      I also agree. Nick's topics are always interesting, his commentary and images are always informative and entertaining. No matter what Nick's personal opinions are he rarely allows them to be known or show in the direction of his material. Great content and a great personality have made this channel the success it is.

    • @jamiemcgarry6414
      @jamiemcgarry6414 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Kidney and or liver failure is *not* by any means a common outcome for professional bodybuilders. For those unfortunate enough to have such drastic outcomes, yea I'd say death is one form of retirement. But going bald is reversible and testicular atrophy doesnt even need to happen at all and most likely doesnt with professional bodybuilders. The completely safe drug called HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, completely reverses such atrophy as well as maintains fertility while on exogenous testosterone.

      CORY BROMWICH I think you and the guy who commented below miss the point of life. He did what he loved up until the point he could no longer do it. Living a mundane life isn’t for everyone. “Live while you’re alive” is something I think we all forget to do. Doing what he loved cost a lot, but I bet he still would do it over again. It’s just like any other goal.. people get hungry for what they want in life, and they may end up broke, dead, ect. pursuing it, but I bet they had a hell of a life.

    The steroid use, for many others, resulted in death. Some featured here such as Flex had to have organ replacements. Natural bodybuilding may result in smaller muscles but is obviously far healthier in the long run. Steroids is a Faustian deal.

      No such thing as natural bodybuilding. It's very rare when someone is into competitive bodybuilding and is clean and always was clean. Even on the natural bodybuilding competitions most of the guys take all kinds of shit during their training, they just know when to stop so it doesn't show up when they test them.

      Agreed. Natural guys look terrible and they never keep the tiny gains, if any, that they get either. I see guys working hard for months and even years, but getting nowhere. Truth is I see guys on steroids who don’t make gains. Steroids are not magic. You still have to be on point with diet and workout or you won’t see anything regardless.

      Ruiji San , I remember back in the eighties pullovers and something called breathing-squats we’re fairly popular in an effort to expand the rib cage. Guys used to hit their side-chest with their ribs up, to accentuate the overall size, I guess.

      You can’t expand your rib cage. Either you have a large rib cage or you don’t. It’s decided by genetics. You can do all the pullovers you want. Won’t make a difference. I would imagine it’s a positive for bodybuilding tho. Look at Arnold. Gives that tapered appearance

Just because they are not in shape anymore now that they're old? Most of them still outearned my (and propably your) ass by a long shot. Will they die sooner? Propably. I was a teen in the early 90s and idolized pro bodybuilders at the time. I bought Muscle and Fitness every month and had their pictures plastered all over my bedroom wall as inspiration. At a certain point in my early 20s I lost interest in following pro bodybuilding and stopped and for years never gave much thought about these guys I use to idolize. A few years ago my curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see what these guys were up to currently and how they looked. I was shocked to find out many of them were dead and many others had serious health issues (e.g. kidney transplant). There is a pretty long list of pro bodybuilders from the 90's and early 2000's who died in their 30's and 40's, some even in their 20's. When I first started reading M&F there would be pretty regular articles claiming that most pro bodybuilders were steroid free and only a few bad apples. They would get offended and defensive when anyone would suggest otherwise. Of course being a naive teen I believed it for several years. What arrogance to print articles that they knew were complete bull shit.

    my two cents as someone who trained naturally for 22 years, juiced for 5 and then came off. I have noticed that bodybuilders who have a couple decades of natural base before they juice can reactivate their former physique with minimal test cyp. I hadn't touched a weight from 43-53 and was feeling sluggish, low sex drive, etc.. so my doctor checked and it was 131. not good. he put me on 200mg test cyp per week and immediately half my old physique jumped back on me without touching a weight. I attribute this to muscle memory in the presence of sufficient testosterone. I would love to do some moderate training but I await lumbar back surgery and right knee surgery. I would appreciate suggestions of upper body work that won't harm my back further. thanks.

    Great topic to cover Nick. I think of all the sports bodybuilding must be one of the hardest to come out of when it's time to retire. All that sacrifice and identifying with your body has to change as you are no longer competing. And as it's at a much younger age than say the average worker who retires after age 60, retirement must be pretty daunting for a bodybuilder too. Some have been successful in marketing supplements, running gyms under their names where I know for so many it must be a struggle. I think Dorian Yates has made one of the most successful, if not most interesting retirements with his focus turning towards meditation, yoga and functional fitness. Thanks for sharing.

They dont compete anymore so they dont have the same motivation to put all that juice in their bodies, neither the competetive environment to push themselves through insane workouts to stimulate muscle growth.
    And dont forget the age of their retirement, 35-45 y.
    Others simply lose the interest.

    Great topic, very interesting and a reality check for folks who are pushing themselves and their health. All of those fellas who had to drop out for health reasons are lucky to be able to tell the tale. We all know about the guys who didn't get the opportunity to make changes and live new lives. What's a little shocking to me is the ones who have dropped competitive bodybuilding but also appear to have dropped fitness completely. I guess maybe it speaks to two things; first it goes to show that bodybuilding has nothing to do with health and fitness and second it maybe speaks of the minds of competitive athletes. Are these people so competitive that they have an all or nothing mindset? Can they not workout to simply stay fit and healthy? It's kinda crazy but entirely believable to me because we humans are strange frickin' animals. Terrific video Nick! ...........................PEACE!!

      Sorry muscle is muscle there isnt steroid muscle... if you did a biopsy you would only see identical muscle. Steroids just allow you to go past your natural limit if you take enough. But once you stop taking them you will go back to your natural limit based on your hormonal levels. The cases you see where you think they lost all there roid muscle is actually true about anyone that stops working out and eats like shit. Muscle is only lost due to hormone levels or nutrition. Someone under weight or extreme case of muscle atrophy could benefit from steroids the under weight person could be brought up to his healthy weight in muscle mass fast and then be takin off the steroids and he would not lose any of his gains as long as he ate enough.
