I moved back to the Charleston area 10 years ago. Property taxes are on par with property taxes in the Atlanta area.

It’s possible that South Carolina offers a property tax exemption for veterans who are 100% disabled. This exemption is applicable to the full fair market value of the primary residence of the veteran. To qualify, the disability must be service-related, and the veteran must be classified as totally and permanently disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
To apply for this exemption, the veteran needs to submit proof of their 100% disability rating from the Veterans Affairs office, along with any other required documents, to their local county tax assessor's office. It's a good idea to contact the local office for any specific requirements or procedures as these can vary by county.

Thanks Tracy! And in SC, anyone who is over the age of 65, totally and permanently disabled, or legally blind could qualify for the Homestead Exemption (an exemption of taxes on the first $50,000 in Fair Market Value of your Legal Residence).

On the primary residence how many months do you have to change over an out of state address/driver’s license to receive the primary rating

It depends when you close. Our tax bills come out in October and are due at the end of the year. We usually recommend filing by August to ensure the county has time to process the paperwork. Worst case scenario if you don't do it in time, you pay the 6% rate and can ask for a refund later.... but that's time-consuming, and no one ways to overpay... so it's better just to get everything you need ASAP after closing and file right away.

I moved in my new home in West Ashley and forgot to do my 4% exemption. I filed my paper work last month at the auditors office along with my 2 year refund. How long does it take to get the refund? Thank you in advance.

Oh bummer! I'm glad to hear you've filed now. You would have to ask the auditor's office for the timeline as I don't work for the county! Good luck!

In this specific example, yes. It could vary depending on what particular tax district you're in.

Was it Berkeley County? If so, I was having issues 2 days ago as well. The site must be having a temporary glitch! Check back in a few days. I've never had issues before now.

I tried all counties just to make sure and none of them would calculate.

@@mikep3459 That's odd. I just tried Charleston County's website to check and it worked for me, so don't know what's going on there. Sorry about that!

My mistake, it was for all the different districts for Berkeley county.

@@mikep3459Berkeley County isn't working for me either at the moment, their site must be having technical difficulties. Hopefully they'll get it resolved soon!
