You are amazing and you have such talent and are a great teacher. Thanks. I just finished your video on designing my workflow for creating my digital art and your video really un-confused the whole sizing and ration business. I'm starting my GIMP work today. I am an ai digital artist and just opened my Etsy store for ai digital travel posters and nature scenes. NOW, this video is exactly what my daughter was looking for. She is a watercolor artist and wants to turn her pieces into digital format. She lives way up in BC Canada and just got her scanner. I will share your link with her. She'll be excited to find your video. Also, thanks for your honesty in your "Long Hauler" video. I appreciate your sharing. You helped me to keep staying protected and careful since I'm a senior with some health issues. Blessings to you and again, thanks for helping me with my Etsy side hustle in my retirement.👍😀

Thank you Allison! I try my best to put things I always had trouble finding information on. And I love that piece too, one of my favorites I've ever done. Gotta figure out where to hang her.
Thank you so much. This exactly what I’d like to do with my watercolour paintings, but, being a complete technophobe, I had no idea how to go about it. I may need to go through this a few times and I’ll definitely access the other two videos you recommended, but this now feels very doable for me. So grateful ❤

Brittany, this was excellent. Thank you. 1) What prevents a paid buyer from sharing your google link with others? 2) Is there a reason you don't offer a fulfillment service through a vendor like Lumaprints, etc.?

Thank you so much for this video! Your work is so lovely and your explanations are wonderful. It's also an amazing tutorial on Gimp, so major bonus. I might be getting in my head about this, but on your images that are sized with a 1/2 inch border, are they technically 1/2" over the size listed? So for the 8 x 10 size- is it 8.5" x 10.5"? Thanks!
thank you so much for the love! You're too kind. and NO you're not too much in your head because I wondered the same thing when I started. I include the 1/2 inch border in the overall dimensions. so the size listed will still be the same :)
Epson Perfection scanners are, in my opinion, the top scanners available. I had one I purchased in 2002, and I scanned thousands of photos, slides, art, etc. The only reason I don't use it now is because a couple of years ago I must have rolled my chair over the cord and cut it, and I need to find a replacement cord. That's almost 20 years of use.
Nice video. I think it would be easier to re-scan the artwork without hair and lint, rather than retouch it digitally, especially if the image has a textured background. Also if you need to square up the image use the top guides that you pull down from the top ruler as a guide.

Thank you so much for taking the time to put these videos together. I appreciate everything that goes into creating these. Question: Please confirm that you exported the edited image as a .jpg in 300 dpi and then copy and paste this edited image into the various templates? Just want to be sure at what point in the process you change the extension and the 600 dpi from the original scanned image. :)
Thank you Brittany! I’ve spent the entirety of today watching, rewatching and following your tutorials. I have a question about this one piece I did on a small square canvas. I followed all your directions and when I got to the doubling the size of the piece (in Gimp) to the 300dpi/ppi then did the math to find the dimensions of the actual physical print it came to 23.5” x 24”. Basically a square - which doesn’t really fit into any of the aspect ratios…. How would I list that on my Etsy? Just different square sizes with 24x24 being the biggest? I’m confused now 😬😂🙇🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
That was so helpful. Thank you. So complicated but I have downloaded gimp and I will be revisiting your video for my first edit. Assuming this would be the same for a photo of art?
Watching the video now Brittany. This is great. Thanks for sharing. I’m wondering if you ever get worried about people buying the digital copy and then trying to resell? Something I have worried about and has made me hesitant about selling digital copies. Thanks!!
I worry about this a lot. I wonder if there is a way to metatag the file with some sort of identifier? I have no idea. At the end of the day people are out there that would do that and they suck but I figure when the time comes I'll try my best to figure it out. I have actually heard of large businesses stealing art from small artists and unfortunately the lawsuits get no where. It's a sticky area. So to answer your question. Yes I worry. A lot. But I don't want that to stop me from sharing my art with people :) so I'll just go with the flow for now. Thanks for watching!
@@astoldbybrittany4342 thanks so much for the thoughtful response. As I expected there is of course a risk no matter what you do. I appreciate though that it shouldnt let it stop me. 💯🙌
I cant thank you enough for breaking down these file sizing method and explaining everything about the dpi and resolution. I do have one big question though, How to make a 150 dpi image to 300 dpi image ? So that we can improve the quality of the image. Please please please help with this query ....
in GIMP, go "Image", "Scale Image", then you can change both they Y and X resolution to 300 instead of 150. BUT don't forget, this will mean the final size of your image will be half as small when you go to print it.
Hi Brittany, This is very helpful. I subscribed! I am just not clear as to why to left a white border around all your prints? Can you please clarify? thx, Rachel : )
I’m so glad I found your channel! Love all the info and am currently watching! I do have a question, though. I have art on stretched canvas and some are bigger than a scanner could read (apart from commercial, maybe?). I heard another artist used their iPhone 13 to take a photo and go from there. Do you have any advice or experience with this?
Aww thanks for the love! Glad you’re here. Hmmm. If it were me I wouldn’t take a picture of such a large piece I feel like at that size it’s be hard to capture every detail and all the texture of the brush strokes (my fav). But there is a method called “stitching” where you take several scans at different positions on the Art and then in photoshop “stitch” them all together. I’ve been thinking of making a tutorial on that bc I have large art I need to do that with.
Hi! I was trying to scroll through the comments to see if this question was asked but - first! Thank YOU for putting this together! Truly helpful. So my question is how do you price your digital art?
Hi Brittany. Thank you so much for this video. I'm stuck on getting my image the same size as the layer. I was successfully able to cut off the edges (the checkerboard showed up), rotated it and cropped it. When I clicked on crop to content, it left a lot of blank space around my image. Is there a manual way I can adjust the layer size so it's the same size as the image? Thank you so much!
I have watched like 5 videos and still lost on the resize to sell various ratios and sizes thing . I sell digital AI art and I can’t crop it off or half the image will be gone . Seems only ratio that doesn’t cut off is 1:1 or 20x20 . Any tips are appreciated. I’m using Photoshop to resize and Lightroom to Upscale or Enhance for now . If there is a more user friendly way let me know
Inspired by your generosity, thank you so much for sharing all of your hard earned knowledge and skills! My new scanner says 4800x4800 dpi resolution, I haven't tried it out yet. You mentioned 300 and 600 dpi in the video. Still a little confused by the different ways of describing resolution. Will my new scanner work for high quality large prints like 24x36? Many many thanks!!!
Yep you have plenty of scanning capacity to make large prints!! Try it out and order a test prints if you're unsure! That's why I did and ended up selling it to a friend so no money was even wasted testing it out. Thanks for the love
Good info. Thanks. Seems your process could be improved by using an AI image upscaler tool. Will give your scans better quality than regular Gimp or photoshop enlarging, since the ai upscaler actually adds pixels as needed when upscaling. Some upscaler tools available online. Some available to run on local computer, but ai upscaling can a pretty intense process, so alot of regular personal computers wont be able to handle.
Hi there! Thank you so much for the excellent information and for taking the time to teach us exactly what to do. I just have a question please. I am drawing art in Procreate, however, I cannot scale that big (due to my IPad settings) in inches at 300 dpi. But I can create in pixels at 600 dpi. What size do you recommend creating art in Procreate to be able to scale in size? I understand everything else that you’re sharing, I just would like to know what is the best size in Procreate to scale up the art as you have shown in your video. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time! 😊
Honest I would just recommend limiting your size offerings to what you can do with Procreate! That would still give you around 15 or so offerings! If you still want to have the large poster size offerings though, you could scale up your 600 DPI image 2x to get to an image that's twice as large at 300DPI.
This is an awesome video, thanks Brittany! I have a question about colour matching - do you have any videos on this? When I scan images the colours seem a bit different than my originals, and just figuring out the best way to make them print closest to the originals. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks again for the great video :)
Hey Brittany, First, thank you so much for being so detailed in your teaching. I have found this so informative. I have a couple of questions. First, I usually paint fairly small so when I scan my painting can I scan it at a higher DPI to be able to scale it as large as I want? For instance, can I take a 5x7 size painting and scale it at 900 dpi so I can make it 3 times larger? Second question - Since you give a shared link to your files are you concerned that the person getting into the files will remove them? How do you prevent them from wiping the file out so that when the next person uses the link they don’t find an empty file? I am still trying to figure all of this out. I am sure these are naive questions - LOL
You have no idea how helpful this video has been! I'm just starting the process of digizting my art in hopes of selling and have been overwhelmed with all the different videos I have found. Quick question, are you saving your finished files in RGB or CMYK? I've heard that you should save each ratio in both for different printer settings? Have you found this to be true?
Thanks for the love! Glad it’s been helpful. Ummm…. Gonna be honest I know next to nothing about RGB vs CMYK so I’ll do some research and get back to you! My files right now are rgb which is the gimp, default.
Hey, I'm a graphic designer and hopefully able to tell you something about CMYK vs. RGB. Please consider English is not my native language... CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and the key colour black. These are the colours used by your printer to get the coloured print in the end. The concept works based on the printing grids and subtractive colour mixing (really interesting and worth the research). This CMYK colour space is more limited than the digital light based RGB world (additive colour mixing), used by your computer. Therefore you should always convert or use CMYK for files that shall be printed in the future. Because if a colour (e.g. electric green) is not represented in the CMYK world you can react and change the percentages of used cyan or yellow to get a somewhat similar colour. Hope this helps and offers some keywords to expand the research area. :)
So my original art is usually in 16X20 size oil paint and I want to digitize them by taking a photo since the scanner is not large enough (also I have to wait a week or so for them to dry) would that work?
Thanks so much for this great information! Appreciate you sharing- I have some digital artwork that is large in size but only about 96 dpi. If I upload the artwork in Gimp, Gimp will export it at 300 dpi as a JPG- Will this work as far as quality, or do you think quality is somehow compromised in this process? Thanks again!
That is correct! It won’t look any different on the screen at 96 vs 300. The difference in resolution will be seen in the final print. You could always order test prints in both and compare!
@@astoldbybrittany4342 Thank you for your prompt reply. Much appreciated :) I found mixed info while searching: Many use RGB, others insist on CMYK. A few are even using sRGB. I think I'll go with RGB for now.
Thanks Brittany, I like your videos. Could you tell me how I lower the weight of the folder I made in Google Drive? Etsy does not support more than 20 megabytes. I downloaded the folder from Drive and it downloaded in a very heavy zipped folder. How do I lower the weight so that Etsy admits it to me. I would really appreciate your advice. Thank you very much and happy day.
Hi Patricia, you shouldn't need to download the google drive folder contents. You can keep it there, and then share the link of that folder to the customers who purchase. That way they can bypass Etsy and download straight from the Google Drive folder. Hope that helps.
Thanks for all your efforts explaining this as it is quite confusing! Maybe this is a dumb question as I am still confused. If your original painting is 8 x 10 at 600 dpi then how come your max selling size is not 16 x 20 at 300 dpi? When I tried this with my artwork which is 5 x 7 at 600 dpi, my final size after the 200 percent increase was 10 x 15 and when I changed the dpi back down to 300 dpi the pixels reverted back to the original values. So I am a bit confused! 😩
I have the same question. I was good until I got to that part and have watched the video 5x don't understand the concept. Yes, the match is correct, but something is missing. Please PLEASE explain this!
@@tanyawirth7439 Yes same I was good until that part. From what I have read if you scan at 600dpi then you can double the size of your print by reducing the dpi to 300. You may also get away with making it slightly larger than double too.
Hi, just a question, also thank you for the awesome videos :) … do you paint these pieces yourself then upload? I’m just curious if I can sell this type of thing with things that I didn’t originally create?
Are the final images in RGB or in CMYK? For me this part is overwhelming, I don't want to sell something that will not look the same when someone else is printing it out at home.
Omg thank youuuuuu!!!! I literally just spent $50 to scan TWO of my artworks. Looks like I should invest in an at home scanner and put this into practice.

Thank you so much for this video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching
I like how you look in them glasses 😊
Super video!
Great idea! Thank you!
how do you indicate to customers that your borders are within the image dimensions, not outside of the image dimensions?
In the description of my listing I'll put "Files have 1/2 inch white border included in dimensions for easy framing"
I have a question, 25:54 do you have to make white borders? and if you do what’s the reason for it?
you don't have to - it's meant to be dedicated space for framing so you don't cut off any of your art when it's framed
wonderful . Thank you !
Good info.
@@astoldbybrittany4342 Thank you! I understand. Much appreciated. 😊
Hi Brittany, what type of paper do you recommend to get your prints on please?
Oh my God, thank you so so much
You're welcome Ginger!
Thank you so much❤
thank you it is so useful
Glad it was helpful!
So my original art is usually in 16X20 size oil paint and I want to digitize them by taking a photo since the scanner is not large enough (also I have to wait a week or so for them to dry) would that work?
Do you set the mode to CMYK rather than RGB in Gimp for printing purposes?
I use RGB with no issues!
Thanks for the awesome video. Very informative :). If I may ask, regarding file export, what color space do you use to export?
I use RGB! I know some artists disagree with that but I've never had an issue!
@@astoldbybrittany4342 Thank you for your prompt reply. Much appreciated :)
I found mixed info while searching: Many use RGB, others insist on CMYK. A few are even using sRGB. I think I'll go with RGB for now.
@@barbarossa04 awesome, lmk how it goes!
"math" is correct
Hi, just a question, also thank you for the awesome videos :) … do you paint these pieces yourself then upload? I’m just curious if I can sell this type of thing with things that I didn’t originally create?
Thank you
Are the final images in RGB or in CMYK? For me this part is overwhelming, I don't want to sell something that will not look the same when someone else is printing it out at home.
