Thanks a lot for watching! This video was a really techy one and it was probably too much for some of you :) But if you would happen to be one of the viewers who found it interesting and maybe are about to do a battery replacement yourself, we wrote down some useful things and links over on our Patreon page www.patreon.com/ransailing We wish you all a great weekend! Cheers! /Johan, Malin & Vera
I know some prefer just the cruising aspects of your videos. However, I believe that these videos - the refits, upgrades, and maintenance videos - provide valuable insights into ship ownership/cruising that isn't necessarily seen otherwise. So please, keep up the good work. Been watching for years now and I intend to keep watching.
It’s part of package ! Sailing , maintenance , hiking , exploring ! I love them all ! I loved when you replaced the mast and rig !!!! Keep like this ! Still awesome !!!!!
Crazy, wonderful Russians. On boat maintenance: sometimes I think that patience is the essential quality. I just loved the electrical overview. Johan is an excellent teacher.
They really should be using steel beams instead of aluminum. The Young's modulus is horrible. Those guys are going to have a tough journey. I hope they are fortunate with weather, otherwise, they they are in a world of hurt. Hope they have an EPIRB and a decent liferaft.
I know NOTHING about sailboats. But i would buy, sight unseen, a boat from this Gentleman. His knowledge, attention to detail and the ability to figure out work arounds if needed. They are always needed. bra gjort sir
Except the last boat he sold had something wrong with the keel. It had separated or something which may be the reason they sold it? I don't know. I'm sure he told the buyer. They discovered it on haul out in Vancouver I believe. Correct me if I am wrong.
The beauty of the internet means if a video is boring to someone, then a quick click fixes that... Tech vids are great. It's comforting to listen to a knowledgeable commentator, rather than a sales man... Practical experience can be expensive if it goes wrong, so intelligent overview is everything... Go you...
Johan: "I realize this video isn't for everybody." Me: This was actually the reason why I started to follow your channel. I love the nerdy technical stuff. :-)
Johan, this episode was both informative and entertaining.I'm a simple fresh water sailer but the complexity of a modern boat like yours demands a great deal of research, planning and knowledge when dealing with multiple systems, voltages and battery types. Your explanations are excellent and the attention to detail is very professional. Well done.
Johan, if there were a Michelin star awarded to boat owners...you'd have 3. My husband and I watch many sailing channels, but yours is our favorite, and I'm a patron. Anyone who buys RAN II will have a gold mine.
Sure, scenery is great, Vera's antics are charming, and your history bits are interesting, but I like that you show us the whole picture of boat life which includes maintenance and tech stuff. Hope all the stuff you installed works as planned. Best regards, Gloria
This is the best example of a high quality DIY LFP build on TH-cam that I have seen ... and I have watched a lot (and built my own). The use of 12 volt lead acid as a safety buffer, back-up, and for long-term storage is an excellent feature. That X2 BMS is, I think, the best available, I hope one day they will get a bit cheaper! Anyway ... good job.
To be honest these are the only types of videos I watch now. Seen enough off the sailing vlog style. I just like the electrical and mechanical videos. And videos of sailing, navigation challenges etc. ❤️
I'm 90 years old and stopped sailing in 1995 when I sold my 31' sloop after cruising for 25 years. It used to be enjoyable with a gasoline engine, a 12 Volt battery, a compass and a radio direction finder. That was primitive sailing compared to what you folks are doing but a lot of fun which I'll never forget. Of course, you're preparing to sail around the world so you need all of your upgrades. I look forward every week to see your latest video. Thank you for every thing you do for all of us.
Johan, well well you never thought that people would be that interested in battery 101. Well I for 1 am very have to learn something new today, granted it only a brief overview but none the less very informative. Thank you for do this .
⬆️ YES, watch again and again & take heed - listen and pay attention, specially about going for a parts run; witch will be several times! And, the project will take days, too.
While the girls are away the boys will play. What a wonderful project to play with. High tech power upgrade done right. The system looks completely thought true and the installation done right. I am looking forward to see the performance numbers. Well done.
Outstanding. I hope you realize how respected you are in the community. Your knowledge goes way beyond normal information and you always bring it one step higher in your descriptions. Thanks J.
I enjoy these videos alot but I'm a nerd so there's that. I've wanted to sail since I was a kid and it amazes me the technology that we have today to make living on a boat much more comfortable and safe.
Absolutely fascinating, Johan. Your knowledge, and technical expertise, are an inspiration. We enjoy your cruising, of course, and your hikes of exploration, and history, and your everyday domestic life on board. Please also continue to impress us with your boat maintenance, and upgrades
Great video Johan. All of your improvements to Ran II have been extremely elegant and show a great deal of ingenuity and a high level of quality installation. Very informative and well thought out. Meticulous is the English word that comes to mind. No shortcuts for you. Bravo!
A fair amount of boat life is boat work , if those who only want to see the cruising tried it , I’m sure they’d get a rude awakening 🤣 good video , good content keep it up . Cheers 😃🥂🍺
I'm a beginner to sailing, just having finished few basic ASA courses..I've been watching many other people who document their sailing travels, and you folks are, by far, the best to watch in every respect...
Johan ... I love your technical talks. You are a master at decision making, making it work and steering the explanations along. Your voice is also 'easy listening'. I have always loved the 'behind the scenes of life', so so interesting and important. I'm trying to follow your 'leads'. And as for those Russians ... no surprises. Incredible!!! Thanks again for your special 'mix' on RANII. Hi from Australia. Wish I was there, I truly do.
Fascinating approach to make a deconstructed battery system. Normally see the cells and bms all package together into an enclosure like a lead acid battery. I like your approach better having open easy access to all the parts allows for easier troubleshooting if issues ever come up.
VERY Informative!!!!!! THANKS for Sharing and taking the time to Break it all down....AND we did catch a Glimpse of Captain Vera too, SO Its all Good😁👍👍👍
I don't have a boat but I am installing a solar, LiFpo4 battery system along with necessary controllers and wiring. So yea the more different installs I see the better my general knowledge of how it all works together. Thanks a bunch.
I was surprised, and pleased, to see the Russian boat. For some reason, I never think of Russians having a yachting community, particularly Siberians! It was interesting to see, thank you.
Wow! Very impressive craftsmanship. The work is first class and the explanation and video is as well. I enjoy all your videos but appreciate the project videos the most. Keep em coming.
Very nice setup. I was wondering about the connection from the engine alternator to the batteries, but was glad to hear you say that the lead-acid batteries are always connected.
Malin, Johan & Vera, I have watched all of your videos for many a day. I am so impressed with your life, family, and vessel. And the Love you have for each other sure shows. I admire your attention to detail and all of your wiring connections are so neatly done. I am also am amazed by the quality of the videos. As an old salt, you leave me speechless with all of your journeys. Be safe! Many Blessing to you all!
It is interesting to see your work on Ran because sailing the distance you intend to do knowledge of all systems will get you out of any situation that may crop up, Thank you for your effort.
Really liked the video. I laughed when you said you didn't want to make it more complicated, though. I also laughed when you went to the store a few times. I feel your pain.
Perfect! I am one of the people that love these type of videos. Good information and excellent system design and execution. Better than anyone else doing the conversion that I have seen. It sounds like an easy thing to do, but is very hard to do it correctly like you have. You have covered all the critical details quite well and thought this whole thing through. Your attention to detail shows. Your battery type selection and system design is safe and that is the most important thing on a boat! Good job! Perfect in fact. Thanks for showing it all.
Johann has to be MVP ( Most Valuable Player ) in the cruising world - need a World Championship of Cruisers fixing stuff 🤣 - Johann, Brian on Delos, Bobby on Doodles and, of course Riley - feel free to add other contenders 😊 all stay safe and well
What fantastic & professional workmanship you ahve shown us Johan. You have given us some great instructions for those who would like to take this task on for themselves. FANTASTIC video and looking forward to next week. Very Best from Canada
A very well done video. Seeing a beautiful work of art, say Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earrings is wonderful, seeing how did the work would be outstanding. ⛵👨👩👦🖌✏✏
You can simulate the heat shrink with waterproof adhesive by smearing hot glue on the wire then sliding the unglued heat shrink into place. The heat gun will then melt the glue as it shrinks the tubing. Works a treat.
LOVE your technical stuff ... I'm going litium on my boat as well ... and I share your interest in building my own battery pack with BMS. Regards X-95 🇩🇰🇸🇪
I absolutely loved the video! It was so nice to finally have a "fully technical" episode again. Ivan is great in explanining and even me as a total electricity-noob understood it. I'm very excited how you'll continue Ivan and where and when the three of you hoist the sails and set course to southern europe! :)
That was a really well put together video, no need to apologise, keep the videos coming, lock down maybe easing, but i think you have alot of ppl hooked
Great video y'all. Your "education" vlogs are great for me and my wife; it teaches us so much. Mixing them with sailing/destination videos is one of the reasons your our favorite sailing channel. (That and grandparents were from Sweden 🥰) Keep it up.
You explained the workings and advantages of a separate BMS very well Johan. You never cease to amaze me.....thank you for taking the time to explain this!
Excellent video. Thanks to Johan, Malin and of course keeper of the tools Vera. Followed you each week through Lockdown and finally thought it was time to support the project through Patreon. Yours is the best channel out there so thanks for all the useful informative videos and may you be blessed with lots of fair weather and ports to visit in the future.
Excellent video. Boatwork is neverending. I like that you show it. Two of my favorite episodes were when you rebuilt Ran's engine, and when you were sail shopping.
You LOST ME somewhere near the very beginning but yes, it was honestly very interesting to know how safe and well protected your boat is, electrically, in all situations. Secondly, I can only say that "those two ladies" of yours, are in very, very safe hands. Good luck for the rest of your tasks and I can't wait for you to start your next adventure.
Thanks a lot for watching! No those episodes are very interesting but do feel sorry for Johan to be stuck doing boat work while Malin and Vera are at the beach. ;)
thanks
I like the techy ones! :o)
Im surprised you all did not go with battle born that seem to be the preferred brand among cruisers
I also find these informative

Agreed! Well said…

Absolutely
Techy that's a good one. If people want to stay on the water, They have to know these things. Your doin right, keep it up.
Johan,
Really appreciate such impeccable work presented in a educational and straight forward manor. Much appreciated…
Greetings from Anacortes
Crazy, wonderful Russians. On boat maintenance: sometimes I think that patience is the essential quality. I just loved the electrical overview. Johan is an excellent teacher.
Yeah. Only Russians and Scandinavians would do something like that. It must be the cold long winters that spark the imagination 😊
They really should be using steel beams instead of aluminum. The Young's modulus is horrible. Those guys are going to have a tough journey. I hope they are fortunate with weather, otherwise, they they are in a world of hurt. Hope they have an EPIRB and a decent liferaft.

Impressed by your methodical and intelligent way of working. Also by your laid back and kind nature. Hilsen fra Danmark
I actually like these technical videos. It is an important part of the sailing life
Yeah, if you want to over complicate your boat.
Wow those guys in the trimaran should have a gofundme page so we can all help them get to where they are going, this is why I love this channel
Johan, I'm in absolute awe about your technical competence. I wish I had one tenth of it :)
All the best, Tom
"This is not for all", I like the DIY videos.
Sure, scenery is great, Vera's antics are charming, and your history bits are interesting, but I like that you show us the whole picture of boat life which includes maintenance and tech stuff. Hope all the stuff you installed works as planned. Best regards, Gloria

Nice system Johan and you have really thought that thru. And well and clearly explained👍

I have never seen a used boat so spotless, that looks brand new. it shows the captains dedication to the boat
Johan, well well you never thought that people would be that interested in battery 101. Well I for 1 am very have to learn something new today, granted it only a brief overview but none the less very informative. Thank you for do this .

I have a friend who is converting a bus to a camper, he will find this information useful, great content
The Russian boat reminded me of Thor Heyerdahls boat. 😊
While the girls are away the boys will play. What a wonderful project to play with. High tech power upgrade done right. The system looks completely thought true and the installation done right. I am looking forward to see the performance numbers. Well done.
I know this kind of video does not appeal to everyone. But it appeals to me! Thank you. Great video as always. Love it.
Thank you for sharing your major electrical upgrades. As usual your install and quality of work is exemplary! Safe Travels.
Absolutely fascinating, Johan. Your knowledge, and technical expertise, are an inspiration.
We enjoy your cruising, of course, and your hikes of exploration, and history, and your everyday domestic life on board.
Please also continue to impress us with your boat maintenance, and upgrades
Fabulous, Russian Trimaran to circumnavigate the globe! The technical aspect of Johan was great. So informative!

Cheers 😃🥂🍺
Favorite line from Yohan about automatic switch vs manual between 2 battery systems; “ I didn’t want to complicate things too much”.
I'm a beginner to sailing, just having finished few basic ASA courses..I've been watching many other people who document their sailing travels, and you folks are, by far, the best to watch in every respect...
Excellent technical discussions. There are many of us who enjoy this level of detail so keep it up!
Du är verkligen duktig och kunnig på allt och noggrann dessutom. Mycket bra film och arbete. Jag ser gärna fler av dina mer tekniska filmer. 👍🏻
Great video. I like the technical stuff too. Very best wishes from the UK.
Maybe this kind of videos is not for all, but they are for me!!
Greetings from Sevilla - Spain!

Johan - great job explaining all that. I had to chuckle thinking that your background was carpentry. Ron
This video tells me that you are a really smart and careful guy when it comes to your vessels systems.
Thank you RAN for 262.
I Love this type of vids! You are ding a great jobb presenting the stuff in a way that is easy to understand. Good work Johan!

I'm an electrical engineer, and I still learned a few things. Thank you for making the video.
Great episode Johan keep up the good work. Your one smart cookie. Your wiring is very organized and quite accessible. Once again good job.

I'd add Nike Steiger - The White Spot Pirate to be my challenger.
Troy on Free Range Sailing
Dan on Uma
I would add sophisticated lady to that class
Great stuff Johan thanks for sharing
Looks like a very safe and versatile system, great work and great knowledge.
Amazing knowledge you have. Very sanitary installation.
Great job and information and we do listen
I like the work videos with explanations just as much as all the other facets of your sailing.
I like these kind of videos, very interesting.
Great video, I did enjoy it and you would make a great teacher.
I enjoyed it a lot, Johan! 😀
Great . Love watching projects on you boat. Explained so simple
all the wiring stuff is not my cup of tea,, but it was well presented & well done.. Great job & many happy days ahead..
These videos were the reason I started to watch and subscribe to RAN sailing. Well done

Excellent video. Boatwork is neverending. I like that you show it. Two of my favorite episodes were when you rebuilt Ran's engine, and when you were sail shopping.
Thanks..I loved your explanation. Very clear, very precise. I'm in the decision making stage now to do this type. Thanks so much...
Johan, your talents and expertise are truly amazing ⛵️⛵️⛵️😊
Thank u for teaching me how to do this type.of setup I'm not good with electrical systems
Very cool explanation on the electrics, they might not be for all but it helped me. Tack så mycket!
Really enjoyed the battery video. It is very interesting to understand how Ran II works and the process you go through.
