Vittorio Veneto 1/350 Trumpeter: Building and Painting the Italian Battleship

  • Hi! Thanks for visiting the Channel!
In this video, i'm building the Trumpeter 1/350 scale warship Vittorio Veneto, a battleship of the Italian Regia Marina.
The kit is just great - if you are interested in ships, this is a nice piece to add to your collection, but experience is required because it isn't an easy build and especially painting can be challenging.
The total score should be 24/30, not 22, as stated in the video - i made some corrections after reflecting on the kit afterwards when comparing it to other ships i have built.

Great build, only one little mistake -Italian ships had a green lower hull.

Italian Destroyers wore red underwater.Camoflage varied very quickly with some ships having different looking sides.Google World of warships Italian hull colors. The variety was huge and seems to have changed quickly up to the "switch" when they were changed over to the allied paint schemes.

@@model-man7802 For destroyers, yes you are right, but the Veneto class - and as far as I know the other two battleships too- had green antifouling paint. The upper hull camo changed quite a few times, even the recognition strips. I have the Trumpeter 1:700 Roma, so I started to dig into the topic before I tackle the model. Look up PLASMO's modelling video on the Roma, he nailed the colours perfectly.

As Italian I can appreciate so much this model. However, the Vittorio Veneto had fore and aft those white red aerial reconnaissance stripes just until the Battle of Cape Matapan without any camouflage. The camouflage was applied the first time after the battle reparations in the early summer 1941... after that, the reconnaissance stripes remained only forward, till winter 1942, when they was completely removed.

Oh, thanks for the information! Now that you mention it, the paint scheme was somewhat confusing as they showed a solely grey hull with red and white strips fore and aft, and an alternative with only hull views, not from above, so i assumed they had it both. But it is a very beautiful ship design!

You'd think 1:350 scale models would be a bit more of separate parts to assemble. I highly dislike when the hull is one solid piece. With my 1:200 scale models of Bismarck, Hood and Scharnhorst you had to construct the entire hull oneself. keel plate assembled from 3 or 4 wooden parts, then install the wooden ribs, then first panelling, grinding smooth, filling gaps with putty, grinding smooth again, second panelling, grinding smooth, filling gaps with putty, grinding smooth again... So the entire hull was made of wood. The core of the super structure: made of several wooden parts, that were covered in photo-etched parts. All in all very little plastic. mostly wood, PE parts, other metal parts (steel and copper).
I mean, those 1:350 scale models are not that cheap. Why can't the manufacturer make the kits as e.g. Amati made the Bismarck, Hood and Scharnhorst in 1:200 (the models I built)?
But other than that, I enjoyed watching.

Vittorio Veneto had almost certainly a green hull, being built in Trieste. Only Littorio and Impero (unless the later had been dry docked in Trieste) Raf the Red Hull.

a very nice result. Only the white and red stripes are a bit lost. There is an old painter's trick. First white, then masking off and again with white over it, so that the gaps are closed. Then red.
