China's ambassador denies abuse of Uighurs in Xinjiang during Andrew Marr interview

  • China’s ambassador to the UK has denied reports of abuse of the Uighur population in the Xinjiang region, as he was confronted with footage of shackled prisoners being herded on to trains. Appearing on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Liu Xiaoming said: 'I do not know where you get this videotape,' adding, 'sometimes you have a transfer of prisoners, in any country.' Xinjiang is home to China's Uighurs, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group that has been subjected to religious and ethnic persecution by Chinese authorities in recent years.

@Magna Carta Why don't you comment on the topic at hand, which is the human rights abuses by China, rather than getting stuck in this left/right paradigm of your own local country? Don't you think there are bigger issues at stake than whether or not you buy a particular newspaper? I might agree with your politics, for sure, but I think you really are missing the point.

You should know that not even a single country could have all the things they have if they wouldn't work with others. There are many examples like trades of food, technology, etc. If you search a little bit, not even China could make a single smartphone by their own. The host pushed back saying that, "although that may be true, the Uighur population specifically had decreased by 80%" (if my memory serves). The ambassador obfuscated and just reiterated that the general population had grown by > 2x as if to prove there was no genocide taking place. The ambassador could hardly refute the host besides keeping assuming the video clip was bogus

Yes, because there’s nothing to compare so it must be the most beautiful place.

The BBC isn’t giving him all the information on where they found it, when it was taken, etc. The ambassador isn’t a Wikipedia page. He’s not Google. Just showing a video clip without any background knowledge and asking someone to explain it makes literally no sense

Wow you people must really love out of context, random video clips and confusing, if not dubiously intentioned, interviews like these, reminding yourself UK is not the only place in the world where criminals and counteractive national violence exist so that you don't have to think for yourself and reflect on what's really happening around your life.

I am not surprised. Andrew asked a simple question yet the ambassador is clearly more concerned that he has managed to source the video.
