  • Well, it has been a long wait for my Snoek to be built and arrive on Covid island, but finally, it is here. And what a machine it is,i cannot wait to put it to the test on a race track where I am sure it will come into its own.A big Veloads shout out to the crew at Velomobiel.nl for designing this bike.I have not named the Snoek yet so all suggestions in the comments section would be most appreciated.

    Great mini review, John. FWIW…I take delivery of my Snoek today. I believe I’ll be the first velo rider in the Western Hemisphere to take delivery. #9

    I'd be scared of big vehicle blind spots (as a former bus driver). Looks like a really well made and fun machine. I'd love to see them become more popular!

      And you are not scared of blind spots when on a regular bike?

    • @DemiGod..
      @DemiGod.. 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have a bicycle and recumbent trike. Not scared of blindspots nomatter what I ride as take them into account as I ride. I actually find a trike alot safer on the road due to how traffic treat you than a bicycle which i assume will also apply to velomibiles. To be honest dont have issues nomatter what I ride or drive due to being trained as an advanced driver and rider.

    Thanks John, for the video, good to see the Snoek in a bit more detail, it would be great if you could do video looking at how Velomobiles have evolved (Stuart mentioned the different generations) so we can see the differences side by side (not sure if this is possible). Potentially looking at something for commuting, but seems decision to navigate for a novice like me.

      @@raychambers3646 From someone riding fixie, cargo bike, open recumbent (M-Racer) and various velomobiles: The height doesn't make a difference. It's basically the size of a Locost or Caterham, only misses some width but has full-body color to make up for that.
      People who rarely ever look up from their phone aren't even going to miss a truck; because of this, speed is the biggest danger with a velomobile. It's not like a normal bike, where you can brake your way out of everything. Once you put some power in this thing you're over 40 mph, as long as you ride defensive and keep your mind on what you're doing you're fine.

    Informative and entertaining too!
    Thanks for sharing... But boy, is it ever small. You could maybe call it Sardine?
    There is no chance of me fitting in that Snoek (name of another small fish I've only ever seen in a tin), I would not even have fitted in it when I was 12 years old. OK, I'm jealous. But . . .
    As a (now long retired) engineer I cannot help thinking that there is little point in reducing the frontal area that drastically, never mind the inadequate length inside for blokes like me, since they have left that lumpy lamp out in the breeze. I'm serious!
    Properly slippery vehicles are easily ruined by just one lumpy item. Do you recall the Aptera? A very slippery vehicle, which interested me professionally, so I dropped in on them when I was still working for a US company. At that time Aptera had just completed the testing of an aero enhancement - which had concealed the (single) parked wiper blade behind a suitable fairing. Hardly worth the bother, surely?
    Wiper, car, relative size and drag? On a Land Rover, sure, but not in this case.
    The point is that hiding that wiper blade reduced the overall drag of the Aptera car by very nearly half. Wiper blades are all corners, see. So without cranking up a CFD engine, I feel that the lamp looks like it needs fairing in! Has a wind tunnel test been done, yet?
    Really worth checking that if you are serious about going racing.
    Thanks again, great video!

    Its quite sad that there isnt much money going into the velomobiles. Atleast not if you compare them to road bikes.
    Velomobiles are faster, why faster... except for steep mountains that is. They are more comfortable and more efficient. Even the environmental aspect cant be beaten.
    The problem, that all this money is going into the road and timetrial bikes, comes from the uci i guess. What are your thoughts about this issue?

      I'd like to chime in, if that's OK. If you're just talking sport, then the UCI figures into velomobiles, yes. That aspect will be whatever it is, but given the history of the UCI, I don't expect much.
      My personal interest is in velos as personal transportation and as a greener option.
      I see the development of velos like the beginnings of automobiles. We are now past the early experimental stage and have found a consistent form factor. We have racing machines, like the Snoek, for 'sex appeal', if you will.
      To me, the next leg is comfort, security, and mass transportation, especially here in N. America. That means e-assist, more cargo and passenger space (Quattrovelo), and more dedicated commuting infrastucture.
      And it begins with more riders, more visibility, wider acceptance, and more people like us. I'm waiting on my first machine. Cheers.

      IMO cycling as a sport has done net zero for the the promotion and development of cycling as a practical form of transport.

    It looks very vulnerable,like a Sinclair C5 with a roof.I would be very wary on the road with it,but I think on a cycle lane it makes more sense.But I bet it can shift...

    For public roads I don't think that I could ride that without a flag on it. The velo is too low for what I would consider to be comfortable in traffic.

      flag wouldn't do anything but slow it down dramatically.

    • @4nz-nl
      @4nz-nl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      FYI: A flag won't help you. Might even cause you trouble, since in most mind "flag" means "child on bike", which equals "slow". This one might even be a little bit lower, mine (a Milan) is as high as a Caterham. I commute up to 600km/week with it.
      Ride defensive, expect people will not give you right of way, and you'll be fine.

      Kevin Johannes, I ride a road bike and still have a flag sticking out side ways, it stops the close passes, makes me a little more visible, it does work, and only knocks off about 1 kmph on a 50 min run (extra 2 mins)

    • @4nz-nl
      @4nz-nl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@007floppyboy Flag sideways? On your road bike that's only 1 km/h. On a recumbent or velomobile, it will cost you more.
      Aside that, it will probs only stop close passes because people don't want to scratch their car without at least hitting you? ;)

    • @007floppyboy
      @007floppyboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4nz-nl I agree, possibly more on yours, but even if its 2-3 km/p/h its still worth deterring those close passes, it (my flag) has been hit twice, I think thats 2 times I would have had an incident.
