Thanks Butch. At least it was small! I have a bunch of cherry burls but they are super hard and super dense and super cracked. I put a good sized one on and went after it for about an hour before I gave up. Too many cracks to use without resin

Lowe’s has a bag of rags from T shirts that I have used for many years. Never had a problem with it. Used it in my shop building furniture for all applications of finishes.
Hi Ralph! I’ve tried a bunch of different things and I’m wondering if part of the issue I’m having is mainly the finish itself. I have a can of Tried & True Original Wood Finish (polymerized linseed oil & beeswax) that I’ve had for literally close to 20 years. They say it doesn’t actually have a shelf life, and I agree with that die he most part but it has gotten really thick. It performs fine but really drags the cloth pretty heavily and leaves fuzzy bits. I’ll have to warm it up and see if I can get it closer to it’s original consistency or suck it up and buy a new can 😂
Hi Lisa, that bowl although not functional is a real beauty, I love all the bark inclusions and the grain along with the different colors of wood. A finish I just started using is one called Howards feed and wax and it really brings out the grain color and leaves a matte finish! Thanks for the great video and keep them coming! Cheers Al

Really beautiful, these gnarly girls are some of my favorite bowls. I also use cut up old t-shirts but of course the cut ends to have some loose threads and lint.

This turned out absolutely amazing! For what it's worth, I've always had issues with my drive spur holding on, the best way I have found to make it work is to mark the 4 points on your piece and use a small chisel or flathead screwdriver to make them deep enough that it can't let go. It takes an extra few minutes at the start, but I rarely have to stop using this method! Oh, and for the linty bits, I just use a microfibre facecloth from the dollar store.

Sorry about the loss of your dog - they are definitely part of the family. Bailey doesn’t hang out in the shop with me cuz he’s still youngish (at almost 4!) and he gets into everything. Maybe I’ll make a couple of video shorts with him and post them 😁
I'm amazed when I see you females turning awkward, dangerous pieces like this. I think men do this because of hormone surges or because they sometimes don't have the good sense to avoid danger but ladies don't usually have those manly issues. So I must think you do it to expand the limits of your craft. That's real art and not just teetering on the edge. Excellent work!

Hi Mike! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I use old t-shirts but still have some lint issues with some finishes. I bought a pair of pantyhose as someone suggested holding the t-shirt inside a piece of that to contain the lint - I’m going to give it a shot!
I’ve heard of bamboo cloth. Natural material manufactures might have something for lack of Lint. Really live this piece. All national look is perfect. Thank You
Gorgeous work! Natural art bowls are the greatest test of your ability to visualize a finished result while looking at the rough blank. For rubbing pads that do not leave lint check out luthier supply shops, 3M automotive microfibre pads work but are very expensive.
Thank you Charlie, I really appreciate it. I’ll have to check maybe Grizzly, I know they have luthier supplies. I used to buy surgical gauze I think it was but when I was using General Finishes Arm-R-Seal on my bandsaw boxes, etc t-shirts worked fine. I don’t use that on my turnings, and I’m mostly having trouble with a very thick and almost sticky finish so I may replace that can and see if that helps.
Hi there! That’s another little trick I learned from one of Lyle Jamieson’s videos and it works great! It does sometimes get away from me a little bit though - it’s a bit heavy and unwieldy for me to grip and I end up pulling the trigger when I don’t mean too 😂
I use a 1" diameter spade bit to drill down to good solid wood once i find center. Then I drive my spur in with a mallet. Fits really tight and kinda limits ability to adjust live center location, but rarely loses bite. (Love your work, BTW)
Nice bowl Lisa, certainly a lot better than what I just did before watching this. An afternoon's work ruined in seconds. But I also made the pedestal bowl for my Sister and its a great hit!

Hi Steven! I have a ton of old, well worn cotton t-shirts which *should* be lint free but I still end up with little fuzzy bits 🤷♀️. This isn’t a huge deal for most of the finishes I use, but still!
I have used Lyle’s method for seating bowl blanks on wet blanks up to 18” diameter and 7” thick on my PM 3520C without any live center sticking issues. I use a jumbo spur which gives a very good bite and doesn’t bore into the blank. On the lint free rag topic, I cut up old t shirts and then fo,d them so I am finishing with a folded edge, not the cut edge, and they work great.
Hi Mike! I see lots of other turners use the tailstock to seat the spur drive but man mine is not happy about that! I’ll have to check with Laguna and see if I’m doing something wrong. That’s how I do the t-shirts too - I think I have trouble with the thicker finishes. May try wrapping the t-shirts in some pantyhose and see if that will contain some of the linty bits with the thicker stuff 😃
Nice work... I have a Laguna as well and I no longer use their live center, having the same problem as you. I believe it has to do with them coating/finishing the taper which is designed to be a metal to metal fit. I went with a Robust and have had a much better experience. The Easywood Tools live center is identical to the Robust. Other than the name on the side I cannot tell a difference. Along the way I have ended up with both. LOL
Those things are not cheap! I’m going to hold off on replacing the live center as I only have trouble if I’m putting a lot of pressure on it, and I need to buy things - want a 4” Robust tool rest and a hollowing system and I need to build a steady rest and you can never have too many tools and... 😂
Absolutely gorgeous bowl! I think pieces like these should be a little thicker. As for your live center sticking, maybe try cleaning the morse taper in the tail stock. Just a thought.
Hi Duane, thank you - I don’t mind pieces having a little weight to them and I’ve decided I’d rather leave it a bit thick and not blow it up! Morse tapers are clean and smooth - gonna have to do a little research and also check with Laguna-maybe I’m doing something wrong 🤷♀️
A tiny piece of dirt or wood grit inside the head or tail stock can jam a clean MT insert esp. after pressure applied. Suggest a careful look at the inside of the “barrels”. Lovely piece at the end with superb figure. Hope this helps. Brian

Assume burl bowl Lisa. I have the same problem with not being able to eject my live center from my tail stock. I have no trouble ejecting my Jacobs chuck. I found that if I place a large square shaft screw driver between the back of the live center, back the live center all the way to the tail stock and give the screw driver a snap, the live center pops out of the morse taper. One other thing, the morse tapers must be kept meticulously clean.
Hi Jack! I’ve had this problem with my live center once before, and that time I wasn’t surprised I’d gotten it stuck as I was really using it to try and set the spur drive further into the wood 😬 Haven’t had any issues since, until this bowl. The Morse taper is clean and smooth and there aren’t any burrs, etc on the tail center though I only have this happen with this tail center - my Jacobs chucks are fine but their arbors? shafts? (Not sure what why call the taper part) are longer. One thing I do know is that it’s moving the set screw on the back end of the tailstock by the hand wheel. Had to reposition it and tighten that back up, and then put the knockout bar thru and hit that with a mallet. Didn’t come out the first time so I heated it up a little with a hair dryer and then gave it a few pretty hefty bashes with the plastic mallet and it finally broke loose. I don’t know how the self-ejection mechanism works but I feel like when I’m using the tailstock with something that needs a fair amount of holding pressure, it pushes the tail center too far in and it definitely displaces the set screw. I’ll have to see if I can get an exploded diagram or something and figure out what the deal is - I don’t want this to happen every time I need to use a spur drive and right now that’s about where I am 🤷♀️

You might consider joining the AAW (American Association of Woodturners). It's got a lot of great resources for learning and a forum where you can ask and answer questions. Chances are, if you are having a problem with something, someone else has/is having that same problem. There are some *very* talented and experienced turners there. The journal they publish is first-class, too.

Hi Mike! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I use old t-shirts but still have some lint issues with some finishes. I bought a pair of pantyhose as someone suggested holding the t-shirt inside a piece of that to contain the lint - I’m going to give it a shot!

Gorgeous work! Natural art bowls are the greatest test of your ability to visualize a finished result while looking at the rough blank. For rubbing pads that do not leave lint check out luthier supply shops, 3M automotive microfibre pads work but are very expensive.
Thank you Charlie, I really appreciate it. I’ll have to check maybe Grizzly, I know they have luthier supplies. I used to buy surgical gauze I think it was but when I was using General Finishes Arm-R-Seal on my bandsaw boxes, etc t-shirts worked fine. I don’t use that on my turnings, and I’m mostly having trouble with a very thick and almost sticky finish so I may replace that can and see if that helps.

Hi there! That’s another little trick I learned from one of Lyle Jamieson’s videos and it works great! It does sometimes get away from me a little bit though - it’s a bit heavy and unwieldy for me to grip and I end up pulling the trigger when I don’t mean too 😂

I use a 1" diameter spade bit to drill down to good solid wood once i find center. Then I drive my spur in with a mallet. Fits really tight and kinda limits ability to adjust live center location, but rarely loses bite. (Love your work, BTW)

Hi Steven! I have a ton of old, well worn cotton t-shirts which *should* be lint free but I still end up with little fuzzy bits 🤷♀️. This isn’t a huge deal for most of the finishes I use, but still!

I have used Lyle’s method for seating bowl blanks on wet blanks up to 18” diameter and 7” thick on my PM 3520C without any live center sticking issues. I use a jumbo spur which gives a very good bite and doesn’t bore into the blank. On the lint free rag topic, I cut up old t shirts and then fo,d them so I am finishing with a folded edge, not the cut edge, and they work great.
Hi Mike! I see lots of other turners use the tailstock to seat the spur drive but man mine is not happy about that! I’ll have to check with Laguna and see if I’m doing something wrong.
That’s how I do the t-shirts too - I think I have trouble with the thicker finishes. May try wrapping the t-shirts in some pantyhose and see if that will contain some of the linty bits with the thicker stuff 😃

Nice work... I have a Laguna as well and I no longer use their live center, having the same problem as you. I believe it has to do with them coating/finishing the taper which is designed to be a metal to metal fit. I went with a Robust and have had a much better experience. The Easywood Tools live center is identical to the Robust. Other than the name on the side I cannot tell a difference. Along the way I have ended up with both. LOL
Those things are not cheap! I’m going to hold off on replacing the live center as I only have trouble if I’m putting a lot of pressure on it, and I need to buy things - want a 4” Robust tool rest and a hollowing system and I need to build a steady rest and you can never have too many tools and... 😂

Absolutely gorgeous bowl! I think pieces like these should be a little thicker. As for your live center sticking, maybe try cleaning the morse taper in the tail stock. Just a thought.
Hi Duane, thank you - I don’t mind pieces having a little weight to them and I’ve decided I’d rather leave it a bit thick and not blow it up! Morse tapers are clean and smooth - gonna have to do a little research and also check with Laguna-maybe I’m doing something wrong 🤷♀️
A tiny piece of dirt or wood grit inside the head or tail stock can jam a clean MT insert esp. after pressure applied. Suggest a careful look at the inside of the “barrels”. Lovely piece at the end with superb figure. Hope this helps. Brian

Assume burl bowl Lisa. I have the same problem with not being able to eject my live center from my tail stock. I have no trouble ejecting my Jacobs chuck. I found that if I place a large square shaft screw driver between the back of the live center, back the live center all the way to the tail stock and give the screw driver a snap, the live center pops out of the morse taper. One other thing, the morse tapers must be kept meticulously clean.
Hi Jack! I’ve had this problem with my live center once before, and that time I wasn’t surprised I’d gotten it stuck as I was really using it to try and set the spur drive further into the wood 😬
Haven’t had any issues since, until this bowl. The Morse taper is clean and smooth and there aren’t any burrs, etc on the tail center though I only have this happen with this tail center - my Jacobs chucks are fine but their arbors? shafts? (Not sure what why call the taper part) are longer. One thing I do know is that it’s moving the set screw on the back end of the tailstock by the hand wheel. Had to reposition it and tighten that back up, and then put the knockout bar thru and hit that with a mallet. Didn’t come out the first time so I heated it up a little with a hair dryer and then gave it a few pretty hefty bashes with the plastic mallet and it finally broke loose. I don’t know how the self-ejection mechanism works but I feel like when I’m using the tailstock with something that needs a fair amount of holding pressure, it pushes the tail center too far in and it definitely displaces the set screw. I’ll have to see if I can get an exploded diagram or something and figure out what the deal is - I don’t want this to happen every time I need to use a spur drive and right now that’s about where I am 🤷♀️

You might consider joining the AAW (American Association of Woodturners). It's got a lot of great resources for learning and a forum where you can ask and answer questions. Chances are, if you are having a problem with something, someone else has/is having that same problem. There are some *very* talented and experienced turners there. The journal they publish is first-class, too.
