@@scottmacconnell592 I was once watching an animated show and I was like, wow this is a pretty good fun show and it’s got some queer representation (the female main character has a crush on a girl)! But it only had one season so when I googled it to find out why, I was informed that it got cancelled because the woman who created it was a p€do and I was like “yeah good call, don’t let this creep keep making children’s content, or any content for that matter”. I was still kinda disappointed that a good show was cancelled, but I would’ve been upset if they hadn’t, especially because a creep in that position has the power to but some dangerous messages into kids minds, even more so when they show itself centered around a child going through puberty and that opens to door for creeps to sneak in all kinds of worrying things
It is BEYOND fcked up to see such an inspirational man turning out to be a HORRIBLE man. As someone who admired him and his books, this was a huge shock and disappointment to see…
I will say if someone almost seems perfect. Then they are the one with the darkest secrets. Not to say all seemingly good person is actually bad. Good example that’s not him. My friends always told me how I’m “always happy” while in reality I was going to therapy for ptsd and was going through a lot of dark stuff at home. Long story short. You never really know someone if you don’t know how flawed they are. Because everyone has flaws
@@layladavis02 Gaiman is actually a perfect example of someone "seems almost perfect, but is hiding a dark secret." He seemed so perfect to his Tumblr-using fanbase precisely BECAUSE he was on Tumblr, reading their posts and learning what they wanted to hear. He convinced them he was good by simply repeating whatever the "correct" opinions at the time were. Someone who is actually good will occasionally break from popular opinions, even if just accidentally. A bad person will carefully curate their public image and never break from what they think others want to hear.
There is another level of hell in this. It's called, he said because he's autistic, this is why he had "trouble" reading signals from women to which, autistic people all recoiled and had massive words to say. Because he was in a long line of authors this year that sold out other NDs, making NDs like me feel sick that people would be so quick to perpetuate stereotypes about us as a defense for their indefensible. There is another podcast besides Tortise that covered the story. But the replies, etc make me feel a really huge welt of anger. First that he did it at all, second that he gaslit these women, and then the clear power differentials, and lastly his excuse of "But I'm autistic." selling out other autistic people.
not to mention how he's been blaming his autism for 'not understanding social cues' aka ignoring the lack of consent/obvious signs of nonconsent by these women and many others
this would be a semi-ok answer if he did it ONCE. it wouldn't be an excuse but it would explain the reason. but he did it multiple times so it can't be a mistake anymore cuz like come on...
Yeah I don't get social cues but I've never misinterpreted them to the point I get in the shower with someone I've just met and pressure them to cuddle me 🫠. It's actually me not picking up that my mum is hinting for me to stop talking about Chernobyl again

When it first came out it was so frustrating because so many people were dismissing it because the news was broken by TERFs (which are absolutely shitty and I don't deny that). I felt like I was going crazy because I was horrified by it. It felt like the only people actually talking about it and taking it seriously were people in fan communities about his works.
I never really payed much attention at Neil himself but it was really saddening how it affected so many people in the Good Omens fandom around me and I can also assume in others as well. I just hope everyone is doing well since then

It was awful. It is awful. I mean, the whole situation is just so upsetting! Other fans and creators have found information on the status of the "paused" third and final GO season and basically, a couple of months ago, it was a given that S3 had been cancelled. All people who worked on it had been released from their contracts. It's a miracle we can still have 90’

I'm a woman in my mid twenties. I grew up on Neil Gayman's books, dreamt of meeting him someday to ask for some writing advice or whatever... and now I know that this man would probably use my admiration for him to his advantage
As someone who found Gaiman’s work as a place of comfort when I was in middle school and highschool, I am disappointed. His work really made me feel like I wasn’t a weirdo because I liked things that not a lot of other people like (the occult, gothic literature, etc.). He really inspired me to be an artist. He is not at all saying this, of course, but as a lesbian, I just want to remind everybody that it's OK if you have been with a ton of men or have never been with a woman or just figured out you were a lesbian even though you were in your 30s or whatever. Thank you for bringing this situation to light while big new outlets will not. Love your videos!!
one thing that always fucked w my head was in the Sandman script notes, neil gaiman wrote that he modeled Calliope's abuser's workspace after his own. a rapists workspace after... your own? interesting
I was thinking of Calliope since the allegations came out 😢 is sadly telling isn't it. I can't stop thinking he had some urge to confess something about himself now
Yes I have been a fan of his works for a long time. He enjoys his protagonist being a big hero, but his villains, and the things done to women made me not very surprised unfortunately.
I think if people who do this out of alleged "misunderstanding of signals" truly feel bad, they should prove it by making a public fucking apology. That way other people can know to make things abundantly clear because they know they have to either be very careful with this person or they have to run away from them as fast as they can. But they don't truly feel bad, it's just something they say to avoid consequences. I had a bad (traumatic) experience with this guy from university, I was high, I was drunk (both for the first time), I made a mistake and feeling that I couldn't go back on that mistake, I just let things happen, becauseI figured he was tipsy as well, so he probably wasn't in his right mind either. I had nightmares, I needed therapy, I still have flashbacks. I honestly blame myself for dismissing his joke of "No means yes, and yes means yes". So if you're reading this and someone makes that kind of joke to you, RUN. It's not really a joke, they actually think that.
I heard about this months ago when it first came out and spread on tumblr. I'm glad more people are becoming aware of this now. As much as I wish for this to not be true, the fact that nothing has been done about it and that it has been kept very, very quiet does not bode well at all. He has written so many wonderful things, so many compassionate things, and has spoken out in such favor of the MeToo movement and women's rights and #believeallwomen. It is clear to me that that was nothing more than a front. A terrible lie. I hope these women get justice, if what is alleged is true.
It’s really frustrating since he was openly pro-trans and he’s been outed as an ‘alleged’ sexual predator so transphobes have ammunition to use to try and manipulate unsuspecting people into believing that all trans people are predators and that supporting trans rights is somehow a sign of being a predator simply because of Gaiman existing.
When this initially came out on social media, I saw a lot of women say that Neil Gaiman had flirted with them at cons when they were very young, barely legal type age. There are definitely more stories
Anyone else remember when he defended lolicon and wrote a story about snow white being a 6 year old vampire who. rapes her dad. SHES SIX YEARS OLD. Theres also necrophilia on top of the misogyny, pedophilia, and incest in that story.
Every film and series "belongs" to hundreds of creatives. Besides, Terry wrote the bulk of the book and came up with the ending, yet un-filmed, more than 20 years ago.
Why? Because when you have power, you are disillusioned to believe everyone else is beneath you and that you can do/take what you want, especially for those who are questionable to begin with. Take a person who is corrupt or corruptible, add a sense of power and you get this.
It’s such a shame he came to my city last year and I was SO excited I took photos for the paper I wrote an entire article about him I loved that guy he wrote sm stories that defined my childhood and taste in literature. This dude’s WACK. My heart goes out to anyone affected by him.
If anyone wants a deeper dive into this, Vera from council of geeks did a couple of videos on this as well as one on all the Gaiman shows and movies that were affected (Be warned they're like 2hrs each) Allegations Pt 1: th-cam.com/video/5xmeEXDFM8I/w-d-xo.html Pt 2: th-cam.com/video/P60gfp4VBQQ/w-d-xo.html Gaiman projects th-cam.com/video/b1-cbRfjTJQ/w-d-xo.html I think these videos are really useful for anyone wanting to explore the issue further as she breaks the podcast down episode by episode, as well as the issues with tortoise's reporting and Gaiman's pattern of behaviour.
I agree I'm surprised this isn't being talked about more. I've been waiting for more mainstream coverage ever since I was made aware of it. I haven't listened to the tortoise podcast yet because I know I won't like what I hear, but I know I do need to listen to it. This video was the first time I heard the phone recording... It gave me suck an icky feeling. He sounded so sincere at the start, not quite apologetic, but like he actually didn't think/know anything was wrong. And then the payoff suggestion was just so gross. Like you said, even if he truly believes he did zero wrong, thats still a problem because he clearly did wrong and is trying to throw money at it to make it go away. Good Omens has been my favorite book for years and years, and now it's also my favorite TV show of all time. I was heartbroken and angered to learn that Neil is just another sleaze ball.
Idk why but imagining a 61 y/o man doing BDSM is funny to me "Call me master" **Bone popping out of place sound** "OH SH!T MY HIP" "Ahhhh call 911 call 911!" (My humor is broken😭)
I'm hoping my far healthier lifestyle will put me in much better shape by the time I'm 61 y.o. (which will be in early 052) than 61 y.o.s in the 990s who were generally born in the 930s.
first heard about the allegations MONTHS ago on tumblr and how neil had been like. reacting to the allegations. I unfollowed neil and haven't really heard anything else about it since
about his ex-wife, bc it wasn't mentioned in the video: Amanda Palmer isn't really a "feminist". After the allegations came out, I finally understood why Neil and Amanda were married. Amanda was on a tour (payed with Patreon) and only paid the musicians with "hugs and beer". the thing is, the album was crowdfunded and the went on tour, bc she made A LOT of money. She also had a song, where she screamed the N-Word. No, it doesn't make sense in context. she just did it to be edgy and pretended she didn't know it was wrong to use it. Now I am just gonna name !some! of the bad things Amanda did: faked a su*cide and recorded the reaction of the current boyfriend to later use it in an album; kicked someone in front of the crowd, which made them disabled; blatantly ableist (Dresden doll as a freak show with conjoined twins, yes very funny, (/i) -> also generally objectiveing and fetishizing disabled people); creating an unsafe space for BiPoc+: she did not only used the n-word in songs, but also casually used it at performances; wrote a poem about mas*urbating while kids probably saw her through the window (I hope I disremember this, I really really do); she harassed some (female) journalist, bc she wasn't covered enough by them in spite of her openly talking about miscarriages; AND SO MUCH FCKING MORE I was a big Amanda palmer fan as a young teen (12-14 years), which was 10 years ago. Every time I hear something new about AP, I still get surprised (bc like wtf). Oh, and fck ND. I loved his media, Good Omens (even though it's only Terrys work, I know :)), Doctor Who, and so many more. F*ck men. F*ck privelged people who abuse their power. Thanks Louis for this video. It's really strange how silent the controversy is. also: here's the obligatory "sry for my English, this is my third language" addition you were looking for
I've been dismissive, dismayed, disappointed and ultimately disgusted by all this. As a longtime NG fan, when I first heard about these allegations, I thought they were wrong...no, 'Neil' couldn't have done this. To make things fair though, I actually listened to the podcasts and came away feeling grubby. It was when I heard a tearful Caroline talking about how Gaiman would effectively make her and her kids homeless if she didn't perform for him, that years of putting this guy on a pedestal collapsed. As someone on the spectrum too, how dare he try to justify his own autism as an excuse for such behaviour?? I'm amazed that more people don't know about all this, so thanks for putting it out there. There are still fans of his that want to brush this under the carpet or act like he's untouchable because of his (undoubted) talent...and he shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. Even without the SA element, it's still a blatant abuse of power. Innocent until proven guilty yes, but what I've heard/learned so far has put me off the man forever.
thank you for talking about this. I have been a huge fan of Gaiman's work for years, and i was so disappointed when i heard the allegations and how no one was talking about it.
Thank you. I have been holding my breath with this for a long while, now, hoping it wasn't true, it being a "their word against his" sitch... But that audio... He *can't* deny this any more, that's *evidence* and that means he's *guilty* ... I'm heart-broken... I want to cry... My entire world feels like it's completely changed... I literally listen to his audio books - read by him - *several times a week* and I've seen the Stardust movie *hundreds of times* ... He's just such a big part of my life... And now I... I just... I can't... Neil Gaiman's 'Stardust' *literally saved my life* (I tried to end my existence, but I wanted to "go out" while listening to my favourite book, so I put it on while I was "feeling myself fade", but the beauty of the book's themes of true love made me regret my decision, so I called the ambulance). I don't think I can ever listen to that - or any other of his - audio book ever again, watch his films again, read his books again... Oh, jeese, he even wrote my second favourite ever episode of Doctor Who, 'The Doctor's Wife' (the one where the TARDIS' soul gets stuck inside a human's body). I know some people can "separate the art and the artist" (case-in-point, Harry Potter fans who can't stand JKR's transphobia and racism, but still enjoy the franchise), but not me. This will *always* be in the back of my mind, now... I must thank you for this video. I've read lots of articles about this, watched other videos about this, but none have shared the *evidence* and so I was still in denial... And as much as I kinda wish I'd stayed in ignorance - or, better, that there was no evidence, or that he was innocent - but I don't want to live a lie, so although this hurts me to my very *core* , it is better to know the truth.
Reading stories like this breaks my heart. I hope you're doing OK and better now. Hopefully in time you can find new works of fiction that inspire you just as much as Gaiman's did ❤️
Thank you so much for talking about this. It's felt like so few people are paying attention to this and as someone who used to love his work and him as an author, I was horrified when I learned this and it felt like so many people just weren't.

Good news for Coraline enjoyers (imo) The movie is significantly different from the book. That's how I'm gonna allow myself to like Coraline (the film) and condemn Neil -predator- Gaiman
Like, Henry Selick wrote the screenplay for the film Coraline. Neil gets the very bare credit of writing the book that inspired that movie, but Neil Gaiman did not write the story or build the world of that movie. In part this is coming from a place of comparison between Coraline, and actual Neil Gaiman movies like Mirrormask (labyrinth but shittier) or Stardust (the subplot in the Narnia books where a star fell from the sky and became a girl, but shittier)
I haven't watched this but I have to tell you, the sandman is by far my FAVOURITE comic ever. I love this writer and seeing from the thumbnail... I'm already tweaking out that my favourite writer is a ALSO A BAD PERSON
I'm a really big Good Omens fan. I found the book and it genuinely changed my life. When I found this out, I went into a really bad state of mind and got really crappy for a bit. I was devastated. I actually own like 10 of his books AND a signed copy of Good Omens. So a few days later as a form of coping, I taped Miku's name over his on ever book, and on the GO scriptbook I traced her and put in over his face. my mom asked me if it was messed up when she saw me taping them, and I looked up at her and when "yes" and went back to taping them all

So, first off, this is *not a defence* of Gaiman, in any way. I'm not going to, he doesn't deserve it. But I think the problems with this situation, group of situations, is both regional (largely happening to either New Zealanders when he was living in New Zealand, or English women, when he was living in England), and a rather thorny ethics problem. Namely: SA is bad at any age, even removing the age gap, but also, all the women involved were tacitly over the age of majority in their countries of origin. So I think detectives are struggling to find solid, prosecutable footing. What I'm finding more disturbing is all these women were assistants, if I recall, either working with Neil Gaiman while on tour internationally or in single countries, or were hired as babysitters when Amanda Palmer's son, Ash, was very young. So removing every other starry-eyed fan factor, which I'm sure DID play into things--what you have, simply and clearly, is an older man of wealth and prestige showing interest in a younger woman who may *need* that job in all seriousness to make rent. This is where the uneven power dynamic comes in, and we're not even throwing in the BDSM angle, which gums up all the works. So--was Scarlet the first to report SA from Gaiman? Because even she reported it at least one year, if not more years, out. And while more women coming forward makes it more disturbing, some of these stories may have "aged out", so to speak. At least in terms of NZ and English law, I have no clear idea how SA gets treated there. But if I'm right, the problem becomes one of length of time FROM original incident, and who's still covered by law. That might be why detectives are taking their time to put together a solid case.
It's beyond disgusting to me how much and how often people try to sweep s.a under the rug. I've been fighting tooth and nail for like 3 years to put my child's *buser behind bars. Preds should be ostracized

It’s a shame to see my childhood hero turn out to be a creep :(

I was thinking of Calliope since the allegations came out 😢 is sadly telling isn't it. I can't stop thinking he had some urge to confess something about himself now
Yes I have been a fan of his works for a long time. He enjoys his protagonist being a big hero, but his villains, and the things done to women made me not very surprised unfortunately.
i dont think ive seen any commentary channel talk about neil freakman, thank you louis
Also careful with the abelist "freak", but yeah he is ignorant and/or using excuses and not just disabled, if any?
Theres also necrophilia on top of the misogyny, pedophilia, and incest in that story.

about his ex-wife, bc it wasn't mentioned in the video: Amanda Palmer isn't really a "feminist". Now I am just gonna name !some! of the bad things Amanda did: faked a su*cide and recorded the reaction of the current boyfriend to later use it in an album; kicked someone in front of the crowd, which made them disabled; blatantly ableist (Dresden doll as a freak show with conjoined twins, yes very funny, (/i) -> also generally objectiveing and fetishizing disabled people); creating an unsafe space for BiPoc+: she did not only used the n-word in songs, but also casually used it at performances; wrote a poem about mas*urbating while kids probably saw her through the window (I hope I disremember this, I really really do); she harassed some (female) journalist, bc she wasn't covered enough by them in spite of her openly talking about miscarriages; AND SO MUCH FCKING MORE

Sure. But most of his "art" is shit, too.
@LeadersInDisguise I haven't read it, so I wouldn't know
No don't. Gaiman's writing is an expression of his own personal ideology. He's an evil man, and so his writing is also evil. I advise you to avoid it.
As a huge good omens fan. I am incredibly disappointed and disgusted.
It was mostly Terry's work, and his memory shouldn't be pissed on because his friend who contributed to it is a d-bag.
Everyone: Oh what a shock, a rich and powerful man uses misogyny, rap€ culture and fame to abuse vulnerable people, it's only like the 578th just this year.
Meanwhile, Tortoise media: I can't believe BTSM did this.
as a dead boy detectives fan this is so disappointing :'/
I really appreciate that people are starting to talk about this more. I’d seen that allegations had been made, but that was months ago and I haven’t been aware of anything since.
I literally can’t idolise anyone anymore . why is there always a new celebrity getting exposed for this kind of stuff. I don’t know what component in fame and wealth makes them think this is acceptable. absolutely disgusting. and now the last season of my favourite show for the last 5 years is being cancelled.
I’m animating and then I get a notification for this
I actually started cleaning my three month depression pit room because of your outros ngl! And it di/does make me feel better!
I loved the angle of Louis in this video it felt more real and natural of him sitting closer
Im so glad he didnt have anything to do with one of my favorite books/shows Good Omens by Terry Prachet and no one else
GODLY TIMING, JS GOT HOME FROM SCHOOL 🔥🔥🔥
SAME 🔥🔥🔥
Please don’t let this completely erase why we should’ve already thought he was a dickhead. He completely destroyed Norse history with his stupid little fanfiction. I have hated him MY ENTIRE LIFE, being raised in a Norse Pagan household. I have been Norse Pagan since I was born 24 years ago, so this isn’t some weird teenager fad, this is the religion my family practices and has practiced for many generations. He destroyed the public perception of the religion and caused so many misconceptions that I am frequently told I am wrong when talking about MY OWN RELIGION. It is absolutely worse that he is an abuser, I am not trying to overshadow that, but his destruction of an entire religion’s public perception should have been being talked about for years.
How so?
How? (Not trying to be rude btw I just wanna know)
you’re kind of fucking insane for equating this to sexual assault, especially when every religion is referenced/warped thru media get over yourself. these women suffered the worst possible violation and this is what you think doesn’t deserve to be overshadowed? listen to yourself
How?
Norse pagans try no to make everything about yourselves challenge: impossible
saw this stuff a few months ago, disappointed but not surprised that it's not bigger news
FINALLY MORE PPL TALKING ABOUT THIS GOOD GOD
I know I was so shocked how many people in these comments didn't know, I'm so glad it's slowly getting more and more publicized
NOOOOO!!!!! WHY HIM TOOOOOO
WHY MUST MEN BE THIS WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AAAAAA AND HE WAS SO FUN ON TUMBLR TOO NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Actually devastating. Another case of it being impossible to happily, safely, and proudly vouch for any man 😔
Mad props to the women who broke their silence despite his massive social and financial power. I wish his (“alleged”) victims well, NDA be damned. *YOU CAN’T GET MAD AT SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY FINALLY BROKE AN ILLEGAL NDA, NEIL. ESPECIALLY NOT WHEN YOU PRESSURE THEM INTO SILENCE*
why men?
I can’t believe TH-cam hide this from me for 9 seconds
Thank you for caring about the cases no one talks about. I first started watching you because of the RobertIDK video. Thank you so much.
When I was a fresh out of the closet bi (pre-transition) my first big girl crush was a librarian, and I got big into this dude because she said he was her favorite author 🥴
Thanks for giving me another reason to hate this cringey era of me lmao
thank you for talking about this!!
Good Omens, my favourite Hatsune Miku creation
You can’t look up to celebrities without being disappointed later on it sucks
WE ARE THE BEAUTIFUL AUDIENCE WITH THIS ONE🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯💥💥💥💥💥
Thank you for covering this! I am so confused on why there isn't more reporting on it. I've been waiting and there's just no response.
This is really sad, really extremely painful ...i never checked his private life, except for one entry on his blog where he talked about his cats and his family.
Sandman really changed my life, the last time i read it was during the lockdowns because i needed to cheer up and that masterpiece works for me. Recently i loved his series American Gods so much that i felt the need to read it. I was planning to watch Good omens, some friends told me its not bad and his style is definitely there...well i think i will probably watch it.
Never elevate anyone to the status of Hero. No one is worthy of your adulation. All humans are deeply flawed and will let you down.
God this one hurt me so so bad, I looked up to that man so much. Why do people have to suck so bad, why do people let the power get to their head this fucking badly
Good lord. I'm so glad someone else has finally said something. I've been watching this go down hill since July, and not a single person I follow has commented on it. Thank you seriously
