    I was very surprised as the foam melts the sand didn’t collapsed in. Fascinating watching you hand made your tools

    I just love the channel. I have so much learning to do. 🙂 I hated school you couldn’t get me to read a book for nothing but now I have a little Library of machining books. Keep up the Awsome work. Thank you

    I am building the shaper to,right now I'm machining the feed crank. I am having such a good time with this project. And you inspired me to build it. I love watching as you build your shaper ,it's been a blast.

    I'm always so impressed by how simple techniques can yield such nice parts and thus a nice machine. Very inspirational. Well done as always! Can't wait to see more.

    Beware breathing foam smoke! Some acquaintances had a booming spray insulation company back in the seventies and one died of cancer after maybe 5 years, the other died in a cycle accident. (no autopsy I recall) I think they have changed the foam, but I would check! But so much for GLOOM!
    Great work on your projects!

    I noticed the jaws on your lathe machine jolt-is (it the right word? ) when you do the mount or flange for jaws -because you want bigger jaws or smaller or jus put them on.. , always make the mount -flange little bit bigger. You can use your lathe machine for make the flange. Then take the jaws completely off. Then bolt on the lathe shaft this new mount-flange then start the lathe of course without jaws just with the new flange and take off the rest couple of mm or inches whatever until you can get your jaws back on. Then screw the jaws back on the mount and now you gonna have perfect straight jaws. Always do it this way. Doesn’t matter if is home made lathe or from factory.

    Interesting casting technique. I'm thinking good old-fashioned plastic wrap would give you a cleaner surface than the styrofoam without a cover and then the plaster before you set it in the sand of course

    Always glad to see another installment on the shaper. I think you are going to enjoy the way a shaper cuts , especially on dovetail ways. Would smoothing the foam with some bee's wax give a smoother finish to your casting's? I worry that those little indents could be a stress point, for cracking.

    I can see a lot of runout in your lathe. Once you have the shaper done you should do a series that goes back and makes improvements to the original design.

    You may want to use engine oil to lubricate that instead of WD-40, which is not a great lubricant and will evaporate quickly.

    Im worried that this project may have been abandoned... No update, no uploads in over 2 months. Hope he's OK and not quitting the channel. Nothing from Click spring either in quite some time. Hobby machining is going the way of the dodo it seems.

    I am wondering if making off gas ports will cut down on porosity and using old car rims will help with this you can use straws for off gassing ports and a riser as well I must say you are doing a grate job well done .

    • @Makercise
      @Makercise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. In comercial lost foam casting vents are not used. At least not predominately according to information frim AFS. In my experience vents do not seem to help. The porosity in my castings is coming from dissolved hydrogen. I will address it in a couple months.

    Looks like the lost foam method gives a great internal structure with a lot of surface porosity, as well as no need for a draft angle. Is that right? Do you use a particular type of sand?

    • @Makercise
      @Makercise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Home depot play sand. Surface porosity is really just texture. I am getting porous castings because I am not degassing.

  • @BiglinesNL
    @BiglinesNL 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think the lost foam would work for the lathe bed as well? or is that too big?

    • @Makercise
      @Makercise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it could work. The biggest thing would be trying to make the pattern rigid enough to not deform.

  • @almonies

    It would be great if I had the money for a surface plate. I don't have the other option in the gingery lathe book. Not sure how to get past that part.

    • @mickcaulton001
      @mickcaulton001 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a surface plate either but you will probably be supprised on how flat a piece of plate glass is. I also have a polished marble chopping board which I tried after reading about someone using one and that Is also very flat. I have tested both with DTI and both read zero on a tenth of a thou scale. Hope this maybe of some help to you getting started.

    • @almonies
      @almonies 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Caulton Actually it might, I have a thick marble board for chocolate cooling. Glass might be a good thing to check out also. Thanks 🖒🖒

      Just got to one of those (forgot the name) places that make tomb stones and things like that and ask for a piece of granite. More times than not, the person working there will give it to you for free.

    Your Sand is verry dry and you Need a riser (outcomes) by your casting who cool down last. For better results of casting.

      For lost foam casting the drier the sand the better.

    I have only tried aluminum casting twice and I see yours have a number of porosity issues despite your efforts. I found this video where this guy used a "plunger" to put the degassing salt in the bottom of the crucible and it bubbled up. His cast was a lot better than anything I have seen. Can it really be that simple? th-cam.com/video/8fpzNK3d0rs/w-d-xo.html
