    Good video, I'm a French Press guy every day but have considered getting an AeroPress for traveling. Also, an FYI... the word "tare" is pronounced like "there" or "pair", not "tah-rey". Good luck with the future videos.

      Not really, tare comes from Italian 'tara' which comes from arabic 'ṭarḥa'. Both of those are pronounced 'tar ah' like para so 'tar' is more correct than 'tahrey' which is more correct than 'tear'

    Thanks for the tutorial. Having a french press at home, I am thinking of purchasing an aeropress. The dilemma was exactly in the difference between these two devices, since both seem to be equal due to the identical principles of function. Thanks again!

    I've kind of replaced my French press with a Clever. All the ease of immersion, but the easy clean up of a filter. Though as it draws down, I guess that makes it more like the Aeropress...?

      I use the clever as well. Clean cup but with good flavor.

      I was surprised to find out how many clever users there were. I think we need to do a video about it at some point! Maybe comparing it to the aeropress.

      I use both the Clever and the Hario switch. Was a long time French press user, but I prefer the lack of grit that the steep and release methods produce AND easy of clean up. The biggest issue that I have with the Clever/Switch is the limited volume. Since I'm the only coffee drinker in the family, it's not really an issue in my case. As for a travel solution, it's Aeropress all day long. Excellent compact design, easy clean up, great extraction and no grit. Again, downside is size, but still not an issue for me. I'm able to brew about 220 mls of coffee, more than enough to kick start my day. If I really need to brew a big pot, I'll either go with a large auto-drip machine, or I have a Bodum Santos vacuum brewer that also produces great coffee. Another method that works well is to steep in a large carafe, stir to settle most of the grounds, then filter through something like a V60. Basically a Clever style brew without the Clever.

    AeroPress is much neater. I have tried both. Cleaning after making a french-press coffee is more a chore. Mess is easier to handle for AeroPress.
    -----------And yes, you did finally say about this same, about six and a half minutes into the video.

    I disagree about the grind size for the French press, I use a relatively fine grind size and got good results, not bitter at all.
    I use the hoffmann technique and so far I'm pretty happy with it, I may buy an aeropress sometime but I'm not a fan of hot water in contact with plastic.

    • @thestudio.coffee
      @thestudio.coffee  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm curious how fine are you going? I'd like to try.
      I've tried finer grinds and my issue isn't so much the bitterness (which can be cured with a faster brew), it's that the flavours get a bit muddied.

      Good video though. I'll give it a thumbs up as penance for my pettiness.

  • @makshima8545
    @makshima8545 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The press size you use should match the amount you plan to brew. The problem with using a large French press to brew a small quantity is that the area between the screen and the base of the carafe is designed to hold a fixed amount of coffee grounds. If you try to brew a smaller amount than the press is designed for, you end up leaving a lot of brewed coffee behind with the spent grounds.

    • @thestudio.coffee
      @thestudio.coffee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also a very good point Mak. Which means you need a number of different sizes laying around home.

    I like immersion because it's pretty foolproof and because I like a long steep time to get all the goodness out of those beans. But I am not a fan of sludge in my cup. So I basically combine both methods. In a small covered saucepan I bring the measured amount of water to a boil, While it's coming to a boil, I grind the beans. When water it at a full boil, I turn off the heat (gas), take the lid off, dump in the ground coffee, put the lid back on, and set the timer for 6 minutes. While it's steeping, I put water in the cup I'll use for the finished coffee, put it in the microwave to get it hot, then pour that hot water thru the aeropress and let it drain into that cup. This preheats the aeropress and the cup. Just before the 6 minute mark on the timer, I dump the heater water out of the cup, then when the timer goes off, I use the aeropress to filter the brew that's been steeping in the saucepan. So I'm basically using the aeropress as a filter for my steeped coffee. I like the aeropress for this rather than a pour over filter because I can reuse the aero filter a few times, and I can also use the plunger to push the coffee thru the filter fairly quickly so the brew is still quite hot when it's all in the cup.

    The level of grind that gives ME a good brew result (not weak) for using AeroPress is fine, or finely ground. Otherwise, brew is too weak.

      French Press is for more whole brew than "right now" It seems like it would be a better choice than the Moka Pot or Keurig. I'm considering AP if I am outta French Press brew decaf so I don't exhaust My instant. I cold brew mine btw. I have No grounds in My filtration system but there is sludge which settles to the bottom of storage containers.

    Really solid video. Would love to see more like this. Some criticisms I have:
    The biggest one: Audio. The room you're in is super echo-y and you can fix that by literally littering giant foam tiles behind the camera to at least help mitigate it. You also need to have a better EQ if you don't have one already. To be specific, the highs are louder compared to everything else and it becomes harsh to listen to after a few minutes.
    Don't be afraid to make cuts. You can still have the shot of you talking into the camera but for these kinds of videos a cut where you keep the same angle makes it that much clearer for the audience that you're ending a phrase and in a metaphorical sense, taking a breath.
