    Room is based on the novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue, which is inspired by the real Fritzl case in Amstetten, Austria. The real incident is a lot more horrifying, and the abuse is done by a family member for over 24 years, with the victim bearing seven children during her captivity.

      @Lacy Tastingx her father trapped her down underneath the house for 20+ years. He got away with it by making her write a note saying she ran away to join a cult. He was very obsessed with her since she was little and the whole reason he trapped her down there was bc she wanted to move out. He only got caught bc one of the seven kids got really sick and she begged him to take her to a hospital. It's a long and horrific story with so much to go into. • @chelseat177
    @chelseat177 3 ปีที่แล้ว +183

    What’s terrifying is that it’s inspired by the real-life case of Elisabeth Fritzl. Her story is so horrifying and so is the thought that many women all over the world live this way. It also reminds me of the Ariel Castro kidnappings, he kidnapped and held 3 women captive for YEARS, he also r@ped them and had a child with one of them. He was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison, but killed himself a month later.

    • @MARYWTHER
      @MARYWTHER 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      And yknow for the Ariel Castro one, how his first victim was like his martyr. He kicked her so she'd lose her babies, he gave her a puppy just to kill it several months or years afterwards just to break her spirit. How once, she lost her child pretty late in the pregnancy and he showed her her dead baby and guilt-tripped her for the death of the baby. He would allow her to watch tv so that she'd see that nobody was looking for her (because her mom is a bitch and thought her daughter had run away and didn't do ANYTHING, contrary to the two other girls' families). All of these three women had such different relationships with the man, it's such an "interesting" case on a psychological point of view but it's just so sad and it's so crazy that human beings can be so vile and cruel and feel no remorse doing things like these to others. (and to think NEIGHBORS saw the girls and did nothing. And the ones who did, like report screaming coming from the house, were never listened by the police... it's just such a waste, this whole story). Michelle Knight was held captive in this house for 18 years, imagine the damage. And yet, barely anyone speaks her name now. Truth is, in the perspective of the movie as I interpreted it and as I feel Joy interpreted it, Jack was starting to be in real danger. I feel like Big Nick would have gotten rid of the child at some point because he was too noisy and started "affecting" his """""comfort""""" with Joy who was much more submissive already. So the part with the journalist is actually one of the most interesting ones: because without Jack, she would have never dared doing the moves that saved her life. She did it because she felt her son was in danger, and for no other reason. Just like, tbh in the Ariel Castro's case, Amanda Berry's daughter is literally the main reason these girls are free today.
      Room is incredible because it delved into trauma and Joy and Jack's personal experiences. It doesn't show Big Nick being arrested, it doesn't show the trial, because that's not "what matters" in the story. That's the sensational part and that's not what the story wants to talk about. It takes its time, building all the characters' emotions, from their fear when they prepare their escape, to their adrenaline-rush like joy at the moment, then the afterwards. The anger, the sadness, the "I should feel this but I don't" part of the journey. I've never really seen or read about kids being born in these conditions, testifying about how they've grown up once they were freed from these environments, I hope one day one of these real life children will get to express themselves, maybe it could help, but the way the movies does it is just really touching. I also really love how the movie portrayed the parents. Happy, but not flawless. These seven years, they've suffered through it too, and the dad not being able to talk to Jack or "love" him at first is such a flawed but real thing: how do you deal, it's your grandson yes, but it's the son of the man who r*ped your daughter. The grandma was so nice and compassionate, but also Joy's resentment towards her parents is so legit. I mean, everything felt so raw and real in all of this. I've watched this movie once because it's "too much" to handle, but it's a movie that sticks with you. And the whole thing is a matter that is not explored enough: take the case of Colleen Stan, how there are people out there who actually believe she was WILLINGLY staying with her kidnapper/abuser...

    • @ragtimeraver
      @ragtimeraver 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MARYWTHER Forgive the late reply, but the same way Joy probably felt Jack was in danger now that he was getting older and inevitably more of a threat, she also intuitively knew it wasn't safe to trust Old Nick to bring him to a hospital like the interviewer suggested. Jack is living evidence of Old Nick's crimes and it would've been easy for him to simply eliminate the risk of someone potentially discovering who Jack's parents were.

      Watch any interview with her and any cast member. More than once she was hit with eye rolls, "don't touch me's," and awkward laughter. She was a big fan of running her male coworkers (superior actors to the rest of us) into the ground. She was VERY outspoken about Marvel fans being incels, and got mocked mercilessly by the cast and crew ON CAMERA for claiming she was the only Marvel actor that did her own stunts.....a LIE.
      Let's not forget that when she won an Oscar from some feminist movie she didn't thank anyone........just got up and bad mouthed male movie critics and male audience members.
      They had to use her as little as possible. The cast insisted and the fans made clear she was not welcome in that phase. NOBODY wanted Brie Larson to RUIN 5je largest film series endeavor in history. She showed up 3 movies before the end of Thanos' plot line and damn near ruined EVERYTHING. I'm just glad Marvel made a decent decision and made the Captain Marvel movie skipable while still understanding the plot at large and only gave her 2 big scenes elsewhere and that's it.

    BTW- that interview is a prime example that at the end of the day, the blame is always placed on the woman and the mother. The bar for women is crazy high compared to how it ever will be for men. This movie was based off a book that mirrored a real case where a woman by the name of Elizabeth Fritzl who was kept in a dungeon inside her childhood home by her father at the the age of 18. She gave birth unmedicated to 7 children, one who did die shortly after birth. She was finally free with her children in her 40’s.

    I remember I watched Room as a surprise pre-release in my local cinema. I was just sitting there pressing my thumbs that they somehow make it out of there.
    I live in Germany and a few years earlier, in 2006, we had a real case like this where Natascha Kampusch was trapped for many years like that somewhere in Austria. Her story is shown in the movie 3069 Days, if someone is interested.
    That is the real tragedy behind movies like this. You can pretty much say for sure that all the sick stuff shown in movies has happened or is happening somewhere around the world to someone.

    Omg don't worry about crying dude let's be honest we all cried during that movie. I remembered watching it when I was in my early teenage years (like 13/15 maybe). And as much as I cried I forgot about it, I think just in order to function I had to forget about it. I'm now 19 and I'm a lot into true crimes and I know multiples cases of kidnapping when the kidnapper keep their victims for years. I also saw one of the worst cases when the victim was captive for 20 something year and beared the children (7 I think) of her captivator who was her father. It's during that case that I heard of that movie again and it all came back to me and I had to watch it again. I'm a really teary guy and one of my bro is 5 right now so I watched that movie and just couldn't stop crying from the beginning to the end and even after. Also a lot of journalists were insulted during my watch sorry for the journalists that do their jobs respectfully but really? Those questions? The harassment? If you don't respect the victims you shouldn't even try to have an interview!

      Exactly. The character of Carol Danvers in the movie was that she didn't know she was human or who she was and was being trained to be emotionless. So of course she wasn't emoting much. People who complain about her being a poor actress because she wasn't showing emotions there don't realize her character was supposed to be suppressing emotions.

    A great review.
    Emma Donoghue has always made it clear that "Room" (either the book or her screenplay) is not based on any particular 'real life' examples.
    Rather, she was trying to capture the experience from Jack's point of view. This is probably clearer in the novel rather than in the movie.
    I'm Canadian and the daughter of a CanLit teacher, so when Emma Donoghue's novel "Room" came out in 2010, I should have been one of those people who read it right away. But no, just as you reflect in your review, this is not a topic that anyone wants to think about, let alone read about.
    But I did eventually read Emma Donoghue's novel, which is incredibly moving and thought-provoking. So when I heard that a film of "Room" was being released, I felt much the way as I initially did about the novel... reluctant.
    But this film is amazing. As you noted, there is not a lot of "action" (in the physical sense) but emotionally, the action is non-stop.
    Here is a 2020 interview from TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) with Emma Donoghue (writer of both the novel and screenplay), Lenny Abrahamson (director), Brie Larson ("Ma") and Jacob Tremblay ("Jack") to commemorate "Room" winning TIFF's People's Choice Award in 2015.
    (Jacob Tremblay would have been about 14 in this interview since he was 8 when "Room" was filmed in 2014.)
