Wardrobe Design for the

  • When you’re gonna shoot a movie (or in this case, a teaser), you gotta put actors in costumes. Duh. 💥More below!⬇
    I am not a wardrobe designer (you probably aren’t either - altho you might be, idk) and so I need to collaborate with someone much better than myself at creating wardrobe!
    Debradawn Shockey is a massively talented wardrobe designer who has created wardrobe for film and stage for over 30 years. And she’s a massively fun person to be around. The way she whips up wardrobe from piles and piles of odd pieces she’s collected and/or fabricated over the years is wonderful to watch happen.
    Together, we dialed in the look of the wardrobe for our two ranger characters that are going to be in the teaser, keeping in mind that at this point this is a no-budget project - and she knocks it out of the park.

    Having worked with Debradawn, I absolutely can say that she makes every production better. She works tirelessly and she has been my go to girl for years. She is also a wonderful set dresser and has saved my ass on more than one occasion.

    It reminds me of my theatre days. I still remember trying to hide a mic in many of the costumes and making sure none of the sound equipment was exposed. Back in 99. I helped with a outdoor Shakespeare production. The nightmare of antennas from the wireless mics still haunts me. Debradawn sure does seem to love her work. There is a lot of care and love that she puts into her costumes and the people she is working with. You have a real Gem working with you. Your model for the costumes was sure showing a lot of patients. The whole idea of people working around and talking about the costumes and having to stay still and not get bored or impatient can be tedious and sometimes taxing for some people.

      Shakespeare in the park! Yes being a stand-in is all things you said lol (but invaluable to production too lol).

    Earth tones FTW for rangers. Pretty cool! I also appreciate that this was like watching the one kid in class that doesn't have to be told to "sit still!" All the time. I envy that skill set and still work on it today.

    I can't begin to tell you how much I was looking forward to this video, and it really delivered. The enthusiasm of everyone involved, the costumes, just the whole vibe. It's contagious and it's amazing and I'm here for it! Go make that film guys!!!
    Also, I got to add, the remark of ''don't buy it I have it'' was a good one but after seeing some of the previous videos I don't think it will be adopted 😁

    Oh boy…this was a really good one! I loved that you took us on this adventure, but especially that you discussed your decisions and why you made them. It was great fun…and it was long! I so look forward to the next one. I think you may have spoiled your audience because we are going to want more of the same. DebraDawn is epic. If I was rich (or if I won the lottery), I’d fly her across the United States, and hire her to dress me. Dream on.
    Keep up the good work, buckaroo!
    Have a great day. 😊 And thank you.
    PS. On the next one do we get to see the make up artist and all the available tattoos, and your decisions, for the characters’ face and hands? I hope so. Don’t fail me now…

      Right on! And Debradawn would dress you within an inch if your life lol. Yes the makeup video will have that stuff but it’ll be shorter I think, not as much going on. I haven’t started the edit yet but hopefully we caught the same level of interaction.🏴‍☠️🍻

      @@tabletopalchemy it’s so much fun being part of your community. Being born and bred in the south suburbs of Chicago, you bring me fascinating stuff I would never have seen before.
      And now, if my fantasy trilogy of books that were published WAY back in the day, ever happen to get made into a film, I have you and Debra Dawn in my back pocket. Who knew?!
      Thank you, good buddy!❤️

    It's definitely got a "movie/screen" cool look. But (as a historic reenactor), it always somewhat disappoints me to see excessive stuff in fantasy costumes without purpose. Like having a leather water bottle on a strap instead of just an extra belt... or maybe make the texture/fringe fabrics more natural colours for the "purpose" of camouflage (the shapes are good for the purpose, but black is not).
    I get it's fantasy, but if you watch some of the best fantasy (costuming-wise), there is often actual, or implied function in the gear (thinking Mortensen's Aragorn here). There are groups out there that actually do Middle-Earth ranger treks (hiking/camping weekends in fantasy gear). Maybe try and find your way into some of those groups to get some vibes on blending fantasy-look, with function.

      @tabletopalchemy  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I totally get where you’re coming from, yep. There’s a guy in Germany who fabricates really nice suits of armor that are mixed leather and steel and would be my first choice to use and would be much more in line with a visually compelling real world aesthetic… but they are cost prohibitive at this stage. I also do personally like the idea of these guys having to pack a lot of stuff out into the field with them for long jaunts.🍻

    Hmm, here’s a thing I’ve been wondering about regarding the film industry in general, how does the fee/payment system work for someone like the wardrobe person here - are they hired on the project based on a locked price quote or do they invoice by the hour or … for something like this initial wardrobe testing is that done as part of a bigger project price agreed upon in advance?

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I think 99% of the time department heads negotiate a “project” fee. This may or may not include materials, pre-production, etc. Hourly stuff comes into play for “below the line” positions but then there’s union (typically minimum day rates for 8 hours + hourly overtime) vs non-union (typically flat rates). It kind of all depends lol

    • @AndreSjoberg
      @AndreSjoberg 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@tabletopalchemy Hahahaha, yeah, just like with all types of creative businessing :) I would imagine for a «smaller» project like the teaser it would be easier to do like a project price including prep, 1-2 days of fitting, a day for customizations etc and 1-2 days on set as a locked project fee or something :)

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @AndreSjoberg totally - most of the creatives on this teaser are working pro bono, we’re all working toward the feature, there is essentially no budget for any of this development stage. I’ll break that down once we get the teaser in the can. Certain costs can’t be avoided like travel or meals but generally speaking I couldn’t do this without a team that believes in the bigger thing. And this is a hallmark of indie filmmaking too of course.

    Been crook for the last few weeks. Makes me realise; that can't be you. Is crowd-sourcing a funding option? What about putting it out there that you need a certain prop and if a Patreon buys it, sends it to you and then the cast can sign it and return it after the production wraps? I've easily spent a grand on RPG books and what-not in the last 12 months. I'd throw a grand your way. I'm sure there are a bunch of people that are my age and have disposable income to throw at the project. No return expected. Just to see the cool stuff come to fruition. I don't know man. I think all the pills I'm popping has affected my thought process. I'm a gunna take a bex and have a lie down.

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Lol! Dem pills, man, dem pills! Actually, that idea of a prop exchange is pretty interesting… I’m making note of that. Crowdfunding is something I’m aware of, I just … I’m just hesitant at this stage. If I decide to explore that route, I want to be sure I’m offering something of particular value. But your sentiment is highly appreciated 🤙🍻🏴‍☠️
