You two sailors never cease to amaze me with your ability to adapt to any crisis that is thrown up in your faces. Johan says he is a bit stressed but he looked as calm as a cucumber! What a magnificent job you did of fixing the throttle cable under so much pressure. You folks are just so capable with everything you do. Conversing with different nationalities, different languages, rules and regulations never seems to get you flustered or upset...you just get on with the job & do what you have to do! I am certainly looking forward to the canal trip and RAN's big entry to the Pacific........happy and safe sailing. Hope all goes well.
An very powerful episode. A real rollercoaster of emotions. I was so sad for your troubles and so elated with the fixes. You’ve captured a facet of cruising we viewers so rarely see, and can barely imagine. As someone said, it’s not all rainbows. Thanks so much for this.
I got stressed watching this episode. I'm surprised the Panama Canal Authority doesn't charge for the air you breathe as you transit the canal... unbelievable. Johan was a rock...he just works the problem until he finds a solution...a true McGyver. Great episode...full of emotion, useful information and good advice. Well done Malin and Johan 👍
As someone else said, first time that Johan had to be "beeped".... Shoulders only slumped momentarily then he went into gear to "solve the problem" which he did admirably! If he and Brian from SV Delos got together, they could fix ANYTHING!
I'm guessing Johan has some kind of engineering degree? Brian, I believe has an engineering degree also? Have you seen Jules on Emerald Steel? I think great sailor/Captains/boat managers, begin to think a different way? I would sail anywhere with Johan. RAN is a very shipshape ship!
I bet deep down Johan really enjoyed that bit of tinkering...very satisfying to cobble something together like that. Not quite the same as making the air scrubber work on Apolo 13 but still gratifying I'm sure.
Great video and good information on getting the Panama transit sorted. So sad to see how bad Colon has deteriorated since I was last there 40 years ago. Well done to Johan for snatching victory by fixing the boat when you got hit with an untimely challenge of a broken throttle cable. Thanks for sharing!
The Wynn’s from “ Gone with the Wynn’s” did the same thing. They had family and friends fly in and help them out on the boat, they also arranged for the permit themselves
You two are amazing! This video should be a mandatory video for every young couple who say "lets sell everything and buy a boat a sail around the world.. if I were to sail with anyone it would be Mr. and Mrs MacGyver who well get you out of any bad situation. Your the best, love your videos and your we can do this attitude..
this episode was super-interesting, the canal itself but something else too. it's that on a boat there will always be something to be fixed. this is slowly getting deeper into my thinking process of living aboard. that there will rarely be times where everything goes right and that i should not think that hopefully it will go fine but instead being prepared that obstacles will come, finding solutions in the moment is more effective than worrying and overplanning... how absurd it is when i now look back how i thought about it, buying a boat, fitting it to my desires and then travel on and on and on without stress.
They will be DIY experts shortly. Looking forward to next week's video. In the meantime she is extremely adorable when she is stressed and pissed off. He is a lucky guy !!
The Crane on the barge lowering the spud in the water to hold in it place 7:00 is a Manitowoc Crane, about a 200 ton, they are made in the city with the same name in Wisconsin...!! 😎👍✅ Good job figuring out the two throttle system was the main problem and removing it. The rest of red tape was a Nightmare. 😩🤬🥺
MacGyver comes thru once again! This was a tough problem and I had some doubts but I needed to sweat, not. Malin was so cute explaining all the problems they were having and using at least three languages in the process ....it's easy to understand why Johan obviously loves her! I'm glad I haven't had that stress level and it's this kind of stuff why I'll take the long way West toward the Pacific. I enjoyed watching how well you two handle stressful situations.....thank you both!
Videos like this and other sailing videos convinces me that I will never want to own a boat. I am amazed how easily it appears you both get over the numerous obstacles thrown at you. Let's hope the transit through the canal is trouble free. I look forward to see how it goes.
Thanks for showing all the steps to transit the canal. We enjoy your travels so much. The sight of that area in Colon in shambles was astonishing. Those views and your educational narrations are something we look forward to. Johan & Malin, you inspire us. All the best to you and Ran.
Johan, your the man. Just think of how hard it would for a couple that didn't have that kind of talent on board. I have a friend who wants to buy a sailboat and cruise in the winter months in the Caribbean. He has no technical skills. He is headed for serious trouble I fear. And just think how much tougher it would have been if your sweetheart/first mate hadn't been able to sort out the banking issues. It definitely takes a team that works well together and despite the terrible moments of discouragement do not get so overwhelmed that they become immobilised. That's what it takes to be successful international cruisers. You really hung in on this one. You have also pointed out the importance of have the right spares on board. I hope your passage of the Panama canal will be less stressful. Good luck.
Great Ep! The story of the stress as you prepare to transit was well told. And if its any consolation, we all have dropped a few F-bombs regarding those pesky pop up issues on our boats too. Love your story and love the journey. Fair winds!
Great to see sailing isn't always sunshine and beer. Yes there are lots of repairs on boats but there is always repairs on homes and cars as well. Safe voyage. Sail on.
Good luck on getting your deposit back. I've seen other people have a long wait. A VERY long wait. They do that so people will just forget about it. Great video though, Entertaining and educational. You two make a great couple. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, the Canal Transit, always a high stress time. And to have the broken boat thing happen , that took it over the top. But you guys always amaze me with mechanical stuff. Looking forward to the transit video.
You are a great couple. Johan, you are fabulous, and Malin, you are sweet, you can be happy to have each other! Good luck with your transit! Looking forward to another episode! Best 2U!
Great episode The trials you faced made it well balanced and real when compared to the palm trees and beaches! Anyone would be stressed faced with those problems Thanks for the breakdown too of the costs for transit These things all give the adventure perspective and the reality that the 'real world' of business is never far away! Looking forward to great sails in the Pacific
Thanks for helping me to figure out how I would get the boat over to the Pacific ocean from the Caribbean... take the boat to Texas, take down the mast and truck it over to California and splash it...it might be a little bit more money but it would be a lot less stressful and safer..!
Good fortune for things to brake before entering the canal ! Saved a lot of money and stress. You are fantastic how you handle all this without " freaking out". Good on you !we love all your videos and your comments, GOOD FORTUNE AHEAD, CHEERS !
You Guys AreAwesome! Love your videos! You both are very talented! My husband and I enjoy watching your travels, Met you on TH-cam In Canada,.We Have been following you ever since. We live in Michigan, Winter has been rough but following your adventures has taken the Cold Chill off of use at least foe a while. Good Luck 👍🏻🍀
I guess if Barry catches up he will be in for a big surprise.. When my time comes. .I think I'll sail the horn and save the money.. The Panama Canal does save time.. but only if you have the money. It is a money game.. sorry to hear you had to play it and with the stress of repairs to make your appointment. I cant wait to hear about the adventures once you cross into the pacific.. God bless and God speed on your journey.
Appreciate how you managed situations very patiently. Remember our ancestors how managed saling around the world without any modern things. God bless you, good luck, keep forward.
manfred schmalbach One needs to work on ones sarcasm...I for one, Apologise. One forgets emoticons can simply not illustrate ones humour clearly enough when one expresses ones self over short message service. From one too another. One, again apologizes. ✌🏻
... so, it's on me now to apologize, too, after I seemingly didn't get it in the first try, isn't it? Done. And yes, they do work together nicely. Enviable. I singlehand for that matter, now when we are already at it ...
I don't think I have what it takes to do this kind of thing. My hat is off to you two brave and capable souls. I'll just sail back and forth in my little Lake Ontario lolol
Awe so sorry seems like boats are like old cars... hope you both have better days ahead but thank you both for sharing your experience because this helps all of us watching you ..... love you guys. Thank you.
Very well done. Same happened to me - went all the way through France by canal, about 200 locks, and just before the last lock, Port St louis, the throttle cable broke. But there was no pressure to fix it like in your situation. It really shows you have to be self sufficient with a boat. All the best.
Dang! It's expensive to transit the canal and wire broke too. Worst timing but Johan is clever, smart and able to do a makeshift repair. It's a lot to deal with but you both have found workable solutions. Wow. Chin up.. 😊
I'm so pleased that you showed all the warts and challenges. I hope to go through myself some day in the not too far future so this will be really helpful - actually it already was as I had assumed you HAD to use an agent. I would do it as you did too. Great to see how you both support each other through the challenges.
THX, It was the first video that give a total information about the things before you pass the canal. Thx a lot and finger crossed for all the things with your motor an dthe passes. i now your are on the way through the pacific while we are seeing this.
An interesting episode for all the wrong reasons 🤣 far from the paradise of the last few episodes.. looking forward to the transfer ..hope all stays on the fixed side for it..👍best wishes from IRELAND 🇮🇪
What an ordeal !! Yet you handled everything just fine. Minor OMG. And, BTW, Malin, you look fabulous wet from the rain !! 😊😉✨🥂⛵️⚓️✨😊 Best wishes in your transit.
Such a shame that all those issues all came together at once. We are currently in a similar (but less stressful) situation where the boat has multiple issues at once right as we prep to go to the Bahamas. You guys are doing such a great job getting through the rough times. Best of luck and fair winds.
Brilliant episode, love you guys, so informative, no BS and great editing. So helpful for anyone wanting to transit the PC. Really shocked by the state of Colón, so sad for the people there when so much money transits the canal. Great job with the engine and felt so sorry for you both with all the issues but as you said that's boats for you... One day I might be needing this info for my own transit in my Rival 32... Take care, safe passage and look forward to the next episode. Andy UK S/Y Corrival
Murphy's law strikes again, that's boats for ya ! Good to see Johan cobble together another repair. Very resourceful skipper. Thoroughly enjoyed the episode, looking forward to the transit vids. Fair winds 👍
Sorry to hear about the throttle cable issue but wish you both all the best of luck with the transit into the pacific,, love your channel and most of all stay safe👍⚓️⛵️⚓️⛵️
Wow what a lot of stress for you both. Do you know who you will be transmitting with before you enter the first lock? Can't wait for the subsequent episodes. Love your fortitude and ability to ride these challenges.

Great video guys. SV Appaloosa.
Well done to you both. Really enjoyed this episode even if it was no fun for you two. Johan is a great problem solver, I myself is pretty good. You must come up with solutions to problems if you own a boat. Impossible to take spares along for everything. Malin made me laugh ,when she said DYI instead of DIY. Good luck going through.
Wou i have followed you in some time and I must say you to have earned a BIG BEER what a trip. Good luck with the Channel look forward to next video. Best from IMIAK of Denmark. 😄😄⚓️

Says something they choose almost the same boats. Clever boys.

The definition of cruising...Fixing your boat in exotic locations.
Awesome, Malin, hold on to that fellow. He is one of a kind. Thank you so much for sharing!
By now you’re well on your way across the Pacific. You’ve earned it, guys! Great video, as always. 👌
Yes, the Canal Transit, always a high stress time. And to have the broken boat thing happen , that took it over the top. But you guys always amaze me with mechanical stuff. Looking forward to the transit video.
Fredag kväll; Något gott att äta och dricka och RAN-sailing. Perfekt! Go tur!
A Blessing in Disguise. Better to break in Panama than middle of the Pacific.
So sorry you had all the problems, thank you for sharing
Good work Johann. I feel your pain trying to reach into hard to access areas.
You are a great couple. Johan, you are fabulous, and Malin, you are sweet, you can be happy to have each other! Good luck with your transit! Looking forward to another episode! Best 2U!
Wow, well done to you both for getting through that stress period and top thumbs up for you Johan in fixing the boat.
Wow, so stressful! At least you have each other to help relieve the stress. Hoping the transit went well, looking forward to the next video.
Always helpful. Always entertaining! Best of luck Sweden!
You guys are Amazing! Fair Winds
Wow! What a drama filled episode. But, it was beautiful how the two of you managed the challenge. Outstanding!
Great episode. Johan always finds a way to get things fixed.

Way to keep you cool guys! It looks super stressful but you did an amazing job handling the situation! Skål
It think it amazing how cool headed Juan is. If it were me, and the cable had snapped... i would have abandoned ship! 🙈😂😂😂 you work so well together!
One simply does not abandon ship before it sinks away below One's ass, didn't You hear about that yet?

Wow! One of the more harrowing sea adventures I've seen, especially after watching Gone With the Wynns glide through the process.
I just love you two. Wonderful video and am extremely excited to see you guys transit the Canal. GOD bless you two. JC
Could completely feel your emotions - love that honesty. Very informative too!

Good luck with the transit! No more ”problemas”.

Very good episode. I am fascinated by the canal and it's workings
You handled the problems well. Cheers!
SO awesome I always wanted to transit the Panama Canal!! Love all your videos'
Well done, other story than palmtrees and sandy beaches, makes me think of my own country Belgium ( lots of rain ).
Good job, good luck, Cheers.
Bra jobbat, ni klarar allt! Imponerad.
Screw the canal. That was absolutely awful. I’d rather go around the tip of South America than deal with that nightmare. You guys are awesome!
Wow what a lot of stress for you both. Do you know who you will be transmitting with before you enter the first lock?
Can't wait for the subsequent episodes. Love your fortitude and ability to ride these challenges.
Great video my Viking friends ! Hope the rain stops ! Wow ! 🌞☀️we hope for Sunshine for you !
Wow, what an adventure. Great to see how you handle all the problems. Have a good transit through the canal! :)
I must say you held your cool very well,I don't think I would've been able too, very good vid thanks guys.
Great video, useful and interesting.
Your boat was near my boat on doca de Alcântara in Lisbon.
Your making a great progress!
Fair winds!
Lots of good information for transiting the Canal. Not sure if I will ever do it, but I have thought about it a lot. My brother would like me to get out of the Pacific and into the Caribbean for some island cruising. I think that is mostly that he does not want to buy his own boat and can sail with me. Great video guys. SV Appaloosa.
Good job McGiver! Hope the sail to Hawaii is a good one!
Fascinating
Extremely interest episode Malin & Johan. Thanks for sharing your experience ;-)
As always guys, thanks for sharing your videos and prospectives!
Wou i have followed you in some time and I must say you to have earned a BIG BEER what a trip. Good luck with the Channel look forward to next video. Best from IMIAK of Denmark. 😄😄⚓️
KEEP SMILING GUYS
Just FYI that dock where you guys were dropped off by your water taxi /panga boat - that was where Bond did his motorcycle stunt on Quantum of Solace :) I know bc I sourced all the local vessels for the filming. Watching your Colon visit brings back memories:)
You are very brave! Regards.
just finished viewing this episode on our family's smart tv. you are a good team! :)
Damn...
Looks like crossing the canal... or starting the crossing was an adventure by itself!!
Not surprised by that breakdown when all that went wrong in so short time!
But in the end... everything was solved, and ready to start the crossing :)
See you in the other side?
Or maybe while crossing the canal in the next episode?
Regards,
Cesar
I always tell people I can go to bed everything working. wake up somethings broke lol. Good job on your repairs I was feeling your pain...GREAT video S/V Teak Key
Thanks :) ... Really informative, honest and enjoyed watching. Looking forward to part 2. Good luck!
Great Job on your DIY!
