I been drag racing since high school in the 80’s. My dad raced since the 60’s. You have more steering control with a skinny front wheel and tire like you said. But weight saving can be huge when setting up a car. With a bad surface like a street or back side no prep saving 10-15lbs each wheel is huge. If I can take 20-30lbs off the nose it can really make a difference plantings the rear tire and suspension. I can run more air pressure in the rear, that gives me an easier rotating mass in the rear. I agree with everything you said and skinnies or front runners.
Weight is weight. Rotational weight is 4x the weight. But that more important on the drive tires or in a track situation with suspension movement (gyro affect)
😎🇺🇸👍 Hey Buddy! Good Stuff, Drag racers full time or part time, for decades have been running narrow wheels and tires, skinny’s, or front runners what ever you won’t to call them must help. Keep up the great videos Peace ✌🏻
Any any unsprung weight removed is a huge difference in weight savings. Lighter tires lighter wheels and brakes will make the car feel much much lighter.
I don’t think the grip part is correct. He implies it gives less grip where as (and only my understanding) is that for only going straight narrows give more feel over a wide tyre. The science is supposed to be the same as to why skis are narrow, they dig in and grip as apposed to putting two snow boards on your feet where you would sledge and slide everywhere. Obvious downside is they don’t turn corners as well
Will you b able to upgrade the brakes to 6 piston with those wheels?? Also with a 3600 lb car wouldn’t it be pretty sketchy if you lose control on the track? Wouldn’t it be much harder to recover from?
If you lose control you let off the gas. No being a hero... Not planning to add 6 pistons as I will not be road racing anytime soon. But you would need an 18” front wheel to clear 6 pistons
Please tell me the exact tires you went with in the front. I would like something that I can highway drive to the track about an hour and a half away. Thanks for the video.
Explained it perfectly great job as always I have the ssr spike wheels 28/10.5/15 Hoosier on the rear and 27.5/4.0/17 on the front I drive my car every day unless it going to rain
It's not just the weight savings. I ran a radial on the front of a 10 second C5 with a slick on the rear. It was downright scary at the end of the track. The patch area was at least the size of my et streets in the rear. If I had a skinny on that car I would have been able to push it harder on the top end and a lot safer too.
It's more like $1400. Just priced a whole setup for my car and I'm looking at $2700 for fronts and rears with mickey Thompson tires, and that's going with Forgestar D5 wheels which are less expensive than welds... you can spend over 4k on these setups. It's kinda ridiculous.
I'm going with a set of Weld S71 17x10 in the rear and the new Weld Alumastars up front that will clear all the late model big brake kits. Hope to run deep into the 10s with 0 power mods on a 17 ZL1!
Are you still planning on doing road racing or HPDE at this time? You had mentioned it in previous videos, but it seems like you're fully committed to the straight-line racing at this point.
Good to know. While drag racing is fun, I'd much rather see the car out on a twisty road course. Will be looking forward to seeing how the car progresses.
Video is like 5 years old and I hope you see this to reply…. How did those tires do at higher speeds on the front. Most front runners are H rated how was it running 160mph with those on the front? Thanks in advance. I’ve been racking my brain on how to make this all work
I have some original cragar drag stars they were before weld pro stars fronts 15×4 rear 15x7or 8 not sure on rear. Front tire is 215/70r15 i went to this size from a 185/65r15. I needed and wated a taller front tire to stop exhaust from scraping everywhere. Rear tire is a 275/60r15 which is as tall as u can get unless u get a specialty 285/70r15 which is massive at 31x11. I honestly got the wheels cuz i have love the look for years. It screams american muscle. I know with the 185/65r15 corning grip was a huge issue but i have also heard that skinnies or front runners are not meant for turning or corning mainly straight line so no donuts for me which is fine. I dont wanna rearrange the trunk anyway. Great video stay safe good luck on your goal of 9sec
Matt, can you not just jack your car up in the garage and do a test fit on front with just the rim please. I am interested to see if it clears the front brakes. Thanks
Will the car stop the same way with the front runners as with the stock tires? I wouldent want to be on the street and brake hard and the car keeps going..
Hey Matt i know its an older vid but im wondering how much you gained with the drag pack. Im going with Forgestars f14 17 x11 with 325 35 17 M@h for the rear. Fronts are Forgstar 18 x 5 with Mickey Thompson 18x 6 tire. Im a fbo cammed l99 with 391s and a 3200 stall. Trying to better my 1.9 all day 60 ft. Thanks.
Either do I daily drive mine but I just put a whipple on mine and need weld rear drags with M/T and also want my front to match my rear. Would I be able to safely drive with skinnys on the street when I do drive on the street... or should I put 18 or 20in in the front for when not on the track..

You always have great info. I have a 2016 Callaway SC 630 Camaro 2SS and constantly picking up tips from your videos. Keep them coming.

They definitely help; with a combination of a good suspension setup and tires... still waiting on your converter install! Love the vlog keep em coming
It’s in..: editing the video :)
Any any unsprung weight removed is a huge difference in weight savings. Lighter tires lighter wheels and brakes will make the car feel much much lighter.
15x3.50 rims 26x7.5 -15 tires on my small block chevy nova run them on the road , no problem, just be careful around turns and wet weather
You think I can daily 18x5 fronts?
I daily 15x4 so i would assume so. Just dont bust any donuts and careful with curbs and potholes
finally....someone explains it!

a trick : you can watch series on Kaldrostream. Me and my gf have been using it for watching loads of movies lately.
@Nolan Drake definitely, I've been using kaldroStream for since november myself :D

I’m in a 5th Gen camaro and I’m looking into a set of welds, will 17” wheels clear the factory size rotors and calipers?
Great video. Subscribed all the way from Germany. Good luck!
Explained it perfectly great job as always I have the ssr spike wheels 28/10.5/15 Hoosier on the rear and 27.5/4.0/17 on the front I drive my car every day unless it going to rain
.1 of a second for 1000 dollar worth of skinnys and tires. No thanks but to each their own
That will never need to be replaced

great vid man, very informative
Great video as they always are!!! Happy New Year to you and all the Lethal fan's may this year bring us all good fortune...
Unless committed to specific suspension upgrades it is basicly a wasted effort.
I've seen weld wheels bent right out of the box and couldn't be balanced and had to ship back... no one is perfect.
They are a must on a fully trackbited track
Great vid learn alot happy new year
You think I would be able to run 17’ beads in the back and a 18’ in the front for skinny’s? Is that a problem?
I'm going with a set of Weld S71 17x10 in the rear and the new Weld Alumastars up front that will clear all the late model big brake kits. Hope to run deep into the 10s with 0 power mods on a 17 ZL1!
Stock ZL1 with radials can do 10.8
Matt, with putting those 17 inch welds on do they clear the stock brakes?
Not a racing setup but since I live in Michigan I run all seasons on my Charger. Specifically Continental extremecontact dws 06 and they are awesome!
Are you still planning on doing road racing or HPDE at this time? You had mentioned it in previous videos, but it seems like you're fully committed to the straight-line racing at this point.
I plan to do both... this is my drag phase ;)
Good to know. While drag racing is fun, I'd much rather see the car out on a twisty road course. Will be looking forward to seeing how the car progresses.
Gto spares for me clears big brakes and corvette magnesium wheels in the back is my setup. Those welds are beautiful though

No issues as they are barely on the ground for a full pass.
@@Lethalgarage thank you for the quick reply, do you have any issues pulling at triple digits?
@@JustVince88 None
Hey Lethal on question. For my Camaro ss 16. Can a 17x11 fit with no rub problem?
Whats the back space of does wheels?
So if I understand correctly you should always match height of front skinny to the rear drag tire you are running right?
I have some original cragar drag stars they were before weld pro stars fronts 15×4 rear 15x7or 8 not sure on rear. Front tire is 215/70r15 i went to this size from a 185/65r15. Fantastic video, thank you for explaining this!!
wish there was a 5th gen video of all of this. :) stay classy
Geez, I was 2 tenths of a sec from 11s few bolt ons, might just pick some up
I am running a Bogart D10 runners but weld racing its the best ,the problem was weld didn’t make for 6 nuts for silverdos 😩
What Mickey thompson sportsman do you recomend me most for street sportsman s/r or the regular sportsman?
What the offset n backspace ? You got normal stock 4piston front ??
The rears are 17x10.5 and I think a 7.5
For the front runners
Thanks for the vid. How are they on the freeway/motorway?
You don’t want to drive these on a highway for very long
Matt, can you not just jack your car up in the garage and do a test fit on front with just the rim please. I am interested to see if it clears the front brakes. Thanks
Can you run normal tires on these welds?
you should be able too
I just bought 17x7 front runners but having trouble finding tires
What would happen if u used a spare tire with the spare tire wheels on the track even if the car is "slow"
Not much. Wouldn’t get the same benefits as a true skinny
Can you youse skinny tires for daily?
You shouldn’t
Will the car stop the same way with the front runners as with the stock tires? I wouldent want to be on the street and brake hard and the car keeps going..
Car stops just about the same
Are you still gonna get 6 piston breaks ? Or do you have them already v
On hold for now
What is the lettering on your hood?
LT1
How does skinnies do while doing turns going 100+ or overall on corners
You don’t run skinnies if you need to turn
Hey Matt i know its an older vid but im wondering how much you gained with the drag pack. Im going with Forgestars f14 17 x11 with 325 35 17 M@h for the rear. I do not recall as i never did just the drag pack, it was always with other mods.
@@Lethalgarage Ok thanks ...ive done the same. The drag pack will be the only change on the car so i should get a good idea. Thanks for the response.,
Can this skinny tires fit a 6 pistons brakes?
Thanks for the LT1 info were can I get them.
I'm still waiting for a road course track day
This will happen in 2018
Can't wait. Hopefully you'll let us know so we can join you. Want to see how a procharger performs out on the track
How is driving on the skinny tires daily
I don’t daily drive this car
Either do I daily drive mine but I just put a whipple on mine and need weld rear drags with M/T and also want my front to match my rear.
Would I be able to safely drive with skinnys on the street when I do drive on the street... or should I put 18 or 20in in the front for when not on the track..
What type of Lugnuts did you use
I’m running ZL1 Addons Titanium lugs
What's going on guys Sledgehammer70 here...
Throwback
LethalGarage lol yup
Well Said Camaro Brother.
never been to a track to get a time but I want to tho ...I got a 1998 sierra 5.0L sooo idk
Does anyone daily drive their drag wheels with radials ??
A lot of people do.
I do.
I do on my rears. You can feel it
I love it very good my boy
Welds and HRE's!! Damn homie!
What size are the rear wheels
