I was born and raised in Charleston and it used to be the funnest place you could ever want to live in. Then around the late 80's, there was an influx of over-development, Rich folks buying up our grand old Mansions and demanding that law enforcement and rules change to they way they had it where they left from. Certain groups with money attempted to turn it into something like a "Disney Village" and HOA combined and the brass was polished right off the doorknobs of society there. There isn't a single place left for a natural born old salt to enjoy a cold beer and a smoke.
It wasn't the late 80s... I would say it was around 1998. When the Navy Base left, Charleston took a major hit. But as the 2000s came in to view, development saw an uptick because land and old houses were cheap. The addition of Boeing and Mercedes in the 2000s also started the trend of moving to Charleston. It used to be such a great town. The town now seems fake... too clean, too bright, too ugh. They've ripped the soul out of a great city.
I left Charleston after 35 years, it just got to big. I was tired of the traffic, noise, mean people etc. Moved to the other side of Ridgeville in the country and love life now. So peaceful.
For those of us who have grown up in this state and have seen more than a few Winters.... The traffic has become horrendous and is getting worse everyday mainly because of you transplants
I live in Dallas, but have lived all over the US, including Columbus, Ohio, as a teenager. I found the people to be very nice. I did not like the blizzard and snow. The thing you need to worry about is Californians. Since so many companies have relocated to the Dallas area, traffic has become unbearable. It is not the amount, it is how aggressive and mean people are. I have a cousin in Charleston and am thinking about moving to the area. Do not let your politicians give corporate incentives to relocate there. It is not worth it. You lose more than you gain.
Bill, thanks for the video. I went out to Hilton Head a few weeks ago. First time to the east coast. I fell in love with the scenery and the hospitality. Charleston looks like an area I could transfer for work. Plus being from New Mexico I’ve been infatuated with the ocean since I was a kid. Would like to talk to ya more I have some fundamental questions.
I'm from Charleston. I worked for Safelite for a couple years. It seemed like anyone that I serviced that wasn't from here, was from Ohio, no joke 😂. Or sometimes Virginia. But it's all love. ✌🏿
🌹💙 I was born and raised in the Deep South, imo your take on the dislike of Ohioans isn’t against people from Ohio per-se,’ it’s an anti-yankee sentiment in general. Lots of culture in the South and ancestral heritage. It’s in the blood-don’t take it personally. Blessings. 🙏
I think it’s more funny than anything. Whenever anyone complains and asks why so many people are here from Ohio, my only response is “when was the last time you vacationed in Ohio” and that’s usually the end of it. 😂
Our family has been vacationing on Hilton Head Island, SC since the mid 1980’s. When our sons were little, we would go to see Gregg Russell perform in Harbour Town. He does an excellent show that the kids love but most of the time during his show he would throw in an Ohio joke of some sort. So maybe goofing on Ohio is a South Carolina Low Country thing, not necessarily a Charleston thing.
I lived downtown on wentworth and then just across the connonnector in James Island. I worked on East Bay....took 10 min to get to work in the morning and well over an hour to get home at 5pm. This was in 2005. I moved there from VA...but the natives absolutely hate on people from Ohio
Most of us don't mind the people that come down but.... ut please keep this the place that made you want to move to. Dont bring your politics, impatience, driving habits etc with you. Leave them at the state line. We ggrew up here and love the place for what it is!!
As a retired insurance agent I would never buy property in a flood zone or in an area exposed to hurricanes. If you want property near water buy a home in proximity to a fresh water lake or river but far enough away from potential flooding. We lived in Greenville SC for 8 years. We love SC especially Charleston. Love visiting Charleston but don’t want to live there.
We are thinking about making charleston our home. We are going to becoming down checking out the area. We are looking for a wonderful home. This video was very helpful. Whatever else you can tell us about great schools. The best places to live. We do not want HOA Community My husband loves fishing.. We love water
People TRY and make snarky remarks, but if you have a good comeback it shuts them up. I usually tell them either “it wasn’t my choice to be from Ohio, that’s why I left” or if they ask why so many people are from there I say “when was the last time you vacationed in Ohio? Yeah, I wouldn’t want to go there and stay either!”
@@TheBillOlson Im from the UK, I got shit from people too. Most were okay. They are jealous and upset. One keyboard warrior said tourists need to spend there cash and f'off. He happened to work for the carriage tours downtown. He said he was upset about out of state people pushing up the prices of homes. It's pure jealousy and ignorance.
This is hilarious! There was an Ohio State tag on my used car and my principal said he was going to pry it off my car. We were in Raleigh, NC, lol! What did Ohio do?🤦🏾♀️🤣
I feel like a lot of cities hates Ohio. I have a friend from Jersey and they hate us Ohioans and I know someone from PA and they also hate Ohiaons. What did we do? lol.
That's all outsiders even me I'm from Sumter SC born and bred and still I'm not a local here in Charleston and it's mostly outsiders I think being this way not native chucktowners
We used to get a bunch of Ohioans but now its mostly people from the Northeast. What happened to the Ohioans? Maybe they're like us and can't stand New Yorkers either.
That sucks that people from my state treated you that way. As an Ohioan I feel like I’m a bit too nice and I’m also a people person, I’m nowhere near rude as the people you experienced here. Truth be told it’s a lot of cocky people here but that bad batch doesn’t speak for the rest of us Ohioans. I’ve actually met people from other states that hate Ohioans but they seem to get along perfectly fine with me.

My husband works for Boeing and he is being transferred down there from Washington State. We are hoping to buy a house next month (September 2023).

Those are big concerts but for indie bands I think chucktown is still good and one of the best towns to see bands
I’m also from Ohio and I’ll be relocating to Charleston, I’m 70/30 about moving but I’m still excited 🤘🏽
Let me know if I can help answer any questions!
Welcome!😃
Perhaps you should consider staying in Ohio
1/28/24 Viewing again; loved it!
Hey Bill, how are the finance jobs in downtown Charleston? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

What? OFF bug spray does keeps mosquitoes off.
But not the no-see-ums!
The Ohio hate is because they have a reputation for being extremely rude in SC. Not saying I agree with that.
Honestly, No one would choose Cleveland or Cincinnati over living in Charleston, S.C......and I live in Florida. Stop lying.
For sure, Ohio is the Capitol of SC!

Nope, but Charleston, S.C. is Capital compared to Pot hole Cincinasty. 😆
When you tell people you're from Ohio do you get a lot of bad responses ? when I was there I saw alot of car stickers saying " go back to Ohio "
The manager at my hotel I stayed at was from Ohio. He was called a yankee in front of me. He just said "we won the war"
