  • Repaired in 2016, the banks were leaking into the fishing lakes which are at a much lower level. The section between Ash Wharf and the A331 were drained and repaired and returned back to normal

    I walk the Basingstoke Canal from Frimley Green to the A331 for pleasure. Stopping at Ash Wharf for a restorative bacon sandwich. Then walk the Blackwater Valley path to Frimley via the Old Ford pub, for use of the toilet and a diet coke, at North Camp Station. Do this on a regular basis for exercise. I am almost seventy and am dead scared of seizing up.

      How do you get back to Frimley Green? Do you carry on to Frimley Hatch Nature Reserve and turn right? Also as the canal goes under the bridge of the B3012 in the direction of Deepcut it passes over the railway line via an aqueduct, but you don't notice the crossing.

    Back in 1960 I was a 10 year old and we used to play up on this section of canal it was in a real sorry state then. I seem to recall a new born baby's body was found in a suitcase on this section I also remember falling into the water at Ash lock and having to go to hospital as the stagnant water was a polio risk still in the early 60's

      Hello Phil. Not heard about that baby but about 35 years ago a woman's body was found in the canal near Ash Wharf and recently an elderly man was pulled from the canal not far from the Ash Wharf bridge but sadly died in hospital. I have seem young people swimming in the Ash Lock only last years !!!. Not the best place to do it//////I do live along the side f the canal so I always wonder when I might see a tragedy//

    I've been involved in rails-to-trails bicycle paths and I think those are pushing the limits of volunteer efforts, even when you have engineers, lawyers and even lawn care professionals as your volunteer members. I'd think having to deal with large amounts of water flow and maintaining it would be truly massive ordeals. In addition there is still the tow path to maintain.

    I grew up as a teenager and a stones throw from where the Canal joined the Wey Navigation. One school I attended virtually backed on to the Canal as when in the old Woking hospital I could see the derelict Canal. As a keen fisherman I wished the Canal could re-0

      Hi Easy Fishing....it was a pity it got into such a state. I posted a Video I took some 35 years ago of the derelict Brookwood lock ( at Brookwood Traffic lights Bridge ) whilst it was being repaired. My son is in the video exploring as in those day we did not have PC and Health and Safety..:)

    The plastic membrane layed on the floor of the canal
    Is there concerns that narrow boats can rip it up as they pass over.

    • @nigelbaldwin752
      @nigelbaldwin752 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the 18 inch of puddled clay, laid on top helps protect it. The clay also forms the seal against leakage, but takes time. Years ago it was just clay. I remember back in late 80's /early 90's I was going to buy a house next to this canal at Ash. The garden was lower than the canal and waterlogged. I was told the bank had only just been repaired and it would take time to seal up fully.

    My son as a teenager was one of those who worked in the restoration of this canal the highest tec tools being a wheelbarrow to shift the mud. I well remember the stink coming from the mud that covered him and his boots. Pitty all that work only to ruin it by an SSI . Nothing could live in that canal until it was dugout. the result is that it is almost unusable and you don/t see narrowboats cruising as you do on the Grand union

    it's surprising how a canal can change in a short space, i cycle a lot in my area, and it goes from stunning to abandoned, i also noticed the amount of drug dealing going on near the towns and city centre's.
