A Retired American's Unfiltered Confessions From Thailand

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 14 มิ.ย. 2024
- I interview Steve Rosse, a retired American who chose to spend his golden years in a quiet beach town in southern Thailand. In this interview Steve opens up about his life's journey, sharing the regrets that have shaped his path.
Steve delves into the professional crossroads he faced, recounting the pivotal moment when a meeting with a million-dollar client took an unexpected turn, leaving the client in tears and ultimately costing him his job. He reminisces about turning away from a promising career in the movie industry, a choice that took him on a different trajectory altogether as well as giving up a rent-controlled apartment in New York city.
It wouldn’t be an interview with Steve Rosse if there wasn’t some sort of controversy as he shares his opinions on the ways some westerners in Thailand dress and act.

First Interview I did with Steve: th-cam.com/video/FH_ekX_hgJw/w-d-xo.html
Steve is very polarizing. I like listening to him. But probably only half as much as he likes listening to him. His transparency is refreshing.
He lied about not having access to quality, free Healthcare in America.
You would need to have your head examined if you were to take this guy’s advice
"Without the animal inside of us, we just would be castrated angels"
He lived his life. Many regret that they didn't with their last breathes.
The advice I gave my 30 year old self, that would have served Steve well (in the advertising business) is - slow down, stop, and think before you speak. I am eternally grateful for that piece of self advice that ensured a successful career and an early retirement and a life here in Thailand.
Loved to know your trick of time travel 😉
Pete you continue to amaze me with your interview skills - the way you balance the insightful questions with letting your subject speak without being self conscious. People are complex and your interviews show this so well.
You can’t dislike this guy.
He’s so direct, unapologetically honest, straightforward and authentic you know exactly where you stand with him.
You have to respect that.
Too many people aren’t authentic and too scared to say what they really feel.
Steve Rosse may have his faults, but, he is not one of those people. He is a rare breed and should be celebrated.
What are you talking about
This guy is what he is and I wouldnt change him.
I like the fact he is so un appologetic and balls and all honest
Yeah, this guy loves to talk. But he's very good at it. He can talk. He seems to be quite open, honest, and makes himself a lot more vulnerable than most other commentators. So, why throw stones. I see nothing other than praise to be afforded here. Who at 69 can be this genuine about himself and life in front of a camera, as this guy? I say: keep up the great work Steve!
Thank you for your kind words. But, ahem. I'm sixty-six.
The first interview in Bangkok was very good and now this one was more in depth, excellent. Steve is who he is, quite a character, honest. He is living his dream. Way to go Steve! It is always a pleasure to watch him with Tim in grumpy old men. And yes, I agree with what he says about the way some farang dress and behave in Thailand. All the best.
Glad to hear him interviewed in depth again. We’ve been following him since his 1st interview here. We just love you who you are! Good story indeed… ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it Nok!
I liike Steve Rosse, he is always entertaining.
Well done, Sir. I really appreciate an interviewer who allows the interviewee to expound fully without interruption.
Thanks buddy
Your honest your real your broken your healing you and healing others
Your spark has ignited a flame.
🕊️
Love Steve. Great guy.
His daughter would disagree!
Pete, you're a natural born interviewer but I think your interviews with Steve and Paul Wallis are among the best on your channel. subjects who actually have a story (or several stories) to tell, and are refreshingly honest in how they tell them. No pandering to the perpetually offended. Keep up the good work on the channel, hope you get a chance to meet up with Steve when you are in Thailand later this year. 👍
Thanks for your kind words.Paul and Steve are both great storytellers which certainly makes my job easier
"The truth will set you free"
Is true.
Yeah Paul is a fascinating character as well.
I like Steve because he proudly proclaims he's a Narcissist! I respect that! 🙏 😊
I love Steve Rosse! Brilliant, funny and tough as nails
I live in Bangkok and I still shake my head when I see the westerners on the bts and metro dressed like a homeless dude or beach bum . Steve’s not wrong….
We always wore a tie when I was there, as a matter of course. No dignity in the Thai's eyes, otherwise.
I think it's ridiculous seeing people traveling in business attire through Thailand. Appearance is ridiculous. These people will see you maybe once in your life.
Absolutely. Rilliant conversation gents. Really interesting. The alternate universe double space was frickin awesome. Love it. Health and happiness to you both .
Thank you buddy
@@ThairishTimes take off the JACKEEN ACCENT
Not many hour interviews I'll listen to straight through. Pete- you're such a good interviewer, as I've said before. What I noticed this time is that you somehow managed to both leave room for Steve to talk (he loves that :) ) and pick times for new questions or insightful followups. Steve, I truly hope one day your fantasy lady will show up at the end of your bike ride. I almost shed a tear thinking of your fantasy- regrets are painful.
Pete is an incredible listener.
People are prompted to open up and share their thoughts and memories with him.
He could be good at interrogation.
Thanks buddy, I guess after a couple of interviews with Steve I gained some experience and knew how it would likely go
I do love watching police interrogations on TH-cam lol@@Boddav
@@ThairishTimes -Thank you, but I’m not implying that any of the people you interview are bad guys.
Rishi Sunak: Dad= Doctor/ Mother = Pharmacist. Pharmacy next door to doctors practice.
I enjoy listening to Steve's intriguing life story. He is an eccentric man. He lives his life on his own terms. That is how it should be. Nothing is more precious than having the feeling of being free. People like him are a rare breed. Also, it is fantastic that he manages to live on his monthly $1500.00 social security benefit. I don't think I will be able to do that. I will probably need US $3000.00 each month to live in Thailand.
Steve never fails to make me laugh and listen.
Very entertaining interesting guy.
I do enjoy your Friday show and grumpy old men.
As always, good job, Pete.
Thanks buddy
Entertaining as always Pete when interviewing Steve 👏👏👏
cheers Jimmy
Great Interview. Steve is very honest which is what I like, tells it as it really is...
Nothing wrong ith this guy, just living his life his way.dont we all want to do this ❤
the palm tree on Steve's shirt collar moving makes it look like he has a live tarantula on his shoulder
Steve is my most favourite vlogger 😊. Love his short stories ......❤
Two of my favourite people...great interview as always Pete! I can't remember if it was your first interview with Steve, or if it was Tim that introduced me to him, but I'm a big fan now. I may be from the few that really enjoyed his "Boontong" videos, but those are the ones that drew me in. I really miss them. At any rate, he's a great storyteller as you are an interviewer. Thanks as always...
i like this guy a lot.
This guy is out there hustling, I admire that.😊
Steve is a likeable rogue. Funny when mr irish was pushing his buttons re his mother. Steve immediately got hot headed. Clever interview style. You should be doing this more with your subjects. You are evolving in this job as a TH-camr. You should challenge people more often. You don't have to be mr nice guy all the time
I like his clear speaking voice.
Hard to watch his videos, but yours are great.
thanks Alex
This guy is absolutely obvious, great interview.
Obvious or oblivious
Living his dream, fair play to Steve and congrats on the smokes!

Well done Guys
Love the two of you!

And I first heard Steve here bitching about his marriage, and never thought he would be interesting.
Funny, that was my first impression.@@ThairishTimes
This guy is living his life his way , which is the way it should be, depressing when he is alone and nobody to shout at. He won't get a woman in thailand even if he had plenty of money . He is the type that nobody could live with..not even go on a date with , his loud argumentive voice would cause a lady to lose face.. But its an interesting video u put together Pete but the proof is in the pudding how his life panned out. He is on also about appearance but his Jai which is more important and is about your character,, sounds Jai Ron.
@steverosse u see ,, u don't even read properly, u just just the gun..u even put it in """""" .. I never said "Away".. I said "Way"... Read it carefully and then u might not get so worked up.
@@liamharding5704 he gets worked up because he doesn't like the truth you said about him. Pretty simple really .
Well said sir. But a rough old ex bar girl might put up with his personality on the proviso he had some dosh
That was fun.

Steve is fascinating. I met quite a few characters like him driving an Uber in New York. One of them was the producer of The Fly - reminds me a lot of Steve.

This guy again. Dude loves the sound of his own voice.
Aint that you?
He's a total fantasist.
His topics are.
1. His shack on 'Turtle beach'
2. His life in the movie industry
3. His sick mother back home and how he lives on. US welfare
4. His life as an unsuccessful author
5. His (imaginary) movies where he films action figures
6. How he smokes marijuana daily since he was 10
7. His failed marriage
8. How he won't last much longer
9. His other TH-cam exploits including 'Grumpy old men'
10. How clever, interesting, handsome and bastion of staunch morality he is.
Guaranteed Steve will offer these stories.
Did l mention that he's an extremely clever, handsome, intelligent and charismatic guy? 😂

Steve's a legend.
Hey Steve, does it have to be a 24-hour flight to the States? You could hop... Taipei, Hawaii, San Francisco, Iowa? Do that trip in reverse on the way back to Thailand?
I’d be happy to live and die in Thailand mate 🇦🇺🙏
Amen.
Good Ol' Short time Steve-o !
Steve Rosse he’s cool as.😊
I absolutely loved Steve's reviews of fellow Thai Travel TH-camrs. He was 100% spot on ... Although they're not related to Bangkok, it would have been funny to hear his review of Buzzin Pattaya, Steady Eddy Travels, and the Queen of Pattaya ... 😂😂😂
that fantasy is sweet. 😢
What an interesting, cis-male. Great interview 👍.
Congrats on no smoking. That is big news
Always interesting to listen to Steve even he talk so so much! Without him Grumpy old men would be nothing. Steve has all the humour that Tim is missing.
Steve doesn't give a xxxx. Very cool.
Oh no, you said the mother of all TH-cam clichés.” without further ado.”
Steve"s a funny guy 😂
Many older people lose their interest in swimming for another reason than Steve. As we age, our skin becomes thinner and we are more sensitive to heat and cold than when we were young. Even though Thailand is tropical, deep water can feel quite chilly depending on a number of factors. But most oldies do like it to cool off for short spans of time.
... 2 mm neopren
@@_Alfa.Bravo_ Yeah I 've often seen many young divers use suits, if they are in the business or if they dive a lot. I never wore a suit when I was young . Seemed like a lot of trouble. Haven't been diving for many years , just snorkel in warm waters now and then when I get the chance.
Not here in Australia. You see loads of oldies going for a morning dip.

Random question for any falang . Ive made a decision for maybe the 5th time that i want to learn thai - once for each year of marriage.
Ive just listened to 2 TH-cam videos and with both videos my wife has said ( oh thats not what / how we say ) i dont wanna go down the road and memorise a load of nonsense.
I want to learn everyday thai to talk to everyday people .my plan is to learn some basics then to go online with a tutor.
Id be greatfull with any recommendations

Take 1on1 lessons with a teacher living in thailand with an app like preply or italki. If you can afford it, two lessons per week.
Try AUA Language Center, Ratchadamri
You must have a Thai instructor to correct the mistakes in the pronouncing the words with the correct tones.
One on one lessons are best. I started doing 3 lessons a week 12 months ago and now really improved. Medium level of literacy in 1 yr
Cheers fellas
My wife has taught it for over 20 years, I still can't master tomes!
Another great video Pete 👍 (and Steve)

Good luck getting health insurance after 2 heart attacks. That's assuming he actually had 2 heart attacks.
Of course I did. Why would I lie about that? Two STEMIs in my LAD. Just as I said. I've also had my appendix removed emergently, a balloon dilation of my esophagus for scarring due to GERD, an open inguinal hernia repair, an enucleation of the prostate gland, a broken arm, a broken leg, a broken nose, and half my teeth extracted. I'm very flattered by your interest in my health, person hiding behind his keyboard.
A booster will take that to 3
Pete, you weren't needed in this interview as he just rambled on for the most part. Still I appreciate your efforts in trying to find interesting people to talk with.
You know that's why all these people invite me on their channels, right? Four times with Pete, three with JD Strange, and about fifty times on Tim Newton Today. I'm an interviewer's dream interview. You get that, right?
He hides his pain well, tho was obvious by over compensating etc. Refreshing to hear the honesty about an ex 30+ yrs ago, thank god it's not just me who has similar experiences about an ex. Women eh !! They effect us so much. Timing eh !
You think I hide my pain? Dude, I've written five books about my pain. This week alone I will appear on three separate YT channels talking about my pain. Talking about my pain is my brand.
@steverosse sorry to hear that, but it is first time as a 58 Yr old I have heard someone be that honest about a past ex , with similar thoughts as myself. I thought it is only me who feels tormented by not living the life with someone who I can't get out of the heart/mind, yet like yours, they seem to move on with their lives easily ! As a brit who's visited many worldwide countries, many times to attempt to escape or distract from a life without ! Flying back out to KL and onto Nong Khai for a couple of mths at end of Jan, as Thailand calls again, after resisting for a few yrs. But winter in UK forces it ! My comment was a positive btw. There must be sooooo many guys feeling similar..take care, enjoy the good life

US social security allows a recipient to work as much as he likes. He is liable to pay US income tax pay tax on total income. With Steve's $1500 a month plus a small additional amount he would not have to pay any taxes.
Health insurance - on the one hand it is, of course, makes no sense to say I am healthy at the moment so, no, I am not buying health insurance. On the other hand he was prepared to die a happy man 6 months ago. Insurance or no insurance, Thailand or elsewhere, some us just decide to accept what happens and are not all that interested in grasping for that last minute of life with the latest technology. Living happily in Thailand makes that mindset seem reasonable.
