    Such a beautiful-sounding horn. Rumor has it Florida Central's GP9RM 7033 down here is supposed to be getting an M3 horn soon!

    The chord that the p3 plays was meant to sounds exactly like the M3. Only the P3 was a whole lot more air efficient and less costly to maintain.

      How costly was the m3? It doesn’t really need new parts a ton of the time it seems.

      @@NorthEasternMotionProductions M horns were maintenance heavy. Cracked / warped diaphragms, cracked power chambers, seized back caps, worn seats, etc.

    • @NorthEasternMotionProductions
      @NorthEasternMotionProductions ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HybridBell they were also recommended to get maintenance every six months. Not an issue unless you use hundreds of the things. They’re not light either. The p horns, I must imagine, are light as a feather compared to the m’s

      @@NorthEasternMotionProductions Recommended maintenance vs what the railroads actually did were very different things though. Nobody wanted to work on those M horns given their temperamental nature, especially when there were hundreds of them in use back in the early days of diesels. The P's and K's were essentially an 'assemble and go' design. Self adjusting, and guaranteed to work as soon as assembled. The P horns have the added advantage of no metal on metal wear. If the rubber seat wears out, a new one can be ordered and installed. Theoretically P horns could work indefinitely.

      @@HybridBell yea that must’ve been a big advantage. Makes me wonder why so many m horns were sold, even when the p’s and k’s first came into play.

    @volvomantom I don't know for a fact, but I'm pretty sure this particular horn was manufactured some time in the '70s. Thanks for the comment!

    Didn’t Southern Railway 4501 operate on that railroad from 1948 to 1964?

    • @RailfanDude610

      It sure did. When 4501 operated on that railroad, it was renumbered to 12.
