They dont really say it in the show but it's hinted that the man they make the handmaids kill is actually a resistance fighter.
I've never heard that but that would make sense. I've often wondered what the real story was
This is the book that made me rethink my life, politics and ways in the late 90s. It scared the sh*t out of me then and seemed very plausible. Today even more so.
It is happening all over the world. A theocracy that prohibits free speech and surpresses women. Been that way for centuries. I guess a TV show helps with realising that, for some people. In the meantime....people been knowing and fighting for centuries. Before tv
Most of the things will be explained, but a few pointers, the US (or a large part of it at least) is now called Gilead. Gilead is basically a religious dictatorship, where women aren't allowed to do anything, and everything is basically forbidden, women being educated is forbidden, people being gay or any other letter of the lgbtq+ is forbidden, getting a divorce is forbidden, etc etc.
There is a big fertility problem. Gilead believes that the problem lies with infertile women, and of course it couldn't possibly be the men, so men who are high up in Gilead get assigned a handmaid, essentially a sex slave/walking womb. If the handmaid doesn't conceive in a certain period she gets reassigned to a new household, and the commander gets a new handmaid. However, the handmaid gets only three assignments to get pregnant, otherwise she gets shipped off to the colonies to clean up the toxic waste that they believe is responsible for the infertility problems.
The first season is based entirely on the book, and basically ends the same. The rest of the show is based on ideas from the book. Margaret Atwood based the events in the book on things that have happened or are happening in our world. None of it is completely made up.
In the book it is made clear that this is all happening in the US, but not the rest of the world. It is also loudly implied that Gilead is aware that handmaids being r@ped every month isn't actually the best way to get more children into the world, but they do it mostly because they want to. To show power, to have a form of slavery, to keep people afraid. If fertile women are afraid of becoming a handmaid, it's much easier to control them.
