Ah, finally a ship again! Fun fact: the Zara class indeed had their main armament barrels quite close together. This was done so that they could share the same mounting, in order to save weight. The obvious downside of course was that one turret could only use the same elevation for both its guns.
Excellent and thorough review again Jason! 👍

Hi Jason, excellent review, Italian Zara class was a pinnacle of pre-ww2 heavy cruiser design, and beautiful ships. I'd love to build her one day. Thanks and have a great day, Dom

Thanks for the review. The model looks quite good with much more detail than Hobbyboss put in the sistership Pola. Apart from your comments I think Trumpeter is also failing to tell the period they depict the ship, certainly with such a remarkable paint scheme.

The paint scheme seems accurate to me.
The green hull, often mismatched by Trumpeteer is also probable as that kind of antifouling was produced by a plant near the Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico in Trieste.
The sister ships were all built by OTO, either in La Spezia or Livorno, so their hulls were probably the more common Red.
Having spent almost 2 years trying to get something useful out of the Hobby boss Pola, after testing the Zara, side by side, I can confidently say this ship is spot on. Really nothing needs to be modified, except some added detail here and there. I haven't the Fiume through, so I cannot really comment on how the individual ship was replicated compared to her sisters.
Kudos to Trumpeteer which built on the same standard then Roma.

Its not a ship I would build but nevertheless a very interesting First Impressions as always. You really have set the bench mark for reviews, nobody does them better in my opinion.

instructions are probably in an order to save paper. the main instruction is through the middle and what sub-assembly's they can fit in in the corners

yes the old White ensign sovereign took over are excellent, while I love enamels, using them on my Scharnhorst build at the moment. most don't use them anymore. the info is still good though

Thanks for the great review 👍🏻 I’ve never done a ship before - what would your recommendation be for a 1/350 ww2 ship that is accurately depicted and moulded. I don’t mind fiddly parts, pe etc - have enough time spent on detailing 1/72 aircraft 😀 - as I fancy doing one this year sometime. Thanks 🙏

I still think the most accurate 1/350 ship is the Trumpeter HMS Hood, there is a lot of resource info for that kit on the HMS Hood association website, they co-developed it with Trumpeter

Maybe it's an good idea to start with something small; a destroyer perhaps of an early war light cruiser (without lots of AA). Building large ships can be very demanding, so to say.
