It's September 12th and the comments are black and white. One side thinks this game is an underrated gem, and the other thinks I give it too much credit. That's not a problem, but it is very interesting. I think the reason opinion on this game is so divided is that it's extremely unconventional. It's rare for a story to be upheld by characters and world, and it's rarer still for a narrative to throw you into (some say repetitive) gameplay so often with so few cutscenes. There's little downtime in this game, I liked that, but I can see many people would've preferred a more fleshed out way of telling the story. Really, it depends on what you value in video games. I'm working on the Spiderman PS4 video right now btw.
Kira, I love shattered dimensions. I really want to make a video on it and Ultimate, but I don't know when I'll get around to it. I also haven't finished Ultimate. I thought that the Amazing Spiderman 1 was a very good game. Really underrated. Amazing Spiderman 2 though sucked. I can see why you'd think those games had strengths that were used in Spiderman PS4. Though I'm not seeing anything from Ultimate tbh. It took the stealth from shattered dimensions, although, shattered dimensions pioneered the system that was used in both Amazing Spiderman games too.
I honestly would rate this higher as a spiderman game if it wasn’t so damn buggy sometimes. I remember playing the wolverine fight but he got in the corner near the alley. His AI wouldn’t trigger the question asking scene and he became invulnerable, stuff like this happens so much where triggers wont happen it genuinely ruins alot of the game for me
Though ps4 is technically the best, it is missing something. It's a jack of all trades master of done. Here's a quote that perfectly descibes my opinions "Spider Man PS4 is like a pure bred german shepard, while web of shadows is like a 3 legged staffy mixed corgi. Both are dogs, and both are excelent in their own ways. But there's something I find more charming anout the 3 legged staff corgi" -AKindAleWar
For a year and a half development they made a pretty badass game. Going back to it recently made me wonder what potential the game has with a longer dev cycle
If this game was made with todays tech with the complexity of the web slinging, all of the countless cameos from Marvel characters, the venom suit, shield and their helicarriers, the story, and everything, this game would be fucking insane.
Hopefully we get this with Marvel’s Spiderman 2, and we’ll also get the added bonus of having Miles Morales there too. I’ve been saying for a while that the sequel should be a spiritual successor to Web of Shadows; they can even include Wolverine in the game now that his game is announced
Sliding over cars, wait wha- After all these years of owning this game, farming useless amounts of XP from several replays, collecting every single spider token (what a chore that was) and sinking unhealthy amount of hours into free roaming cuz the swinging physics were just so cewl, I find a feature I never noticed before, huh.
Straight Busta! What I love is there's some unintended shit you can do that makes the game even more interesting. Like, while wearing the Black Suit, pressing attack in the air has Peter do those upwards slashes, but did you know they maintain his momentum the first time you do em? You can boost off a swing and get RIDICULIUS range off it, easily passing whole blocks if done right Seriously try it it's fun as fuck to experiment with!
Don't worry, I played this game for almost a month during the quarantine, explored a lot of the map and didn't knew that I could climb the webs while swinging on them
Just thought I'd bring up an interesting detail about Vulture in this game. If you talk to Kingpin after your first encounter with the flying Symbiotes (I don't know if it works immediately afterwards), you'll have a dialogue prompt of talking about Vulture. Basically, Kingpin will ask if Adrian Toomes has ever come across as a bit strange to Spiderman, who responds by pointing out that he is an old man who flies around, trying to kill him in a bird costume, then asks for clarification that the Kingpin is asking about abnormal behaviour from the person he just described. Kingpin goes on to tell him that Vulture had gone missing recently, and that the last time they spoke with each other, he seemed a bit...off. Spiderman acknowledges this and agrees to keep an eye out for him acting stranger than usual (implying that Symbiote Vulture was a thing for much longer than the game explicitly let on).
Unpopular opinion: I actually love Spider-man's voice in this. The extreme shift in his voice when he's usual witty self versus the dark angsty symbiote influenced version of him is immersive to me, and I feel like it was a smart choice to make, despite all the hate the game gets for it
There's a reason why I agree with critics here. The people who are praising this version of Web of Shadows should be praising the combat first and last - because the story, the voice acting, the graphics and the morality system are half-assed at best and atrocious at worst.
@@michaelgoldsmith9359 just knowing assassin's Creed came out a lil before this and has aged WAY better than this game I would disagree to the graphics looking good for this game. Still looks fun though
@@5hane9ro it still looks really good considering how the state of the city gradually changes as the story progress. It has a lot going on so the graphics mightve taken a little hit. But in my opinion the models looks really good, the city is snazzy and the animations are just immaculate to look at
Oh my fucking god. I remember getting the ps2 version. At the time I was young and didn't quite understand things about games, so as I played through it, i just kept thinking "man, i cant wait until i get to the open-world section". God that was stupid. I got the actual game on the wii some time later. So glad I did.
I was going to get it on PS2 when it came out but I never did. Still haven't played it to this day and I didn't know about the differences until recently this year.
I loved this game, it's a shame Shaba didn't get a chance to make a sequel. The combat was fantastic and incredibly addictive. The movement was quick but each attack had a nice, heavy feel which was very satisfying. When God of War 3 came out one of the developers referenced Web of Shadows as the inspiration for some of its new combat mechanics. Yeah, the city can be drab but once you get past that it's a blast. The web swinging, wall crawling and parkour elements felt great as well and as the video mentions the character models looked awesome. I know the devs asked for more time to polish it up but Sony was firm with their deadlines. Had they gotten an extension maybe they could have fleshed the world out a bit more. I think that would have went a long way towards changing people's general perspective of the game.
Yep. THIS spiderman could easily beats Thanos. (When you can see he fights giant mech in seconds, beats an ultra powerful symbiotic armored wolverine , and taking bombs from the shields planes does nothing on him). This character is so OP.
There actually was a planned sequel to Spider-Man Web of Shadows, developed by Shaba Games. Here's what I've been able to find: "Spider-Man Classic is the cancelled sequel to Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. It featured Spider-Man and Wolverine teaming up to fight new villains such as Carnage and Mysterio. The game was set to have Spidey fans traveling through some of Spider-Man's most exciting, classic villian fights from the comics, the artist notes that it would have been "told in panel-by-panel faithfulness to the original comic". It was cancelled because Shaba Games, the studio behind Web of Shadows, closed their doors back in 2009 which lead to all their current video game projects to be terminated, including Spider-Man Classic. It was replaced with 2010's Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, which fans considered a indirect sequel to Web of Shadows."
I remembered being so amped for news of the sequel! Imagining what they'd add to the fight system and what suits they would of used for all the "classic" fights to come. Then forgot about it for 5+ years only to hear it was cancelled 😭
I was torn apart when i heard they closed in 2009 literal tear coming out of my eye if they didnt close and ppl bought this master piece imagine what would they would've done in this generation of games
To be fair, I've never played DMC. I was referring to the skill based combat in DMC vs the beat em up style combat here. What would be a better comparison?
Seems like most people don't understand the point in the choice system. In general, the point is indeed to alter the story, but the true purpose of this system is to align yourself with "hero" or "villian" allies. Choosing red or black choice will have your alignment meter fully one-sided. It can be altered with time by playing with the opposite suit as you mentioned in your video. That's why some choices don't really matter to the story or even makes things confusing: - The choices against Vulture: Red choice means you're doing the right thing by leaving him to the police to handle. Black choice means Spidey is scaring Vulture to the point he agrees to fight alongside you. - After defeating Symbiote Electro, choosing red means he too exhausted to fight (perhaps dead?). Choosing red means Electro is mad about the symbiotes as Spidey and is willing to fight alongside him. - Ripping/not ripping Wolvering means the same. It doesn't mean much to the story as it does to the ally feature. Other choices make more sense and still fit to the hero/villian allies aspect. The above cases and some others are there only for the sake of changing your alignment meter. BTW, let's say you chose not to free Rhino but later in the story you're aligned to the black side, you can still summon him as an ally. Brilliant, isn't it?! This comment is far too long already so I won't talk about the other aspect of the game.
Allies weren't even in the wii version. I disagree with this being the true purpose of the suit system. I don't think the intention was to align yourself with allies, I think that's a side effect of the choices having alignment effects. What you said about being able to summon allies who you pissed off makes sense though.
After I posted this, I realized "true purpose" is not the best wording. Still, I feel like the intention was to show how your choices affect gameplay itself and not just the story. And again, sometimes they prioritize grouping you with the correct side of the ally over making sense story-wise. And yes, I'm aware that there arn't allies in the Wii version at all, I even mentioned that in my early draft but forgot to include that in the final post.
One game breaking method of playing I discovered on my first play through is that the block never breaks. You can hold the block button for as long as like, waiting until your health fills up and continue on playing. This works even against bosses as I found that literally nothing can break spider-man's block
no. there were definitely attacks by normal symbiotes, the kingpin mech, and nearly all bosses that definitely broke the block. i have played the game 30+ times (yes i am pathetic) so i think you are wrong cheers
@@aryan7767 While there are some attacks that break your block, most of the time your block is unbreakable. This is pretty evident in the symbiote electro boss fight where you can just cheese all of the electrolings/electros attacks.
ive noticed that all of my deaths so far are mainly due to me getting too greedy with the overcountering system, i rarely drop below half health otherwise
While they are similar, with being superhero open world games with a infection apocaliptic scenario, they are still very differenti beasts... Prototype is much more brutal and combat centric ( wos is more combat centric compared to other spiderman games, sure, but not "dedicated" to it's mayham). For example in prototype most if not all "weapons" allow you to slaughter low level cannon fodder without much problems. It also give more combat variety with "stealth lite" scenarios and the ability to drive tanks and helicopter. Prototype also is more violent and deliberate in its design, putting you in the shoes of what would be a "villan" in any other game (you have to "devour" people to heal and\or take their appereance). Wos instead suffers from what most spiderman games (and super hero games in general) suffer... Repetivity and a imposed playstile...
Check out The Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, it's a ps2/gamecube open-world game made by the developers of Prototype. It's a prototype of Prototype if you will, but much better IMO
Spiderman Web of Shadows and Prototype are basically the same game. The similarities I’ve noticed are pretty crazy. Straight off the bat, they’re both developed by now closed down subsidiaries of activision, both were published by activision too. Both games are about a superhero with highly destructive powers fighting back an infection, and in both games, the second half is when the city has completely gone to shit. Both games have superheroes who’s most notable abilities revolve around their manipulation of biomass. Both games start with a prologue at the height of the infection, both games are set in manhattan, both games end on an aircraft carrier, both games are about the way power changes you, both games star massive edgelords, both games were released only a year apart. I honestly can’t believe that all of this was a coincidence.
30 seconds in and Im thinking FINALLY!!! someone recognizes just how good this game is. Never have I had so much fun in combat on a spiderman game, and yes that includes spiderman 2. I actually rate this above it for the most part.
This and Ultimate Spiderman are my favourite Spiderman games, but even I feel like you're giving this one more credit than it deserves. Mostly in the narrative department and the way the characters and story are portrayed. Gameplay wise I do agree this was the best feeling spiderman game.
An hour long video covering one my most favorited Spider-Man games admiring and praising the game, admitting it’s underrated, and saying it’s not immaculate but is still a great game and one of the most phenomenal you have ever played? You have earned all of my respect and a like. This is going to my Top Favorites playlist. Thank you for taking the time to cover such a phenomenal game that meant a lot to me.
Actually, they reused a lot of the assets from Spider-man 3 (just compare both Spider-man models) and the game is more than 10 years older, and is far below the bar for this generation's quality. All in all, it's impressive work for Shaba, and the extra time would've helped smooth out the game, but it wouldn't have been as much of a game changer as you'd think, and four years would've been overkill. Don't get me wrong, though. The quality of this game is very impressive, especially as one of the first games of the generation, and Shaba deserved praise, not to be closed down. Even still, Insomniac were just as impressive and creative, and deserve the same amount of appreciation.
@@mar_speedman no they don't. Insomniac copy Arkham all the way to the same button presses for the same instant takedowns and automated parkour traversal. They had four years to make something new and unique Spider-Man like Web of Shadows did but they didn't
@@eziospaghettiauditore8369 even tho they the same button press the combat feels way different batman feels more slow and brute force while spider man is more fast paced while instant take downs if you mean stealth the two are different batman knocks put out in a chock hold while spider man sticks enemys to the wall again spiderman can get objects swing around then throws them to his enemy and automated parkour has been done in many guys some before the arkham
@@abdullahamr9941 And the whole free flow combat really was introduced in Spider-Man 2 😐. Yet people still seem to dick ride the Arkham games for supposedly making the free flow combat system, sad.
Yep. THIS spiderman could easily beats Thanos. (When you can see he fights giant mech in seconds, beats an ultra powerful symbiotic armored wolverine , and taking bombs from the shields planes does nothing on him). This character is so OP.
Guillaume Tizon I disagree. Even in the MCU, Thanos is too durable. He literally shrugs off a spaceship crashing into him and a building dropped on him hard enough to produce a shockwave. He’s at least on-par with MCU Hulk, who can kill gigantic space whales in a single hit. Heck, we tore apart Tony’s armour like it was tin foil, and that thing took a meteor with barely a scratch. WOS Peter is strong, but not ‘kill a multi thousand ton space whale with one punch’ strong. He’s tough, but not not ‘take a giant meteor without a scratch’ tough. His biggest advantages are his agility, webbing and his spider-sense - but frankly I don’t think that’s enough. Dodging and weaving will and landing attacks when he can will only get him so far. Besides, that’s only using MCU versions which are relatively grounded in their abilities. Comic Thanos has way more superpowers, energy blasts, mind control, even magic - he has forcefields that can make Galactus exert himself. He laughs off guys who can shatter moons or destroy planets, and beats their asses. Comic Spidey is a lot stronger than most, but his best strength feats are supporting a section of a building or supporting a plane on his back. He can’t beat Thanos. He’s failed to beat people like him before. - Fights as hard as he can against Hulk, trying to save MJ, but to no avail: m.imgur.com/a/vV2hx - Barely hurts Angrir (aka the Thing) - m.imgur.com/a/Vg1Gk1m when he’s pushing his limits, but Thor later kills him with ease: m.imgur.com/a/DFxOJ7k - Doesn’t faze Juggernaut, doesn’t even budge him - m.imgur.com/wsQwPfM Spidey beating guys like Firelord? A Herald of Galactus (still below Thanos, who beats Silver Surfer regularly)? That’s bad writing, unless you want to argue Spidey is planetary. He can’t beat these guys in a fair one on one fight, not without backup, extra technology, or a shit ton of bad writing. I love Spidey, he’s my favourite superhero, but while he’s used to fighting people who outclass him, that only gets him so far. He’s definitely powerful, a lot more than most of his rogues, but he lives in a world full of super powered people, and there are plenty outside his league - but he’s the underdog we root for.
Robbie Drake Spider-Man beating Firelord is one of the most infamous examples of bad writing within the comic community. In that fight Firelord somehow loses Spidey’s location, despite his cosmic awareness. Firelord’s been hit to a moon and he fights on par with guys like Silver Surfer. Spidey has trouble lifting a single section of the Daily Bugle - really impressive, but several orders of magnitude behind what these guys can do. No amount of Parker punches - enraged or not - should be able to KO the guy. I really shouldn’t have to explain why beating Firelord is silly. And sure, he beat Juggernaut, but by your own admission it was by tricking him into cement. Physically he couldn’t hurt him. Pete’s victory was entirely dependent on the environment and Juggernaut’s stupidity in that moment - it’s not something that can be relied on it most matchups, and Juggernaut wasn’t even trying to fight Spidey that badly. In 99% of fights, Juggs takes Spidey easily. And punching away the Thing doesn’t mean he can beat him. He’s not immovable. And Pete literally says that he can’t beat Thing: comicvine1.cbsistatic.com/uploads/original/8/80103/2226655-angrirvsspiderman3.jpg (Second panel, top left; ‘I can’t go toe-to-toe with the Thing on his worst day’) You say it’s misleading because Spider-Man was hurt, but you realise that he’s hurt worst _because_ of that fight right? He got hit twice in that fight and he’s in that bad a state. He was tired before that, sure, but after that hit he says his chest was on fire and says he can’t survive a second hit. Heck, he hurts his hand just hitting him. Quite frankly it’s amazing Spidey did as well as he did. Thing was stronger here, but he was still way less powerful than Thor, who is way less powerful than Thanos (all referring to 616 here). For the record, I love Spidey: he has an indomitable will, he puts others before himself and fights crime even (and especially) when it’s inconvenient for him, his social life and his relationship with others - he’s a fantastic character. Still, acting as though he’s capable of beating Ben Grimm is disingenuous. He’s way stronger than guys like Cap, but he’s not Ben Grimm strong. He’s in between the usual street tiers and the heavy hitters, definitely not on-par with top-tiers or above.
It's weird to think that people were divided on the web swinging in this game. I personally think it's the best and most rewarding (aside from PS4), and I thought everyone at least agreed on that. Shows what I know. I absolutely love this game. Flaws and all. And you can't help but laugh at some of the flaws it has: the overacting from nasally Peter Parker, the amazingly goofy glitches, the dark and edgy story, the fact that you can pummel an ordinary dude to death and get away with it, kicking a car and witnessing the physics engine have a mental breakdown, it's all great stuff and so much fun. This is still my favorite Spidey game, aside from PS4. If for no other reason than the fact that it shows a much more capable and confident Spider-Man, with agility and acrobatics not seen before until that point, with a combat system that is still the best when it comes to switching between the black and red suit and attacking on the walls, in the air, or on the ground.
Best review of this game EVER. I SHALL ALWAYS BE GLAD I BOUGHT THIS GAME DAY 1.It's seriously a game which is very close to my heart and the first ever game I bought. In the end the way you compared shaba's situation to the situation of spidey in the game against the venomzilla is what makes me shed a tear.... How capable of a studio shaba was as they achieved SO Much in just 17 months yet they weren't given any appreciation JUST like web of shadows..... Its like web of shadow's story became the story of shaba itself.. Its just sad
Sorry about the reupload, the last 30 seconds of footage got claimed by activision, and they decided that they deserved to make money off the entire 70 minute video. Not gonna happen. My voice didn't seem to stick out in the audio here. Is that just me?
@@Whitelight What was the 30 second clip though? I'm just curious to know what was so bad about it that Activision felt the need to claim the entire video because of it.
I remember this was the first legitimate game I got. In India back then games were hilariously expensive, and for a low income household like ours, buying real games was out of the question. Despite that my father bought it for me, and after I realized it required a "video card" to play, I cried. And the very next day, my father bought a graphics card too, a Gigabyte 8400GS. I cant stress enough, how big of a financial undertaking this was. My father bought me something well beyond our capabilities, just because I cried once. Ofc the gpu was to weak for the game, despite that I played it at 15 fps to completion. This game will forever be special to me. And just like Whitelight, its an incredible experience realizing that it was far better than I remembered.

I remember buying this game as a kid and legitimately not knowing a single thing about it other than it was a spiderman game. Watching the city being taken over by the symbiote was terrifying but so intriguing and I couldn't put the game down
The concept of transforming to symbiote suit in real-time with just one button was so genius, along with it's own skills and combat style. Basically every Spider-Man fan's dream come true. I'm really hoping Spider-Man 2 (2023) will have something similar.
Yep. THIS spiderman could easily beats Thanos. (When you can see he fights giant mech in seconds, beats an ultra powerful symbiotic armored wolverine , and taking bombs from the shields planes does nothing on him). This character is so OP.
Guillaume Tizon I don’t really agree. Even in the MCU, Thanos is just too durable - he took buildings dropped on him hard enough to cause a shockwave, without a scratch. In terms of raw strength he outboxes the Hulk who one-shot a gigantic space whale. He crushed Vision’s vibranium forehead with two fingers, and tore apart Tony’s suit - which literally took a gigantic meteor with virtually no damage - with ease. WOS Peter is way faster, and certainly rather powerful - Thanos will be hard pressed to hit him, but every time Peter gets close he risks it. Everything he does is certainly impressive, but I really don’t think it’s enough to actually KO him. And obviously with the stones, Thanos wins. Not much Peter can do if he decides to just phase him into the ground (Hulkbuster Banner) - there’s no leverage - or he can just turn him into stone (Drax) or toss a moon or create a black hole or whatever. Peter doesn’t have the capabilities to deal with something like that, nor is he good enough to disarm the guy; too much raw strength, the Avengers only succeeded with a whole team + armour strong enough to lift buildings + their own Spidey + space technology + magic + mind control. And that’s just the MCU, where the characters are (relatively) more grounded in their abilities. If we go into the comics it’s a shitstomp. Sure, comic Spidey is strong - he lifts train cars, supported a plane on his back and even supported a building - or one section of it anyway. He can weave through automatic gunfire like nothing, survive massive explosions, and his webbing can hold up skyscrapers. His spider-sense is pretty insane and his agility is off the charts. But Thanos laughs off guys who can shatter moons and planets. And in the comics he doesn’t just have his fists. He can mind control people, fire energy blasts, is decently versed in magic, has forcefields that can withstand attacks from Galactus and regularly defeats entire teams of superheroes, including guys well outside Spidey’s league. There’s the time Peter defeated Firelord, but frankly that’s just bad writing. Unless you want to argue that Spidey is planetary, no number of punches should bring him down, I love Spidey - he’s my favourite superhero. But although he’s super powerful, in some cases he’s just outclassed - not that it’d stop him from trying mind you.
I absolutely love this game. I recently started a replay of it... although I have got to say... I absolutely love using the Red Suit as my main suit. I do switch between the Red and Black suits in combat, but my primary style takes full advantage of the Red Suit’s speed over the power based moves used by the Black Suit... there was always something so satisfying about going the Red suit path and then getting so good at using the Red Suit that it legitimately feels like you won the fight mostly using your own strength rather than the symbiote’s.... and when I DO use the Black Suit it is tempting to keep using it... such a great game in general.
I want a sequel to THIS game. I love the PS4 one, but I need this in my life. Free switching from symbiote to normal was awesome. I absolutely love seeing favorite heros and villains as symbiote versions of themselves. Fantastic game. My fav.
This is nostalgic. I remember playing it on wii and I still revisit it every now and then. My friend had it on his pc back in second grade and that’s when I found out aboutcit
I rember when this game was going to come out, i was 10 years old i was pumped up but sadly i did not have a pc or a console (or friend who owned one) to play the game. The trailers, gameplay, story, the ability to play with the black suit at your demand by just the press of a button... i remember even crying to my mom to buy a PC with this game. Ans now i just finished playing it on my ancient PS3 like past week... truly an amazing game!
I remember being betayed playing the ps2 like they lie to me. Thank god a year later i got an xbox 360 and the game i was soo happy and excited. The game and combat made me feel like spider-man.
For once, the Wii version was the exact same as it's console counterparts (with a few graphical and controller downgrades). It also had the added bonus of Spider-Tokens unlocking different exclusive suits (a Wii only feature, unless you can mod the PC version), including a Spider-Carnage replacement for the BlackSuit. I really liked seeing the small selection of alt-costumes on the Web Of Shadows Spider-Man in game model. The more angular and skinny art design on Spider-Man himself made the suits look really cool .
dbzfan1121 I really enjoyed using the wii remotes to swing it always felt right just swinging with my hands even though it didn’t fully imitate Spider-Man’s swing movement
This game was my childhood. I remember putting COUNTLESS hours into it. I have to have played it from start to finish at least 20 times. I sold my PS3 and all the games with it for the PS4 back in 2013 and I deeply regret that knowing how difficult it is to find this game today. It’s so nice to see my absolute favorite Spider-Man game getting the praise it deserved.
Glad someone finally gave this one a solid look. Played it so many times when i was young just cause the thought of symbiote versions of everybody was the coolest thing ever. Every roll of the credits i would long for a sequel, the twinkle of symbiote Rhino or Lizard or anyone in my eye, and it's a damn shame they never got the recognition they should have. Thanks for this'n, mista Light.
8:56 That's actually wrong! You can slide over the car really easily by holding 'E' as that is the button to do most of the parkour stuff. If you are holding 'E' while running at a car he immediately slides over it. And if you hold 'E' near a pole or a traffic light pole and you keep holding it, Spider-man slows down and then perches on them, looking really cool. Really nice video btw! I am binging most of your critiques due to quarantine!
Thank you for giving this game the credit it deserves. I remember loving it back in ’08 yet seeing all the negativity it was getting from “reviewers” like IGN. This is my favorite Spider-Man game hands down (although I have yet to play PS4 Spider-Man). Really the only negatives are Spideys voice, the choice and “morality” system, and the repetitive missions you had to do to progress the story. Great review man! Keep it up!
I remember buying this on PC and buying my first graphic card because obviously I didnt knew how PCs work and couldnt play it, up to this day I still keep my physical copy of this masterpiece
I remember watching this back before ps4 spidey came out and came back to watch it again. I feel like other than the obvious improvements PS4 spidey didn't really live up to the kind of swinging and combat web of shadows had. I am to this day in love with the swinging mechanics in web of shadows, PS4 spidey swinging of course looks and handles better but it always felt like flying with extra steps. WOS swinging had weight, you could mess up and splat on the floor or the walls, you could pick height over speed, you could swing around buildings and so forth. Combat feels more spiderman with a spidersense counter yes - but theres something simply magical about zipping to and kicking bad guys in the face one by one, picking up the last guy and physically attaching him to the wall. PS4 is also devoid of air combat unless its a boss. If I could get a combination of WOS and PS4 combat that would be magical. Miles Morales combat added some fun new additions but I still felt somewhat limited. PS4 looks prettier and captures a lot of the main points of spidey but WoS gives us way more expression capability.
Unpopular opinion: I really like the combat in this one, more so than Spider-man PS4. SMPS4 is the better game overall, but I just really love WoS's combat system like being able to switch from Classic to Black suit on the fly and that gives you so many options on how you want to beat enemies. The Web Chain system was also good, albeit it needed some polish because it felt repetitive.
yeah this game had a more fun combat. but spiderman ps4 is also great. like in the first 5-10 hours its amazing th, but then it loses its steam. idk both are great in different ways
What insomniac needs to achieve in Spider-Man 2 is to replicate a similar and better web strike system that is like the one from web of shadows....that'll give air combat a whole new meaning.
the combat system in SMPS4 is very generic when you consider how many games its ripping mechanics out of. Arkham obviously pioneered the system, and while SMPS4 makes Spidey more of a dodger than a counter attacker, they never were able to shed the idea that the combat was just Arkham or Shadow Of War but worse in many ways. Shadow of Mordor and War outshines the generic combat with their Nemesis systems, Mad Max has its setting and vehicular combat to break up the combat, and Arkham again, invented the combat system as a whole. SMPS4 outside of its combat only has a passable swing system. it felt good to explore for the duration of the game but swinging is lacking in depth. ive only started playing Web of Shadows today after downloading it off an abandonware site and like it better than SMPS4 already. SMPS4's advantage is mainly having Yuri Lowenthal as Spider-man and Laura Bailey as MJ, making those characters so much more fun and relatable than they are in Web of Shadows.
@@quinnmarchese6313 but that'll change in Spider-Man 2! ofcourse Spider-Man ps4's system isn't perfect, but i'd rather call it insomniac's foundation. You can aswell call it the prototype phase....in Spider-Man 2, i can highly see insomniac experimenting more mechanics, moves, and the things that we can do within this system. As Spider-Man ps4 made they're system, they dont really have to change anything drastic within the sequel but instead improve and go beyond within that system; so just give it time.
@@youngspecial64 Miles Morales represented the first opportunity to make it better and insomniac really _didn't._ nothing good comes out of just assuming itll be better in the sequel but you do have a point, it _could be_ im just keeping the expectations low
And to this day, it is still the best combat in the franchise. The Insomniac games may have better presentation, voices, and graphics, but their Arkham combat can't hold a candle to the seamless suit changing, variety of inputs, and player expression. This is definitely the Devil May Cry of Spider-Man games
This shit blew my mind when it came out. I remember thinking “this is the best Spider-Man game I’ve ever played.” Honestly I could probably still say that to this day. Might just have to find a copy.
This game was a underrated gem that did something I didn't expect, but really loved. I never thought I'd ever play as a black suit spiderman kicking ass like a psychopath. This game needs a remastering or a remake BAD.
For the longest time this was my favourite Spider-Man game. And I agree: A remaster or a Insomniac version of this game would be INCREDIBLE. But hey, symbiote will be in their next Spider-Man game, so we can dream
The black suit decision for the Wolverine symbiote fight could’ve been a great representation of spideys intelligence. Like imagine if it was written that Peter knew that ripping Wolverine in half would kill the symbiote but thanks to his healing factor Wolverine would be fine. It would show that while he’s more morally grey spidey ain’t evil and is actually becoming more cunning
Your description of the feelings post apocalyptic settings presents is perfect 👌👌👌 I put off beating it for months cause the atmosphere was just so anxiety producing
This game blew my mind when I was an edgy 14 year-old, and it still holds up for what it is. I cant really summarize why, but I think this game and Spider-man 2 in its own right have a charm that's missing from the clean-cut Insomniac title. In particular I love the relaxed low-key mood of Spider-man 2 and how the different super-villains have their own completely separate stories unrelated to the main plot
This is a fantastic video to acquaint yourself with Mr. Whitelight. His early style I would describe as more technical, pragmatic: divide the narrative by topics (gameplay, movement, combat, main and side activities, characters, story and plot), focus on single topic at once with masterful presentation of all the nuances, point out irregularities, inconsistencies and shortcomings in an attempt to indicate a way to improve the game, build upon what is already there and what is already good. He is not getting carried away on any of the topics, keeping it comprehensive but concise, critical but with praise and commend where credit is due. The game footage does not distract, does not simply play along with the commentary, but aims to complement, enhance the narrative, gives the necessary context and supplies with some little details not mentioned in the script. Even game soundtrack, the thing that many game critics and reviewers avoid appraising, complimenting or even mentioning for whatever reason, gets its deserved limelight. Where credit is due, it's due; where critique is necessary, it's present: that's the thing I want to see from my longform review, critique and analysis creators. In summary, this video is a work of a professional, an expert... but not yet a master, which he will become in the future. Whitelight will complement his pragmatism with symbolism and romanticism, provide his narrative with still unmatched sophistication and literary prowess, show his skill with words and diction, enhance the analytical and critical points with beauty and richness of the language. The question is... is he still capable of finding a balance between review, analysis and critique and pure fascination and infatuation with written word and aesthetics it creates...?
This game to me really expanded upon Spider-Man gameplay and mechanics and with its story i didn’t have a problem with people critique it but can’t deny it s influences helped make newer Spider-Man games what they are now
I remember after beating this game and looking at the concept art in the credits. I remember there was a Symbiote-Moon Knight design and I thought: “That would’ve been so cool to see in the game. Why wasn’t it there?” Looking back. It was either time restraints or it would not have mattered much to the story.
The group division part something devs need to relearn. Having enemies that have varying levels of threat rather than 200% hp bullet sponges is something people just dont comprehend.
I was so scared of those carnage looking symbiote as a little kid that I would stop playing the story right before that mission that introduces them and just explore the map. Now? I'm still kinda scared but not even close to how I was back then
Yea Spider-man web of shadow is still is the best spider-man game that made me feel like spider-man from the incredible web swinging and cinematic combat, that the next spider-man game like shattered dimension, while fun but felt like a down grade on what spider-man web of shadows bring to the franchise on its amazing gameplay. While people are hyping up spider-man ps4 but ignore great spidey games like ultimate spider-man that get no praise for shocking reason and only talks about spider-man 2 movie game, "must be how it brought the web swinging sticking to walls" spider-man web of shadow or even spider-man ps1, from what i seen i don't think they will even copy the same web swinging mechanic that old developers created from spider-man 2, ultimate spider-man and spider-man web of shadow. Ever since they brought back spider-man to open world in amazing spider-man 1 game, you can feel it's not the same level of freedom when it comes to web swinging like the original web swinging mechanic from the other games. It felt like gravity has zero freedom, and felt like you're force to be in the same free falling animation like it was stock and limited not amount of freedom like the other spidey games, especially doing this arkham combat in a spidey game, you think it would fit but it don't it just makes spider-man limited to what he fully can do, like spider-man web of shadow, looks like spider-man is free dancing and kicking and doing shit you see on stage on wrestling like rey mysterio then being spider-man, man ultimate spider-man combat gameplay is more spider-man then today spider-man games combat try to be arkham. Which a lot of fail games try to do arkham combat, just don't fit. No spider-man ps4 fail to beat spider-man web of shadows gameplay in a mile. And double any spider-man games will ever beat spider-man web of shadows brutal and fast gameplay any time soon, reason why spider-man web of shadow is still my favorite spider-man game because one of the reasons no other spidey game has match it's level of gameplay, even got an interesting story that you witness the impact and change of the city while you continue on the game. Living your allies and main villians having a sign of no hope. Each character has an amazing 3d model, from spider-man angry eyes that i always like and prepared similar to spider-man first appearance from the comics. If only the spider-man ps1 voice spidey in this game, wolverine detail mask and costume and bad ass voice actor, black cat which still looks like the best black cat ever look in a spider-man game and voice actress and venom design could of been better like how he suppose to look in the concept art with his symbiote looking like a rotten skin. Which looks like the ps2 venom model had but not in the ps3 and xbox 360 version sadly. I'm ok if venom didn't have the same spider-man white logo on his chest for the game, for me i saw it that venom was evolving at the time of this game. And his spidey logo in his chest has spread and is evolding which what happen to venom later on the game and main goal to infect many people in the city with his symbiote like the savage animalistic alien that he is destine to be. the story for the game has potential it just looks like they miss the mark when it comes to performance and how they handle that was suppose to be a very must the best spider-man video game story. But the way you say and tell the story of spider-man web of shadow is what exactly the developers game suppose to be plan and told. It just looks like they didn't handle the miss performance right is all. Anyway the game is obsolutely amazing from beginning to end. And yea you're right on the addicting spidey token collecting, spend like 3 years collection a lot of them just to fully health spider-man and the web swinging boost to the fullest. Looks like i have finally achieve spider-man full health bar and web swinging boost to the max but there still more spidey tokens in the city. I can't tell if i need to collect them or the fact the developers put too many spidey tokens and just had a max number where you can finally have the max full health and web swinging boost but has no clue how many random spidey tokens they put all over the city in the game. It's a dawn shame, wish shaba gets a chance to make another spider-man game that they got fully flesh out on making a 100% spider-man experience in a video game. Sadly they never will just like neversoft back in spider-man ps1 what we got left is what they made from there first to last spider-man game we deeply cherish.
Yep. THIS spiderman could easily beats Thanos. (When you can see he fights giant mech in seconds, beats an ultra powerful symbiotic armored wolverine , and taking bombs from the shields planes does nothing on him). This character is so OP.
I remember finding a single copy of this game at a store for an absurdly cheap price about 5 years ago in my last days of playing on the 360. I got it because why not and it was easily the best purchase of that kind I've ever made. Played it non-stop for weeks. I could not believe I had never heard of it and how cheap it was, literally the best Spiderman game I've ever played.
Despite never having finished the game, this is by far my favourite Spider-Man game, with Edge of Time being a close second. I just love the grittiness of the game, the layers to the combat, everything. It's so good
I personally think that this is probably one of the darkest games about Spider-Man (the plot is in the spirit of a zombie apocalypse + the final battle with a giant venom, which scared me to goosebumps)
5th time watching this video. Web of Shadows was my first video game ever. I will never forget how it changed me as a kid and now. I later noticed how nobody speaks about this game, and I wondered why. Thank you for this amazing, amazing video.
Thanks for your hard work, and I look forward to the verdict.
Really excellent review. A TRUE gamer. Thanks so much for really understanding games and sharing that here. A vary rare thing.

I remember playing the wolverine fight but he got in the corner near the alley. also with a less anoying spidey, its pretty much the only thing in the game that doesnt work for me
Hopefully we get this with Marvel’s Spiderman 2, and we’ll also get the added bonus of having Miles Morales there too. I’ve been saying for a while that the sequel should be a spiritual successor to Web of Shadows; they can even include Wolverine in the game now that his game is announced

The new games are so so so railroaded with the movement compared to this game
Sliding over cars, wait wha- After all these years of owning this game, farming useless amounts of XP from several replays, collecting every single spider token (what a chore that was) and sinking unhealthy amount of hours into free roaming cuz the swinging physics were just so cewl, I find a feature I never noticed before, huh.
Straight Busta! I know right,I have played this game 4 times and I never noticed
Same with counters. I never did them. Rarely blocked, tho, so I never really used that feature haha
I mean, its a pretty useless feature anyhow, i don't see myself using it ever
Spiderman acknowledges this and agrees to keep an eye out for him acting stranger than usual (implying that Symbiote Vulture was a thing for much longer than the game explicitly let on).
yeah but its kind of weird that you can still call for vulture as an ally when the vulterings already started
Unpopular opinion: I actually love Spider-man's voice in this. The extreme shift in his voice when he's usual witty self versus the dark angsty symbiote influenced version of him is immersive to me, and I feel like it was a smart choice to make, despite all the hate the game gets for it
True, symbiote Spiderman voice is soo full of emo which is awesome
Yea Idk what people were talking about. His voice was really good during the evil path especially.
I feel ya, i dont mind the voice at all tbh
I dont really mind it
I love Mike vaughn
It's interesting to see how critics bashed it while seeing how much fans praised it
There's a reason why I agree with critics here. The people who are praising this version of Web of Shadows should be praising the combat first and last - because the story, the voice acting, the graphics and the morality system are half-assed at best and atrocious at worst.

“This isn’t Devil May Cry, they’re looking to see Spider-Man beat up bad guys in the coolest way possible”
You just described Devil May Cry
Yeah I didn't understand either. That's litterally the point of DMC. And it didn't feel like he was sarcastic
Devil May Cry has Spider-Man?
Almost when your jumping and shooting
I think he ment without needing a lot of skill with the game
To be fair, I've never played DMC. I was referring to the skill based combat in DMC vs the beat em up style combat here. What would be a better comparison?
Seems like most people don't understand the point in the choice system.
In general, the point is indeed to alter the story, but the true purpose of this system is to align yourself with "hero" or "villian" allies. Choosing red or black choice will have your alignment meter fully one-sided. It can be altered with time by playing with the opposite suit as you mentioned in your video.
That's why some choices don't really matter to the story or even makes things confusing:
- The choices against Vulture: Red choice means you're doing the right thing by leaving him to the police to handle.
@@shtrudel9498 It doesn't really affect shit tho, that's the point.
At 6:05, "Black Cat has... a mask that doesn't make her look like a Muppet for once." That is the single greatest quote in this entire video.

Wait. So this is a better version of the first Prototype? How have I never played this?
The similarities between this and prototype are shocking.
I never could play Prototype for too long given how similar and underwhelming it felt compared to Web of Shadows.

Shaba games developed this game in just 17 months??!? Imagine giving them 4 years... Insomniac would have been put to shame by these guys

Guillaume Tizon that’s a funny joke
@Mark Donald That is the dumbest shit I've ever heard... And I've read Ultimatum
- Fights as hard as he can against Hulk, trying to save MJ, but to no avail: m.imgur.com/a/vV2hx
- Barely hurts Angrir (aka the Thing) - m.imgur.com/a/Vg1Gk1m when he’s pushing his limits, but Thor later kills him with ease: m.imgur.com/a/DFxOJ7k
- Doesn’t faze Juggernaut, doesn’t even budge him - m.imgur.com/wsQwPfM
Spidey beating guys like Firelord?
And Pete literally says that he can’t beat Thing: comicvine1.cbsistatic.com/uploads/original/8/80103/2226655-angrirvsspiderman3.jpg (Second panel, top left; ‘I can’t go toe-to-toe with the Thing on his worst day’)
You say it’s misleading because Spider-Man was hurt, but you realise that he’s hurt worst _because_ of that fight right?
This is my favorite Spiderman game of all time. Reviewed by one of my favorite reviewers. Perfection.

What did we 'miss?'
Nothing, the only thing I had to replace was a 30 second clip at the end.

The amount of effort you put into these videos is staggering. Keep up the good work!

I remember buying this game as a kid and legitimately not knowing a single thing about it other than it was a spiderman game. Watching the city being taken over by the symbiote was terrifying but so intriguing and I couldn't put the game down
same. my dad just saw it was a spider-man game and i like spider-man so he just bought it for the ps3 lol
The concept of transforming to symbiote suit in real-time with just one button was so genius, along with it's own skills and combat style. Basically every Spider-Man fan's dream come true. I'm really hoping Spider-Man 2 (2023) will have something similar.

Oh no
this combat system is so underrated :(
Yep.
THIS spiderman could easily beats Thanos. (When you can see he fights giant mech in seconds, beats an ultra powerful symbiotic armored wolverine , and taking bombs from the shields planes does nothing on him).
This character is so OP.
They actually take advantage of the canonic superstrength of Spider-Man.
Unless you want to argue that Spidey is planetary, no number of punches should bring him down,
I love Spidey - he’s my favourite superhero.

I still think its the best Spiderman webswinging experience.
The way gravity and speed comes into play is just superior.
Spiderman ps4 as the best webswinging imo.

This is nostalgic. I remember playing it on wii and I still revisit it every now and then. My friend had it on his pc back in second grade and that’s when I found out aboutcit
I suddenly remembered this game today and I love this, I totally agree about how good it is
I rember when this game was going to come out, i was 10 years old i was pumped up but sadly i did not have a pc or a console (or friend who owned one) to play the game.
The trailers, gameplay, story, the ability to play with the black suit at your demand by just the press of a button... i remember even crying to my mom to buy a PC with this game.
Ans now i just finished playing it on my ancient PS3 like past week... truly an amazing game!
i remember when i got it for ps2, come to find out it was a 2.5d scroller, like wtf
Great, now I need to replay my favorite Spider-Man game again. Excellent video!
god forbid if anyone played the ps2 version

Jacob Chavez me too. I thought it was gonna look like the commercials lmao. I was young
It’s so nice to see my absolute favorite Spider-Man game getting the praise it deserved.
same. Thankfully i still have my wii version.
Thanks for this'n, mista Light.
always was surprised there wasnt even a single scene with Carnage in this

That's actually wrong!
37:35 I thought I knew everything about the game but I never noticed Wolverine !!great video dude I subbed
PS4 looks prettier and captures a lot of the main points of spidey but WoS gives us way more expression capability.
ps4 looks better. web of shadows feels better

But hey, symbiote will be in their next Spider-Man game, so we can dream
inb4 this gets taken down again, God forbid.
25:11 is the reason web of shadows has the best writing of any spider-man game

I love using the black suit that I’ve become pretty much addicted to using the Symbiote Suit and I Love it
This game to me really expanded upon Spider-Man gameplay and mechanics and with its story i didn’t have a problem with people critique it but can’t deny it s influences helped make newer Spider-Man games what they are now
I could listen to you talk about video games for hours... aaand that’s exactly what I just did
I remember after beating this game and looking at the concept art in the credits. I remember there was a Symbiote-Moon Knight design and I thought:
“That would’ve been so cool to see in the game. Why wasn’t it there?”
Looking back. It was either time restraints or it would not have mattered much to the story.
it was 100% time restraints
I swear, symbiote spidey is the best Superman that we’ve ever had in videogames
Im back here after he called moon night getting a netflix show. How did he do that shit? Great video Pimp.
I love using the damaged suit mod during the invasion portion of game, it really adds to the immersion
Yep.

The five gum ads really add to the immersion.
My only problem with this game was some of the awkward voice delivery and cutscenes otherwise it's sooo sick
I don't know why everyone doesn't like Spider-Man's voice, this line right here(29:37) is genuinely hilarious to me with how he sounds
That “neck snap” is actually a burst of tendrils as he’s holding them.
5th time watching this video. Web of Shadows was my first video game ever. I will never forget how it changed me as a kid and now. I later noticed how nobody speaks about this game, and I wondered why. Thank you for this amazing, amazing video.
