprocket. I tried that with my Nexus Inter-3 and the teeth don't match up with the chain. Am I missing something? Also, where can you get a Nexus 13T sprocket? The smallest I can find is 16T. Thanks!
Hi, Thank you for this beautiful video. I have a few questions. can a shimano CJ 7 S 20 be used on a 8 speed hub? Do you know the difference between a nexus 8 and nexus 8 red band.
Its 2023, nearly 2024... We need a modern 1080p video of this.
Thanks a lot for this video! I managed to replace the sprocket on my 7 geared Nexus to a smaller one. Now I don't look like a road runner when I go for a ride!

Thanks for posting this, it's spot-on. Watch that split ring folks its a bit tricky.

Thank, i have never managed it without this video.
Perfect. The bit about the circlip under the plastic cover is not entirely obvious on a grimy hub.
Great video, I've just replaced my sprocket while watching this :) Well, I had to pause it a few times :) Thanks a lot!
Thank you, I knew it was something like that, but I can now get on and give my Alfine 11 a good clean!

Yanks. Concise and clear. I needed a reminder

Tnxs for the vid. What difference will this make by changing to fewer tooths?
TrueFuSchnicken i wanted to know the same thing
Was very helpfull, even for Alfine 8 speed with Gates belt drive

Great video.....but what if i change my chainring to a bigger one and my rear sprocket to a smaller one will that make me go faster?
The applies for the 8speed Alfine hub as well. Top video thanks
Thank you for this very helpful tutorial! I think you can ease the whole thing a lot with a snap ring gripper :-)
Great video! Do you know whether the metal shield is supposed to rotate when biking in relationship to the large plastic cap that’s underneath? It does in my hub and has now carved it’s way into the plastic cap.
I found this very useful, thanks!
thanks man! thanks to you i got my bike working again!
Will it work if i use a snap ring plier instead of the 2 flat head screw drivers?
where to buy an 13T ? iam from europe and carnt find any shop. thx

vid was great also tho
Are the measurements the same for an 11 speed hub? that is 127mm with the boot?
thank you - very well explained
do you know if you could frankenstein a 27t alfine 6 groove sprocket by filing down 3 of the grooves?

where to buy an 13t for shimano nexus 8 ? iam from europe and carnt find an shop or dealer. thx
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
Thanks for the video man! What about if i change my chainring to a big one like a 52t? Will that give me more top speed?
Yes, a smaller sprocket on the hub and/or a larger chainring will provide higher speed at the same cadence.
cheers mate! Just what I needed! Great help
Thanks for the video. I made it with your help.
I recommend you invest in a a pair of circlip pliers, they make life much easier.

My nexus 3 disc started to drag when coasting, can't find PDF manual. Any help how to strip it down and grease it?

Speed modification?

tanks for the post, my breezer uptown is geared too low for my liking.
Very good! Thanks
cant see old one's wear differance to new one replaced
Does this change give you what? More speed?
Yes, but it makes pedaling harder.
Thanks dude i thought i needed (an?) tool or something. ....
