In this video I restore a 1950's Big Beam flashlight. The Flashlight is rusty and the paint is partially gone. Thgere are also some dents.
I started by disassemblign the flashlight. I needed to take off the rivets to be able to get a good paint job. After diassembly I used electrolysi to remove the rust and paint. Dents were hammered flat, and any repaining defects on the surface were filled with bondo.
The body was painted with 2K primer and then with red 2K paint. I also made custom stickers with the Big Beam logo to finish the look. I created the image in photoshop based on some images I found of another lamp.
The handle and lamp part were polished and nickel plated. My nickel coating tutorial: • How to make simple DIY...
To reassemble the flashlight I needed to make some new rivets on my new lathe. I don't really have all the tool for it yet so it was easiest and fastest to do the final shaping and polishing with a drill. The lathe will be very useful for making thing like this, because it's always hard to find a specific kind of screw or rivet and if I do find one it might take 2 weeks to ship it to me. I also couldn't fit a hammet inside the case to hammer the rivets so I made a simple tool to help me do that.

I thought the sponsored bits were done really well, actually showing how the product works in direct relation to the restoration. Not at all intrusive (like compare it to your typical "Binging With Banish" Yadda Yadda about Simplisafe or Cashapp, where you just know he never actually touched the advertised ..."thing" outside of filming)
...tho I've just seen a video on a different DIY channel (Grind Hard Co), also uploaded today, which had a very very similar "actually involve the product" placement of Ecoflow - so that company may actually have instructed these channels to do exactly this, or chosen channels that cater to this style.
It's so curious to look back and realize how far we've come in terms of resource optimization, to see that huge battery with that huge light bulb that doesn't give 1/4 of the illumination that a flashlight would today the size of my finger...
Yeah. I wonder if it could be "modernized" without altering it. IE use led adopted and battery that uses same connectors as adoptor. Old battery and light can be used still.

Yeah, but nothing beats the materials and workmanship of the things made back then. Now everything is meant to break so we have to keep putting money in their pockets, especially all the made in China shit. And the prices we have to pay are astronomical.

Keep in mind, though, that lanterns like this were being made well into the age of powerful small flashlights. Not only did the battery hold a charge longer than most batteries made well into the 2000s, the unusual size and shape of both the lantern and the battery meant that it didn’t walk off the jobsite very often.
It looks like it can be mounted on a motorcycle and use it for night riding! Great restoration video.

Great job on this! I was a kid in the 1960s and had one of these (not the same brand, but same structure/design, pretty much). As you say in your note, we've come so far. I thought it was a crappy, heavy flashlight then, and I still think so, but it sure does look spiffy LOL. I carry a tiny flashlight the size of a pen in my pants pocket now that can light up a low cloud.
Agree totally. Even then, same product from same factory (likely in Taiwan) badged Pifco, Phillips, Ever Ready, etc. All junk with dim light and battery lasting little time

Just a quick suggestion: when you are sanding down surfaces, I recommend using a sanding block. It will keep your surfaces all at one level as you go, whereas just using your hand can leave you chasing divets or waves. Plus your hand or thumb might start to hurt after a while with out a block. Great finished product, though 👌

I love seeing just these normal everyday things being restored. Like, nobody thinks this flashlight is of any major historical significance, but somebody owned it once and it’s fallen into disrepair. It’s such a part of everyday life that I just find absolutely fascinating
Nice. I came across a big beam with a halogen bulb with button on the cover of the battery instead of on top of the headlight. It works great. It needs some cleaning up but I’m happy with it
If you keep dipping the tip of a new soldering iron in a small tub of flux will keep the coating of the new tip in tact and will make beautiful solder joints. Most people dont do this and end up making solder joint that look like dog poop piles. Might as well if your going to the trouble of restoring it and making it look nice to have pro looking pretty solder joints.
I feel sad that there will be a day when these old electronic parts wont be available anymore
yeah it'll be sad but sometimes things from our past inevitably cease to exist it's a part of life which is hard to get used to but on the bright side they'll still be remembered throughout history one way or another

While I love items are being restore by you, I can't stop thinking of how far the products have been improved! The flashlight we have now are compact but packed with great brightness/Lumen~
That’s true but the new stuff isn’t as interesting to look at and hold and just keep as an artifact. Plus it works!
@@janisdardaris4605 New is far more useful and purposeful for doing interesting things. Old things like this are merely decorative artifacts and only interesting as far as showing how far these type of things have improved. Like early brick sized mobile phones

Why not both, I lilke reversible retrofits, on this lamp I would try a drop-in LED replacement for the bulb (they often seem to have E10 sockets and of course a warm white LED around 2700K) and lantern batteries are so large, you can 3D print an adapter and use a bunch of 18650 lithium ion cells, I've found one that uses 8 cells, so with 3000 mAh (and these are average ones, 18650s can have up to 3600 mAh) cells you have 8.4V and 12000 mAh (and rechargeable) while normal Lantern batteries have 6V and up to 9500 mAh.
Or you could also put a Lithium Polymer battery pack with a BMS in maybe with a BMS that supports charging via USB (so you can flip up the top and connect it to your USB-PD phone/laptop charger) and an output voltage regulator/convertor to avoid burning the 6V bulb.
You forget to show how you fix the switch of 4:32 :( but good restoration, it's so nice the result. You should use flux with the tin to get best results welding -> Castolin FP3030 is your friend ;).
Looks like the Ducktor's going to need a bath after that bath.

I have one quite similar, but i think older a bit (more brass). The front has a lens. It's so heavy, that when there's no battery inside, the whole thing can tip over unless the assembly is tilted back, collapsing the handle and making it ever so slightly more compact. Design was so cool back then.

When soldering a wire to a terminal, one should make sure the wire is mechanically secure (even just crimping the wire around the terminal) before soldering, so the joint does not rely on the solder alone.

I remember using these big old flashlights as kids in the 50's and 60's when we'd all be out getting worms to go fishing the next day. I still say they were the best flashlights even though they could be a bit heavy.
You may talk about your fancy LEDs and whatnot, but sometimes you just can’t beat the old tech! I’ve got a Big Beam №164 (basically the sealed-beam version of this), and it’s my go-to torch for urbex, it reaches into the distance better than any modern torch I’ve tried. Lovely restoration!
I love cleaning with electrolysis, I love watching the chemistry at work.
You should consider powder coating in the future. You don't need a large oven in the beginning as most of your projects here are small to medium sized items

Good restoration job, but the soldering was painful to watch. Consider investing in flux and a higher power soldering iron. It greatly improves the soldering quality and resistance to cracking.

These flashlights are all about the handle, stay put swivel head and push button location. Nice work rivet man. It should look good and keep working for about 200 years.

I am an Electrical and Electronics Engineer and looking back at the light technology back in those days huge batteries incandesent lamps with not even 1/4 brightness of todays AA Flashlights it's so facinating to contemplate what life would have been in those days, even then a flashlight would be a rarity such a luxury common folks could not afford.
The people in the 50s would be blown away if they knew about the LED lightbulb and lithium-ion battery: a brighter bulb that consumes less power and a battery that is lighter and higher capacity.
Beautifully done. My dad used similar flash lights when I was a kid.
Good work again! But I also paid attention to the soldering. There seemed to be some movement when soldering the wires. The pieces to be soldered should not move until the tin solidifies properly. And you really should keep the tip of the soldering iron clean.
I have noticed on other videos here that the main problem is carrying the solder to the part on the soldering iron. By the time it gets there, all the flux is gone and you get that horrible blobby rough joint. Use flux core solder and use the soldering iron to heat the part and apply the solder to the hot component, not the iron. Or apply more flux and reheat if you are reflowing two parts together.
I think this flashlight need a new lampbulb, more brighter and more energy efficient.
I wonder if there are any LED replacement bulbs with much higher light output. Love the restoration!

Wow, now THAT'S a very fancy flashlight! Definitely one of the more interesting, and unique flashlights you've restored on the channel, Odd! XD It's crazy just how far we've come in terms of flashlights. That one wire really didn't want come out, but you managed to get it loose. I'm sure the Ducktor is very pleased to see the return of his rusty mud bath as it's certainly been a while since we last saw it, and he gets a chance to relax, and clear out his pores. The EcoFlow Delta 2 sure is a fancy device! Hope it continues to help you in many of your future restorations to come! I liked that you were playing Find The Ball, only this time it was "Find The Polisher", and you used one of the flashlight components as one of the cups along with 2 actual cups, and, instead of revealing the polisher in the flashlight part (I forget what it's called), it was the Ducktor, meanwhile, said polisher was hidden in one of the cups, lol. Did he actually remove it into one of the cups so he could hide in the part while you weren't looking? That little rascal. And that's why we love the Ducktor!
