Very helpful tutorial on the process of transiting the Panama Canal. I didn't realize it would be so expensive. It definitely makes sense to have a boat under 50 feet in length.

Cool. You need a sticker or flag or something that lets future onlookers know Karl is a true veteran world traveller. Something people in LA or Vancouver BC, or Anchorage will recognize. I'll be able to wave as you cruise by Alki Beach in Seattle, provided you are coming this way.

You've apparently never met a Panamanian. It is barely a country that has all the attributes of Spanish conquistadors, English pirates, and most of the GDP is living off the proceeds of United States capitalism. I'm looking forward to the Chinese building their canal through Honduras.
symbolsandsystems I constantly consider many things ;) I once thought about going through the canal, then head south and back round the Horn e.g. This way round I didn't since getting to the tip of Brasil is quite the long an rough tack against prevailing winds.
Just out of curiosity: How much money did you save by not using an agent? And do you have an estimate on how much of your time you had saved if you had hired an agent?
