    • @byHexted

      @@CulturalistTheory and I DID listen to it all the time, when I first discovered that album I was playing it front to back constantly. You can’t just hold all these albums to the standard of Cuban linx or whatever and go “there’s not even any wu tang appearances” that shouldn’t inherently matter lmao like I get why we all want that, but n***a please is hardly the type of album to have cypher verses. Half of it is singing, and y’all give Kanye so much credit for doing that “first” and you aren’t giving ODB ANYTHING for literally doing something NOBODY had the guts to do at the time, but now everyone does it. That’s just why it’s cool in concept, the absolutely insane off the wall lyrics and performances aren’t just what make the album so special, that’s like WHAT ODB IS ABOUT. That album is him at his most unfiltered and the fact it’s NOTHING like any other Wu tang release is super respectable to me and it keeps it fresh. I can accept maybe most people don’t like it and it will forever be a personal favorite that I find underrated, but I highly suggest going back and giving it another chance with a more open mind. Remove the stigma of “where are all the other guys? Where’s the hardcore RZA production and samples?” And just listen to it as it’s own experience and I think you might like it more, maybe you won’t idk I just love that album sooo much it makes me sad other people don’t get the same feeling. I think it’s probably bc that feeling is totally different from practically every other Wu tang release, the only one that reminds me of it is Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry by Ghostface which is another album I think is super underrated. It has more singing and the production is much less grimy and boom bap. The thing with ODB is it’s easy to go “this is bad he isn’t singing well” but nobody says that about Kanye who can’t hold a note for his life, ODB being on pitch would probably be worse bc him being so all over the place is what made him who he was. Personally the cover they do on that album of “good morning heartache” with lil mo is one of my favorite covers ever, but I’m sure lots of people think that song is literally unlistenable. I’m not even saying you have to LOVE n****a please, but I think it was the THIRD from the bottom if I’m not mistaken and I reallllly strongly feel like a lot of the albums coming up are gonna be worse then this one.

      Also since you asked my favorite Wu affiliate stuff is probably Killarmy, Shyheim, I kinda doubt Gravediggaz count as “Wu affiliates” but if they do obviously 6 Feet Deep would be first

      HU Essence Class of '87. The last time I saw WU (my favorite group) of all-time was here in Brooklyn, NY on Coney Island in 2009. It was the Wu's first return to NYC as a full group. I had seem them before in mini-groups and solos. I was so amped to see them together and they laid a major egg. Granted, the sound system was horrible, but you could tell that playing back-to-backs at their age was too much to ask. Meth and U-God were the only ones with any energy. (Lil' Dirty Bastard also, if you want to count him). GZA looked like he needed a rocking chair. RZA was disinterested. Ghost brought some energy, but he looked dirty as hell and was easily winded. Deck's voice was hoarse and he wore another one of those cheap looking plaid shirts that he tends to favor. Masta Killa barely got any versus. Cap looked drunk, but managed to bark his versus as usual. Rae was just fat as hell to the point that it was a distraction. (Seriously, his waist is wider than he is tall). The show was a mess.

      I will say this...Master Killah and U-God did a 30-35 minute sound check before the show, whereby they just freestyled. U God sounds completely different when he's just kicking basic rhymes. GZA was supposed to have to have two verses in his song Shadowboxin' from the Liquid Swords album. Method Man said “It’s crazy because I had put those two verses on there. GZA was supposed to put two verses on there too, but he only put one. I don’t know what happened. That’s RZA. Being in the studio, in the dungeon by himself, he’ll think the shit out like, ‘Fuck it. I agree bc 1999-2005/2006 was def the LAMEST era of hip hop… Minimalist simplistic beats with a single violin or piano riff/note (thanks to Dre’s second album setting the tone for the next 5 or so years).
      And very few worthwhile, thoughtful lyrics amongst any of the popular mainstream artists… Really took the “money, btiches, & weed” summary of albums to new heights… Nelly, Lil Jon, Fat Joe, 50 Cent, etc… And the artists that had been putting out top tier albums and thought provoking lyrics started struggling as they lowered their standards to cater to the lowest common denominator of thought with “party/club” tracks like their younger peers (Busta and Cube, I’m looking in your direction)…
      But thru that over half a decade drought in quality hip hop, Wu-Tang and the Beastie Boys were two of the very small group that managed to retain their sound and integrity while continuing to grow and not get stale.

    I think the list gets better starting from method mans solo album up. I think by far the most disappointing thing about Wu is how so many members solo projects were neglected and left in the dark. - I mean, Deck ? U-God? Masta? Even Rae’s future productions, oh man. RZA could have made the rest of the members solo projects larger than Rae’s and ghosts, but once that 5 year contract was up he kicked dust. (If you watched American Saga, you’ll see how Deck was hounding him to get his solo started SMH).
    The next biggest failure for Wu is how RZA forced his personal agenda as a producer over classic wu sound branding. - I’ll admit, Wu-tang forever made some classics, but it wasn’t the same Wu-tang as their first album, and the production on prior solo albums… RZA really tried to fix something that wasn’t broken because he got talked down by some old dude in a music store, hence why Wu-tang forever has instruments, and sounds less gritty and more early 2000’s club rap. Rae said it first. And again, once that 5 year contract was up, everything after that went downhill.
    All I have to hope now is that the wu members get the Alchemist to make beats for them, he’s one of the few producers these days to really understand 90’s beats. A rapper is nothing without the right beats, or production that compliments them. - this video proves that.

    • @anthonyanderson9303
      @anthonyanderson9303 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yea RZA's own creative mind got in the way of what made Wu great to begin with. He wanted to be bigger than just a typical 90's New York producer. He wanted to be the black Quentin Tarantino (which if you look where his career went in Hollywood makes even more sense). It made sense that Rae and Ghost would push back the most cuz it was their styles that were directly effected by this. Meth had a more commercial appeal and thus he'd be more accepting of where RZA was trying to go. It is a shame Deck's original album got ruined in the flood cuz the level he was at in '95 lyrically, that album that the potential to be right up there with OB4CL and LS. It's just crazy cuz as much as the rest of the clan didn't get along with RZA, the Wu truly wasn't the Wu anymore once RZA stopped being "RZA". Having said that, guys like Ghost and Meth still had successful careers in that post 5-year plan era, but that also speaks to how great they were as emcees that they could rise above relying solely on RZA to prop them up. They were the true stars of the group in retrospect.

    • @yugopriest1406
      @yugopriest1406 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole point of RZA forming the Wu-Elements production team for Wu Tang Productions was to keep up with everyone's projects and provide the traditional (Forever/OBFCL/LS) Wu-Tang Sound. This information isn't in the show or any documentary movies. This comes from RZA and also Dj Allah Mathematics.

      Plus at that point the Wu weren't the hottest thing out anymore, not even in New York. By that time you had Jay, Pun, DMX, Busta, Nas, etc... all were bigger than Wu in popularity by then.

    Perfect ranking pretty much. Cuban Linx is so beautiful, it’s like a hip hop classical . RZA’s finest moment musically, and Rae and Ghosts formula went on to change NY rap the following the year: Nas with his sophomore, Hov’s debut, Biggies sophomore, and Mobb Deep’s 3rd album all borrowed from Cuban Linx.
