One of the most beautiful K5LA horns I've ever heard sing a tune! Pure nostalgia. The Eastern Kentucky Appalachian valley just makes this the icing on the cake.
The first couple years of K5LA production, AirChime applied a larger tag full of AirChime patent numbers. Apparently the tags even ended up on some K3H horns made during that period as well. The tag is larger than your typical Holden/AirChime tags and Nathan tags, hence "big tag" K5LA.
I have looked everywhere for a Chessie System "big tag" K5LA to no avail and I'm dying to have one, if anyone knows where I can find one for a decent price please let me know.
There is no base restrictor in the 5 bell, the 2 bell is un-bored and none of the bells are "flat-footed" (ie. all bells have o-ring grooves/not "corker" bells). For multiple reasons, I'm of the opinion that this horn was made late-78 or very early-79 at the latest.

A perfectly-tuned K5LA on a great locomotive! And the horn echo is astonishing! Could listen to that all day! Great capture.

That is just outstanding. The echo makes me drop my jaw in awe and amazement

That is probably the best k5LA in existence! So much better than the new amtrak k5las.
Those Nathan K5LA train horns, synonymous with Chessie System freight trains are currently available on Norfolk Southern and CSX freight trains
Awesome sounding K5LA, love the forest echo!
now that's a good sounding K5LA!
The scenery is as impressive as the horn.
Beautiful
This is how they all should sound!
So big tag just means that the manufacturer's tag is just larger? Thats what ive heard
Thats sooo coo, how a switcher like that could have a big leauge horn. lol

Personally, I think the "Big Tags", or K5LAs from tht time period, sounded better.
I think they sound way better.
Would this particular K5LA be from 1977? Seems like the 5 bell sits back in the chord which makes me think it might be base-restricted.
