      Its pretty simplistic. Its that way, because its a true martial art, meant to be used. Anyone with real-world personal combat experience, will tell you pretty much the same thing, about what fighting system to study - pick any martial art, pick a block a couple punches, a kick and maybe a takedown, that you can do in your current physical condition. Practice those a few thousand times and youll prevail in 99% of confrontations you encounter. It's less about what you do and more about how confidently and comfortably you do it.

      Not true about later in life, I have trained in & around NAHA-Okinawa, most +60 folks are just like me, they have trained MA their entire lives, and now search for the 'real MA', ppl in Okinawa, train into their 90's, even in China, and/or Thailand most 'masters' die +60 years of age, mostly booze, or just bad foods ( bad oils ); Given that all my master died +10 years ago I found myself wanting to 'learn more', having done virtually all styles, & systems from +5 years of age in LA, I went to ASIA in the first place +30 years ago to 'learn' real martial arts; IMHO 90% of the foreigners in okinawa are life-long karate people who want to fine tune, when you enter the schools you must wear a white belt, as nobody in most western schools 'earns' a black-belt, they just buy them for 6 months simple training; So when you see these old white-belts on these okinawa videos it doesn't mean they are new to MA, it just means they enter this school with an 'empty cup'; I only trained karate 5-15 years of age in LA and thought it was 100% BS, and drifted to tae-kwon-do, and later escrima, chinese MA, jiu-jitsu, aikido only in recent decade given that all my masters dropped dead did I venture into okinawa to find a karate with chinese internal methods ( bagwa, xingyi ) as I have been studying +30 years;

    It’s very enlightened of the Master, to show the block as an actual striking weapon and to strike off of the blocking arm.This block, then punch, with the opposite hand chambered at the hip baloney, is why so many karate people often have their “lunch eaten” by western boxers. Boxers parry and slip, bob and weave as they move in towards an attack as well as away from an attack.

    Excellent video! I train Shotokan style sine many years but nonetheless learnt new nuances. It is REALLY important to look at different Karate styles but also other martial arts and fighting sports. Then go with Bruce Lee's maxim use what you can, discard the rest. Be mindful that the categories of useful and useless can change over time, depending on your levels of physical strength and flexibility as well as experience.

    • @GeorgeLimaaa
      @GeorgeLimaaa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, in shorin-ryu we follow the Ashi-Kochi-Te principle, so the hips move before the arms. Higher level practitioners can work on reducing the time between these movements to make them go almost simultaneously, therefore combing technique and velocity.

    But in a room, fighting for life and death, this old guy is probably one the last ones, I would choose to stand in front of me.
    He will come very close, very fast, and your bones will crack .... no points, no judge, no tapping out.

    • @jesusninja2401
      @jesusninja2401 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Agreed. Most people don't realize the true power of "real" martial arts. All traditional martial arts include Iron body, Iron palm, conditioning with mind set of killing/knock out with one hit. As you said no points, no judges, no tapping out. The enemy won't care if you tap, he will continue until you are down or dead. And he or they might have knives or other weapons. A true martial art is about life and death, not money, or fame.

      Shor-In is okinawin for shao-lin ( as in kung-fu ), karate 100 years ago in okinawa when they created the word meant 'chinese hands', when japan occupied okinawa leading up to WW2 they renamed karate to 'empty hands' to appease the japanese GOV; IMHO all the linear crap seen in Tokyo, and West, not much different than tae-kwon-do is just Post WW2 GOV approved MA meant to make it a sport and not a combat (killing) art; During WW2 the Jap's would kill okinawa people if they didn't speak japanese; They had always traded with chinese ( fuzhou port to naha ); Tokyo didn't trust any okinawan who couldn't speak japanese; For 100's of years okinawan people were not allowed to own 'weapons', so they perfected the art of killing with their bare hands;

    The problem ALL traditional karate styles have is....NO ONE attacks you in a traditional karate style way (lunge punch, reverse punch) so most (not all) of these blocks DO NOT work on the street. Try to block a roundhouse right with a rising block!!! You will get hit in the SIDE of your face as the punch goes AROUND your block! The best block is simply to not be there.

    We dont do big blocks. Blocks this mig legs for 20 minutes ij a drill. That down block is literally useless ij a real fight.

      Ask Michael Jordan’s why he practice jump shots and free throws all the time in his prime, it’s all about the basics, everything comes from that, I know you not going to really understand or care, the basics can save your life if they are second nature........why do people always put everything down, peace, been practicing 40 yrs, and everything means something that very important

      Sensei today starts with Tai Sabaki (70% black belts present). After 10 minutes or so: "I want to do Kihon Kata 1 with you today, but you first have to get these turns down!" ... So more turns and basics. 😂😂😂😂
