There's this place in here in the Netherlands that has a big open area where a lot of festivals are held. Dance, general Pop, Hip-Hop, Metal, etc... The surrounding area of course has to deal with the festivals and the numbers show that when it's time for the Metal shows, the people there can breathe easily. Hardly any vandalism, violence or other disturbances compared to every other festival. I think the worst effect it has is the fact that a lot of bars run out of beer...

✨💖✨Just can’t understand why some folks are so shocked to find out that some of us sweet, little old ladies like to rock out. There are a lot of bands that were new and challenging norms and preconceived notions when I was young, and they just keep on going-maybe with a little less head banging, because, well, arthritis. Always keep in mind that there was a time when a waltz shook the world polite society. Downright scandalous.

Something I don’t see discussed enough is how she’s minimized her movement to maximize her agility to adapt to a songs demands. It’s something a lot of drummers don’t discuss is getting older and adapting to getting slower and weaker with age. Compare her arm movement to the average drummer and you’ll see what I’m talking about when comes to the strength of her hits.

The thing she kills me with is the economy of movement. I played with an old-timer jazz drummer named Art Anton in the late 90s after he retired to my hometown of Yakima. He was the same way. He would absolutely kill the doubles, just looked like he was sitting rock still and absolutely blowing the crowd away. He was far and away the best drummer I had the honor of playing with during my jazz days. I didn't know it at the time but he had played with a lot of the greats including Stan Kenton and Frank Zappa.

I love the fact that you use the phrase, economy of movement. I love playing harmonica or the harp. 1978 I was invited on stage by Corky Siegel at a place in Chicago called Shaughnessy's Take Five Bar. We did a song by John Mayall and I'm not really sure what song it was because I was feeling no pain after many Guinnesses. I know it was not "Room to Move".

Obviously you can't judge a book by it's cover - Ms. Taylor looks like a cross between the Cool Aunt and the sweet lady who stops by the Girl Scout cookie table to tell everyone all about her time in the Scouts when she was young. She is KILLING IT and she has the sweetest smile all while she absolutely SLAYS.

I agree. Listening to rock drummers is very tiring. Why? Because they all sound the same. The Buddy Rich coverage is what drumming is all about.
I have no idea who "66Samus" is, but very clearly .....CLUELESS!!! I guess "66Samus" has never seen a practice drum pad before ...or metal practice sticks ....or a music stand .....the kind of stand that holds music ......for most MUSICIANS when they actually PLAY MUSIC .....and READ MUSIC ...... and PRACTICE by READING DRUMMING RUDIMENTS BOOKS .....when they actually sit down to PRACTICE what's written in the rudiment books .....NOT put on some rock and hammer along.
The SHOCKED LOOK on "66Samus" face at 40 seconds ..."I think I know where this is going". Sure, ....you might ....but from your facial expression, you have never heard of a single-stroke, or double-stroke, or triple-stroke roll before .....and probably wouldn't know it if you saw it on manuscript either.
6:40 is called "stick control" ....something very few ....to no ....rock drummer has a clue about. ....and the notes are called "grace notes". Where do you people come up with "ghost notes"???? It is NOT "another word for it" .....once again CLUELESS.
Who the hell am I to laugh at ALL videos like these? I started percussion BEFORE Dorothea Taylor ...65 years ago ....with JIM BLACKLEY (you might want to look that up to understand) ...at the age of SIX, and studied with him for TEN YEARS. Listening to the constant verbal interruptions throughout this video ....just demonstrates one thing .....untrained ignorance. And the "Steve Gadd" snare? "Yamaha"???? Try ROGERS DYNASONIC on for size ..........no "name-dropping" needed.
      hahahahahaha
WELL DONE DOROTHEA......and I still have ALL my drum rudiment books!

So good.. Dorothea is an absolute Legend 🙌🏼💯 You didn't show the full intro to the Down with the Sickness video where she walks into a music store and is looked up and down as an older lady, then gets directed to the violins. She walks into another place that gives her the same treatment. Then at the end of her Disturbed session, she talks about not judging a book by the cover, and as she said after playing Blink, that you're never too old or too young. Just a really cool ass lady that we could all learn a lot from about life in general. Thanks for posting this video, it's in my top 3 favorite Drumeo vids of all time 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Still got my old drumset which really needs new drumheads (which are 20 years old) :) whenever i see you playing the drums tears come roll of my cheeks cause of the overall enyoyment you show when you playing this istrument. This is more than passion in music. I wish you all luck and great things in the world and hope you encourage more and more people with your natural kind of playing YOUR instrument and having fun with it. There should be more people like you in the world which shows that absolutely nothing is impossible regarding of age or something else ! She was recruited from Local 47 because drums could not be faked on the soundstage.
In later years she owned a nightclub in Redway California that started as a jazz club.
Joani ended up booking every kind of music you can imagine and often sat in.
Always dressed like a 50's music icon should be, she was quite the sight sitting in with metal, punk and really any kind of band you could imagine.
She could play Moby Dick note for note.

I used to play in a band with my husband. I was the vocals and my husband was the drummer and now our 6 y.o. daughter is showing interest with percussion instruments and beats in general. Man, I can only imagine how cool would it be to have a mom or a grandma thats this bad-ass with the drums. I bet we'd be playing together so much.

This is my first time seeing one of your videos, and I enjoyed it immensely! I love her solid skills and your joy of seeing her play. A drum kit doesn't fit in my budget (or apartment) right now, but I'll fulfill my dream of playing drums someday! I'll just keep watching your videos until then 😁

    Dorothea was playing beautifully. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

I have always loved drums. When I was little my parents worked at a country bar that had live bands and they would be the ones to let the bands in to set up. If it was in the afternoon that they set up they would take me along and while I did enjoy the steel guitar my favorite was the drums. There were many days I spent up at the drums, with the band's permission, playing around on the drums. Some of the drummers would teach me stuff here and there. I got to be good enough the band members would mention to my parents that I should take lessons. Unfortunately we didn't have the extra money for that kind of things. Watching this makes me want to look into lessons now as my love for drums (and drummers) has never gone away. Although I'm not sure my cats or neighbors would be happy about that. 🤣 She's right though it's never too late.

@@Explosivepiss That's a good one. Let's put our safe space word away now. You said it warms your heart to watch "old people" doing what they love. I said "come watch me skate, I'll warm your fuckin heart" What? me skating at my age don't do it for ya. Dorothea is a professional drummer not some novelty on late night tv that is how she pays the bills teaching and drumming. Of course she loves what she is doing. Hopefully when you get there you can still do what you love. And If your lucky you can pay the bills doing something you love. Age is just a number.

it sounds so great because she has the pocket of a session musician
pocket and adapting to what the song requires in terms of dynamics and feel is their game.
the extreme/sports element to making music is not all that relevant to them, they play what is expected mostly
as said before: "Fills bring the thrills, but grooves pay the bills"
playing pocket is what brings home the bacon
